    The Equality Commission rejected a name change on the ground that lots of places have different names. This was blatantly dishonest as the places cited have different names in different languages. The problem here is that the city has 2 names in the same language.

    • @asanulsterman1025

      No, the city only has one name but some people choose not to use it.

      Leaving aside the politics, I think places should be called by what most of the locals want it to be called.

    • @asanulsterman1025
      @asanulsterman1025 2 года назад

      @@emmetoconnor5105 You know that's not the way it works or many cities would be called "shithole", "arse end of nowhere" and the like. Leaving aside the politics, no need to change a city's name because locals have a 'pet' name else Carrickfergus would be renamed Carrick long time ago.

    • @emmetoconnor5105
      @emmetoconnor5105 2 года назад

      A facetious response. Or faecetious? That's how it works in democracies. If the burghers of Carrickfergus want to change the name to Carrick or Londoncarrick they should and would be free to do it. An obvious compromise for Derry would be to change the name and leave the walled city as Londonderry, which would be somewhat analagous to the City of London and greater London.

    • @asanulsterman1025
      @asanulsterman1025 2 года назад

      @@emmetoconnor5105 No, that is not how it works and you know that fine well. By far the simplest solution is to leave the name as is and people just understand that they have always been free to shorten Londonderry to Derry or not without upsetting anyone. But trying to change the name does upset many.

    You should go to South-Tyrol in Italy where every town has two names. There are a lot of parallels between Northern Ireland's and South-Tyrol's histories, with largely different outcomes though.

    The name was changed to Londonderry when the old town of Derry was developed into a city by a group of London merchants around 1610. In the not so distant past Derry or Londonderry was used interchangeably by all, Derry was simply a convenient shortening of Londonderry in much the same way as Carrickfergus is often shortened to Carrick. But now nationalists have politized the name and you are deemed a 'planter' if you say Londonderry and a 'fenian' if you say Derry. They have even started referring to county Londonderry, which has never had any other name, as county Derry pointlessly creating something more to disagree about.

    • @BrendyNew

      Think it was politicised when the Brits took it over. Imagine that

      It's so sad how sometimes you go on RUclips videos and you see strange backwards people trying to rewrite history. Anyone doing a Google search to see that it was originally called Doire in Irish which was translated to Derry In English. The (official according to the British government) name change of the city from Doire or Derry to Londonderry happened at the same time in 1613. People called it Derry because that's what it had been called. It was not a shortening in any way and you know that, and it's so sad that you would go to the bother of trying to give an inaccurate depiction of history just to make yourself feel better. The majority of people just call it Derry, because most people don't randomly bend over for English people.
