    Next time you do a T weld on flat plate again take your acetylene torch and put some heat on the side opposite the weld to pull it back straight or straighter. The metal always bends to the heat. It works better when it's still warm.

    That looks really great! I love the flatbar on the outsides.
    I would definitely fill the area on outside of frame to prevent water and road salt sitting in there. Stuff like that for filling holes and not really structural, I run a quick downhill, colder weld. Grind nice and its sealed. If you try running a hot weld, yeah it might just undercut and be bad.

    Simple solution would be to take a piece or rod that fits inside the back where the clamp goes, weld a little bit of flat iron that has the same width as the v-blocks do and slide them over and keep them there. Odd that they don't provide a storage means. Checked the 'manuel" and nada. They give you a storage option for the hex afaik, right? It's almost like it's an afterthought.

    Only thing id have done different would have cut a relief for the top flange, so the tow plate would be flush with the top of the frame rail.
    That way if you get a sub frame mounted dump body you can weld the pivot angle to the tow plate.
    Your welding is excellent! Weld those frame rails to the side plates so the rust jacking doesn't start there.
    Anxiously awaiting the light boxes, i bet they are spectacular!
    Thanks for the extra effort making videos!!

    Ductility is the word for less brittle. I would step up to .045 size when running dual shield as it's slightly cheaper and you would run a lower wire feed rate. That saw is nice but all those miter cuts could have been done with the other saw by turning the piece around.

    I just recently rebuilt the gearbox on my 20 year old Milwaukee abrasive chop saw and feel like it was well worth it since that was the first time ever though it cost more to rebuild it than what a Dewalt abrasive chop saw sells for new. But, the current Dewalt and Milwaukee offerings are toys compared to my 20 year old Milwaukee. That said, if I ever buy a new one, it’s definitely going to be one of those new Evolution saws you have there. Nice looking job on the hitch plate. If I could recommend one addition, it would be a piece of that 1/2 x 4” flat bar across the top edge to act as a stiffener for the pintle hitch.

    34:39 i wrote on the bottom of the feed well "fluxcore ribbed wheel". Easy mistake to make, even if you've welded for a while. Especially since some times you get away with it (depending on the quality of the fluxcore).
    So you don't get a bend in the plate (that pulls). One, don't weld in the same spot twice, stitch weld and allow to cool AND pretension your plate in the other direction to counteract the force of the pulling weld. You don't want to go overboard for the same reasons you don't want to pull on a weld, but giving the plate a small arc with a hydraulic jack rig (for example) would give you a flatter result in the end. A perfect tool for this would be one of those tiny, tiny hydraulic jacks that are no bigger than a box of screws from the hardware shelf.

    Hello J.C love your channel, and as always, love your work, but as you say (and I don't mean this in a negative way at all) you are not a welder. I think your machine is too small for 1/2" plate. Typically a 300A machine would be the min size, 350A is more like it, it will allow you to properly run spray transfer using 0.45 wire dual shield for 1/2" plate, with the correct C10 gas of course. With your smaller machine and 1/2" plate, I would have most likely selected stick welding, which would be well within the capacity of this machine. That way you are ensured to have proper root penetration. Problem with MIG (and all MIG welding for that matter) is it can look good but it can also be a bad weld. No way to tell unless you first made a test piece then cut and etched. With your smaller machine that is what I would have done, a test piece to ensure the machine was up to the task. I think Peter should have offered you better advice with an alternative process once he found out about the 1/2" plate. As always great work, excellent attention to detail! Take care, Joe

      if i have learned anything about welding, it is these two things...there is textbook theory and there is real world application. those two do not always the same. i have owned hundreds of trucks with hitch plates. most were poorly done, inconsistent, and inadequate short circuit mig welds. many seemed so awful i couldnt believe the hitch plate stayed on the frame without any load pulling on it at all. yet they were bowed, twisted and bent without a failed weld. many times i would remove these plates only to have missed a tiny weld. it amazed me how a thin 1" weld could stop me from ripping the plate off. i could raise it in the air with the gradall and drop it with a hard shock but it still held. it is only as good as the weakest link. what is the weakest link? is it the weld or the fact that we are welding 1/2" plate to a 5/16" frame? is it the strength of the 1/2" mild steel compared to the strength of the 5/16" heat treated truck frame? or is it the direction of the grain structure in the mild steel plate as it correlates to the load being applied? is it going horizontal or vertical? is the machine not capable or high enough amperage? all i can say is, the dual shield process is definitely a hotter better penetrating process than the traditional short circuit mig i have done in the past. as i watched the weld form, i saw the metals merge. i had to take my time, watch closely and fill each side before moving. was is hot enough to create a satisfactory weld? is this hitch adequate for the intended use? is it enough for capacity of the truck? i think it is. can it be broken or fail? only a foolish man thinks it cant. i am learning a lot. what i do know is "ignorance is bliss". the more you learn and understand, the more you realize just how wrong you were doing things before. im not a closed book. i listen. i am always wanting to improve. advice, tips, tricks and experience makes the difference. a big machine in the wrong hands can be just the same as a small machine in better hands. as far as what peter suggested, i am certain he has my best interest in mind. he just drove 9 hours to come here. he inspected what i did and advised me on some improvements i need to make.

    STOUT. The hitch has a look that says 30K lbs for a truck rated at less. That is how I like to do it. I just added a 16K lb hitch to a truck only rated to pull 7500. In this way I never have to worry about the hitch being a weak link. All the other components: receiver, hitch pin, etc are similarly overrated. As it should be. The cost difference was minimal ($200) for the peace of mind provided.

    I guess my question would be, why would you want the hitch plate welded on (instead of bolted or riveted), just in case someone (maybe like me,? LOL) wants to remove hitch plate for something like modification, frame change out or repair, crossmember replace or repair? I ask this since everything else seems to be bolted or riveted .Enjoy your videos!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  4 месяца назад

      you will almost never find a heavy hitch plate bolted. it is usually always welded. welding is permanent. that is what i want. i dont want to risk broken bolts or nuts backed off. i want the most unified connection i can get. when you bolt it, you take metal away. when you weld, you add.
