      its new york city, look at that traffic. it's not like you're going anywhere in your unairconditioned truck. if enough people switched to smaller vehicles the continuous gridlock would solve itself. this would fit 3 in a single lane. Plus, you probably don't need a license for these so they can hire anyone.

    The only purpose of the pedals is so that it is legally allowed to go between cars and use bike lanes. I doubt the energy provided by the pedals is even a few percent in a typical day.

      The biking community shrinks a little every time a drunk slams into one while running a red light trying to sling drugs across the city of NY. Im pretty sure this quad will not provide proficient protection when involved in a collision when compared to the typical UPS truck. Judge as you will. But an open cab, and far less protection does in fact pose more danger to the user when any form of accident with speed occurs.

    I've been with UPS for several years and I can tell you this will only fly for two things: extremely developed areas where the conventional package cars have trouble getting around (thus why they're trying them in Manhattan) and for getting early AM next day packages out in other markets. The real national market for these will be those next day packages. Remember, getting those out can frequently mean ignoring the well planned and very efficient route to specifically get those next days out in time.
    Aside from those two limited cases, no way. They're way too small, it would take a stupid amount of time for the driver to get hub to the route area and back again and again. Doesn't matter if they hold 400 lbs, most packages are more bulky than they are heavy. It's more about space than weight. That's why package cars are so huge.

    • @CHA0SBLEEDS
      @CHA0SBLEEDS 2 года назад

      I can see them upgrading more employees to, "driver", newer drivers getting these e-bike routes, or even having a new category of driver so that they don't have the pay driver rates. It's easier to fill these up with small light packages and then use the trucks for heavy/bulky packages.

      @@CHA0SBLEEDS You forget one thing, it's a union job - and we're teamsters. Can't create a new job without negotiating it into the contract. Limited capacity to create a new route type. @@swbigfan1 Yep I worked @ UPS for 10+ years, when I was a general Labourer (in Canada) we were able to go with Drivers all the time to deliver packages especially if we wanted extra hours (we were limited to 5 hour shifts, but could do double even trip shifts as long as we had 8-12 hours of rest between our scheduled shifts).
      As General Labourer I was also given many jobs and different titles. Even things such as Trainer, Assistant supervisor, Package Deliverer etc, as long as I wasn't driving a truck I could go on routes with drivers and go to houses etc.
      A friend of mine was also able to do various driving tasks without being paid as a driver, and even had a few titles created for him without negotiating it with the union. They just offered him overtime and 12 hour shifts. So every day he got 5 hours @ normal pay and 7 hours overtime.

    • @swbigfan1
      @swbigfan1 2 года назад

      @@CHA0SBLEEDS Maybe union rules are more lax in Canada or maybe the examples you saw were just stuff that was done under the radar, don't know for sure. However I know when they wanted to start having some utility drivers (delivery driver who didn't have a fixed route but rather does sick day & vacation coverage) who'd drive if needed and "other work as assigned" if not needed they had to negotiate a new job category into our most recent contract. Based on that I'm pretty sure that they'd need a contract update if they were going to start a company wide deployment of these.
      Also, as far as your friend and driving without being paid driver wage. That wouldn't fly in the US, you need a different class of drivers license (Commercial Drivers License or CDL). Getting that is part of the new driver training.
      Mostly I'm guessing this is down to national differences in labor law. For example, no union member can ever hold any type of supervisor position and sups do all training (as you mentioned being an assistant supervisor & trainer) in the US. Basically no union member can EVER be in charge of another union member. We don't even have assistant supervisors. There are PT supervisors, a FT supervisor who is over several PT supervisors, and managers over them (who were rarely see in the Hub). Going to one of those positions is an interview process instead of a seniority based bid as all moves between union positions must be. Then if hired as a sup you leave the union, have a different benefits package, different vacation schedule, and are partially salaried instead of strictly hourly (PT sups are paid for 27.5 hours per week unless they work more than that).
      Just the fact that you talked about being GIVEN different titles is very telling, as a union position in the US I only change positions when I want to and then only through a seniority based bid process. My job performance and qualifications have no pay in the process. Available positions are posted, you sign up if you want it, and after 7 days they take the listing down and offer the position to the one who signed up with the most seniority.

    Is UPS SERIOUS?! They want to have drivers drive those narrow trucks with those small azz wheels on the busted up roads of NYC? There are potholes bigger than those wheels in these NYC streets. I hope UPS is properly insured bc if they put drivers in these trucks then I foresee many lawsuits!!! That truck looks like a glamorized scooter! 😳🙄

    If this cuts down on the number of double-parking delivery vehicles in Manhattan, it'll be worthwhile. UPS already has on-foot messengers (who don't drive a motor vehicle) delivering a huge volume of small packages in cities - mostly stuff that was shipped via air (i.e. Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air).

    • @Vageta2010

      If everyone had these you could get places in NYC instead of continuous gridlock. 3 fit in a single lane vs one car. The idea would be that once everyone switches to smaller stuff it gets safer for everyone involved(and just more efficient cause lugging around a ton of extra metal is just silly in a dense city)

    i have an ebike a fraction of its weight and I packed it with an auxiliary batter to get twice the amount of mileage. I could imagine UPS could fit these with two auxiliary batters to increase the range by 80 miles. That would hold delivery for an entire shift without recharge. I think this is a genius idea

      You’re right, let restrict private ownership of large vehicles in the city, no one needs a Ford F-150 in the middle of NYC, we encourage use of smaller cars and bikes while cutting down on the giant SUVs and Trucks that have no right to be in a city environment, that we we can also start cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions now that heavy vehicles that burn excessive gas are no longer idling in traffic

There only about 5% recyclable, an China the main producer of batteries and polluter of the world, dig ups 100s of millions of tons just to aquire a little of the rare material required to manufacture them.
