  • Mercedes' 2023 F1 car has been revealed and it's gone back to a black livery like it did in 2020 and '21, after reverting to silver in 2022. But there's a different reason for bringing the black livery back this time, and it's all about car performance...

This works very well thematically for merchedes too! The original silver cars they raced way back in the day where silver for the exact same reasons these cars are carbon!
They stripped down the paint to the bare aluminium to save weight therefore making the cars silver (aluminium)

So what I personally think is that there should be a minimum amount of weight via paint to prevent black cars all over the grid, this would also encourage teams to have nice and colorful liveries and would probably boost sales😊

It can be seen also the other way around if you think about it: what if they can't shed weight anywhere else, so they "had" to leave the car more unpainted to try and save is that department. Yes, is a less probable hypothesis, but still possible IMO

It really goes to show just how crazy the performance of these cars are and the measures they have to take when trying to make improvements to these marvelous machines when we're talking about saving weight in the GRAMS. Just recently started watching F1, and introduced it at the same time to my 12 and 8 yr old and my wife, and every one of us really loves the sport! My 8 yr old daughter getting into it was really what surprised me, but it just goes to show how awesome a sport f1 really is! I can't wait till I can afford to take them all to our first live event at either the Texas or Las Vegas tracks, I want to make a whole thing of it and attend the qualifying rounds as well!!

This is also a nod to German heritage in racing, they always left their cars unpainted to save weight while everyone else was using their own color. This is ALSO why Merc gets called the silver arrow because that’s what they’d call them back in the day because of the color of the bare aluminum.

The FIA should not include paint in the total weight of the car. Not sure how they would regulate that, but it would allows more cars to have fun colors once more.
