Captain Rick; first time viewer who is absolutely amazed at your breadth of knowledge and ability to survey equipment and explain it in detail extemporaneously. Remarkable!
I am planning to take sailing lesson next year and I am now trying to understand what it takes to live aboard full-time. Your instructions are direct and clear. Thanks for great video.
Thank you so much! Excellent product review. I set my phone to the side, thinking I would just listen to what you're saying, but I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen. The video is so full of information... presented quickly, concisely and fully explained. I'm going to forward this to my cousin who has a boat in need of a major refit.
Captain Rick, Thank you very much for posting this video. I truly and greatly appreciate your experience and insight. Contrary to what some might believe, this is neither a trivial, nor superficial topic. Alas, it is the mundane, everyday things/items that can turn into an enormous headache/problem. Thanks again!
+cmm170526 Yes, and this is what I think needs more attention... details and decision making that goes into every aspect of maintaining and living aboard a boat of any kind. Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for watching! :)
Dude, this is video gold. I've had my sailboat 1.5 years and looking for good info online for just as long. Your intelligent easily understood production is important and much appreciated!
The LED's also reduce the risk of fire. I have had many sockets melt and burn over the years. Great videos! The wife, kid and I will be in your neck of the woods on our boat in a couple years, cant wait.
Hey Rick, Another great video packed with valuable tips that can only be acquired by living the cruising lifestyle day in and day out. Really appreciate you passing on your knowledge, love videos like this. Thank you :)
+Rick Moore Rick, also wanted to tell you that I was sorry to hear that Lucky had passed. Lucky was certainly a joy, it was great to watch your videos of her mischievous antics. What a nice friend to have. Quite surprising for her to pass at 15 years considering the lifespan of the average African Gray. I must say though that Lucky had a better quality of life in her 15 years than most humans will every achieve living stateside..
Awesome video, Rick. I like the way you explain what you do, and how you do it. Especially your experience and well-founded opinion is good to know. It's always difficult to choose between items in the boat shop as the manufactures always happen to have the best product on the market. I find it interesting to hear a "long term and every day" user's opinion. I can't wait to see more of your product review videos.
+Jan Holst Thanks Jan, glad you enjoyed it.. happy to see so many positive comments about this video, wasn't sure how it would be received... seems like something we need to show more of! :)
well done ,from an old salt ,you never stop learning and when u do thats when u put the oar on your shoulder and walk in-land until some one says whats that and thats when u no your there .keep up the good work ,calm seas and good wind.
Thanks Rick! Good info as I will be reworking my Island Trader 40' Ketch I just purchased last month. I am just finishing up a Shanty Boat project and the LED lights are excellent for use in Tiny Houses and any RV running 12 volts.
I like your videos Rick!! Great viewing!! Your review of the barbecue was interesting!! I discovered that lining it with tin foil will give you some longivity!!!!
Very informative. I'm looking at buying another sailboat this winter and your video gave me a few things to think about…especially the toilet. I used to store a small chemical toilet in the aft settee in case of an emergency. You are so correct when you stated that they always fail at the worst time. It only has to happen once and you'll never forget it. Enjoyed the video as always and we look forward to upcoming installments. Cheers.
+LEE CUMMINGS Yes, there are two things you'll always find being discussed at gatherings of sailors... anchor follies and head stories! Lol Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching! :)
EXCELLENT idea about doing away with the (loud) Jabsco RW pump and adding a remote pump instead. I installed a Raritan RW-flush toilet recently and all they'd done was included a remote pump of their own choosing with the same sort of common-switch arrangement as what you describe here. Kudos for coming up with an original solution (which had to have been cheaper than paying PAR/Jabsco for theirs! :)
+DianaOfBurlington yes, so far it's working well on all 3 heads that were converted... and the boat is a lot less noisy when someone flushes one in the middle of the night now! :) Thanks for your comment!
i really enjoyed the information about the various equipment in this video, great information for the future when we plan on setting sail to the oceans. thanks .
+Rick Moore I think there are a lot of other newbies out there that would learn a lot from your experience. Plus you make it very easy and comfortable for us. You always make it seem like we're in your cockpit and we're just having a beer together.
I know this vlog is older but I guess there's a lot of vlogs I still haven't even watched! What I want to comment on is ..... You have such a wealth of information, Rick! I shared your channel with my uncle Jerry about a week ago because I know he has had a great interest in sailing from a long time ago. And he actually did want to sail. But I believe he might have changed his mind because of all the serious health problems in my family (and now including me, unfortunately). But he still has a lot of sailing knowledge under his belt. As a matter of fact (here's a secret), when I first checked out your channel, I was actually thinking of my uncle because I was really curious what it was all about. I'm really glad I did because it's interesting. And the traveling is interesting. .....Rick & Matty, I love you guys! You're like family to me. xoxoxo 👍😘🤗❤✌
One more thing...... Although I have no means to sail and I don't know if I would ever, but I can still pass your awesomeness along. I hope you're having a wonderful day Rick & Maddy. ☺🌷🌹🌷🌹
+peter Marr Sorry, those are trade secrets.. ;) Haha, just kidding! I plan to do more features on crew in the future, have them explain who they are and what their life was like before getting into sailing/traveling etc... figured that would be something of interest to viewers.. what do you think?
Spot on Rick I have watched all your video's they are all great ! I assume you kind of retired from the rat race and ran away to sea? Have you had any "I wish I hadn't done this trip moments? In my sailing experience ( since I was 10) the most memorable are the encounters with freaky weather with no horizon land in sight ! Anyway fair seas to you, keep up the great storytelling ! Oh and the beautiful girls as well .
+Rick Moore Absolutely! It's tough to get this sort of insight on the 'net. It really helps those of us that are either new or dreaming to have this real world experience with straightforward rationale for making your decisions. Not the "this product is great! (by the way, they're paying me to say that)" stuff. Excellent!
Hey Rick, really great, practical advice from a working boat. Yeah, a complete walk thru would be really cool. Do you have a water maker on board too. Would love to see where you fit that.
There is a lot of good information in this video. I really liked it. I have LED light bulbs on my boat, I need to address the hoses for the head and upgrade my fans.
hi just a thought, the separate switch for the pump is ok but unless you fit a delay on timer to the pump it will do the same cycling problem, as soon as the switch is detects water it will run the pump then as soon as the water clears the switch it will stop. the water will run back and rase the water level and cover the switch again. if you fit a delay on timer then time how much extra time it takes to empty after clearing the switch, then set the delay on timer to this you will end up with the solution you require. kind regards mark
Excellent product review. I love hearing from people who have actually used the products. I noted that the prices at that store seemed a tad high...roughly 2x the price here in the States. Were those US dollar prices?
+Rick Moore I mean you explained it so simple and good that even I understood .I wanted to say you would be a phantastic Shop Manager. Sorry for my english I am from Switzerland.
I just love to see videos like this.. but hey lol you dropped some thing :D. I just love 12 volts systems, every thing about it is so attractive. I plan on converting my room to run off inverters as much as possible and i plan on getting a couple UPS's also. Do you use inverters onboard?
+Actual simmer Yes, I run a main ships inverter that powers the outlets in the cabins and galley.. and a smaller inverter that is specifically just for the laptops and hard drives when I'm working so I don't have to run the whole house system all day long and run down the batteries unnecessarily.
great job on this vid. i am getting ready to build a steel hulled sail boat, looking every where for info, so i can try to get it right the first time, ha! more please!, thanks

I really enjoyed watching this video. It is very different from the usual but presents so much information about daily usage of important features on a sailboat whether it is for charter or live aboard. Can you also bring to life the on deck features of Sophisticated Lady, from the mast to the sails, to winches, standing riggings? All the important stuff that Sophisticated Lady uses to harness the wind and move forward on the water. And, I enjoy watching the videos featuring a variety of girls as well. Thanks Rick.
+Réal Gagnon Yes, we have a full set of videos still in the works, next major ones will be upgrades to electrical system, solar panels, refrigeration, etc... and then a 2-part set of videos about the sail replacement coming through Doyle sails in next months. Should we make some videos about the girls too? ;)
Rick I can't help but imagine that you want the same roaming underwater. Ever thought of getting some kind of underwater ROV to show off various reefs? With regards to your line, put two inline check valves just past the outfeed of your pump. You can even Tee it off and put your manual pump on a second line which joins up again. Something is wrong with your current check valve if it's coming back into your electric pump. And curious about your computer setup. Do you switch to the high voltage DC instead of running the power to AC to push the brick? I'm assuming you're on a MacBook of some sort.
+BeeRich33 I actually have exactly what you describe with the 2 check valves back to back.. they still leak back down to sump over time.. but the addition of the new remote activation switch has eliminated the problem of the constant cycling of the pump. There's an update on all these subjects coming soon, so stay tuned! :)
4 toilets on Sophisticated Lady??? Wow! Love the idea of the in-line water pump.

+Rick Moore Girls, sails and rum and Coke is a good blend. Thanks Rick and looking forward to your next sailboat upgrade videos.
great video Rick, one of the other videos you have a regge singer from Tortola, where can I buy his music?thanx
Is it cheaper to do upgrades/overhaul your boat down in the islands?
Have you through about solar Equ. Pannels, a windturbine. If so, I know where to get them from.
Not sure what you mean about the power... I use a small 12V inverter of about 600w that converts to 120v and then the laptop power supplies plug into that.
Inverting twice is a waste, that's all. Laptop on high voltage DC, that's how I see it. Checkvalves...should work.
+Rick Moore
Great video Rick, a lot of good information here which I found very useful.

doug's the reason, i got the bug to do this !!!

ha-ha-ha)) Advertising toilets from Rick )))
+Kraund 85 BELIEVE Me... NOT my favorite thing on the boat! Lol Have one apart as we speak... NOT pretty. ;)

Why not just change the brushes rather than chucking the whole thing? get brushes for about $5 for a set rather than $50 for a new fan..
