And if you know, you know. It was under Carter (but actually started under Ford, Carter was blamed for it). Bob Jones and many other Christian schools and private schools that popped up in the wake of civil rights were being threatened with IRS and their tax exemption status. To them it meant existential war and utter betrayal by Carter - even though technically had nothing to do with Carter and everything to do with their own racism and bigotry. They was 1977 if I recall correctly. They voted for him then, and then 1980 the southern strategy was effectively in full swing and traditionally democrat conservatives shifted over to Republican. 1980 you had refan elected, but also had Buchanan declaring the culture war. 9/11 really was a crusade to them. And the rest is history. They're just going to get worse and worse and there's no going back. And to a large degree, the freaks are running the show. So we're going back to the reformations and wars of religion, because America was except from that history and never learned from it. Weeee

Jesus actually said he came to set people against each other. You can’t serve God and the Devil. You can’t be open to everything because that means good and evil means nothing. The moment you stand for something then by definition you are standing against other things
People on the left seem to be eternally stuck as victim/child energy types in various ways who want to always be accepted exactly as they are. A good example of the Drag Queen thing. They feel the urge to go and teach other peoples children to be tolerant of them. Or for Trans people to accepted as real men or women by everyone else
They can’t tolerate people not wanting them. They force it down everyone’s throat. Showing zero empathy for others deeply held beliefs. Then gas lighting then by saying they have no empathy lol

I was forcefully grabbed by their security force and forced out of the building (I did not resist in any way, but they couldn’t help but put their hands on me. I was complying.), and then was told that they would legally pursue me if I came back. These people can’t even stand to be in the same room as someone with a different political opinion than their own. How are we supposed to get through to people who cant stand a simple t-shirt? Extremely simplified information - necessary for comprehension of current political situation in the USA - which, like it or not, impacts the whole world.
As currently on view in the USA, the FASCIST SCAM started over a hundred years ago when Coors (as in Coors beer) put together a fascist right wing group and agenda to counter the socialist progressive policies that were beginning to be implemented in America.
The protestant groups, such as the evangelicals, baptists, assemblies, etc., were chosen for this project PRECISELY and INTENTIONALLY, because they were NAIVE, incredibly IGNORANT, and very EASILY and READILY MANIPULATED.
Money, capitalism, power, fascism, plutocracy, and oligarchy were and are the singular goals, the absolute objectives; though most of the deluded members of these cults are not aware of these things and would die defending this con.
These ultra right wing barrons knew it would take some time for this cold-blooded, purposeful contrivance to work its way to the forefront, but it started to bear fruit in the 50's, showed up in force in the Reagan 80's, the Gingrich Congress, Dubya's era, Delay's Congress, the Claremont Institute, the Heritage Foundation (and many others like it), Mercer, Cambridge Analytica, etc., and came to full, grim, nightmarish fruition with the REPUBLICANeviks, TRUMPeviks, MAGAviks, Q'ANONeviks, etc.; with the RIGHT WING, conservative, fascist MEDIA at their side AMPLIFYING the SOPHISTRY/MESSAGING 24/7. --- --- ---
Point: FOX media is NOT a NEWS outlet. It deals strictly in dissemination of ULTRA-RIGHT wing fascist, republicanevik, trumpevik, magavik, q'anonevik, fundamentalist, racist, etc., LIES and PROPAGANDA.
      (Think Moscow's PRAVDA.)
      FOX actively promoted
      seditious lies regarding
      the last american
      presidential election,
      was caught and sued,
      settled out of court and
      paid close to a billion
      dollars in settlement
      fees to Dominion.
      Smartmatic is in
      process of suing.
      Little, if anything, has
      changed.
      (Although there is now
      one very capable,
      democracy and truth
      supporting journalist
      who, when she is on,
      very intelligently
      refutes all the lies.)
      FOX wholeheartedly
      (almost singlehandedly)
      but alongside such media
      as OANN, NEWSMAX,...
      and all the ultra-right
      political/religious RADIO PROGRAMMING,
      [which by the way is
      particularly brutal in
      the vile, vicious lies it
      spreads, being fiercely
      anti-education,
      anti-science, very pro
      muscovite-russian state
      fascism, pro-Orban,
      pro-Putin, misogynistic,
      racist, etc.],
      CONTRIBUTED TO the incalculable degree of IGNORANCE and STUPIDITY WITHIN the american populace;
      CONTRIBUTED TO the absolute harsh oligarchical plutocratic fascist CORPORATE CONTROL of the LIVES of american citizens for the absolute WORSE and spiraling downward;
CONTRIBUTED TO the horrendously NEGATIVE STATE of affairs regarding the condition of economic PROSPERITY,
WELLBEING, and physical/medical/mental HEALTH of american citizenry; and
CONTRIBUTED TO the DELIBERATE CRIMINAL FASCIST DISARRAY within the USA government.
      This is NOT an exaggeration.
      --- --- --- --- ---
It is, in fact, a STATISTIC
      that if you watch FOX
(or watch and listen to other such right-wing outlets),
      you are (kindly phrased) SIMPLE-MINDED.
And the more you watch/listen to/read the rightwing media, the more DENSE and BRAINLESS you become. --- --- ---
It would take hundreds of years of deprogramming - and that with limited success - to start to solve this problem, if at all possible, because it was done under the auspices of religion. The naive left fell prey to right wing pr and did absolutely nothing to counteract this nefarious scheme. It was dismissed as under the sponsorship and guidance
      of 'religion.'
They were afraid to touch that system model.
Instead, they actually helped cater to it, particularly during the Reagan and Dubya era.
      - - - - - - -
The so-called 'christian right' is NOT Christian.
They are old testament fundamentalist reconstructionists and dominionists. There are varieties within those; most of which are beyond hypocritical, predatory, fraudulent, grifting, larcenous, and CRIMINAL.
They do NOT follow the teachings of Christ as laid out in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament of the Bible.
The word 'christian' as applied to these people
      is a
      DELIBERATE MISNOMER.
      -- -- -- -- -- --
Additionally, the Muscovite-Russian State has been plying its PROPAGANDA for hundreds of years.
But it came into full play in the USA with the Reagan years in all possible categories, such as:
economy, commerce, business, politics, finance, entertainment, sports, religion, education, etc.
Putin intensified the predatory ruthless scheme to a highly targeted level by not only using HUMAN ASSETS but ALL MEDIA RESOURCES available, particularly television and internet; concentrating on the venal, CORRUPT, uninformed, IGNORANT, and GULLIBLE political/religious right.
This Infiltration/Manipulation is CURRENT and ONGOING.
To wit: Tucker Carlson, Mike Johnson, Jim Jordan, Comer, Tuberville, trumpeviks, magaviks, q'anoneviks, fundamentalists, right wing media,...
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Crudely but accurately stated, Trump and the religious/political right are Putin's 'butt boys' -
(though Trump is particularly 'special' in that regard).
That goes for the ENTIRE POLITICAL and RELIGIOUS RIGHT THROUGHOUT the PLANET.
Think Europe, India, Africa, etc. The MUSCOVITE BRAINWASHING has been PROFUSE.
      -- -- -- -- -- -- --
The right planned hundreds of years into the future.
The left was lazy, and in many instances, arrogant and unsophisticated about reality.
The consequences and results of lack of counter-action are self-evident and on full display. -- The only long-term answer:
EDUCATION, education, education. With real SOLUTIONS and absolute, actual RESULTS.
Not following through would be terminal.
      --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Everything Trump does is CALCULATED, MANIPULATIVE, DELIBERATE, MALEVOLENT, and SADISTIC.

Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. ... There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. Over 25 years ago my Evangelical grandmother told me that the American flag was a sign from god that we, the "star people" were destined to rule over the "sand people". My takeaway was that she thought 'we' (mostly white American Christians) were meant to be superior to, and rule over, Middle Eastern people and to have control over Israel. This was shortly after 9/11, after all. I honestly don't remember if she even explained how she came to that conclusion because it was so nonsensical, but it just goes to show these seeds were sown a long time ago. My grandmother passed before Trump came into power, but if she were still here she would be worshiping him like the 2nd coming of Jesus. My mother (a divorced single mom mind you) who has always been Christian, also voted for him and bragged to me when he won. The kind of world my mom voted for is one in which she would be shamed for leaving my abusive alcoholic father. It's crazy to me how easily Evangelicals fall to their knees for Trump, even when it goes against their own interests.

Then, once we were teenagers, all my white friends’ families (I’m white too) suddenly became very religious, their kids began going to church youth groups, and they were no longer allowed to watch certain movies and listen to certain music.

      (almost singlehandedly)
      but alongside such media
      as OANN, NEWSMAX,...
      and all the ultra-right
      political/religious RADIO PROGRAMMING,
      [which by the way is
      particularly brutal in
      the vile, vicious lies it
      spreads, being fiercely
      anti-education,
      anti-science, very pro
      muscovite-russian state
      fascism, pro-Orban,
      pro-Putin, misogynistic,
      racist, etc.],
      CONTRIBUTED TO the incalculable degree of IGNORANCE and STUPIDITY WITHIN the american populace;
      CONTRIBUTED TO the absolute harsh oligarchical plutocratic fascist CORPORATE CONTROL of the LIVES of american citizens for the absolute WORSE and spiraling downward;

I was raised catholic in Ireland and the church ruled everything, education politics, opinions and there was so much judgement based on what the priest would say. I pushed back, challenged the church and was perceived to be a nuisance and shock of shocks a "feminist". Then I left and I now live happily as an atheist in Canada. When your in it you don't notice how overwhelming and pervasive it is because you're either with them or against them. Ireland has changed a lot but catholics still rule.

My gf is Irish millennial and she talks about how much things have changed in her lifetime. She went to art school in an old repurposed laundry. She said they still had women there working laundry in the early 2000s. Those women had no where else to go and nothing else to do and so the government cut them a deal basically, and ended up working for the school. My gf said she took joy in the school hanging up subversive art (often with religious or counter religious themes) in the old halls of that place.
When I go back and dig into the still living history they is very recent for our times in how horrible the catholic-state regime was, it's shocking. Probably the worst I'd seen was about the mother and baby homes and the effectively orphaned kids being treated as pure byproducts of sin, fully neglected as little souls. Watched a man basically in tears describing how they would leave the kids diapers unchanged for days, and there was 5 times higher child mortality in those places because of the negligent neglect. How they are otherwise so good at covering up things and they cultivate the image of being for humanity and the humane. It's the opposite. And all these Americans that are skeptical of government, they aren't skeptical enough of their religions becoming part of the government, or in the case of Catholics, the religion itself effectively having a government. Always perplexed me they ever questioned things enough. And my dad gets giddy to this day talking about how bad the atheist communists for being militantly against religion, can't see these artifacts of even recent history with the Catholics, "well that was then, and people are sinners." And I'm like, that's exactly my point! Being devoted to the biggest wine tasting club doesn't make you a better person!

Being french-canadian, learning catholics are behind a lot of this breaking down of the separation between church and politics is chilling and kind of illuminating.
Back in the early nineteenth century, the catholic church in Canada was a moribund leftover from the french ancien régime. But through an alliance with anglo-american capital during industrialization it revived and amassed immense power and influence as a public institution, which in exchange could use ideology and superstition to keep a mostly materially and educationally poor majority in check. This is why when the "quiet revolution" hit in the 60s, french canadians aspired not only to overthrow foreign dominance in the economy, for instance by nationalizing hydroelectricity, but at the very same time overthrew the power of the catholic church. Because of this, french canadian culture today is rabidly secularist and allergic to anything religious, especially women for obvious reasons.
So from here it's depressing seeing the US slowly going the opposite direction in the same time frame, but it's certainly not surprising this is happening through an alliance with capitalists who couldn't give two shits about religion but are adept at using it for political control, and christian nationalism in that sense is a perfect fit for american culture.

Canadians must be awfully concerned, too. I am always grateful for the kindness and compassion of my Canadian friends. Following is just a simple outline of the bigger picture we're up against. Disheartening.
Now we have these demographic forces who collude or leverage them to promote and elect a Malignant Narcissistic Psychopath who curries their favor (at least until he has absolute power, in his mind, and as their useful idiot in some of their minds), to gain the highest position in the world, if only because of its wealth, military might, technical advances, and nuclear weapons:
      1) the White (even if they disguise their profound racist bigotry for votes) Christian Nationalists
      2) Oligarchs and their Corporations/Industries and their paid shills
      3) Mainstream Media (MSM) swallowed up by Oligarchs who now own and control the propaganda output of the majority print, radio, television network and cable news
      4) Political Party Elected Officials who are Maga and chameleon republicans
      5) Enemy Foreign Country Leaders intent on our destruction
      6) Foreign Country Leaders whose perks and bribes can influence (and have influenced) those in office for their benefit
      7) all the brainwashed voters who are influenced by beliefs, actions, or the propaganda machine from the above, or the core cult of personality voters whose indoctrination was driven directly by the cult leader hating the same people they hate.
      8) or the wealthier voters who elect those whose policies are more profitable to them regardless of ill effects on others.
      9) The Supreme Corruption: The Corrupted Supreme Court as the ultimate authority and other consequential courts of authority who are facilitating the criminal actions of those who are tapped to usurp our freedoms and progress, as well as their own constitutional defying subversion of the same.
VOTE BLUE, VOTE DEMOCRAT/PROGRESSIVE DOWN BALLOT, AS IF YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF THOSE YOU LOVE DEPENDED ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES.
We are in for a bumpy ride for years to come. The United States of America is on the precipice of FACISM, right now, and the foundation of Fascism, already at work from within our power structures, already disrupting the checks and balances meant to safeguard against it, might be a force to reckon with for an unforeseeable future into the next century.

I remember this most when the Columbine HS shooting happened. They claimed that god was punishing the godless liberals in Colorado for their sins and it was a warning to the rest of the christian community about what happens when you take god of schools (referencing the Engel v Vitale supreme court ruling). Same thing was done with Hurricane Katrina. So a narrative was developed from these events that we were being punished for our collective sin and if we didn't get involved in politics and steer the country back to the mythologised christian roots that the guest described, then we were going to become like the Roman Empire or Israel and Judea before, when they were conquered and overrun by other nations (often citing China, and then later "the muslim jihadists".

We must stand up to this and challenge it in every way possible: resist thru both words and thru social shunning at this point! Often the idea that we must engage them is wrong. When they are radicalized and show hatred, they need social ostracization. Dn't by their plumbing services, their products etc. I am vetting the ppl i buy such services from now!

It's deeply disappointing to see Brad Onishi, someone of Asian heritage and a person of color, perpetuating narratives that align with white Christian nationalism. Given his background, one would expect him to understand the damaging effects of racial stereotypes and the importance of challenging them. Instead, his stance appears to betray the very communities he is a part of, aligning with ideologies that historically have oppressed people of color.
Brad should recognize the responsibility he carries as a person of color to challenge and dismantle these harmful narratives, not reinforce them. His position is not only a disservice to the truth but also to the very communities that continue to suffer under the weight of these racist ideologies. It's a shame that he chooses to support a version of history and theology that contradicts the inclusive and diverse nature of the real message of Christianity.

Im glad that radical Catholics were brought up. There was a catholic extremist juvenile probation officer in Orange County who was a big influence behind the satan scare in the 80's. She also was an anti- punk rock and anti-heavey metal crusader. She founded the "Back in Control Training Center of Orange" where she gave seminars for parents on how to de-punk and de-metal your kids. It involved destroying all their music paraphernalia, barring them from associating with any of their friends and in some instance putting bars on the kid's bedroom windows. She destroyed families and children. I witnessed it
She actually testified in the trial against Judas Priest when the band was being sued for "causing two teens to commit suicide" (turned out it was probably their christian fundamentalist parents who were to blame).
Today she is has been involved with the catholic diocese of Orange County where she has been doing PR work for the diocese in the wake of some sexual abuse scandals.

My story is similar to yours, grew up in the 70’s and 80’s in Texas. It was my love for the natural world (creation) and then degrees in the sciences, and then 9/11 that revealed the incompatibility of Fundamentalist Evangelical belief system and my own. I was taught a 6000 yr old planet, that we are not related to animals. It isn’t possible to study biology, geology, and chemistry at a high level without conflict. It became impossible to check my brain at the door and be fed misinformation about Muslims, vaccines, DNA, stem cells, abortion, races, American history, the founding fathers etc etc. And then you add TV Evangelists, mega churches, toxic masculinity, and the business of selling Jesus.
Thank you for this discussion, my guess is there are many of us who have chosen to walk away and instead use our brain to critically think so our lives can be authentic in how we believe.

What a fantastic articulate guest! Will definitely check out his work. The Opus Dei connection totally makes sense. I'm in Australia and am a veteran of opposing Opus Dei on my university campus in Sydney. The university gave land and money on campus for them to build a college dorm and conduct their secret business. They have never been an active part of the wider university community and don't have very many public lecture programs or interface within the university or the wider community to speak of.
Fun fact, (sort of) Mel Gibson was influenced by Opus Dei and eventually he became even more extreme through the influence of his father. His parents are of Irish (Catholic) heritage, father American, mother Australian. Mel built a church in Malibu, The Church of the Holy Family/Church of Mel which does only Latin mass and is not only critical of the Vatican but has extreme anti abortion and anti contraception views, the same as Mel. There's anti semitism and racism also in the mix. It's always valuable to get the long view for a proper historical reference point on what we can see and understand in the present and this interview reaches back even to the Mayflower in some respects imo.

Brad Onishi and I have a similar story, then. I was raised in this. At one point, from 2016 to 2020, I was completely devoted to Jesus. All I cared about was Jesus and people. But I looked around and found myself alone. Everyone at church was, at best, distracted by their lives and where we were going for Sunday lunch. At worst, they were mixing Americanism with Christianity and diluting the potent message of Christ. They didn't seem to really care about Jesus, and many didn't seem to care about people. So I left.
There was a time I also could've been a Christian nationalist because I was surrounded by the seeds of it in my earlier life (before 2016). It's ultimately ironic, then, that what saved me from that life was being devoted to Jesus' message.

So I read the bible, cover to cover. That was enough for me to call bullshit lol. (I also blame the mid century sci fi authors I was consuming like pizza at that time). My brother is in the "quiver full" movement and is an active fash ist, isolating and indoctrinating his kids or "little Christian soldiers" as he said before I went no contact. How different young minds react to the brainwashing. EDIT to say: it was Methodist though, and we were hated by the Baptists as being not "real Christians" even back then, because we were honestly just more liberal than they were.
