Yes! It was so nice to hear him sing. Sometimes I wish that, as amazing as he is as a beatboxer, someone else did percussion so that we would hear him sing more often. Darn you Scott Porter!

One of the tenets of music video creation, especially in a capella, where the music isn't there to hide or cover anything, these guys really sing the song, out loud, just as they do in the studio. It's the only way they can do group long shots completely in sync. So they're definitely singing it for real, we just get the studio recording audio instead. It's important to know that, because it explains what we see in Geoff's singing at the beginning. His palette is pulled back, and his mouth is tighter than singing full out with an open mouth. He's hitting the notes, but he's holding back on the inflection. That softer way of singing the opening seems to be reflected pretty well in what we see. I don't think he's lip syncing, it just appears a little awkward if you're used to seeing Geoff really sing full out most of the time. What he does here stylistically actually reminds me of how Tim Foust sings his bass (more understated), when he and Tim generally sing their bass very differently.
I could be completely wrong about this video, of course, but having sung in videos before, it never looks right if you lip sync, especially if there's no instruments. You HAVE to sing it for real, exactly how you always sing it, no holding back, it's the only way the video looks realistic, as if it was filmed live. And doing that actually makes it easier to edit individual cuts (i.e. switch from group shot to individual shot) to cover a mistake.
This is a great song, and a fantastic cover. You're right about Haley Reinhart's version too, one of the best out there. Pentatonix's cover is beautiful too, a different tone than most covers, VERY understated. I enjoy your analyses, people like you can really appreciate what goes into this art, and that makes the videos very enjoyable. Good stuff.

Starting with Geoff also pulls the listener in more than just starting mid-range and Eli and J-None do a fantastic job handling the tenor-midrange. For me, it's lovely, hearing this at a slower pace. It seems to me, most times this song get's done faster which takes away some of the 'romantic' feel which they've injected back in to the song

Im a bass myself and that switch from a bass note up to the actuall note is kinda natural for me (probably for most basses). It just feels good and easy plus benefits my voice type

Ooh! I found your channel through your reaction to Bang!(!) This was really neat, pretty insightful : ) They always put a ton of info in their descriptions if you wanted to see who did the arranging, video, etc. The bass(Geoff) and vocal percussionist(Layne) typically do their arranging(although their recent Eleanor Rigby video was by Eli(the tenor with glasses)
If you were interested in a bit of I guess behind the scenes, Layne did an interview on the channel "The Charismatic Voice" on how they produced their Moana Medley, Geoff has a video on his own channel(Geoff Castellucci) on how he arranges for Voiceplay, and that note that startled you around the 4-something minute mark on the Bang! video was a subharmonic, which is so cool, but if you wanted to know more about them and other bass techniques, Geoff also has videos titled something like "How to Sing Really LOW"
While I'd totally watch if you did, these videos aren't ones to persay react to, there's just a lot of really cool info in them if you wanted to see : )
Beyond that I'd just be echoing what everyone else is saying, so many good ones, I'd put a note on Oogie Boogie thought, maybe wait until you're familiar with them because their character voices are a lot cooler when you're already familiar with their normal voices
Geoff also has his own channel with some bass covers, for which he does all the parts, nothing you can really go wrong with!

Part of the note shift is basically the first rule of acappella, which is to sustain sound throughout. It's part of making up for the lack of instruments. Accompanied singers can take breaks from producing sound because they have instrumentation filling in. Check out the breath placement in acappella vs accompanied too.

Yes, Geoff is doing octave and 5th shifts for the bass line... this is very common in bass singing. He alternates that with runs to link back to the root or non-root or 5ths of the chord, as well. I am a bass and was taught how to move the larynx just enough to make those jumps rapidly... Geoff is just much better at it than I am.

Love your reactions and analysis. I always learn something from you and your take lends depth to the listening experience. As a reactor, it must be difficult to take commentary breaks because you've never heard the cover arrangement so you don't know what an artist is going to do with the song. Usually, it's not a huge problem. But for your own listening pleasure, may I suggest that you go back and listen to this one again? One of your breaks was right in the middle of an awesome run by Eli (guy in the hat) and I think you'd appreciate it immensely.
This group tends (not in this song, but usually) to be a bit more theatrical than Pentatonix or Home Free. It might stem from their location in the Orlando, FL area and I think several of them used to work for the theme parks there?
And, also not being a bass, I've wondered about the visual tone shift in some of the bass singers also. However, your point that it occurred here with a full octave slide is interesting. I've wondered if it also might occur with the change between chest voice and mixed-range and head voice for the basses, because all 4 basses (Geoff, Tim, Matt, Avi) in the big 3 acapella groups you mentioned have very extensive ranges. I notice it also in Pentatonix's Scott Hoying, who is a baritone but covers bass for Matt (and, formerly, Avi) during their lead segments. Probably the most pronounced I've seen it in him is in their live version of "Hallelujah" but you can also catch glimpses of him singing bass in "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Sound of Silence." Scott tucks his chin down into his chest and you can see him concentrating on hitting those notes to give them some volume. But when he sings in his upper full chest voice and mixed registers, his chin is level or up (the first verse of "Hallelujah," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" or his lead in the middle of "Bohemian Rhapsody"). Just thinking...
It's hard for me to remember what you've covered of theirs and what you haven't for suggestions. But "Oogie Boogie's Song," "Queen in Five Minutes," "Boy Bands in Five Minutes," any of their Disney stuff. They do song transitions very, very well and their dissonant chords and arrangements are phenomenal. Geoff arranged Home Free's cover of "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys, btw.
    Thanks again.

I think You need to watch more from Geoff. Because he OFTEN has a face that does not match the note he sings. - Even live. I think it's a different way to produce the sound than others. But he always looks like there is no effort in what he does,, except when he goes thre octaves higher and really belts it out. - I suggest You watch the oogie boogie song to see all of it better.

I have tremendous respect for the show of talent in this. I do. But it seems over-arranged to me, for what I expect a simple love ballad to be. I much prefer PTX's version, which, while comparatively simply arranged, still has those beautiful dissonances, and does a better job capturing the feeling I expect the song to give me, but YMMV, and I totally respect that this version may suit some tastes more.
