- The Vhembe Biosphere Reserve (VBR) and UNESCO's Regional Office of Southern Africa (ROSA) celebrated World Environment Day at Happy Rest Nature Reserve, focusing on the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience." This impactful event brought together learners from Gogobole Primary School and key stakeholders, including LEDET, Makhado Local Municipality, the University of Venda, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment. The celebration aimed to raise awareness about land degradation and climate change impacts while inspiring young learners to take an active role in environmental conservation.
Highlights included an interactive session on waste management by Mr. Tshivhula Humbulani from the Makhado Local Municipality, where learners explored the consequences of waste on the environment. Citizen scientists from VBR showcased river health monitoring techniques using tools like MiniSASS and water quality probes to assess ecosystems. Learners were fascinated by the demonstrations and eager to learn how these efforts contribute to community well-being.
