I felt the same. Left big 4 at 28 around 2013. Got unbelievably lucky with it being the app boom period.
My app took off, and I ended up retiring at 35. I'm 39 now and don't regret a second of it!
But let me be honest. It was luck. Most people won't succeed.

    1. The problem with companies is how they constantly eat away at your time.
    2. It's nice to have a lot of things, but when you're always working, it can feel like materialism isn't worth it.
    3. Entrepreneurship means more success and freedom.

Find a craft that you enjoy and become good at it. Share that journey on social media so that you can eventually monetize from it. I was able to do that with dance and instagram. Stay consistent especially when it feels stagnant.

My experience may be anecdotal but I do full-time photo and video for a large university. Working in a corporate environment has provided me stability and benefits that other photographers and videographers could only dream of. Not only that, but I get to work 3 days a week from home and the work is very predictable in terms of deadlines and the busy times of the year. Corporate life may not be the most fulfilling in terms of personal impact, but if your goal is to be financially stable. I don't see the reason to look down upon others who settle for a corporate job.

Most people who have a 9-5 don't enjoy it either. But they HAVE TO in order to pay rent. Then it just becomes a lifestyle.
Honestly having a 9-5 to fund your automations, software, subscriptions, ads, or a team, is often underlooked.
If you have daddy's money, great. Don't go to 9-5. But some people HAVE TO

Hi Adam, first of all congratulations on all your hard work that's brought you to where you are now. I think I've been watching you for like 2 years and it's so cool to see all you've done :). This might be a very odd suggestion to you but have you ever tried Jesus, and no I'm not kidding. Regardless of whether you believe in a higher power or not, I would encourage you to pray for Him to be a part of your life and show you His truth. It might sound silly but if you are sincere, He'll do it. Everyday with Him (whether you are working a regular 9 to 5 or the coolest job in the world) will be an adventure in and of itself and trust me you'll never get bored. Just try it :), a lot of times we only turn to God when we experience something tragic but it doesn't have to be that way.

Fulfillment might be what you're missing. For some, working is a means to reach that fulfillment or their work is fulfilling in itself. If raising animals on a farm is fulfilling, then work towards that.

"i don't want to work a 9-5 my entire life" is the same energy as "im never drinking again" after a night out. Sounds great in theory, but not at all realistic haha
In all realness, the 9-5 is actually a privilege even though it doesnt feel like it. It pays decent but requires a lot of your time. Its just good enough to allow people to wallow around a bit unhappy but not so miserable that they actually make a jump and change their lives. My advice to you is to make the 9-5 rewarding. Do this by making it a game and focus on leveling up, i.e. promotions and climbing the ladder and hopping companies if need be. If you dont feel like your have a path/purpose in your job ofc youre going to feel miserable. Good luck Adam

Why should you be chained to a desk for the rest of your life limiting your options? Regardless of how you frame it, you've just advocated for a person to stay in their box and not look beyond. If I had done that - I wouldn't be where I am now. People need to break out, and they absolutely should. What they need to understand though is that it will require a lot of effort. Despite that, the opportunity TO break out has never been easier with the world being so much more interconnected now.
The statistics paint an interesting picture too, with indicators that the number of people becoming self employed/setting up their own gig is increasing. I'm a writer, I sell my books on Amazon. It took just over three years of hard graft before I gained some traction, but the rewards have been absolutely worth it. I can do what I want, go where I want and I am on course to paying off the last lump of my mortgage come October.
I turn 40 next February. Despite losing some 16 years to the 9 to 5 grind, breaking out was the best decision I ever made.

@@bobpage6597 Congratulations Bob! That is great and im happy to hear of your success. My commentary was more so directed at the average Joe who is vaguely unhappy with their 9-5 but doesnt know what to do instead. Id put you in the category as the drinker who wakes up after a night out and actually never drinks again :). That is to say, most people can recognize their slight discomfort but are unable to permanently change to get out of it. You did. The path I outlined to climb the latter is at least an easier path that reduces feeling miserable in your job and gives you a sense of control and purpose. But by all means, ones path can be outside of a 9-5 if you really want to go hard and risk it. But not everyone has that risk tolerance or conviction in their idea

@@bobpage6597 yeah for 16-19 year olds that think they're special that want to break out, they gotta go through the real-life experience of what a job actually is. Most of em just think they're already too good for a 9-5 and just jump straight into millionaire fastlane. Most 16-19 year olds think they'll succeed by the time they're 21. It's definitely possible. It's just unrealistic.

You sound very mature. I give you a tip. If you decide to jump ships voluntarily at any point in your career, which you should every 3-5 years, do not make a decision solely because management is bad. Most but not all managers are bad even though many do have good intentions. I will check back with you in 20 years. :-) Good luck.

That's why I never want to tie my fufillment to a job or materialistic items, but instead to my family, friends, and hobbies.
