  • NEW 2020 EDITION Pilot dies in flight. **DISCLAIMER** The Hero passenger who lands the King Air Turbo Prop and saves his family had earned a Private Pilot's License 18 years prior to this incident. He quit flying shortly after with only 80 hours total time logged. On this "Commercial Charter" flight Doug White is flying home after attending his brother's funeral with his wife and daughters on board. The Charter Pilot dies suddenly within minutes after takeoff. Doug is forced to take control of the complex high performance turboprop aircraft with zero experience in a King Air and with zero notice. Dead pilot slumped over the controls and distraught family in the passenger cabin. If you are in anyway offended by these circumstances please do not watch this video. **END OF DISCLAIMER** . Previously released in 2015, this new edition includes new content, behind scenes information, interviews with air traffic controllers, super-titles of ATC communications, and more.
    On Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2009, Doug White and his family chartered a Beech King Air B200 N559DW for a flight from Marco Island, Florida bound for Louisiana with 5 souls on board. Soon after takeoff, the pilot, 67 year old retired Air Force Colonel Joe Cabuk loses consciousness. creating an emergency situation that required extraordinary measures by the planes passengers and Air Traffic Controllers. This video is a recreation of that flight and is intended to honor and pay tribute to the pilots and air traffic controllers.
    I have used actual published radar tracks and numerous published interviews and news reports to determine as close as possible the flight path, altitudes, headings, and other pertinent details of this flight. Due to a relatively erratic flight path following the emergency, some airspeeds, altitudes, and headings, may vary slightly from the actual flight. The actual ATC recording of the communications with the King Air are included in their entirety.
    RUclips Audio Library Music: "Under Cover" by Wayne Jones. "Progressive Moments" by Ugonna Onyekwe.
    The King Air used for this flight is by Carenado. The Fort Myers Scenery is by LatinVFR. Please refer to the "About" tab on our home channel page for more information on hardware and software specs.

      As long as you stay calm, anyone with the help of ATC and a pilot on the ground can help you land even a commercial passenger plane. Autopilot can even land and full brake for you once they walk you through how to get it set up. Watched a video just yesterday on how to do that. The hardest part though would be gaining access to the cockpit should the pilots become incapacitated unless it’s accessible just as it was in his case. Pretty interesting and makes me feel as if I chose the wrong career in life and it’s too late to change that.

      He had a very deep sense of the gravity of the situation, but also knew that there was nothing to be gained from not doing his best to triumph over it. He did his best, and God helping, it was enough. I know I would have responded the same way he did, and I hope with the same outcome (though I'm not certain of it.) I have a solid basic understanding of flight controls and airplane physics, though I've never flown a real plane. Experience is the best teacher; he had little, and I have none, but the truth is that if you have God on your side, some good people helping you, and the determination to triumph, it's amazing what you can do.

      Like ATC Lisa said a plane is a plane and Doug just flew by the limited basics he had. Without the help of the instructor, Lisa and all ATC involved, and all the many other factors - deceased pilot could have been heavily slumped over yoke, winds or clouds not favourable, could have happened a long way from an airport or just before landing, etc.

His focus and ability to collect himself as well as the excellent guidance and support that he received from the ground also played a huge role.

Cross country today with GPS and ground tracking is easy. Flying a constant speed prop is a little tricky. You can change the angle of the prop for more/less bite out of the air better efficiency at higher altitudes. He did awsome. My first solo. I greased the landing so smooth Couldn’t believe it. Same when I had a EMERGENCY LANDING bird strike and cracked windshield. Made a short approach and that landing was spot on.

Oh this just made me never ever want to get back on my dad‘s company private 12 person plane. I get terrified before landing and take off in these smaller jets!! We had a crash landing two years ago at our smallllll little airport in Tupelo MS they landed in a big field it was either land it or die it was a husband and wife and their daughter and his son-in-law on that jet I had been on MANY TIMES it was baseball season and this family was leaving for Omaha Nebraska for the championship! I got chills all throughout this video. It felt like I was in the plane the whole time. Incredible editing!! I was an avionics installer for several years at Raytheon Aircraft Services at FLL working mostly on Beechcraft and Kingairs so I’m pretty familiar with the instrument panel layout here, but I don’t have actual yoke time. I really don’t know how I would’ve done in this same situation, but knowing how to work the radios and communicate with the tower is truly THE lifeline. The tower did an amazing job getting all surrounding aircraft out of this guy’s way. It’s their job and they did it flawlessly. This is one of the best aviation videos I’ve ever watched.

You could panic, and doom everybody on the plane, or you could keep your shit together, even though your arse is clenched so tight you cant get off the seat, and hopefully survive. What most people do, is do their best. Falling to pieces when faced with a situation like that is not a survival trait. Heroes are most often normal guys that keep their shit together in abnormal situations.

    As a former Crash and Fire Rescue Air Field Firefighter, this just blessed my heart. I have seen so many plane crashes and I have often been part of the grizzly clean up. The worst being a King Air that lost altitude at the end of the runway, plowed into the trees and crashed and burned. It feels so good to see that this mans experience and ability to set aside his fears and focus like a laser beam not only saved himself but the lives of the two passengers. If you're going to be a pilot, you cannot ever give up. Even if everything is in utter chaos you fly the plane and I believe the pilot said it best. He asked God for help. Nothing wrong with that. What an amazing video. Thanks for posting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Condolences to the family of the pilot who passed away. I bet when the Colonel passed away that pilot met him at heavens gate.

      Half way there, after the King Air landed at Ft. Myers, NTSB turned them around.

      you notice the ATC quickly diverts other planes away from this plane and away from the ft myers airport; then likely tells them all to shut up so all the communicae air time goes to the single plane in desperate need so no instructions get muddled...

      The first controller is a major unsung hero of this story. A lot of people recognize Lisa Grimm Learjet Pilot and Flight Instructor for her amazing role and rightly so. ATC Henkel cleared the congested frequency/airspace with expert precision to enable Lisa to focus only on assisting the King Air. Henkel took care of business without jeopardizing the safety of hundreds maybe thousands of passengers and crews hurdling through his airspace. Legendary.

    I was an Air Traffic Controller for 32 years 2 in tower control 27 as a high level center controller and 3 as low level controller and the end of my career . In those 3 years as a low level ( much easier I thought ) I saw many things This vid brought me right back to work I retired 19 yrs ago . I remember saving two AC with experienced pilots from themselves in highly intense situations , these were experienced pilots and they panicked . This guy didn't panic at first he sounded scared which he was but he was just trying to impart the urgency of the situation . I was so very impressed with both the actions of ATC and the Pilot . Teamwork

    • @kirakaffee9976
      @kirakaffee9976 3 года назад +13

      ... and he needed to express the urgency, as the very first controller didn't get it at first i think.
      + being a bit scared when you're sitting next to your dead pilot, in an aircraft your not familiar with, which is set on a rapidly climbing path you don't know how to correct, and the controller just don't gets your question, is perfectly fine 😏
      he stayed rational and even got quite comfortable with the plane really quickly. badass award!

      @FSMaNiA  3 года назад +22

      @@kirakaffee9976 Initial communications were sketchy at best and several transmissions were inadvertently stepped on by other pilots. The first controller thought he was talking to a co-pilot who could follow an ATC instruction to level off at one one eleven thousand. When it became apparent Doug did not know how to stop the climb the first controller immediately summoned a Learjet Pilot while simultaneously clearing the frequency of all other aircraft. His quick thinking and action was instrumental in the successful outcome of the emergency.
