  • For this edition of Abandoned Iceland we sent the Grapevine's Waterfall Enthusiast Division (aka Poppy Askham and Art Bicnick) to Glymur, 198m tall waterfall in Iceland. Awe-inspiring views, amazing birdlife and some dicey river crossings - just a standard day for an Icelandic hiker.

Thanks for the guided trip Poppy - and keep practicing the Icelandic, it gives the rest of us hope that it can be picked up by non-Icelanders!

What a great cave for a neolithic group that could've made, plenty of ventilation, great view, meditative ambiance with background sounds to match and to top it all off, RUNNING WATER! what more does anyone need? . . . . . . .? . . . . . . OK so it's BYO food! 🤐
Spectacular views, what a great series this is altho I highly recommend all of the Reykjavik Grapevines' newscasts and magazine productions, so ppl. check them all out. ✈ 🏎 🛴 👀
These landscapes! I can see why Floki (Vikings series) saw that it was the land of the gods!
Oh NO Poppy! L👀KS like they forgot to mention that the water is freezing and the rock are slippery! . . . . sorry 'bout that! 🥴

Awesome footage & epic musical accompaniment, however the most spine tingling/dangerous part of the hike was when the host took a drink from the river. Aren’t there giardia (giardiasis) parasites in Icelandic water like there are everywhere else? The nasty smell of the cliff dwelling birds was mentioned. Their dung gets in the river no doubt.

Biting my nails while Poppy was sitting on that rock wall. It's probably safer than it looks, it would HAVE to be, but man those look like dangerous plummets.

Am I right in thinking the log part of that river crossing is removed at the end of the summer time/reasonable hiking weather?

Yes, you are right. The better side of the waterfall is accessible in summer only.

    So green and beautiful!
I have a question about accessibility. So sorry, I know that's boring.
I suppose it is not recommended for someone with partial blindness to do these hikes alone, am I right? I see a lot of improvised bridges throughout this series.
So, I would need a travel buddy for the future if I ever go there again.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

Perhaps it's just a matter of time? Iceland's turistic infrastructure is constantly being improved, and there is already plenty of places fully accessible, even on your own. However, Glymur is not yet among them, unless you're not affraid of rivers, like Poppy ;)

@@votarbicnick9456 thank you. I have been to Iceland before and yes, plenty of accessible spots. I just see from the videos that the hikes themselves have some tricky spots. I'm not afraid of anything, death isn't a concern to me, we're all going there someday. It's just that I'm aware of how Icelandic nature is, and it's not always the safest. So if I was crazy enough to try going on my own someday...it's better for me to know where I can and can't go. :)

Let me criticize Iceland for not making Glymur more accesable to those with disabilities or limited mobility. To think of a major tourist attraction in the 21st century with a log bridge is crazy. I visited Iceland in 2019 and want to again in 2021 but at 68 y/o and having suffered a previous stroke, there is no way I'm going to cross a log bridge. The opportunities for those with less mobility than I are going to be non existent at Glymur. Come on Iceland, help the disabled.
