2024 The Hero's Journey is nearly complete.
It’s not that we don’t deserve a hero.
It’s the very fact that we *believe* that we need one that’s holding us back from freedom. We are made to believe that we won’t be strong enough. That a single person can save us. We are poisoned with that belief so we stay silent. In reality, we can *all* be heroes. Together, we can start that fire to light the endless night.
The masses aren't capable of heroism, it takes an individual who rises above the mediocrity of the masses.
it's both a fact and and a sad paradox; to act alone is to die alone, so people wait for a hero to come to signal that they can act. The hero acts as an authorization to act, a sign that action is not futile. So... we wait.
That's why collectively, WE need to be the ones that value courage over life. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
@@ryanwarunek8385 Rise, brother. Lets talk later
that sounds gay
Seen some comments questioning whether this is out of the vocalist’s range.
As a singer, I can say;
She’s RIGHT at the edge of her voice’s range. Not struggling, but at her limit.
And then she pushes it even further with the “keeps me alive” phrase.
That’s why this is such a powerful performance, that urgency of being on the edge.
She is probably what we would call a Mezzo-Soprano, maybe even an Alto, so not the highest pitch type of female voice. But that’s why her voice is more meaty, more full and holding that heavy, strong tone which gives her belting such a great quality and honestly it makes the song.
Ok who asked?

The hero who rose to save the people failed. The second hero tried to prove the people could be saved, and it was all he could do to make them *want* to be saved. The third hero must be a new kind: a kind of hero who teaches the people to save themselves.
The first rule of helping anyone is that they must want to help themselves.

Protoman was right. The fact that we wait on heroes is why we deserve none.
Are you saying we the fans need to write Act 3? That's pretty dumb.
It would also be so goddamn meta it goes all the way around to completely brilliant. SOMEBODY LAY A BEAT.
Fool. A hero arises when someone, anyone, finds the strength to make that choice themselves. Strength is for protecting what is valuable, not lording over others. .
@@josecarbia8181Fool. There are no heroes. Mankind is doomed.
@@heyitsjustaz Self-centered as usual. Mankind isn't doomed just because you aren't capable of saving it. We live in the most prosperous age in history due to the men and women who sacrificed everything in the name of hope. Look up, not away.
@@josecarbia8181 I was just quoting Protoman. He literally says "there are no heroes, mankind is doomed". You should probly relax.
And anyway, the whole message behind every album seems to be that people need to rise up as a whole, not sit around waiting for someone else to change things for them. The message is supposed to inspire all of us to work towards our goals, not just sit around fan worshipping the people who have accomplished things and telling ourselves we can't do the same.
Maybe some day they'll see a hero is just a man who knows he is free.
Oh god it's like the first time hearing REAL music all over again. This made me stand up and go "YES! YES! MORE!"
Move over, other music. You've been replaced.
I love Gambler's voice. I don't get when people say she's out of her range on this one - she sounds awesome to me! Then again, I'm not a musical person, but even so, if she's out of her range, if she's screaming her lines, it serves to show just how dire their situation is and how passionately her character believes in the need to save her home.
In the live version, she kinda remunded me of a female meatloaf. in this version, the song isn't as powerful. maybe that's where people are coming from?
Jayden Crowe That might be it. I dunno. XD Maybe there are some singers among us.
+Jayden Crowe Dude, female meatloaf.... that'd be the bomb
+Jayden Crowe Which I just don't get personally, as I MUCH prefer the Gambler's singing in this version. May just be my aversion to live recordings, I don't know. But I am beyond hype for Act III!

That final choir brings me to tears every time. Their voices fit so nice, it's beyond beautiful.
So much power, how can we hold it?
I so see this song and understand this as a battle for a city that they might not be able to survive with outside armies approaching. However I think it is about crime in the city. Not so dramatic. I live 50 miles north of San Francisco, California, and the "city by the bay" is a dumpster fire. I recommend not coming to California, Oregon, and Washington,; as they are all dumpster fires. Stay clear for now, perhaps the next 10 years will see a change of improvement/normalcy. Stay away!
The music is super awesome and I am sharing it!!!

@@aaronm8694 Like any monumental task, one must break it up into manageable parts. No radical half measures will suffice. We must start with ourselves and build our way up. Perfect our respective skill sets and when we are strong, help lift up others and combine resources. Form a faction united under a banner. Strive to create technology, culture, resources and a plan for hope. Don't settle for going home after work or school and turning your brain off with non stop video games or booze. Use your precious little time to do things that actually matter.
Can't wait to hear the whole album when it releases in 2032.
Prediction - best way for this story to end at this point is a large-scale cultural shift in the city. Heroes like Mega Man matter not for what they do, but for how they can inspire the common people, and revive spirit of those who are the dead. It's not the Proto Man that matters, it's the Protomen. After all, a hero is just a man who knows he is free.
Hopefully the citizenry casts off their apathy to get rid of a tyrant who they originally supported in his rise to power promising better lives for them with no intention of actually doing so.

How can a song about Mega Man be this good?!
Whats up with the hate for Gambler? She's awesome.
+mkolorz I agree but if I had to guess, people were used to the other vocals and this style differs enough from what they were expecting from the Protomen that it grates on them.
It's like I've rediscovered music again. Been a fan for 20 years, please don't stop making music.
To those who think that this song is about Trump, I have something to say: N- no. This song was originally unveiled to the public on August 31, 2012. Trump didn't announce his campaign until June of 2015. There is simply no way on Earth that the song was originally conceived as a Trump anthem of any sort in any sense.
And honestly, as a lover of The Protomen, I hate to see their music being politicized without their knowledge. It does a disservice to the band and its audience.
isn't this song about Megaman?
We dont really know, since the full album hasnt been released. The Protomen albums are concept albums based on dystopian re-imagining of the Megaman universe. So your question will only be answered when this song is contextualized with the rest of its album and, therefore, the Protomen mythos as a whole.
That's literally the dumbest shit I've ever read.
J Bell what? nothing was dumb and if it's the dumbest thing your ever read you've lived a really small life

+TheGogginator So the tracks from the album Act III won't have that awkward dominant reverb/delay? I hope they won't.
+TheGogginator I actually prefer the live version, it just had a better feel to it, this version just feels a little too clean.
+torkair72torino agreed!
When I was young, couldn't stand to believe it
Somewhere there was a sun left to shine
Now my heart won't be still till I've seen it
Won't be still till I've made it mine
There's a fear, can't be seen, it surrounds me
As afraid of the dark as the light
Was a time, long ago, these were safe streets
Now I'm the only one that keeps me alive
Keep me alive!
But I know a hero will come
There's a face that I've seen in the windows
There's a face of a stronger man
When I turn, as a leaf when the wind blows
Gone away is the will in his hand
You've been fed what they wanted to feed you
You've been bled of the will to survive
Now you stand just as long as they need you
But you're the only one that keeps you alive
Keep you alive
But I know a hero will come
And the night, the night will be torn apart
And I know we won't fight alone
And the spark that we carry will turn the dark into
A flame, a fire, a light
There must be an end to the darkness
No one will come. This City is dead
But all of your heroes are gone
And the blood that they spilled is on my hands
A darkness will block out the sun
Not a thing can be done with so few men
That a hero couldn't do!
When the voice from the shadows calls you
When the wind whips past your ears
Will you stand when the weight is upon you
Or will you go to your knees in fear?
There's a chance, though I know it's a long shot
And the City is out of time
All for naught if your heart stops beating
'Cause you're the only one that keeps it alive
God, keep it alive!
But I know a hero will come
And all of your heroes are gone
Someone's got to
No one left to
Bring back the light
Bring back the light
And I know we won't fight alone
A darkness will block out the sun if we can't
Find a way to hold back the night
Find a way to hold back the night
We can hold out past the endless dark
All a fire needs is a single spark
Thank you for this
I’ve held back the night well enough to have made it through the darkness of 2020.
Now it’s 2021, and though we’ve done well enough for many of us to make it to this point alive, still we ask: will a hero ever come?

@MultiTarded Streets of fire. You'll notice certain similarities to that and the protomen.
@MultiTarded Look up Meat Loaf, specifically songs like "Bat Out of Hell". He pretty much codified the style that the Protomen love in many ways. The same guy who wrote that song--Jim Steinman--also wrote the music for Streets of Fire.

Anyone else kind of worry that this is the last song in Act 3 and they plan to leave us on a cliff hanger?
I have legit lost sleep over this.
@@talljesuschrist I think Steve means, when (if) they release Act 3 this will be the last song on the album. The trilogy will end with a cliffhanger.
@MultiTarded yup, all three albums are a full story, act 1 establishes things and intros Rock, Thomas, and Proto. Act 2 is a prequel that shows the backstory of Thomas, Albert, and Emily. Act 3 is [most likely] the sequel that finishes the story. Also there's a fun fan theory that The Cover Up is a dramatic retelling of events between the end of Act1 and Act 3.

Tell me now
Is there a man among you here
Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight
TELL ME MAN
Is there not one in all your ranks
Is there not one who values courage over life
They looked to me once
Now they turn to you
Do you understand now
Do you see that the truth is they don't wanna change this
They don't want a hero
They just want a martyr
A statue to raise
I've given everything I can
There are no heroes left in man
So it begins
No matter which one of us lives
the ground we're standing on will crack and blow away
And you will fight
But when you fight you fight alone
and in the end you'll see there was no other way
I've been here before
I stood where you stand
They called me their hero
The hero of man
But why should we save them when they stand for nothing
If they deserve life let them stand for themselves
We've given everything we can
There are no heroes left in man
They'll watch you die to save their lives
They will not stand here by your side
We've given everything we can
THERE ARE NO HEROES LEFT IN MAN
So let them watch as we decide
The very fate of all mankind

The Protomen is a rock opera about 2 of the world's leading in robotics, Thomas Light and Albert Wily. Wily frames Light for the murder of his own fiance, and uses lights robots and other machines to spread his influence, replace the human work force, and essentially rule the world, while Light creates the advanced fighting robot Protoman, who is thought to be destroyed in battle. Light gives up and builds a son named Rock. Rock hears about his brother's fight, and decides to arm himself for vengeance. He fights Protoman, who survived his battle, and puts him down while the people sat and did nothing to aid him in his freedom fight. Rock loses faith in humanity and leaves them to their doom. The story isn't over, but it has yet to be finished. That's where Hold back the night comes in.
I used to think people were inherently good, if sometimes misguided, and that they were far smarter than characters like Dr. Wily would take them for. I thought that when a con-artist like Wily came along people would see through them and their schemes instantly and deny them power over them of any kind. I was sure that something like The Protomen could never happen in real life because people are better than that. They're better than fear, and control.
...I don't think that anymore.
