This is one of the best tutorials I have seen for AE! You turned all those jpegs into animations and added all these simple effects to create this beautiful animation! Bravo!
Thank you for your in-depth tutorial...Your video lasted 25mins and it took me 7hours to reproduce! It was my first time ever launching After Effects...What a powerful program! Well worth the long day in front of my laptop
hi. this is a very clever workaround but i got stuck and couldn't get it to work. would you still use this same technique today or do you think there's an easier way? i'm trying to add a 3D helmet to a 3D tracked head, so basically the same scenario as you have here. thank you!
I Used the build mask tracker, with its new Face-Tracking option that was added in the last versions of After Effects. just right click the mask, select the track option and from the track window select the right face track option as seen in the tutorial and you're good to go. Cheers!
Hey man, awesome tutorial. Is there a way I can take this data and convert it to camera movement, take it into maya and then render a helmet and bring that comp and match the render movement with the head in after effects? Thanks!
I have question, so I have a clip and there are 3 HUD shots. In the first shot, after I tracked face, the set rest pose and the extract and copy face measurements option appeared under the track menu, but when I tracked again for other clips, it didn't give me the option
amazing thanks a lot, yours is the only tut for this effect that is easy to follow. Question: on 6:26 why is it necessary to press shift? Also at 6:21 when adding the grid on the null which is the layer on top, my composition gets all distorted, the grid only covers the left half of the canvas and the face also moves there. Only when I move the grid layer to the bottom of the comp, then it works like yours but then the face is on top, not under the grid. Any help with that? Actually it happens the same when I add a widget on top of the face, same distortion happens. Only when I make the face layer 3d the problem disappears. Do you know why this might be?
great tutorial but HUD should be curved in my opinion; what would be the best way to achieve a curved-glass visor effect? or did you make it curved and i missed it?
You can achieve cylindrical curvature with the Ray-trace/C4D 3d engines inside of after effects, or Element 3D (which can create spherical curvature as well) and still use this technique with the null attachment. Cheers!
Hi! Thanks for the video, it's really instructive ! But I can't seem to make work the null object linked to the nose tip. It's never centered on the nose, and if I center it via the anchor point, it moves way too much around the real center. Do you have any idea ?
I have a problem : I tracked the two eyes, created a null object, targeted the tracking motion to the null, inserted an hud image, put them in 3D and parent the hud to the null. When moving in the timeline, the null object and the hud don't fix ! When I release 3D to the null, only the null layer fix. Finally, when I release 3D from null and hud, the two layers fix. But I would like to rotate the hud : \ Please help !
Vdodna, Man I tried to follow your tutorial. Unfortunately. When I am linking the nose null to the nose tip position of the video. It goes to a very different position on left and I am unable to change it. PLEASE HELP
Nice work!. The face is yellow and blue before the gadgets appears. just a little observation. thanks for sharing this tutorial. and i guess that the face tracking is a new effect for after effects CC an up.
Thanks, good one but I've got a problem; when i add the Hud Element.jpg and change it to 3d the blending mode is gone and i can't change it from normal to Add.
I have a problem. I'm using After Effects CC 2017 and I have the detailed face tracking thing on but Extract & Copy Face Measurements still isn't available. A little help please?
This is awesome! I ask my daughter to let me film her beautiful face :) and she did, but I realize that I have After Effects CS5 :'( Is there any possibility to make this in some other way?
Sure! even the regular AE tracking can replace the new face tracking feature, as long as you get position+rotation of any point of your daughter's face, it will work. good luck!

VDODNA I forgot to ask this ! when you track the video are you using any track plugin because I couldn't understand well that step ! 😀
I Used the build mask tracker, with its new Face-Tracking option that was added in the last versions of After Effects. just right click the mask, select the track option and from the track window select the right face track option as seen in the tutorial and you're good to go. Cheers!
Alright, mustache check, goatee check, time to be Ironman.

While you are iron man can you also stop on the way and bring half of the population back to life?

The world doesn't revolve around English. All is good as long as the message gets across. ❤
very nice tutoial, easy to learn
Amazing high class tutorial
Does it really need to shoot in green screen for any type of UI&HUD VFX??
Very impressive tutorial! And I think it will be more cool if you use the cc sphere instead of using a card.
Sounds good! share your CC Sphere result with us

+Anfray Lapeyre I'm guessing that the head null, which acts as a pivot, is too close. Let us know if that was the issue
Very Nice Thank you so much . Very cool

PLEASE how did u do that effect in 0:27 ?? i need to know the technique for my HUD video to put an element around my head!

It's actually on the same principle. but this time you need to roto the head for it to obscure the stars behind. you know where to send the results!
Very cool, thanks!
Thanks!

Make sure followed every step of the tutorial, try to reverse the link order or rotating the nose null in 180 degrees on the Y axis
My 3d object doesn't get 3d movement. It just get translation and scale
but I can't make it get 3d rotation. do you know what am I doing wrong
guys?
I don't have an option for Extract & Copy Face Measurements
my nose null object position not same as my nose. but i linked them together as you show
Nice work!. The face is yellow and blue before the gadgets appears. just a little observation. thanks for sharing this tutorial. and i guess that the face tracking is a new effect for after effects CC an up.
+Cesar H lopez S thanks! Duly noted, and yes the advance face tracking is a relatively new feature of the last versions.
Nice Tutorial
This is after effect cc or cs6,, and 2016 version ??
great job. love the tutorial!!
+Gadget nut cheers!
Thank you Professor!
What software are you using? Sorry, I'm ignorant...
Adobe After Effects, download a trial and play with it!
Thanks, good one but I've got a problem; when i add the Hud Element.jpg and change it to 3d the blending mode is gone and i can't change it from normal to Add.
If you are referring to the Nested comp hud, try to do it to the layers inside that comp.
Awesome video
Sir I am not getting that track mask option in my self shooted video in after effect cs6
I have a problem. I'm using After Effects CC 2017 and I have the detailed face tracking thing on but Extract & Copy Face Measurements still isn't available. A little help please?
Same problem here. Mine's grayed out.
Gotta set the rest pose first for that to not be grayed out.
Yeah, i had the same problem, i was messing around with the dock. just do this imgur.com/mrsnAA5

Yup! I figured out by myself lol and I made my video project and it's look awesome :) Thank you so much for all your tutorials
+StarClown Great! Share the result or it didn't happen!
When I pick whip the position of the null object to the nose tip It is popping over to his right cheek. Anyone know what I’m screwing up here?
fantastic! thank you
cheers!
I'm speachless!
could you make a tutorial with making ironman HUD's instead of downloading it from the web?
My thanks for you man!!
