I'm 80 years old and have, recently, restarted the W.H breathing and cold shower regime. In the past, it has served me well. Your input/contribution is both measured and informative with no trace of malice or overt criticism of Wim Hof. Others on RUclips have no such scruples. Thank you for your sensible imput.
I taught the WHM to my Navy buddy. He was very fit and in good health already, a navy diver. He was well known for his "extreme" attitude. A few years ago, he had a massive wreck in his Jeep. He broke multiple bones, including his femur. The ER nurse said he refused all pain medication, and was focused on "some kind of breathing exercise". Josh made a miraculous recovery. He was running again in less than a year. Last year, he went to a local lake to practice WHM. He was found floating a couple days later. Knowing him, he most likely challenged himself to swim across the lake. He was one of the best of us...A loss that has deeply affected many. Take this shit seriously. Push yourself, but consciously and GENTLY. Be careful, PEOPLE LOVE YOU.
I'm really sorry to hear that and thank you for sharing your personal story.
Sorry for your loss. One of my friends also swam across a lake in freezing water while doing the Wim Hof method. Fortunately he survived, but I thought it was a really bad idea.
So sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story.
Condolences, friend 🙏. Limits are like elastic. When pushed gently, they expand. When pushed hard and fast, they break. Peace.
Just yesterday a 28 years old (medic at the start of his career) died here in romania while allegedly trying WHM under water in a pool at a party. Just because the technique is powerful doesn't mean we have to become arrogant or try to defy nature. Stay humble guys, thanks for the video.. Sadly the media in such cases will always focus on the negative side and how 10 people died from this in the last year. while ignoring the millions of people WHM helped. God bless
Wim Hof has many times stated to NOT do his breathing exercises while driving or submerged in water etc. Always in a safe environment sitting or lying down. He has also said many times to keep someone nearby when you start doing cold plunge or similar and never force yourself, doing too much too early. Because as building muscles, you need to build up your resistance to the cold.
The cold is a force of nature, not to be played with. You need to have a huge amount of respect for nature and what your body can handle. If you as parents can't watch over your naive teenagers, accidents are more likely to happen. If this teenager did more research and took precautions, this would've never happened. It is however very unfortunate and I feel sorry for the loss but Wim Hof is not to blame!
I’m very fortunate, the breathwork works for me. It’s an important part of my mental health care…a tool in my toolbox…it can bring me to a state of calm and peace. I use it often to prepare for meditation. When I use this method before meditation I have significantly fewer thoughts and less agitation and can feel that floating in the void detached from my body kind of feeling,I use the wim hof videos as my guide but only ever do what feels natural for me, I never push myself to match the reps and timing of breath in the videos.
I'm extremely affected by the cold more than most people for some unknown reason. I consider 60° F to be cold weather. When training as a Marine, cold weather training demoralized me but I had no issues with desert training. Today my hands and feet get cold even in the summer when the temperatures where I live get up to 120° F. So one day I was watching Wim answering questions and someone asked if their hands and feet are always cold, should they do cold therapy. He said no, but that you should start by trying to immerse your hands and feet in cold water for a few minutes to start with and see how that works out. So I don't think Wim Hof is telling everybody they should be jumping into everything that he does.
I remember that video! I too have cold hands and feet, so I did what Wim said and just immersed hands and feet, then slowly did the rest of my body. And it worked! I have a deep respect for the power of nature, and this is very serious stuff not to be played with 🩵
This is very useful information brought without any agression towards Wim Hof . Thank you!
I started with Wim Hof method but stopped seeing the same results and started to struggle holding my breathe so i found many other breathwork instructors here on youtube , breathwork beats and breathe with Sandy being my favorites. I was doing some breathwork with Sandy. I was at a hotel. I was really feeling it, My daughter was sitting on my lap. He said take a deep breath in and squeeze the locks if its part of your practice. Ive gotten light headed from squeezing before and had some really wild experiences, like my body twitching. But I never lost consciousness. This time. I went out like a light, fell backwards and had a seizure. I woke up and right away felt shame, like I knew i shouldve been more gentle and not squeezed so hard. So i run the video back
Passed out, hit my head and seized again
Its been a year and i havent been to the doctor. I definitely fucked up the back of my head, it feels kinda odd, outside and inside. I dont trust doctors, not sure what they could do about it anyways, so here i am just putting faith in myself and god to heal it.
Its been almost a year now and ive continued to do breathwork everyday.
To this day i ask myself what caused me to pass out. Because ive blasted off several times before without passing out.
The breathe is a beautiful thing to explore. Im still mad at myself for pushing too hard and passing out.
Good title. Thanks for sharing the message with the world. It will save lives.
I hope so!
@@KitaroWaga The unfortunate part is that you will never know who you saved. It is just a message spreading on the wind.
Great video with an easy explanation!!!🙏
Good to see a WHM Instructor come out with a video like that. Especially after all those videos from Scott Carney. I wish the Innerfire Academy would come out with a video like that as a reminder!!
Thank you for adressing this topic so thoughtfully!
It's a very important topic that should be discussed much more. To most people it's plainly evident that the breathwork shouldn't be done in the water. But many still do it. So I tried to explain the why behind the danger of shallow water blackouts. Even if it's just one person who watches this and stops to do the breathwork in water would be worth all the effort and time that I put in.
This was a very good video. People who are athletically inclined treat everything as a competition. There is a point of diminishing returns and one can get great benefit just from a very measured and moderate practice. I used to know someone who was literally sick from working out too much.
Good points and very well put.
Excellent advise and well explained. Thank you!
very important with scott carney trying to debunk the method with his ego trip that this is freely and deeply discussed.
To me I follow the Kitaro Waga method. You share youre competence, knowledge and experiences while also bringing in a good portion of realism. Thank you for that!
Cool, thanks!
Excellent. Thanks for this detailed explanation!
I am brand new to this whole method and I’m extremely excited about it. This video is very helpful and I’m happy that I’m watching it early on in my journey. Thank you for posting.!
Thank you for this. We all need to be reminded of the potential risks from time to time.
That‘s a fenomenal video! Thank you for creating it!
Valuable information! Thank you!
Super important video. Thanks for the helpful information, it was spot on!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent presentation on a very important issue!
Thank you, i learned a valuable lesson.
Really appreciate you and your way, inspiring my friend thanks
I appreciate that!
Your channel is honestly the best fitness and wellbeing channel on youtube
So many people misunderstand the wim hof method and its wrong to blame wim hof because he himself has posted a video stating all the risks
Its just that some people want to do cool stuff like wim without proper practice, and even with practice wim himself says those things are dangerous and he doesn't recommend them for everyone
I have a question: It shouldnt be an aim for me to go deeper into the breathing(i always to it lying on my bed btw) to reach that low oxygen level right
I usually do a lighter version of the wim hof breathing because i just dont like the feeling of taking extremely deep inhalkes(it makes me feel too light headed)
Am i missing out on the benefits of the wim hof breathing?
No, not at all. There's no need to go so far to hyperventilate that it makes you uncomfortable.
@@KitaroWaga Thanks for the reply, ill keep doing what i do
Thanks you for the message ! Whim hoff method is powerfall and it's so easy to outshine it's own capacity. We need reminders likes yours ! 🙏
Great! Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you liked it!
Great video! Been practicing for a month now and it happened to me a couple of times. And as you said the first time i thought I held my breath for four minutes… didn’t even realise that i have fainted…
It happened to me today as you said when i was fully committed and ‘into it’ when I was at the round 8 and holding my breath for 2 minutes but without forcing myself.
Very informative. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Thank you ❤
Yes, you never ever do the breathwork in the water. Breathwork beforehand in a safe comfortable space, swim after. Why is there confusion? My sympathies for those lost :(
Thanks man, You probably saved my life because I'm an "Extremist" person and I didn't know about the dangers of doing the breath work in water. Thanks for the video. 🙏🙂
Glad I could help!
It is good that these topics are raised about the Method, because only its good side is being talked about and not the bad. It should be known that everything according to the method must be carried out according to protocol and listen to the body.
This was a fantastic video for learning something new. That's fantastic to learn about carbon dioxide offset. The more you know. I guess that's how you comfortably trigger HIF formation.
I really like your videos, thank you. I am fairly new to WHM, so my question would be: how much time do you need to wait between the breathing and the ice bath, and what sort of breathing, if any, do you do while in the cold water? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this information. My father was a free diver, he used to teach us this kind of technique ..but; 1.)- not so exaggerated long like Wim Hof ( only a short time before he would dive under) 2) When diver has done this, as to hold breath longer, there is also ANOTHER BIG DIFFERENCE: They dive down deep! and the pressure on the lungs and the oxygen gets so heavy, that the oxygen is used in a totally different way, as to when you do this and lie down in a swimming pool. It's completely different! Also, my father said, that you can get a" high", when you stay down extremely long and not even want to come up to the surface sometimes. Before feeling so "nice"you should be going up already immediately. He himself fainted twice, just before reaching the surface...thank god, my mother saved him. ( she also dove and was a gymnastic teacher, and recognized it immediately ) Just saying... please don't do this on your own, and please be careful!
Great PSA, I now do my ice baths and WHM breathing on seperate days, it’s helped me stay on track
Thank you for this. Unfortunately some people who teach Wim Hof style breathing do not include warnings of the dangers. Wim Hof breathing is very safe if practiced correctly.
Grazie molto interessante ed utile
VERY NICE
sometimes i can feel atfer the breathwork (mostly during the relaxation/meditation part) that either my arms or another part of my body is shutting down, that if i don't move and jump up i'll fall unconscious or worse, so doing it underwater sounds very scary. I think with more practice i'll regulate my breathing better and be able to overcome that feeling, but water is a no-go for sure when i'm trying the breathwork
Great Thumbnail
One thing I don't see in WH videos is a focus on WHY you want to do this and what your goals are. This is crucial. At 77, with serious health issues, I just want to breath better and increase my O2 level and immune function. I am not trying to prove anything to myself or others. I have no fantasies about becoming another superhuman...If I were 37, well it might be different....
Thank you for this.
In Wims Videos ppl often start shaking or crying or laughing during the breathwork. Are they overpushing or what causes those emotions? I think i got unconscious 2 times and it is overall an awesome feeling while breathing, but i never ever had to laugh or cry
Being ordinary and normal, breathing, walking, sleeping normal etc. is a skill, powerful..
Your explanations are awesome. I’m not sure if you explained this in a video already but what type of breath work is Wim Hof doing while he is in the ice and actively heating his body up?
I don't know for sure, but it might be breath of fire.
Finally someone besides Scott Carney is speaking about this
does bath about 15celsius water helps? i do 7 minutes once a week.
Can u explain Tummo Breahting to me . During meditation, the monk's body produces enough heat to dry cold, wet sheets put over his shoulders. i thought ur body temperatur goes down when u do the breathing exercise
I notice on some breath holds uncontrollable shaking, almost seizure like. Could this be another symptom of the combination of lower blood oxygen + increased vasoconstriction?
I use to do three minutes horse stance just before ice bath and then go into the water. Is that okej to do? I use to submerge head under water in ice bath for in about 15 seconds. I try to just breath out and submerge head without breathing deep before. Maybe I breath councious a couple of breath before submerging. I am thinking of stop doing that. Should I stop to do that?
No, you're fine. The danger is hyperventilating right before or during taking an ice bath.
Thanks Kitaro. I practice 5 rounds every morning in bed on awakening . Since listening to your last awareness video l am very conscious to not overdo it. I look forward to to the breath holds and they’re easy. I am now concerned that l could potentially fall unconscious. Should l stop doing 5 rounds daily?
no, if it feels good and improves your well-being that's totally fine. Falling unconscious is the exception and if it happens once in a while when your lying in the bed, it's nothing you should worry about. Just be a aware of your environment where you do the breathwork.
What do you think of Buteyko breathing?
HEY, THANKS FOR THIS VID
I DO A LOT OF COLD PLUNGES AND WIM HOF BREATHING, I WOULD ALWAYS JUST DO BEFORE AND THEN AFTER 1 MINUTE JUMP IN, I DIDNT UNDERSTAND FROM THE VID - IS THAT DANGEROUS?
SRY FOR THE CAPS MY BUTTON IS BROKEN
today i almost fainted during the cold shower.i've made the breath first, then i get to cold shower trying to stay the most time as i can inside the water with my head in the cold water, but i've stopped out because i knew i was getting slower . is it correct the cold shower after then breath practice ?( I was in pannic when i almost dropped to the ground).
SO Rule of thumb: AFTER WHM WAIT 15 min and then go into the cold ? so to speak never do wmh and go instant into the cold? i thought its safe as long u dont hold your breath under water ?
So how should you breathe when you take a cold plunge? Thank you
calmly with long exhales. Deep inhale and then a long exhale.
Praise the LORD, He is GOOD!
Yesterday I did the breathing method and stood up to open the window while doing it. Passed out and hit the wall. I take full responsibility for that one 😅
Can’t sue the creator of the wheel for the accident you have with your car
But I know he did say himself that you should never do the whim hof breathing while in water because you can faint
Yes, I know. It should be obvious that the breathwork shouldn't be done in water but still, many people ignore these warnings because of the reasons I mention in the video. It's important to understand why this can happen.
Elegant and important. Everyone is different. But I love my breathing and ice baths . If your in open water , have people around you. Thank you for your concise explanation. 🙏❤🖖!!!
I never fall unconscious doing the Wim Hof method.
It's not a goal. But please still don't do the breathwork in water.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
01:40 🚫 *Hyperventilation during Wim Hof Method breathing alters breathing patterns, making it easier and more dangerous to hold breath until unconsciousness, posing a drowning risk in water-based practices.*
03:46 💨 *Increased breath-holding ability in Wim Hof Method may lead to unconsciousness due to lowered blood oxygen levels, presenting a risk in water, especially without awareness.*
05:34 ❄️ *Cold exposure combined with Wim Hof Method breathing can restrict blood flow, potentially leading to unconsciousness, emphasizing the need to separate the practices or take precautions.*
06:31 🚿 *Cold showers before ice baths can help prepare the body for cold exposure without the risks associated with simultaneous Wim Hof Method breathing, reducing potential dangers.*
07:27 🌊 *Misjudging competence gained from extended breath holds through Wim Hof Method may lead to shallow water blackout, emphasizing the importance of education, supervision, and practicing with awareness.*
08:50 🤓 *Education is crucial; understanding the risks of practicing Wim Hof Method breathwork in water can prevent tragic accidents, and spreading awareness about these dangers is essential for safety.*

Sometimes the music is louder than the voice
Does anyone else have to clear a bunch of mucous from lungs after their breathing sessions?
What he says is correct but unnecessarily complicated. If you want a simple explanation, just Google “ shallow water blackout “ or “ spear fishing dangers. “ Here is the bottom line: if you hold your breath too long, you will die from lack of oxygen. To prevent you from holding your breath too long your body has a simple safety mechanism - you will blackout ( i.e. fall unconscious ). Once this happens your autonomic system automatically starts you breathing, but if you are in water you will breath in the water and drown.
It’s a shame …but Wim has warned numerous times NOT to do breath work in a pool.
People who do the wim hof method in a dangerous location aren't smart.
3:57 please stop promoting using the breath to faint because it feels good 🤦
Well, Conni, I never intended to promote fainting. But it's the nature of the method that this can happen - it's just simple physiology. And normally people who experience it don't wake up complaining that they have drifted off. But because the Wim Hof Method is widely practiced and accessible, it's the reason why I need to talk about the danger of shallow water blackouts. To be honest, if my video saves just one person from drowning, I don't care if I have offended you. And I gladly take all the blame and heat from the critics.
@@KitaroWaga i support you talking about the dangers but it's the way you talked so positively about passing out and fainting that really left a bad taste for me.
PS. As a breathworker, I come from the opposite camp (OA/Buteyko/Transformational Breath) and i also train others in a very in-depth 9 month program - in my world, we don't glorify passing out from hyperventilation, we practice safe breathwork.
Your self-promotion is disappointing@@ConniBiesalski This whole video is about practising SAFELY after all! Interestingly mentioning Transformational Breath is like WHM on steroids. Many WHM instructors are also OA qualified with 'no camps' mentality, just knowing when to use what. It's still quite hard to persuade people to try breathwork instead of popping pills so perhaps you could try to work together rather than Us vs Them mentality?
Surely WHM, as a legal entity, will be proven not guilty and responsible for this unfortunate death.
hipoxia and water inmersion bad combination
Thanks for the information/warning. However, your mild voice regularly gets overpowered by the background music. I could definitively do WITHOUT the music.
There are more gentle ways..
i don’t understand whats the point of it then… there is no synergy whatsoever
The point of the breathwork in WHM? It's to untrain the civilizational sympathetic-parasympathetic split, which crosses over perfectly to relaxing in the cold with high energy.
@@ThePallidor domt see any synergy in that either tbh …fight or flight and relaxing in cold is just not a connection …
basically its two completely different things he does and hes tryin to link it up for no reason or promoting links that are not connected unless you word it the right way , not only that its deadly in combination and ive never herd him mention it like wtf is that all about
@@ohsoleohmio it's just not for you because u have held subconscious internal blockages & a degree of insensitivity . Better practice yogic breathing exercices & see how it works out for you .
@@ohsoleohmio your projections on this channel indicates a fair degree of internal ( or even anger at something in your life / sense of lack ) frustrations u have not confronted or processed yet . Maybe its time to address those emotional pend up issues at hand .
ALERT! 😮
everyone listening here…Wim Hof tutorial and breathing videos NEVER SAY to HOLD your breath after a round of breathing! He ONLY says EXHALE & RELEASE the breath!
THEN you just rest, and breath when you need to. He only says to hold it for a few seconds before you end the round with an Exhale, NOT holding it. So you are misleading to the public giving them the wrong instructions.
how about don’t do the wim hof method ever think about that, it’s a cult
