"Martial Arts themed day care". Damn that resonated so much. When I was teaching kids classes you absolutely do make more money but I ended up being a baby sitter for a lot of them while their parents went shopping. Also when you have 20 kids in a room controlling them all is very difficult! Teaching adults is much more fun I agree, but the kids get a lot of other benefits around their behaviour and ability to focus. This video is awesome though thanks Ramsey, you nailed it.

Going off of your comment on Tae Kwon Do schools becoming a daycare, you are completely right. When I was like 11 I wanted to get into BJJ but my parents wanted me to try to do Tae Kwon Do first to prove I was committed. There were kids showing up to class once a month and barely trying that still got belts while I got scolded because I'd spar a black belt while I was considered about 4 belts lower and apparently went too hard on them. Apparently actually giving them a challenge or taking the sport seriously was frowned upon. I got fed up and left when I was about to get my black belt because I realized the belt system was pointless and that school was a waste. Unfortunately, my parents saw it as me not being committed so I never got those BJJ classes.
Omg, turning 40 this year so this speaks to me, and while I extensively warm-up religiously, any critiques and advice on doing it right would -- at the very least -- be perfect to listen to while doing it. More likely I'd learn quite a bit, even if it's just how *enthusiastic* Jordan is about 'stabbing', lol.

They're little angels, and the teaching experience makes me feel optimistic about having my own children someday. Your mother is an amazing woman. Bless her soul.
With regard to ‘teach kids classes’ and have the patience of a saint. You made me remember my first Karate Sensi, Sensi Roger. This guy was a legend to us with beautiful trad shotokan form and crazy black hair that stuck straight up at the fringe. We used to joke he styled his hair by sticking his head out of the car window on the way to train! He taught us good body mechanics like punching with hip movement and I remember when he took my first grading he reassured me and my friend that the grading was 50% warrior spirit, and he knew we knew the moves. So all we had to do was to display the correct spirit and we’d pass. A few belts later the grading was taken at a joint meet up of more clubs and we had this huge sports hall filled with Karateka. My Dad took me, and he was in the military at the time, and I remember him saying he was impressed with the dicapline we all collectively as a group displayed! ..which I didn’t think much of at the time. That’s just how you behave in the dojo right? Then when I was bigger, more of a teen than a kid, I remember us all splitting off into pairs, and I was a purple belt, got to tap spar with Sensi Roger and the feeling of honour and pride I felt to be able to round house at him in the head and block a few of his 3/4ish speed punches was immense. Obviously when he chose me I thought he was going to destroy me. Even though his spirit was always positive with us and never bullying. Salt of the earth. I still favour straight punches to this day..
I've decided I want to teach, to learn how to do it properly and invest the time to master the techniques I want to share beforehand. I want to specifically help other disabled members of my community, as well as anybody else whose felt like they've had a hard time fitting in with a normal dojo setting. I never expected to 'get rich' or even honestly have a true shot at making a great living off of it exclusively. But it's still just.. something I have to do. So I'm glad I've found this video (among many others you've made) and am learning more and more. I lost touch w/ my martial arts so many years ago, and spent the last year immersing myself back in the world. Relearning exercises, conditioning, technique and finding sparring partners to continue learning and instilling the knowledge as instinct. It's been an interesting ride. Thank you for your contributions to that dream and helping me feel ever increasingly confident this is what I *have* to do.
Believe it or not, even putting Martial Arts on my resume's have helped me score a couple jobs here and there. Also it compliments my voice acting work.
I have comments on only a few of your videos and pretty much disagreeing with most of what you say and the delivery of what your sayin. This video deserves a huge thumbs up. It was insightful and I agreed with all of it. Thanks!
I'm going to be honest on what I am saying ! I used to do kempo Karate and my old sensei was very wealthy ! After 3 years of training and I spent thousands of dollars Paying monthly fees and paying other fees. I realised that most of the things that I learned was not practical in a real fight ! I was very disappointed and not just me but alot of the other people that I was training with. So the meaning of my story is starting teaching people Karate it seemed to work for my old sensei. He was quite rich always driving expensive cars !!
I was super lucky to find MMA AND actually get paid by it(not directly though). For context, I have been training martial arts since middle school. The highschool I attended was incredibly political, if the teachers/students didn't like you everything was far more difficult. Students they liked got their assignment due dates pushed back, they could openly break rules regarding drug and alcohol use and skipping class while the rest of us were never cut such a break. I had a friend who was suspended for falling once because the incident was " distracting to the learning environment " but I mostly think it was to try and avoid a civil suit because their 2nd floor safety rails clearly weren't safe enough for my 6'4 friend haha. So when I reached junior year I finally had enough, i had been competing in Jits and kickboxing for some time now and i knew that's what i wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. So when the opportunity came to take a personal training course and get certified in some disciplines. I jumped on it like bees to honey. The process was long and the pay was barely above minimum wage when I first started teaching kids classes but now at the ripe old age of 21, after years of hard work and dedication. I now make roughly $60 dollars for an hour private session(sometimes more sometimes less) and about $20 for group classes. Again, it did not come easy and it did not come quick. But for a highschool drop out who was told all his life he would never make anything of himself, I can hardly complain. I am grateful everyday for the opportunities training has given me and the growth it has forced upon me.
You’re a very intelligent guy. I like your honesty. I made my living teaching for 20 years, good thing my wife also had an income. Teaching kids can burn you out fast and it becomes tougher as more and more schools flood the market. Finally closed the dojo and now I’m in security work.
Even if you didn't teach any valuable martial arts skills in your classes -- which I am sure you do -- if you only taught your kind of honesty and integrity, your classes would be much more valuable than whatever fee you charge. I watch a lot of your videos and I find I like you, the person, more and more. Anyone who has a personal relationship with you has a valuable and precious person in their life.
Ramsey, you forgot Prison Gaurd, Police Officer, security gaurd, and military:( Martial is the latin word for war, though it would be pronounced different, and are those not also the application of war arts?
Not sure why this is in my recommended but I’ll comment anyway. I’ve also heard that private lessons are a good way to make money. I plan to teach out of my garage gym in my free time. It’s not a huge amount of money but it’s time that I can spend doing something I love while also helping people AND I get paid for doing it.
This was a really long paper cup ad. Seriously though good advice, intellectual honesty and some real integrity are what I'd say are some of the biggest failings in modern martial arts, I didn't even realize how bad it was until I saw how much better your channel is about it.
Hello Mr. Dewey. I would like to offer a formal challenge. I practice Kravkido, the most advanced martial masterpiece on the planet (not just a martial art, we take it to the next level). Because of this I know that I could beat you up. But sadly, you do not know I could beat you up, so we have to rectify this problem. Please come to my country. We will fight on the street because that is the only real place people fight. Oncoming traffic is a vital part of my technique. Signed yours truly sfnub
I love teaching. I'm an aspiring professor of engineering, but I also love to teach music and language. I teach for a selfish reason. Not only do I get to pass on my knowledge, but even from the most recently initiated novices. It taught me to listen more and improve my communication. I love MMA as well, and would not be against teaching it once I get better at it.
Ramsey, Can you do a respectful review of the Gracie Combatives curriculum specifically the pros/cons drilling techniques for months vs rolling immediately. Thanks Boss!!!
Johnny trains for several years in two different martial arts before being able to get into an MMA fight. Johnny gets 300 dollars and brain damage. Jack opens an ecommerce store in two hours and dropships martial arts equipment from AliExpress at a 200% markup. After designing a brand, running some ads and making a few social media pages Jack is making five figures monthly after a couple of months. Be like Johnny, because the Jacks of the world don't need more competition.
Btw, the best way to make money with martial arts without scams is to make something interesting that is real, doesnt sell itself as something else and is well marketed... For example... Make a fighting federation with a ruleset that is interesting for martial artists to try... Like... Shoot boxing with gi and mma gloves with a count of 3 for ko... Sell it as "fight of the traditions" and make taekwondo, hapkido, karate, tang soo do, ninjutsu, etc participate...
Well I've sold tickets to fights and I've been the gym janitor in exchange for free classes and I've enjoyed a few small perks... mostly just free gear... in my experience my pay is knowledge, cuz I've paid more than I've made in money and products. But if you struggle with money and show up every day and do what you can, people take note... I got that work off gym fees opportunity, gloves, gis, a mouthguard, etc just by showing dedication and earning respect. So I can't say how to make money, but that's how you can make it affordable.
Everything you're saying here is similar to my experiences as a professional musician. Getting paid for gigs is tough at first, bit eventually it does happen and the money can be okay. But boy is it tough. Teaching was a big part of my income until coronavirus made it almost impossible to do. In the past, I've worked in places where the owners of that particular business made money out of parents by selling something called 'grades''. I think they're exactly like the belts and kids classes you talk about in a lot of your videos. It's entirely possible to pass a grade 8 exam and not be able to improvise or play anything in a real life gig or jam. And some of the lessons I see out there really make me grimace and feel embarrassed just because of how poor quality they are. It is essentially babysitting as you say. I hate doing kids classes, but I love improvising and making music. So I only teach people that want to learn, and I would hate to string people along and make money out of them in a cynical fashion. It's reassuring to see there are people in other fields of work with similar values as myself. At least I know I'm not the only one! Thanks for the inspiration.
Yo man i just wanna say thank you for your videos i have been training bjj and some mma and your videos have kept me in a good state of mind and out of violence just wanna thank you for your content :)
I have a big question... How long usually lasts a knock out compared to a choke out? And what is the difference in "how to deal with it" like... Do you let them wakeup by themself? Or is there a technique to wake them. Up?
@@RamseyDewey interesting, but is there like... An average of how long it takes to wakeup? Ive been told that when you are knocked out, the longer it takes you to wake up, the worse the brain damage you took... Does something like that happen with choke outs too? I imagine knock outs can last longer than choke outs...
So I guess we know what your 100k video will be: Ramsey Dewey reads the Shanghai phone book while Jordan chases him around the room with a rubber knife.
There's one benefit to teaching other than money. I think it's the one way to perfect your martial art which would otherwise be difficult. You spend a lot of time teaching many different people the different grades, that you really get to perfect the martial art. And teaching is different from learning, so I imagine you get a deeper understanding of what you're teaching as you adapt and find new ways to teach it. I'm not trying to be corny, but I don't think you can truly master a martial art without at least teaching it part time. Because honestly, people don't revisit different grades as much as they should. I'm a big fan of occasionally going over the earlier grades, because I believe there's a lot of good that can come out of having a strong foundation for example.
Maybe you have mentioned this in one of your videos, but how did you end up teaching in China? Why there and not in the US? Are you fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese? What is the traditional Chinese martial arts presence like there? I studied I-chuan and Xing yi, always wondered how those traditions are holding up there. Great videos. I appreciate your humility and humor. You are a great teacher.
My goal is to one day teach as many aspects of the totality of self-defense as possible. To also teach people how to teach themselves or go learn the aspects of self-defense that I am unable to do well enough, including the H2H or martial arts aspect of it. Which I would have to emphasize is very low on the skill tree and its confidence boosting, sense development, and fitness benefits are more important than the martial/fighting skills themselves. Also to get personal training and nutritionist training/certifications to teach those as well. Despite some problems in teaching/training people now and in the past, I really enjoy doing it.
Ramsey I would love to hear your thoughts on why there's so many martial artists (boxers, mma fighters, etc) that didnt even start training till they were adults yet some how managed to go pro in a pool full of lifelong martial artists and beat them is it possible that they're bodies and brains are simply more fresh and still capable of being molded? It's fascinating especially when they're actually better than those who've trained longer than them. Love you're channel! oss
Some of them probably been fighting their whole life, fighting professionally wasnt an option or a thought. Others probably never considered it until it became a last resort and they had the drive lifelongers dont have from doing it their whole life. And probably other reasons.
I could see all of those being real factors except for the streetfighting bit that won't help in any way infact you'll prolly have even more sabotaged brains than the people training
@@itzgobi5624 maybe but it depends because they've still had some experience with a real resisting opponent/threat. But on the other hand, they're usually a lot stiffer physically, even the ones that think they box.
Idk I think live resistance is only helpfull to those that are testing what they already know against live resistance that's why in bjj training for instance you drill with no resistance at first than you do it live or striking you're not even allowed to spar most places till you know what you're doing you don't learn anything by meeting live resistance with 0 training besides what a concussion feels like lol
@@itzgobi5624 for striking, there is light contact sparring. You can still practice what you learn. There is also full fight sparring but that's more for seasoned fighters. It can be done but yeah you can't really train for concussions. But that's where learning good defense it's part.
Ramsey, I just came across your you tube channel, you are great. Thank you for your insights. You have a nice charm to your voice, much like Adam West. But you have a nice pratical veiw of the arts, I like that. Keep doing what your doing, thank you again.
Thanks for the video. Not only are you hilarious - in a dry sort of way - I also learn something. I also like your blunt, honest, direct style . It's refreshing. And, yeah, I'm American, I got a chuckle out of your jab about dishonest billionaires - Though, I imagine you intended to make a different point.
I'm sure you're overwhelmed with martial art comparisons but I would love to hear your thoughts on Systema and Silat. Also do you know the differences between Shotokan Karate and Kyokushin Karate?
I did address this in another comment section on your video from the other day but I would like to know your opinion on what I talk about below, either in a video or a reply. I've seen schools in china that promote teachings of Shaolin kung fu, Sanda, and other forms of Chinese martial arts. An example of this would be the Qufu Shaolin Kung Fu School or, the Middle Kingdom Traditional Kung Fu School. They provide accommodations such as a place to sleep, food 3 times a day 7 days a week...etc, this all being at a set price either per month or year of stay. My question is, do you believe these schools to be a more of a touristy "martial arts" type of training, or would these schools be considered legitimate? in your opinion
Mr Ramsey Dewey, Hello, I used to go to train bjj, I was a 3 striped white belt. But I have stopped from a lack of motivation. I have the same problem with going to gym, which I have also stopped. Any tips?
Sure. Me also. Look at yourself in the mirror? Works for myself. And my idea of a workout is not big. But I am quite vain and have a concept of what looks good. It's going to be individual. I am not Ramsay Dewey, but a rather annoying fan of his, sore about his critism of my Countryman and hero. I admire the way he talks to camera, and admit I am a very lonely person.
Other then boxing, kickboxing and wing chun can you suggest any other martial art that doesn't require much leg flexibility? Even in my youth I always struggled with stretching leg and hip flexibility to kick to the head so that's why I ask.
This is coming a year late, but interestingly enough, I actually started teaching karate to kids this year. I'm having to grudgingly admit that I actually was starting to enjoy it.
“I’ve been uploading on RUclips since RUclips began” You mean there are awesome older videos on your channel right now? Wait no... don’t tell me... you had an emo phase? Please tell me you didn’t LoL But great video. I loved the part where you said “martial arts themed daycare “ I laughed but it’s true!
The gym owner where I work part time at asked me to teach Tai Chi which I have practiced for a few years. I went to my teacher and asked what he thought about it and he would not give me his blessing to teach the class. It is an opportunity I would like to pursue but don't want to ruffle any feathers so to speak. Any thoughts?
I train at a Sanda and Wushu club (The shifu teaches us both) im 13 and all the others are all above 18 I have 1 friend who is 14 in the beginning we always play soccer but you're allowed to grapple, any advise on trying to resist someones grapple thats way bigger and stronger than you and how to grapple them
As a former bouncer, martial arts didn't make me money and street encounters didn't make me money. It gave me peace of mind. It also cost more than I got in those terms. But I gained in passion. It's about passion or don't.
Hey Ramsey what martial art should I start in? I'm in the US of A but I don't have a lot of money to try lots of different gyms etc I like grappling and striking equally but what do you think would be a good start?
I'll admit that it was the voice that initially caught my attention. But content took precedence after the first vid. Great videos and information bro. Although because of your voice I would watch just for that with laughable content LMAO
Sometimes people need to hear what they already know. It helps them see details from their own thoughts once they are untethered from the mind. Ramsey, what kind of body conditioning would you recommend for an greenhorn kickboxer?
You missed one. Another way to make money with martial arts is...write a book. I realize that this, along with making DVD's, are kind of a subset of teaching...but it was one aspect that you missed and there is a huge market for instructional manuals and DVD's. And no matter how repetitive the material people will continue to buy them...
You can open your own Taekwondo gym when you hit 2nd Dan blackbelt, and charge the equivalent of 5 dollars a month per student, while also selling equipment and getting percentages from promotion fees. It's expensive to be a TKD blackbelt though, and every year you need to attend a seminar for the new officiating rules. You need gym space too.
I stopped paying fees to the World Taekwondo Federation a long time ago. I took of the costume and learned how to fight instead. I suppose I outgrew them.
@@RamseyDewey oh man, you don't know how expensive it is now. Belt promotions start at 30 dollars from white to yellow, then from yellow to blue, red, brown, high brown, and black, increasing all the way. You pay 200 US dollars worth to get to 1st dan. You can't fight outside novice tournaments unless you are red belt level. You can't fight unless you are wearing an accredited dobok, which costs around 150 dollars, and the dobok is different for combat and poomsae, so that's 300 if you really want both. Costs quite a bit now.
It's not "doing" martial arts, but I guess related journalism (i.e. starting your own channel/site) could be a means to make income. In the early days you'd likely be reliant on RUclips and Google Ads-type ad revenue, but over time (if you get popular enough) you might be able to parlay it into a kind of affiliate deal with fight events.
I am a butcher by trade and karate training ad night. 🙏 OSU 🙏 Love this way of living. My respect for youre video's and Greetings from the Netherlands.
Do you feel that there are some "traditional" fighting styles that are more suited for different martial art sports (boxing, kickboxing, mma, ufc, things like that)
Even still, with “no contest” calls, there are people that decide (talking about the fans) one of the fighters clearly got the win by TKO or decision, but the refs are blind... In which case the graph would hold true to the 50/50 win-lose percentage.
I recently met with a guy.... Who happens to be a kickboxer... And I am a Muaythai fighter.... As we happen to train together..... We come across a lot of variation that I don't agree on especially the spinning kicks... and pad holding technique...... Also the padding session is different on his option.... Like I do how padding should be done...one person holding pads other hitting with all the shots he calls for a time of 5-10 minutes... He on the other hand does single strikes and then changes pads and asks me to do it.... Whose method is better????
Hey Ramsey quick question What do you think about Jeet Kune Do? (Not talking about the wing chun stuff that some guys teach, even tho Bruce Lee himself abandoned most of his wing chun)
The last time I did any training (2 weeks ago, in a Muay Thai gym) I went 1 round of 3 of skipping (which I was doing incorrectly, 3 mins) followed by plyometrics. After half of the 2nd round of skipping, I felt sick and didn't make it to the toilet to puke in time (because I thought it would be rude to walk through the matted area). Luckily, I puked away from the mats onto more cleanable concrete floor. I've never been active in my, admittedly short and alterable, 16 years of life. How could I train my body to not fail at endurance?
There are definantly of plenty of Karate and Tae kwon do Ninja baby sitters.LoL What Ramsey had said is so true I walked into dojos and actually got that vibe.
The people I've seen that make the most money from martial arts are the ones who star in movies such as Chuck Norris, Steven Segull, Jean Claude Vandam, etc. So if your skills are good enough to land a roll in a movie, maybe that is the way to make the most money.
I just realized the reason your videos tend to release in the middle of the night is because you're on the other side of the planet.

Ramsey your truly a gem 💎
Thank you for the response video sir! If I ever visit Shanghai I will for sure visit your gym.
After 3 years of training and I spent thousands of dollars
Paying monthly fees and paying other fees. I realised that most of the things that I learned was not practical in a real fight ! I was very disappointed and not just me but alot of the other people that I was training with. So the meaning of my story is starting teaching people Karate it seemed to work for my old sensei. He was quite rich always driving expensive cars !!
I think your channel is the best! Perhaps the only channel I really look forward to seeing new videos
Thanks Ramsey I will become a martial artist conman as soon as possible, now I have to learn a martial art.
Great video including your awesome humor! Thx!
Signed yours truly
sfnub
Kravkido sounds amazing!
You're a better man than me ramsey I oughta work on my patience with people I disapprove of sorry for the immature comment
That's pretty funny.
On the **street** !
“Oncoming traffic is a vital part of my technique” lmao 😂 😂😂😂
I love teaching. I'm an aspiring professor of engineering, but I also love to teach music and language. I teach for a selfish reason. Not only do I get to pass on my knowledge, but even from the most recently initiated novices. It taught me to listen more and improve my communication.
I love MMA as well, and would not be against teaching it once I get better at it.
Ramsey,
Can you do a respectful review of the Gracie Combatives curriculum specifically the pros/cons drilling techniques for months vs rolling immediately.
Thanks Boss!!!
i wanted to ask this aswell
So I can't say how to make money, but that's how you can make it affordable.
so glad i found your account so early
What I understood from this: Be a good martial artist and a good teacher and money will naturally flow your way through participation & gratitude.
You can't get a black belt at my school until 13 years old at the minimum. It's usually around 15 and the time isn't guaranteed.
Thx Ramsey your lessons are great and sharing knowledge like Jack Dempsey book totally changed my game and now finally I have decent power punches
I have a big question... How long usually lasts a knock out compared to a choke out? And what is the difference in "how to deal with it" like... Do you let them wakeup by themself? Or is there a technique to wake them. Up?
How long is widely variable. And as far as waking them up: you wait.
You can make money doing voice over your voice is awesome brother
Spot on again Ramsey, regards from Manchester England
Howdy, Ramsey.
Do you know anything about knife fighting?
Any good knife fighting channels you can recommend? Other than Master Wong, naturally.
I like how honest and down to earth this channel is,
As to answer the question myself:
Make movies lol...
Mr Ramsey Dewey,
Hello, I used to go to train bjj, I was a 3 striped white belt.
I admire the way he talks to camera, and admit I am a very lonely person.
its all about the truth friend. thank you for staying true to it.
Great insight and so true!!
You have a great voice and would land a job on any radio station I'm sure
That was never my experience while looking for work at radio stations. Is this a job offer?
@@RamseyDewey I don't know if that's a true story but it's their loss my man!
Hey! Did you know that a Batman animated movie stole moves from Kwonkicker's short movie?
Which one?
It's crazy because it's verbatim. Move for move. They didn't even switch anything up.
“I’ve been uploading on RUclips since RUclips began”
You mean there are awesome older videos on your channel right now?
Wait no... don’t tell me... you had an emo phase? Please tell me you didn’t LoL But great video. I loved the part where you said “martial arts themed daycare “ I laughed but it’s true!
Hey Ramsey can you pls do a video on the most effect and simple takedowns for mma/self defense also best positions on the ground for striking 👌
I train at a Sanda and Wushu club (The shifu teaches us both) im 13 and all the others are all above 18 I have 1 friend who is 14 in the beginning we always play soccer but you're allowed to grapple, any advise on trying to resist someones grapple thats way bigger and stronger than you and how to grapple them
Ramsey, What did you think of the Tyson Fury vs Wilder boxing fight?
As a former bouncer, martial arts didn't make me money and street encounters didn't make me money. It gave me peace of mind. It also cost more than I got in those terms. But I gained in passion. It's about passion or don't.
Hey Ramsey what martial art should I start in? I'm in the US of A but I don't have a lot of money to try lots of different gyms etc I like grappling and striking equally but what do you think would be a good start?
I'd buy a "JX Fight Club - Shanghai" t-shirt. When do they go on sale?
*laughs in international taekwondo fedoration*
It's not "doing" martial arts, but I guess related journalism (i.e. starting your own channel/site) could be a means to make income. In the early days you'd likely be reliant on RUclips and Google Ads-type ad revenue, but over time (if you get popular enough) you might be able to parlay it into a kind of affiliate deal with fight events.
What do you think of the "learn to fight," combat fighter, "modern barbarian" $37 thing?
Oh man, I keep seeing ads for that! Anything that promises to turn you into an instant trained killer is garbage.
I am a butcher by trade and karate training ad night. 🙏 OSU 🙏 Love this way of living. My respect for youre video's and Greetings from the Netherlands.
you could sale martial arts equipment. write books or do vlogs . or articles. or make instructional videos.
You Are a true intellectual thank you.

Whose method is better????
stuntman with a martial arts background could be a good route to pursue also.
Hey Ramsey quick question
What do you think about Jeet Kune Do?
I just remembered what your speaking style reminds me of: Captain James Tiberius Kirk of the USS Enterprise.
EZ answer. Martial Arts OF. Will need plenty of wrestling experience.
There are definantly of plenty of Karate and Tae kwon do Ninja baby sitters.LoL What Ramsey had said is so true I walked into dojos and actually got that vibe.
You read the comments section?
This will definitely end in tears.
The people I've seen that make the most money from martial arts are the ones who star in movies such as Chuck Norris, Steven Segull, Jean Claude Vandam, etc. So if your skills are good enough to land a roll in a movie, maybe that is the way to make the most money.
