The only thing that was remotely disappointing about this set is that: 1. I wanted more. These matches were soooooooooooooo good!!! These matches were godlike. 2. This is the last time we'll likely hear Prog behind the mic. :( PROG, YOU ARE A LEGEND GOOD SIR!!! Seriously, Prog's smash bros commentary is among the best commentary I've heard for anything ever, and to top it off, his passion and love of the game and the community is sooooooooooo amazing and inspiring!!! THANK YOU PROG!!!
Funky-Tizzle It is, but I think Prog is gonna go on the road to recovery. Plus, he's still gonna be on the scene, helping run tournaments behind the scenes and maybe pitching his voice to the community in other fashions. Heck, maybe he'll be a player now.
Yeah and that list puts Dr. PP 7th, when he's clearly a top 3 player. He won Apex 2015... So Smashboards isn't right, neither are MIOM rankings. Armada is actually displeased with the MIOM rankings because he believes there's a bias towards Mango. Armada actually has the best record against gods and non-gods in Melee. However, because of his retirement, people seem to forget that he ruled Melee for 2+ years (never lost a set)
legendaryGrunt93 Go look at mango's AMA on Reddit and you'll see so much support towards Hbox's comment on it and so much hate toward mango as an individual.
I think Mango lost 6 whole games in this tournament, and 4 of them were to HBox, lol (1 was to Axe and I think he lost another game somewhere). He didn't drop a single set, and he destroyed M2K. What an incredible run. This run of his at this year's EVO was legendary.
Hungrybox's edgeguarding still has room for improvement but with that said he edgeguarded better than he ever has vs Mango before. That was great to see!
Damn I'm surprised Mango got that good, they were all pretty much equal back in the days... except for Wife, maybe. ^^ I wish Isai would start playing melee and go try hard again.
I think only 2 people could return from old times and put up a fight with the top 10. Azen and Isai. Unlike the other top players from back in the day, their tech skill could probably keep up.
patelkedar No they couldn't. Azen is solid but his playstyle is very read based and neutral focused, and not as effecient as a modern Marth like PewPewU. He did show up late last year and he did okay in the MD/VA scene but similtaneously failed to make much ground against its best players like Nintendude. Isai can't be bothered and is probably having fun being the best/equal best with Superboomfan 64 player in North America. The one currently doing best in the modern scene is KDJ since he seems to have genuinely improved a lot since the MLG days.
Question I need help on (I'm a smash 64 and not a melee). Is Jigglypuff's Down-air not effective or anything? Cause I know it's a pretty fast execution when you can connect down-air into rest as a combo. I'm no pro-gamer, but I wonder if someone who is a smasher can help me answer this.
Down air combos into rest in 64, but not melee. Down air can be effective, but Hbox's spacing with back air is really amazing, and down air is not very effective for spacing
I know, i'm a smash 64 player, In fact, a better combo in 64 would be a down-air, into up-tilt into up-air, up-air, rest (if starting at 0% damage). Anyways that's not the point, I was asking earlier why it's not as effective in melee.
hey guys I have a question, so I know theres the losers backet and then the winner of that can come back to be in the finals match but is the winner of the grand finals the end all? was always confused about how evo sets up tourneys
It's a double elimination system. Everyone starts in the winner's bracket, if you lose once you go in the loser's bracket and fight your way against other "losers" to have a chance to fight in the final against the winner of the winner's bracket. In the grand final, the guy coming from the loser's bracket need to win 2 sets in order to win the tournament, vs 1 set for the guy coming from the winner's bracket.
Boooooooriiiiing. They really need to reduce the time in half... like 4 min max. I was physically there and resorted to playing a game on my phone waiting on Marvel. Street Fighter, Marvel, Killer Instinct, EVERY OTHER GAME AT THIS TOURNAMENT had some form of pressure from possible time overs. It helps with keeping the game from getting boring and overdone. It makes the players have to take risks if they're behind which leads to epic comebacks we all love to see. I say either lower the clock time or bring in a smash ball. It makes things more exciting to watch and why would it be SMASH Brothers without a SMASH ball? This game was such a bore.
Ok first of all, melee is a lightning fast game. Certain matchups are campy just like any other fighting game. MOST other matchups end in less than 5 minutes, some end in seconds. Second, if you are not interested in a particular game, then you can't expect to be excited by everything that happens. The first few times I watched Marvel I had no idea what was going on, everything looked like an autocombo and I was bored as hell. Now that I understand more about the game, I enjoy watching it (even morrigan/akuma fireball spam moments). Lastly, this is melee, not brawl. There is no smash ball, nor would it be a good idea to have a smash ball. Final smashes are totally imbalanced and some of them are unblockable/unavoidable. Super combos in SF/umvc3 etc need to be combo'd into, or some kind of set up needs to happen in order for you to actually connect one. Not the case for most final smashes.
The only thing that was remotely disappointing about this set is that:
1. I wanted more. These matches were soooooooooooooo good!!! These matches were godlike.

how come prog isn't gonna commentate anymore?
Funky-Tizzle He's had livers issues that limit his energy and mobility. He hasn't been able to fix them despite having issues for roughly 2 years.
Johnknight1 maaan that's really unfortunate =/
Funky-Tizzle It is, but I think Prog is gonna go on the road to recovery.
Plus, he's still gonna be on the scene, helping run tournaments behind the scenes and maybe pitching his voice to the community in other fashions.

Mango is amazing.. He has the best smash tourney record in ssbm history now. Congrats to him and congrats to hungrybox for making it to the finals.
Are you sure? Armada might have that title actually.
patelkedar
he meant try hard mango
thugjuice69 lol it's a shame that all his tourneys are recorded and not just his "tryhard" ones
mango might have the title now. what? you havent heard of the legend of tryhard mango? this is 20XX
Yeah and that list puts Dr. PP 7th, when he's clearly a top 3 player. He won Apex 2015...

At the exact moment when Hbox lost he went to congratulate Mango. That tells you what type of person he is. Well played from both of them
legendaryGrunt93 Go look at mango's AMA on Reddit and you'll see so much support towards Hbox's comment on it and so much hate toward mango as an individual.
Ruben Marquez They're both asshats but they have lots of respect for one another.
Andrew Thomas Mango has very little respect for Hbox. He has said it before and he'll say it again.
Will Rieflin As of recently their relationship has been improving, but that's just a rumor I've heard.
Pretty sure the other top 5 would all step out of the spotlight for a sec instead of going straight for the handshake and hug

Its so crazy to compare this hbox to now, mango as well they have progressed so far.
I really wanted to see the bracket reset...
Quick question: is Puff's pound recovery unbanned now? Or is there a certain amount of times you can use it?
i don't think it's ever been completely banned but as long as you use it for recovery and not just to stall it's good...
Well, I think there's a limit cuz I noticed Hungrybox didn't use it the one time he fell out.
What happened to all the other old school players from the smash documentary? Ken, Wife, Korean DJ, Azen, PC Chris, etc? Are they still playing?
Damn I'm surprised Mango got that good, they were all pretty much equal back in the days... except for Wife, maybe. ^^ I wish Isai would start playing melee and go try hard again.

Ah ok, that's cool. Thanks for the reply
Try a down air into an uptilt and then rest. That works really well in Smash 64
I know, i'm a smash 64 player, In fact, a better combo in 64 would be a down-air, into up-tilt into up-air, up-air, rest (if starting at 0% damage). Anyways that's not the point, I was asking earlier why it's not as effective in melee.
H-box puts in work with those rests holy shit
2014 Mang0 looked fresh asf
hey guys I have a question, so I know theres the losers backet and then the winner of that can come back to be in the finals match but is the winner of the grand finals the end all? was always confused about how evo sets up tourneys
yes basically, the winner of both brackets face off.
so are there prelims to choose whos in winners and whos in losers bracket?
Jared strouse i think so, they have pools/group and then they move on from there.
It's a double elimination system. Hahh Lord! :/ if i could have the chance to be part of the championship only once!!! :'(
How did Mango get that tag?
high school nickname because he kept complaining about being hungry and wanting a mango while playing counter strike
its funny how mango is so chill and sitting then you see h-box standing
yes i do realise that mango is trying
So true about confident Mango and angry Mango lol
could someone tell me how to use more than 4 characters in the tag, weather it be a hack or emu
it's a hack.
link, or too lazy?
ChaosBreaker8828 not actually a full hack. sleepyk sent them an action replay memory card with the names already made on it.
i see, that makes more sense.
Throw Up to Rest
HyperX bought me here
I think Mango only wins at finals or semis when there is a title or something on the line...
Apex 2014 he didn't win.
But we'll see this year.
***** And then Mango rekt him in 4 other tournaments after Apex 2015. One of them included Leffen straight out quitting. :D
***** Search up Mango vs Leffen, INY, Press Start, and Bam7
Mango's hat D:
HappyBox PLS :'(
Mango's not that great, I know for a fact I could at least 3 stock him.
Gr8 b8 m8 8/8
MANGOOO
Hobos is such a good loser, much respect
now he outplaces mango at every event :)
+platanom3n Dreamhack and GOML :)
