If someone told me in the mid 80's that Chris Nilan and Jay Miller would be exchanging in a friendly manner in the future i wouldn't have believed it. They had the most fiery battles i ever saw. Great interview once again, i love this podcast.
Last week I am driving on I10 to El Paso and I listened to the Bourque interview. Absolutely a great story that I needed to hear. Now you interview Jay Miller. Every interview you and Tim do are absolutely top notch. Thank you both
I love the mutual respect with these guys. Loved Jay with the kings. At one moment in time, there was Jay Marty and Baumgartner at once. Thanks for the memories guys!
My wife and I were season ticket holders with another couple during that time. I HATED the Kings, but loved hockey, so we would go to the 20 games a year for five years. I always thought the best of the three was Bomber as he never seemed to lose. It was short-lived though when Bomber was traded to the Islanders.
I grew up with cousins loving hockey fights so I grew to love them too. One xmas my cousins got jerseys. My favorite fighters were Kordic and Miller. One of my cousins got a Kordic Leafs jersey, my other cousin got a Gord Donnelly Jets jersey and my aunt bought me, I shit you not, a Jay Miller Bruins jersey! My community club team was the Bruins so my cousins told my aunt to get me the jersey. I loved wearing my jersey but I had to explain to every single person who Jay Miller was cuz no one had a clue, even after I told them. I still have 5 or 6 VHS tapes full of old fights. What a time.

oh wow the great Jay Miller! A criminally underrated NHL enforcer and one of the best hockey fighters of all time. He and Knuckles had some epic fights as did Jay and the great Dave Brown. Miller fought and beat just about every great NHL enforcer of his era, which was probably the toughest ever. And these two here were two of the best and meanest ever. Jay had such great endurance like Marty McSorley did and could never be counted out of a fight. Excellent balance too. Great to see these two talking. What a joy it was to grow up watching these legends and other greats like Dave Brown, Bob Probert, Stu Grimson etc drop the gloves and fight each other and protect their teammates in real time. Boston was so tough too with no just Jay but Lyndon Byers and power forward Cam Neely.
Remember the Bruins Brought Jay up from the minors to fight Nilan every time Chris was on the ice . After 8 fights , the Canadians brought up Kordic to counter Jay . I never missed a game. Nilan was the Bruins arch enemy, and everybody loved to hate him. It was a sad day when Milbury acquired Nilan to play for Boston. I was nose to nose with him myself.
This is an epic podcast. Both were among the Top 10 fighters of their time and perhaps of all time. Much respect and it's so cool they have total respect for each other.
Love your podcast, Chris. I met you about 10 years ago at one of the Toe Blake golf tournaments - I played with Yvon Lambert. It was such a great event, and you and all the team members were terrific. Best wishes to you and Tim for a great continuing partnership.
I always felt Yvon was screwed. He was demoted when the NHL had a bias against guys around 30 or older and he had a fine year in Buffalo and then was sent down the next season to Rochester. Yvon could play and why he was sent down I'll never know? Then in the 1990's all the old guys hung around with all the expansion and the league going to an all checking NHL. If you were willing to check and focus on defense you could have a job forever! Guys like Kirk Muller sucked for years and yet kept a job as a checker. He was a shadow of his former self and yet kept a job for like 8 years being garbage and yet like 12 years before a Yvon Lambert was demoted when he was still a good player! BTW, Yvon Lambert could fight also!
Wow great exchange with Jay You 2 guys were part of my childhood Being from Québec i used to be à habs fan but with Ray Bourque the Bruins had a spécial place in my heart....it was à pleasure hearing some news from you guys. I grew up in the 80s on the East Coast of Canada as a big Habs fan, so I loved Knuckles of course. I'm currently nursing a bad back and have had lots of time on my hands. It's been so enjoyable for me to be listening to most of your episodes boys! The interviews are very down to earth, very personal and natural. I give both of you - Knuckles and Buster - real credit for providing such a great podcast. You guys are both such good listeners and you're both funny - that's a great combo. Also, you guys continue to dip into the mental health aspect of the human being and are providing a great tool that counters the woke ideology that is so pervasive in our culture, and without really trying to. Thanks boys. Oh, and to note: Sorry Knuckles. I watched that game 7 against Hartford and I couldn't track down your famous backcheck. You were actually in the box serving a coincidental minor when Peppy scored. Haha.
These interviews are pure gold. You guys are putting together a legendary catalog of shows. Every week I am just amazed what come out. I still remember the "you're f-ing dead" after Nilan suckered Paul Boutilier game. They were not kidding around in the Garden that night.
Wow, it’s amazing how paths cross and end up coming full circle! So proud and happy for you guys! Keep up the great work guys! This was another great listen, the stories are awesome. Keep them coming, can’t get enough!
This is priceless... we loved Jay.. hated Chris.. I love to see them hash out the old days... nobody could ever say they didn't have balls of steel. Chris got to play with the elite Habs players that I used to love seeing in Boston. God bless both of them!
Chris, these podcasts are really good, thanks. First one I saw was over an hour, and I thought no way I'll watch the whole thing. Couldn't turn it off. Thanks for taking the time to do this, and I loved your time in NY with the Rangers.
I love your podcasts I’m 68 in 3 weeks from out side Edmonton been watching hockey since the early 60s Chris your really good at your job interviewing it’s all honest and funny Tim is good also . One thing I can watch to the end each one usually .
I absolutely loved this Podcast... I laughed when Jay mentioned the Black & White TV with the Rabbit Ears Antenna and Tin Foil on them to improve the reception... Dad would have my 3 brothers & I forming the human chain holding hands with one of us holding the antenna, as dad would direct our positions... The Boston - Montreal rivalry was epic.... Only thing close was the Yankees - Red Sox.. There was a guy on Buffalo that Jay had some classic bouts with called Kevin MaGuire... Another that comes to mind was Gord Donnelly.
Loved jay miller, my brother and I taped every fight he had as a Bruin. Also nilan was tough and bruins Canadian games were the best. Saw it once at the garden and you didn’t disappoint. Thank god you were both around during the best hockey .
Absolutely love this. Being from Montreal, I lived for the Boston Montreal rivalry. The Miller vs Kordic fights were insane. You knew they would fight every game. In the '88 playoffs when Richer took a slash that broke his hand, The Habs brought up Steven Fletcher for some retaliation. The next game you knew there would be fireworks. Miller vs Kordic and Byers vs Fletcher fought at the same time. Even the TV hockey broadcast was ready for it, and showed both fights on a split screen. Fucking crazy. Great to see Jay and Chris Sharing memories and mutual respect.
Loved Jay Miller as well as Chris Nilan. Every time Miller was on the Ice Fred Cusick, Derek Sanderson and Dave Shea all said were gonna see something now. And the Beff stew was on!!

I could vision Brown participation with a sense of respect and a bit of humor. Miller on the other hand is still in post beat down trauma from all the punches he absorbed from Brown.
Golf caddied for these two legends at Nantucket Golf Club around 99/2000. They were guests of Brian McLaughlin who is mentioned on this pod. 2 absolute gentlemen and 4 of the funniest hours on a golf course in my life!! Cam Neely was also there and the drinks cart was refilled quite a few times. Jay was quiet reserved and quiet with a killer one liner while Knuckles never shut up and was just hilarious. Great times!!!
This was a great interview . As a die hard Habs fan I remember disliking Jay Miller just do to the jersey He wore although it sounds like he is a stand up guy as a player and as a player . Like how these guys became good pals . 👍👍
Great podcast !! Met Chris a few times. Landing pub, Poopsies and Pilgrim Arena. He was watching his son play and i was watching mine. 1990's Great Guy !!
I have not watched the show yet, but I predict the gloves will shortly end up on the floor ! Seriously, the prestige of the guests that come on this show, episode after episode, is amazing.
I am the same age as Miller & Nilan. When Nilan buttended Middleton I went crazy. I swear if I had been in the garden I would have went after Nilan. Lol
One of my closest friends growing up was John Cunniff's son so I was fortunate enough to go to a lot of Bruins games when he was Terry O'Reillys assistant coach. I remember we would stand up before the puck was dropped if Jay Miller was on the ice anticipating a fight shortly after the puck was dropped 😄
Hard agree. One is a product of his times. Seemed more authentic back then. More naive, more grounded, loyalty was a thing, stuff was low tech. People could take a ribbing, everybody laughed more, didn’t take stuff so personally, or carry a grudge so much. Now everything is a worry and people suffer no fools, can’t make a mistake and reinvent yourself or tell a stupid jokes. Plus things are so specialised now, no spontaneity.
Hey Chris...did you ever fight Jimmy Mann? I was 14, in October of 79, The Jets just came in the NHL. The upper decks were not open yet , in the old arena. I knew my hockey and I was a good player, This was a dream game. 4rth row from the ice with my buddy. opening faceoff , Tom McVie(Wpg sends out Hoyda and Jimmy Mann, Fred Creighton sends out John Wensink and O'Reilly). Long story short, what a fantastic game, opening faceoff both wingers went at it. Winnipeg erupted! It was our 1st win against an original 6 team. By the end the Jets beat a great Bruin team 3-2. Mann fought Wensink, Secord and Jonathan...his 1st year, lol . Those fights, that animosity, that was hockey. I was all about making it to the NHL. I didn't. So when I hear guys saying they only played 100 games or even 3 games, Hey you made it man! Great podcast!! Jimmy Mann had to show Fergy who drafted him over Lowe and Dale hunter. But Mann scored over 30 in the Q, and Fergy loved a fighter who could score!... That old Arena in Winnipeg it was loud when that team would win, fight and just play frickin hard. All my respect for all the fighters ever to play. There should be their own wing in the HHOF. They made so many great players, excellent players. More room...Maybe saved how many careers, yet now many suffer...went thru a lot of shit. Never back down was my motto, my Dad taught me, and I just loved the way the game WAS. You learned respect playing outdoor hockey at the local rink against guys 4 or 5 yrs older...if you start something, you knew...take care, thanks for You and Tim doing these!!!
In my opinion, Red was a professional sportswriter. He treated the game and the players with respect, unlike many commentators today, Love the podcast.
a cousin of mine was a huge John Kordik fan. She ran into him at a mall in Edmonton and they became friends. I got to meet him as well and he was such a nice guy off the ice, then the drugs and alcohol took over
I'm a Rangers fan since 1970 and my late Cousin Richie worked for the Rangers from 1965 to 78 and was in John Ferguson's book called Thunder and Lightning on 5 pages and Fergie called Richie his Best NY Pal and I loved Nicky and Chris and always said I wish Nick Fotiu played like Chris Nilan who was a warrior. Fotiu never fought after 1979 when he destroyed Holmgren and Wilson in Philly!
Great fighters both Jay and Chris. Interesting what Jay said about Kordic... What a sad story he was, but to me it looked like he had the best of Jay in their bouts
I remember the interview with Miller's parents, and his mother said she didn't like him fighting so much and Jay said that's his job, and his mother said ''and he does it very well'' Lol
Its unbelievable how many kids, American kids, especially from New England, were influenced to play from watching Bobby Orr in the early 70s. This directly coincided with the 1980 gold medal win and the influx of American players in the NHL
Love Jay. Got to meet him when I was a kid at the Tip a King event at Culver City ice rink. I don’t quite understand why he said that probert would throw a couple punches and then be done.
Chris I wish you would try to get Wayne Cashman on. I think that He has a beef against the Boston Bruins but I don't exactly know why and I wish you could find out
Oh man back in those days one time at the old forum 10 of us got together we got standing room tickets. So we stood outside the turnstyle at 6 pm until the gates opened . All of us ran as fast as we could sprinting upstairs two at a time. We found a spot along the metal wall and ten of us in a row stood up and watched that bruins vs Habs game. My buddy's were all bruins fan me and one other guy were Habs fans. They're yelling miller miller. Then the scraps started. Nilan took miller out what a fight.at the end of the game the Habs won I was drunk and over joyed . My buddy the bruins fan goes and tears down the sign stuck to the wall saying it's miller time and rips it in half ! Wow lifetime memory. Nilan ! Nilan !

I could vision Brown participation with a sense of respect and a bit of humor. Miller on the other hand is still in post beat down trauma from all the punches he absorbed from Brown.
Awesome interview--Jay is a cool guy. Love seeing fellow Massholes reminiscing. I'm north shore/merrimack valley so our rivalry is with Cape Cod.
Knuckles, so many need to join your podcast: Cashman, O'Reilly, Wensink, Jonathan, Byers, Kocer, ...
Brown, Stanley, hospodar, tocchet,
What a great episode! Really cool stories and all that you went through.
Great interview... Two warrior's. God Bless
Good guys .... thanks.....
Awesome podcast once again Chris
Golf caddied for these two legends at Nantucket Golf Club around 99/2000. They were guests of Brian McLaughlin who is mentioned on this pod. 2 absolute gentlemen and 4 of the funniest hours on a golf course in my life!! Cam Neely was also there and the drinks cart was refilled quite a few times. Jay was quiet reserved and quiet with a killer one liner while Knuckles never shut up and was just hilarious. Great times!!!
great interview,i remember his fights with kordic like it was yesterday
This was a great interview . As a die hard Habs fan I remember disliking Jay Miller just do to the jersey He wore although it sounds like he is a stand up guy as a player and as a player . Like how these guys became good pals . 👍👍
Nilan was from West Roxbury not Roxbury. Both are neighborhoods in the city of Boston but there are many differences between the two.
Great episode, “ thank God you did”
Legends
Great podcast !! Met Chris a few times. Landing pub, Poopsies and Pilgrim Arena. He was watching his son play and i was watching mine. 1990's Great Guy !!
32:47 "You're Up!" - almost spit my water across the room. lol
Best Jay Miller memory, Jay beating up on John Kordic, center ice Montreal Forum....What a beauty !!!
What???
@@softladkirkhe said jay beat up kordic at centre ice in the forum...
Good times
Jay never beat up Kordic. 😂
@@Bruins-vq5ey 8-2-2 Kordic jagoff.
@@mirandasalinas9412 ya, ok
I live in Brockton mass and cousins in Hyannis, this is great!!
Lol
I was there, there was an Ugly feeling in the Garden after that.
Another awesome podcast, nice job fellas.
Crazy to know how many guys from Boston play in the NHL
My dad has met both Jay and Chris on multiple occasions and said they are great guys.
My favorite fight of all time is Jay vs Kevin Maguire game 2 1988 Adams division semis...
These are great!
The song Miller referenced is "Nutty" by the Ventures.
This was amazing!!👍❤️🤠👍
Thanks John-thanks for listening
And people wonder why I love old time hockey and hare today's BS. the NHL has no people like this anymore. Bless you both old timers.
I don't even watch it anymore.
@@patrice5976 right on. I could sight a lot of examples. It's people not giving a fuck. It's my ass only. We just stop caring.
Both absolute Legends!
That was awesome guys!
Gotta pass this on to my brother in law (Hingham guy) he will enjoy watching big time!
Have a good Patty's day.
Not to good!
Wait wow James Whitey Bulger was Chris Milan’s father in law? This is crazy lol
In my opinion, Red was a professional sportswriter. He treated the game and the players with respect, unlike many commentators today, Love the podcast.
a cousin of mine was a huge John Kordik fan. She ran into him at a mall in Edmonton and they became friends. I got to meet him as well and he was such a nice guy off the ice, then the drugs and alcohol took over
Me to Im Huge John Kordic fan guy was one rugged dude and yes he had had his issue's to fuckin bad how it ended cool you got to meet him.
Yes, 8 games a year, hockey night in Canada.
West Roxbury baby.😂
Great fighters both Jay and Chris. Interesting what Jay said about Kordic... What a sad story he was, but to me it looked like he had the best of Jay in their bouts
38:00 bing bang … wtf we just set up a fishing trip !! 😂
I remember the interview with Miller's parents, and his mother said she didn't like him fighting so much and Jay said that's his job, and his mother said ''and he does it very well'' Lol
Jay did very well as Brown's personal practice punching bag.
Every tough guy in the league agreed with Mom
@@Bruins-vq5ey AHHHH 😢 YOU GOT MILLER'S MOM DOING THE BATTLEFIELD NOW... ❤
Nice to hear jay refer to owning Brown
@@Bruins-vq5ey Miller is still coughing up his chipped teeth since those whoopings Brown gave him.
Tommy Laidlaw told me Jay was a great teammate.
Just imagine Jay Miller in a Leafs jersey.. I always wanted to see that back in the day.
Great internview :)
this is epic
Its unbelievable how many kids, American kids, especially from New England, were influenced to play from watching Bobby Orr in the early 70s. This directly coincided with the 1980 gold medal win and the influx of American players in the NHL
Love Jay. Got to meet him when I was a kid at the Tip a King event at Culver City ice rink. I don’t quite understand why he said that probert would throw a couple punches and then be done.
Chris I wish you would try to get Wayne Cashman on. I think that He has a beef against the Boston Bruins but I don't exactly know why
and I wish you could find out
Because Sinden did not ask Cashman to coach.
Dave Huchison when he was with the Kings was vital to the team. Wish Jay would have reflected on his Kings years.
I was at that training camp....Jay ran everything that moved...
F- -ckyn awsome. Honesty and purity unmatched today!
Nilan ! Nilan !
If you think Nilan handled miller you were drunk
Your shut off. 😵🚫
you guys have a great podcast
Thank you for listening!
