From the biography book of Guy Sajer ' THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER '. Story of young Frenchman who serve in the famous Gross Deuthcsland Division during WW2.
Do yourself a big favor and purchase this as an audio book on Audible. It is one of the best accounts of a German soldier out there although there are better. His story, as those of all the German soldiers, is mesmerizing. Guy’s father was French, but his mother was German. I notice there is some confusion about his ethnicity just to clear that up.
The absolute best book ever written on the eastern front is - The Black March, by Peter Nueman. It's super rare, I think it's possible to order it, but there's nothing on it online, Google, yt,
My grandad was a German from the fortress küstrin, hopeing to find out who he is soon,he never spoke about the war he lost his whole family on the oder front also on the easten front.

This story of a young French boy enlisted in the German army to fight in the Soviet Union, read by someone possibly from a state South of the Mason-Dixon line, is quite puzzling to a French listener.
if you ever feel sorry for yourself, just read some first-hand accounts of fighting on the eastern front. "the forgotten soldier", "sniper on the eastern front", and "in deadly combat" all good choices. puts shit in perspective real quick.

That is a perspective that is rarely given. Thank you for sharing it.
My pleasure!

That was good. Different but another valuable perspective
I read the book and quite a fair bit was inconsistent, leading to suspicions, but generally he did serve there in the Gross Deutschland div.
What’s the context to this?
It’s about two children playing paddie cake in an open field.
The context LOL?? War on the Eastern Front. Do I need to say more?
