Hi RCNetwork, I've recently been looking into airplane and multi-rotor brushless motors, and I was wondering if they would be able to work with the set screw pinion gears that you show in the video (as they don't have a 'D' shape shaft). Thank you.

I just went from a 27 turn brushes motor to a 10.5 turn brushless motor, do I need to change the size of the gears or anything? Dumb question I’m really new to this

Got a question, Hope you respond. I replaced my Pinion and I tightend it all the way down where you could not move forward or backwards, You could only move it with the gearing to side to side. I took it out for a test drive and got everything tuned up to what I wanted it to be, The Pinion gear just keeps coming lose and flying off. Do I need to glue it? Or what do I need to do ? Thanks
burnt 650r I know what you mean. Yes....kind of a “bounce” or “spring” as you check it after setting the mesh by rocking it back & forth. Hope this helps (and makes sense...a little hard to explain!).
The wires should have come with the ESC- I would use those, they're pretty decent. As for bullet connectors, I buy in bulk off of ebay...make sure they're a well known brand like Maclan (That's what I use) for the battery terminals...if you're connecting the motor to the ESC - any 4mm bullet will work

So I'm really thinking about getting into this I am fairly mechanically inclined... when I lack in mechanical ability I make up for in common sense but it looks very intimidating LOL I definitely am looking at Traxxas Stampede 4x4 vxl tsm, which I realize is skill level 2 but I have quite a bit of experience as a kid and teenager just not much as an adult but I do have a lot more respect for mechanical devices that I did as a kid LOL. How complicated are these really to work on? I don't plan on working on it right out of the box other than to change out the pinion gear and then of course I'll probably purchase the recommended charging station I saw...
You'll be fine. All you'll need is common sense, the ability to read the manual and some basic RC tools - 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm hex wrenches and a 5.5mm/7.0mm nut driver
Ok, I am def going to go with the RTR box, that way I can replace and upgrade things as I go, may be a tad more expensive in the long run and less practical, BUT I think it would be easier to learn that way? Thoughts?
CD Shavin' Murphy RTR’s are a perfect learning tool - they work from the start and get you some instant gratification. Like you said, you can start upgrading as you go and when you buy for example higher quality electronics, they can be easily transferred to a newer vehicle down the line.
Make sure you're setting the grub screw on the "D" side of the motor shaft...use loctite and wait 24 hours before driving. Be sure you're gear mesh is good as well
I used to use printer paper, but my full-scale mechanic brother told me to try a folded sales reciept and haven't looked back yet. Super close but not tight

@@doylecholesterole1927 most RC’s have a metal (steel or aluminum) pinion and a plastic Spur gear. The idea is if there is a failure point, a $4 plastic spur gear is better than a $80 transmission or a $100 motor. Even if you’re running a steel spur and hardened steel pinion, no grease is recommended.
Steve S with all respect Steve....that never works, especially with finer pitched gears. The best way is the method I've shown. Gear mesh is crucial to a great running RC and keep any unneeded load on the electrics.
It works great for me. I haven't stripped a gear in years. For the finer gears I use a thinner piece of paper like a receipt. As long as you hear that little click
Steve S you can use paper to set the mesh but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check the clicking sound after. Paper is soft and you can easily set the mesh incorrectly if you don't apply enough pressure or apply too much.
Jason Cioffi obviously u should check to make sure the mesh isn't too tight or loose after setting it. Sometimes there is more than one way to solve a problem. To say "that never works," is very inaccurate.
"that never works" is way of saying I wouldn't trust a system that involves chance with in this case a $250 RC, let alone a $1,000 RC. I don't want to give advice that involves chance and saying "just shove a piece of paper in between the gears and you're good." In your case, you said "perfect every time" That is very inaccurate, Steve

They might.....you can always Dremel the shaft to a "D" shape

Thanks for the video. At the end you spin the spur gear to look for tight spots. What would cause that and how do you fix it?
If the spur gear is out of round....there could be tighter spots on the spur/pinion mesh

Yes, use thread lock on the little grub screw and let it dry for a few hours before use

D.P.T. I was hoping that the bounce was normal. At first I was concerned. Then thought it might just be caused by the magnets in the motor.

You should never grease the spur/pinion on RC's. It just attracts dirt/dust and will kill your RC

It should easily come off....I've used a flathead screwdriver before to pry it off the shaft...but be careful

I really hope my pinion hear keeps on falling off because i did not screw it on right, I’m so confused on why my pinion keeps on falling off?

I just can't use the paper method...it's unreliable and takes more time....the method I use works and hasn't failed
I can't do it purely by eye and hand. But folded receipt paper holds up a lot better than printed paper for some reason
I noticed your pinions aren't greased. Is that ok?
You shouldn’t grease pinions, it will just collect dirt and grime whether it’s open or in a case.

Do I have to add loctite?
Yes, you should always clean the set screw and add loctite to it to prevent the pinion from coming loose

I have done everything on the book to keep my pinion gear on my motor but it goes flying

Tiny pinion gear there heheh! I usually use huge 64pitch 50+t pinion gears and tiny spurs
