    What do we learn from this video? In a dance/indie-rock track you want to control your low-lows and you want to have your guitars a little more on-on. Yes, those are the professional terms.
    Great job Warren, really cool to see how you mixed this. I like this track a lot.

    Warren,
    If you are conserned with, say, snare bleed on the kick producing unwanted reverb, I have had some luck with an alternate method. It is to use strip silence remove snare bleed from the kick mic (and vice versa for the snare mic). It can remove as many snare hits as possible before it starts to remove the weaker kick hits. The few snare hits left can be edited out. Then consolidate the entire kick track before any clip gets accidently moved. This can help preserve the dynamics of the kick performance.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi John D thanks for that tip! I usually leave it in, I enjoy it, however I have mixed songs where the snare is far too compressed and the kick is bleeding in so I think this could be a good trick for that! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      +Produce Like A Pro Great video and song. There are somethings i didnt quite understand though. In this example, why go to the lenght of panning the verb for each L-R guitar when you put a reverb one on each in the end? Wouldnt that be equal to just putting a stereo reverb across a sub guitar channel? I assume the reverbs on each channel are mono?

    Little trick I use on side-chaining a compressor. Instead of tying it to a bass kick, I'll use a short muted wood click, that way I find it a little easier to control the "pump" with the compressor.

    "...I use Logic a lot for keys.. It's dumb and easy to use..." LOL! Never heard it called dumb before. Mixed my first album entirely ITB in Logic. That probably explains a lot then :) Loving some of your little tricks like the synth drops and explosions. I'll definitely be nicking some of those ideas. Similar to your tape distortion on vox the trick I've used to add some trashy excitement is to send a copy of the vox through an amp sim mixed in below the lead. Keep them coming, and thanks!

    Hi warren, I was wondering if you can create a video on production, specifically on the creation of a song from start to finish; chord changes or melody changes in each section of an "Intro," "Verses," "Pre Chorus," "B-Section/Bridge," "Breakdowns," "Outros," etc. I want to see how you create a song from the beginning till the end of a session.

    Hi Warren. Finally got to watch this video today. Very interesting stuff going on there. Love the chorus in this tune, great hook! I don't think I've heard anyone use "Get your Rocks Off" before lol. Love it!
    I must ask though, how long from start to finish would a song like this take you? I can tell you're very proficient with your DAW and the tools you use, however, after you have the raw tracks recorded, and you start with all your Melodyne stuff, and those little reverse items etc, how much time would you normally spend on that sort of stuff (in general of course, using this song as a reference)
    I use a Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40, with an additional 8 channel ADAT which gives me 16 full I/O. Nice piece of gear! I'm looking later (once I get my new room finished) at perhaps adding another Sapphire Pro 40 (you can chain two together to behave like one interface in your DAW) and could have a total of 32 I/O with another ADAT expansion. I want to add a reasonable price console at that stage, but might hit you up for some wiring ideas to get it from the DAW to the mixer and back to the DAW.
    Thanks again Warren, keep up the great work! PS: How do you find the time to work on mixing while answering these posts! Cheers! Danny.

      Hi Danny MacNevin thanks for the great question! I wrote this song with the singer, so including the writing, recording and mixing it was probably around 2 days work total. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    13.25 .. when you say that you add the reverb to the sample snare channel only to avoid bleed into the reverb form the main snare mice ... would another technique be to gate the first half second or so of the real snare into a reverb channel? That way you'd get the dynamics of the real drum too.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

      Hi +Terry Doyle Definitely! That would work as well! Personally I still like the cleaner sample feeding the snare, but I will also send from the live snare at times. For instance I'm mixing Ace Frehley's new album at the moment and I'm sending a little verb from the love snare as we aren't using any samples on the drums at all! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    As usual a marvellous video! Very useful in this evergoing process in learning to record and mix. I do have a little suggestion in a coming video: I would be super interested in hearing you talk about the room, damping etc.. I work in a proper rehearsal room, not so much damping and I don´t have a control room either.. So it would be lovely indeed to get your thoughts and experience in for example what you can do to make the recording room better for recording. You know I love mixing and useing plug-ins, but I think that a as good as it get´s kind of room will make the mixing part a bit easier. Or am I totally wrong here? :)
    Hope you doing marvellously well Warren, and again thanks for a lovely video! All the best from Sweden. / JP

      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi Johan Persson in Sweden! Thanks for the great question! I would have to know more abut your room. If it's really just a square box then putting furniture in and breaking up standing waves would be the first thing I'd do. Bass traps in the corners would be next for me. Let me know a little more! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      Hi Warren! Thanks for your answer, l really appreciate it! I didn't mean my own room, more in general.. But ok, It's a pretty much standard room, 15-18 m2. Built in an old factory building. Very light with dampening, so l'll never have to use reverb on my recordings.. it sounds like a small church acctually! :)
      I'm thinking of that l might build some movable walls to place around the drumkit, but l don't know if It's worth it really.. Hope you'll have a marvellous day and thanks ever so much for taken your time and read and reply to my comment! Cheers W!

    Hi Warren! hope you had a nice weekend! I just noticed that on the L2 on your Drum Bus you kept the IDR section on. Is there a specific reason why? • @mimamakim
      @mimamakim 8 лет назад

      +Produce Like A Pro Hi I have another question regarding your "drum sub". Im not that familiar with pro tools, but I assume this "channel" is whats called a group channel in logic, so its not an aux, right where you are bussing the drums to, as you would reverb for instance? was just a bit confused watching it because you were talking about the MV2 as a parallel compressor, but usually a parallel compressor is inserted on an aux unless you just double the track and slam it on there as an insert of course. So just wanted to double check. Also the L2 that comes after slams it pretty hard, and so it seems like its being used instead of an SSL G compressor to glue it together, correct? Thanks Warren!!!

    Hi Warren. Please keep 'em coming. learning some cool tricks and ideas. i have a question about the MV2. this plugin automatically adds dither. are you concerned about that at all? if you use it multiple times and with compression, its possible to build up low level noise.

    Hi Warren, why is it that you use the Waves plugins, over the stock ones? Seems like you always use them, when it seems that the stock ones can do the same job? Is it the sound of them, or just out of habit?
    Thanks! :)

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад +1

      Hi llJaack thanks for the great question! I use stock plug ins a lot, the Avid Reverb is great for plate reverb, the delays I use a lot as well. My other favourites are McDSP plugins, their Analog Channel sounds wonderful! The Waves plugins are great for more surgical EQs and the MV2 is the best all in one parallel compressor, however I love the McDSP EQs for broad strokes. I hope that helps! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    I have to say this video has so many great little tips it gets a "10."
    Question for you Capt marvellous.
    At about 24:00-24:10 of this video you touch (again) on trimming the level between plugins. I believe you had two compressors inserted and then trimmed the output slightly.
    Couldn't you do that with the output/makeup gain of the plugins? Or would that affect the sound of the plugins? (Not very familiar with those specifically yet.)
    Gain staging and level management at various points is something I have been studying closely lately and would like to hear more from you on this.

    • @Producelikeapro

    Hey Warren.. great stuff. Question: are you concerned about any "activity below your V shape stereo image" or otherwise known as the "anti-phase", when using so many channels hard-panned LF and RT and all the other 'phase shifting' effects you show on this video, etc..? I always have a PAZ Stereo FEQ Analyzer on my Master bus.. that allows me to pay attention to not only the frequencies but also the stereo image.. And I always get concerned when I see activity down there (anti-phase activity, that is).. Should I be concerned as much about that? Also, on that realm of things, is it OK to hard-pan LF and RT your drums OH's? or am I better off to go light on the left and right panning on those? .. Thanks again! Cheers

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад +1

      Hi +david diaz Great question!! I use this effect extremely low and definitely pay close attention to how it sounds, that's really my main concern! Use very low to widen, but make to check how it sounds, not how it looks! I know there are a lot of videos with visual help placed above how things actually sound. But I believe if you use this very highly you will get a great benefit from it! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Great song and video Warren ! I noticed something funny, the first part of your glockenspiel gimmick at 30:37 sounds very close to the one I created in the bridge section of my mix for the PLAP Warm song contest (check Tom Scott Mix at 2:22 and let me know !!!)... ;-) As a matter of fact I think it's in the same key !! :)) As for the MV2 plugin, I always found it makes things sound harsh a bit or is it just me ? And as for the Addictive snares, I find there is a lack of round robin from the software but again it's maybe just me ! :) Anyway thank you for this video again, loved it ! :) I love how you process your drums too !! Very smart !! :) Cheers !

    Just wondering how you got the stereo effect with one guitar right and the reverb on the left, and the other vice versa. Specifically, how you got just the reverberation from each one on its own and panned it differently if that makes sense. Can you do this with pretty much any reverb plugin? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm still fairly new to this haha

      Hi James Fearon Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Regarding the snare sample used to trigger the reverb, is the raw sample turned down so only the reverb is heard? Also, what's your process for writing vocal melodies? Do you just sing them or do you play them on an instrument to convey idea to the singer? Thanks so much!!

      Hi Tim McEneany thanks for the fantastic questions! I do both with the snare that I use to trigger the verb. I have occasionally created a snare just for verb! If I wanted a huge ambient snare and just wanted to hear the verb I would do that. But usually the snare sample is part of the drum sound and I use it to trigger the verb as well. I always sing the vocal melodies to the artist when writing, but occasionally I will play a line for them to follow. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Hi Warren hope your doing marvoulously well? Just wondering do you use pro tools HD ? Or just the regular, I currently use Logic Pro x, and have been for several years , but I am thinking of maybe having a look at pro tools for mixing etc, but not sure which version would suit my needs and pocket best, regards Steve

    Thank's Warren! Just wonder...Macbooks tends to have wrong balance in the stereo field. Right channel have more gain. It's, from what I've read, a design fault. I can hear it on all 3 macbooks I've owned the last 6 years. Did you notice this as well and if so did do any balance to compensate? Thank's!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi Peter Martinsson thanks for the comment! Yes there is a design flaw with the internal speakers balance. However I don't use the Macbook Pro's speakers that often, I might use them for a short while to double check my mix, but I don't mix through them. I am normally monitoring through headphones or small powered speakers from the IO. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    Another great video! I have a question regarding your laptop. I am ready to replace my pc laptop and migrate to Mac . I've been looking at the MacBook Pro 15. Do you use the upgraded graphics card in your Mac or just the standard ? I plan on maxing the ram to 16g, and going with the 2.5ghz cpu. I do plan on using plugins and some midi instruments in my workflow.

    Hey there I got a question with all of those backing vox you're compressing them on their individual channel right? But are you also sending them to an aux to eq and process them or not? And what is your fader volume you're sending to an aux if you're sending them to an aux?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi Nathan Brown thanks for the great question! Yes I may individually compress things then group compress and/eq them, it would depend on how much I want to contain them. I don't do things the same way each time.

    It's good songs throughout, often with a grit and a drive and the kick sounds fine for that. You use Melodyne too, that is my speciality. I know it back to front and do a lot that Celemony isn't aware of is possible. I've used Studio and Editor for a good 6 years. Any problems, hit me with the file. Ex. putting a female stem a fifth under the lead has to be done a certain way since it will need a natural gender-bender and the formant tool doesn't really cope with that but it can be done. Good track and interesting video.

    great video/ just a few questions On the lead vocal.. i noticed you still were using the detuned tracks along with the lead during the verse ... do you keep those the same levels with the verse and chorus or did you make those detuned vocals more prominent in the chorus...so with the stereo width trick with the synth... What i have done before to kinda push it down in the middle is to run it in M/S which I have used the Puig Fairchild 670 from waves and compressed the mids down more to kind of sit it behind the center tracks. Would that be an ok thing to do also or would a stereo width plugin work better? thanks again... i love these types of videos where it shows everything working together... thanks again...

      Hi Tim Adams great question! I push up the vocal thickening tracks during the choruses and bring it down when the music is less dense. I'm hit and miss with M/S personally messing with the Polarity makes me dizzy! haha. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      also when i pan something should i make sure there's no super low frequencies in it? I heard before that generally you want sub frequencies or anything below 80 roughly to be mono down the center. any truth to it?

    Warren, is it important to "tune" your drums to the key of the song? And if so do you have any videos on that?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 лет назад

      Hi +Jeff Smith That's a fantastic question! When I worked with Don Smith he would have the snare tuned to the key of the song! It was fantastic! However when Tom Lord Alge mixed it he put on his snare sample so we didn't hear the tuning! So with that experience in mind I now tune the drums when I know that it's going to make a difference with the song! When it's something very organic!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад

      Hi Kshitij Bhargava thanks for the great comment! I would strongly suggest doing what sounds the best, always best to do that! Music does many things to the listener, it can be an amazing emotional journey, it can inspire, we are truly blessed to be able to make it! As my old friend Jack Douglas says be wary of experts, the best music has always been made by amateurs! There's always a 'right way' to do it and then there's what sounds best! I would always go with what sounds the best! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
