Your input/contribution is both measured and informative with no trace of malice or overt criticism of Wim Hof. Others on RUclips have no such scruples. Thank you for your sensible imput.

I taught the WHM to my Navy buddy. He was very fit and in good health already, a navy diver. He was well known for his "extreme" attitude. A few years ago, he had a massive wreck in his Jeep. He broke multiple bones, including his femur. The ER nurse said he refused all pain medication, and was focused on "some kind of breathing exercise". Josh made a miraculous recovery. He was running again in less than a year. Last year, he went to a local lake to practice WHM. He was found floating a couple days later. Knowing him, he most likely challenged himself to swim across the lake. He was one of the best of us...A loss that has deeply affected many. Take this shit seriously. Push yourself, but consciously and GENTLY. Be careful, PEOPLE LOVE YOU.

Just yesterday a 28 years old (medic at the start of his career) died here in romania while allegedly trying WHM under water in a pool at a party. Just because the technique is powerful doesn't mean we have to become arrogant or try to defy nature. Stay humble guys, thanks for the video.. Sadly the media in such cases will always focus on the negative side and how 10 people died from this in the last year. while ignoring the millions of people WHM helped. God bless

Wim Hof has many times stated to NOT do his breathing exercises while driving or submerged in water etc. Always in a safe environment sitting or lying down. He has also said many times to keep someone nearby when you start doing cold plunge or similar and never force yourself, doing too much too early. Because as building muscles, you need to build up your resistance to the cold.
The cold is a force of nature, not to be played with. You need to have a huge amount of respect for nature and what your body can handle. If you as parents can't watch over your naive teenagers, accidents are more likely to happen. If this teenager did more research and took precautions, this would've never happened. It is however very unfortunate and I feel sorry for the loss but Wim Hof is not to blame!

I’m very fortunate, the breathwork works for me. It’s an important part of my mental health care…a tool in my toolbox…it can bring me to a state of calm and peace. I use it often to prepare for meditation. When I use this method before meditation I have significantly fewer thoughts and less agitation and can feel that floating in the void detached from my body kind of feeling,I use the wim hof videos as my guide but only ever do what feels natural for me, I never push myself to match the reps and timing of breath in the videos.

  • @Dodgerzden

I'm extremely affected by the cold more than most people for some unknown reason. I consider 60° F to be cold weather. When training as a Marine, cold weather training demoralized me but I had no issues with desert training. Today my hands and feet get cold even in the summer when the temperatures where I live get up to 120° F. So one day I was watching Wim answering questions and someone asked if their hands and feet are always cold, should they do cold therapy. He said no, but that you should start by trying to immerse your hands and feet in cold water for a few minutes to start with and see how that works out. So I don't think Wim Hof is telling everybody they should be jumping into everything that he does.

I remember that video! I too have cold hands and feet, so I did what Wim said and just immersed hands and feet, then slowly did the rest of my body. And it worked! I have a deep respect for the power of nature, and this is very serious stuff not to be played with 🩵

I started with Wim Hof method but stopped seeing the same results and started to struggle holding my breathe so i found many other breathwork instructors here on youtube , breathwork beats and breathe with Sandy being my favorites. I was doing some breathwork with Sandy. I was at a hotel. I was really feeling it, My daughter was sitting on my lap. He said take a deep breath in and squeeze the locks if its part of your practice. Ive gotten light headed from squeezing before and had some really wild experiences, like my body twitching. But I never lost consciousness. This time. I went out like a light, fell backwards and had a seizure. I woke up and right away felt shame, like I knew i shouldve been more gentle and not squeezed so hard. So i run the video back
Passed out, hit my head and seized again
Its been a year and i havent been to the doctor. I definitely fucked up the back of my head, it feels kinda odd, outside and inside. I dont trust doctors, not sure what they could do about it anyways, so here i am just putting faith in myself and god to heal it.
Its been almost a year now and ive continued to do breathwork everyday.
To this day i ask myself what caused me to pass out. Because ive blasted off several times before without passing out.
The breathe is a beautiful thing to explore. Im still mad at myself for pushing too hard and passing out.

It's a very important topic that should be discussed much more. To most people it's plainly evident that the breathwork shouldn't be done in the water. But many still do it. So I tried to explain the why behind the danger of shallow water blackouts. Even if it's just one person who watches this and stops to do the breathwork in water would be worth all the effort and time that I put in.

Thank you for sharing this information. My father was a free diver, he used to teach us this kind of technique ..but; 1.)- not so exaggerated long like Wim Hof ( only a short time before he would dive under) 2) When diver has done this, as to hold breath longer, there is also ANOTHER BIG DIFFERENCE: They dive down deep! and the pressure on the lungs and the oxygen gets so heavy, that the oxygen is used in a totally different way, as to when you do this and lie down in a swimming pool. It's completely different! Also, my father said, that you can get a" high", when you stay down extremely long and not even want to come up to the surface sometimes. Before feeling so "nice"you should be going up already immediately. He himself fainted twice, just before reaching the surface...thank god, my mother saved him. ( she also dove and was a gymnastic teacher, and recognized it immediately ) Just saying... please don't do this on your own, and please be careful!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
01:40 🚫 *Hyperventilation during Wim Hof Method breathing alters breathing patterns, making it easier and more dangerous to hold breath until unconsciousness, posing a drowning risk in water-based practices.*
03:46 💨 *Increased breath-holding ability in Wim Hof Method may lead to unconsciousness due to lowered blood oxygen levels, presenting a risk in water, especially without awareness.*
05:34 ❄️ *Cold exposure combined with Wim Hof Method breathing can restrict blood flow, potentially leading to unconsciousness, emphasizing the need to separate the practices or take precautions.*
06:31 🚿 *Cold showers before ice baths can help prepare the body for cold exposure without the risks associated with simultaneous Wim Hof Method breathing, reducing potential dangers.*
07:27 🌊 *Misjudging competence gained from extended breath holds through Wim Hof Method may lead to shallow water blackout, emphasizing the importance of education, supervision, and practicing with awareness.*
08:50 🤓 *Education is crucial; understanding the risks of practicing Wim Hof Method breathwork in water can prevent tragic accidents, and spreading awareness about these dangers is essential for safety.*

What he says is correct but unnecessarily complicated. If you want a simple explanation, just Google “ shallow water blackout “ or “ spear fishing dangers. “ Here is the bottom line: if you hold your breath too long, you will die from lack of oxygen. To prevent you from holding your breath too long your body has a simple safety mechanism - you will blackout ( i.e. fall unconscious ). Once this happens your autonomic system automatically starts you breathing, but if you are in water you will breath in the water and drown.

It’s a shame …but Wim has warned numerous times NOT to do breath work in a pool.

Well, Conni, I never intended to promote fainting. But it's the nature of the method that this can happen - it's just simple physiology. And normally people who experience it don't wake up complaining that they have drifted off. But because the Wim Hof Method is widely practiced and accessible, it's the reason why I need to talk about the danger of shallow water blackouts. To be honest, if my video saves just one person from drowning, I don't care if I have offended you. And I gladly take all the blame and heat from the critics.

@@KitaroWaga i support you talking about the dangers but it's the way you talked so positively about passing out and fainting that really left a bad taste for me.
PS. As a breathworker, I come from the opposite camp (OA/Buteyko/Transformational Breath) and i also train others in a very in-depth 9 month program - in my world, we don't glorify passing out from hyperventilation, we practice safe breathwork.

Your self-promotion is disappointing@@ConniBiesalski This whole video is about practising SAFELY after all! Interestingly mentioning Transformational Breath is like WHM on steroids. Many WHM instructors are also OA qualified with 'no camps' mentality, just knowing when to use what. It's still quite hard to persuade people to try breathwork instead of popping pills so perhaps you could try to work together rather than Us vs Them mentality?

The point of the breathwork in WHM? It's to untrain the civilizational sympathetic-parasympathetic split, which crosses over perfectly to relaxing in the cold with high energy.

    ALERT! 😮
everyone listening here…Wim Hof tutorial and breathing videos NEVER SAY to HOLD your breath after a round of breathing! He ONLY says EXHALE & RELEASE the breath!
THEN you just rest, and breath when you need to. He only says to hold it for a few seconds before you end the round with an Exhale, NOT holding it. So you are misleading to the public giving them the wrong instructions.
