Adele most likely will never flop because she caters to middle aged and older aged adults as much as she does the teens and younger adults. Her fanbase is multi-generational. She has the zoomers, millennials, Gen Xers, baby boomers, and even those from the silent generation who are still alive. No other pop star during this time has that kind of fanbase. That's why she sells records faster than virtually everyone in the music industry. Unless she pulls a Lauryn Hill and put her career to an abrupt end, she will be at the very top for at least another 10 years.

Adele has the same effect Lorde has. There's something so mystique about them that it doesn't matter how long they spent making new music, we're just there, waiting for them to feed us something lol. I think it's part of their thing by now. Also, I think Adele has a particular sound that could make dropping music constantly a little boring or predictable. Adele's appeal is the same as Barbara Streisand or Whitney Houston or Susan Boyle (yes, Susan Boyle moves units) or Mariah's biggest singles: People love adult contemporary ballads. They will never be trendy, but they will also never be obsolete. The trick is selling adult contempo that also is interesting/relatable to younger demographics and Adele and her team have found a consistent way to do it. I wonder how her new looks are going to affect sales and her perception by the public. Don't get me wrong, I love how she looks and that she looks happy and comfortable in her skin (which is what matters), but I mean that she is no longer the "average looking girl" with a powerhouse voice. Now she really looks like a "world pop star" so I don't know if that will make her lose her relatable vibe. There will be people who will be disappointed and feel she "sold herself and no longer relies on her talent alone", but I'm hoping she stays on top because her artistry deserves it.

In 3 weeks, "folklore" sold 1,000,000 units. I would guess Adele could move a pure sales range of 900,000 - 1,500,000. I expect it to be down from "25", but I really couldn't gauge by how much.

Thank you for this video. People seem to not realize how amazingly 21 shifted the musical landscape. Before 21 the billboard charts was full of auto tuned vocal electro pop bangers with the artists following it with outrageous visuals, fashion style and overall persona primarily thanks to lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kesha, however, that changed with 21 electro pop was still present on the billboard charts but it changed post-2011 with more alternative, indie pop music and less auto tuned/more raw powerful vocals. You can say it foreshadowed the breakthrough success Lana Del Rey, frank ocean and Ed Sheeran experiences in 2012-2013. And then you got 25 that happened when streaming was taking and still took over the music industry but following Taylor swift’s 1989, Nicki minaj’s the pink print and Beyoncé’s 2013 self titled release, 25 was merging physical releases/sales being able to gasp with streaming and digital downloading. I personally love Adele, she’s one of the best vocalists/songwriters in contemporary pop music her music is amazing and changed the scope to the culture.

I think a lot of that is very unjust, though. Christina didn't deserve that one bit.

Ha. We said that about Mariah until 2000.
Adele doesnt take risks. Taking risks is what makes an artist. She is just a singer.

I understand that perspective. Of course, only time will tell. However, given her track record and approach to music, even without extreme change in her music, she still has success. I would argue her "risks" are these long hiatuses she takes. Those don't always guarantee a huge comeback, but for her, they do.

Mariah is amazing. She has a more interesting catalogue of songs then Adele because she drops always something different. Her first albums where pop than she starts taking risks an got more R&B and I don't talk about her Remixes and features with HipHop artists. Mariah did more for Music than Adele will ever be.

2010s artists like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande have their singles sale more than their album sales
Adele however, her albums have more sales than her singles
we don't recognize her by releasing song like rolling in the deep..we recognize her by releasing album like 21 and that's what i really like about Adele..we don't focus big on her song...we focus on her albums

She is a "classic", classy woman. Her music isn't "trendy" but soulful, tasteful, passionate and raw. It will likely last the test of time and always feel relevant. She has a big, bold alto voice and she let's you know she's not afraid to be heard, that she's an unapologetically independent woman who can stand on her own; her artistry speaks for itself. Unlike many of her contemporaries she doesn't bare her flesh; she bares her soul, musically. What more can l say?
I don't think she should necessarily change her sound. However with her divorce maybe she feels the need to branch out. It she follows the trends or go into a new direction completely l hope she releases them as singles and ep's but her proper album would deliver to her fans what they like about her signature: big ballads and torch songs. As a fellow low voiced girl l know that she knows what suits her best. There's no need to strain and sing ridiculously high, otherwise she should sound overly thin and bright. She needs music that shows off her rich voice. (I have heard, however she quit smoking, who knows, maybe she gained on the upper range, and start singing more like a standard Mezzo)
Toni Braxton also knows this well, as her dark, heavy, mournful contralto is even more effective in the heartbreak and loss genre. Her haunting and sensual voice is deeply affecting and conversational.

I'd have to give it more thought honestly. I never really think of one-off tracks when thinking of an artists career as a whole, but this definitely will have me revisiting some artists and their discography to see how one-off tracks fit into the entirety of their career!

@@popdissected4400 Thanks for your reply! I also think stand-alone tracks don't usually have much of an impact but because Adele had such big gaps between albums and Skyfall won a Golden Globe and Oscar I thought it was a big moment for her. To this day I watch her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes when it comes to mind, so funny and down-to-earth!

Her new album, 30, flopped as expected, sadly... Not even in top 5 biggest female launches on Spotify. She did just 60 million on 1st day, when Taylor did more than 90 million with just a re-release. Flop era for Adele. I don't think she can recover from this with another boredom collection of piano songs...
