    Clark Railworks is a very good outlet that can be trusted, and I've bought a few locos from them and been extremely pleased. They also offer a 6 month mechanical warranty. But as you found, their website needs some work.
    Not tried Hereford. I was lucky enough to drive 63601!
    Kernow offer some great prices. Just bought a Dapol 59 for £119.

    The Hattons database of models is going to be missed. I use it all the time to check if a model is DCC and learn which year tooling it has and which names were produced. I see you do the same twice in this video. Rails seldom list the DCC status and when the Hattons database dies it's going to be difficult to find out. Someone needs to continue the Hattons database!

    • @stephendavies6949
      @stephendavies6949 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yes. It is my "go-to" reference resource. Hope someone buys it. I'd be prepared to pay a small subscription charge to use it, provided it was kept up to date and developed further.

    • @Samstrainss
      @Samstrainss 9 месяцев назад +1

      Someone will probably archive it, or you can go request it be archived somewhere. It's entirely possible to keep it there somewhere for you and others to look at going forward

      @@stephendavies6949 This exactly what I wrote to Hattons, that I would be prepared to pay a small annual fee to access their database. It's such a good resourse especially with all the photos and every detail about the model- DCC- tender driven- split chassis etc. They replied that their website was expensive to maintain. I wrote to rails also and they didn't really want to discuss other websites and their databases.

    • @amp9930
      @amp9930 9 месяцев назад

      @@Samstrainss Really? who do you request to archive it? If this database is lost it will be very damaging to UK modelling as there is nothing else that compares. Type any model number into google and the Hattons database is top listing and has all the info and photos.

    I checked out Clark Railworks after you mentioned their second hand offerings on this video and picked myself up an LMS 3F DCC Sound Fitted running perfectly for £116 + shipping. Shipping to Australia was very reasonably priced and it arrived tonight, less than a week door to door by Royal Mail / Australia post. Can only praise their excellent service and will check out what they have available on a regular basis. As somebody else said, there are quite a few 'sold out' items listed, but I expect that since they are a relatively small outfit they don't perform a stock sweep on the web site more than once per week. My 3F was listed on the site as 'sold out' for about four days before it disappeared.
    Overall, I had a fantastic experience dealing with Clark Railworks and would heartily recommend them.

    Hi Jenny, you got stumped as I did on Ellis Clarke - if you click on the photo you get the quick view where as clicking on the models text gives the full blown description including the ability to see the exploded photos.

    Scograil in Ipswich for European models though they have some Kato UK things at very reasonable prices. I started buying Polish stock from them during a trip to Poland before Covid and haven’t stopped. A darn sight cheaper than Gaugemaster or Jadlam.

    Great Vid. Jen. I picked up some of those Hornby HAA MGR coal wagons from Kernow a couple of weeks ago. Once they are weathered up and seen from normal viewing distances will look very good. Plus the will run with the other 39 I already have!

    Thannks for the pointers to Hereford. Have not been there for a while, now they have some hidden gems. All these smaller model shops would benefit from access to the Hattons database. I really hope that is preserved somehow.

    Well, this was a well-timed upload, because I just had a parcel from Clark Railworks turn up in the post today. This time it was a Bachmann Class 47, she cost me a reasonable £104.17 and only took one week to get from Skipton all the way down to New Zealand.
    I think the best deal I got from CRW was a Hornby Class 56 in EWS colours. She only cost me £61.67, but she's heavily weathered and still in good condition.

    Also worth mentioning. You can always pick up bargains from some of the sales stores for the locomotive trusts or various other rolling stock trusts sometimes found at preserved railways. The majority of their items tend to be pretty old locomotives, rolling stock, buildings and accessories. But for those beginning in the hobby they are ideal items to buy. The Erlestoke Manor Fund at the Severn Valley Railway have a excellent shop at Bewdley and they will test the locomotives prior to your commitment to purchase. I have picked up quite a few items from them, mostly rolling stock like wagons or coaches. Plus the money you spend goes into helping restore locomotives in their ownership.

      Yeah, I'm in Tasmania (pop 540,000) and getting anything good is a struggle. I visited family in UK in 2022 and 2023 and basically quadrupled my stock of BR mineral wagons and box vans with a single trip to a heritage railway shop. Had to post them back to myself the day before I flew. Great value and good to support the railway too.

    Forgot to say thanks for doing the research.
    The hobby is alive and well: just look at the viewing figures for channels such as yours: the next generation model railway clubs! RUclips & other social media outlets have expanded the hobby, hence the profusion of manufacturers and models that we're seeing/benefitting from. Physical clubs may be decline, but their demise is a long way off. It is a happy co-existence between both the virtual and the physical.
    PS: there are still bargains to be had on eBay. It just takes a little knowledge and patience to find them, as these days ebay will ensure a refund if your purchase is not "as advertised".
    One very good ebay seller is Mr Energiser.

    It's interesting to see how many of these are mainline operating, tender steam locos. They are out there!
    ... Although the possibility of modelling a 1970s exchange siding, with something like the class 25 and a Janus or even the NCB Austerity and an assortment of dirty coal wagons is definitely an interesting scene.
    Now to write out "I will not get distracted from the main layout by building an exhibition layout" a hundred times...
