Real shit. The whole lore drop about the Ice King and why he’s the way he is came way the hell out of left field and made you lock in for the rest of this show.
"Hello. My name is Simon Petrikov". Those 6 little words and everything changes. At the very end of what was ostensibly a Christmas episode. After lulling you into thinking it was just going to be another early seasons randomness episode.
The story of how Simon Petrikov became the Ice King so tragic and adds so many new dimensions to his character. He lost his mind, his fiancée, his humanity, everything, because of that crown. Even so, a part of him is still looking for his "princess". That's why he kidnaps them.
hell, we see that right here most of the episode finn still thinks of ice king as a legitimate villain but with the reveal finn softens on him and realises that ice king is a victim too
There's countless stories out there of kids watching this episode and suddenly understanding what's happening with their elderly family members. I once saw one guy talk about how his grandma was watching the show with him, behind him in the couch, not really getting cartoons and such, when she suddenly started crying as this reveal played out, and he didn't know why. He wouldn't learn until much later that she had recently been diagnosed with dementia at the time.
And man, just the fact that Alicia was already so empathetic to Ice King even BEFORE the reveal. Reading his intense desire for closeness, companionship, and love, through the madness and his more villainous acts Just knowing that he was an ordinary, kind-hearted, human with a beloved partner beforehand, it's devastating
The realization of just how old the ice king is, why he’s obsessed with marrying a princess, how long he’s been living a tormented existence with his only blessing being too insane to realize how far he’s fallen…man this episodes final twist came out of nowhere and hits you hard. There had been other episodes that showed that Adventure time could be dark but after this there was a new sense of maturity to this show full off childish antics and characters.
remember: they don't have christmas in Ooo. THe holiday was forgotten. this introduces a psuedo version of christmas creatred by accident, all because finn realised that ice king wasn't a villain and decided to be kind to one of the most tragic characters in Ooo and got everyone else together (including Phil and this guy) to share that kindness. this highlights why FInn's a Hero.
I always love getting to see peoples reaction to the reveal of how ice king went from a silly weirdo villain to a tragic character that you cannot ever really see the same again after this episode
What's funny is they actually revealed that in the Fionna and Cake episode the Ice King wrote. Fionna said not to wear the Tiara because "You'll catch her crazy!"
Dude, someday when alicia gets to that, she will understand this reference, and it will be one of the most heart-wrenching episode of "adventure time";) ;) she will watch, besides another character we know and love ;) ;). Disclaimer: i am trying to be inconspicuous, so that i won't spoil anything to alicia, it depends on her if she can figure out the little hints(the punctuations i am using) i was saying.
The Ice King's mind has been broken so horribly that he can no longer conceive of how much he has lost, even when directly confronted by it. He is truly and thoroughly lost. And it hurts. It hurts so much to see it... because far too many of us have known people who became just as lost.
I'm sure it's been said before but I've seen the crowns influence being compared to Alzheimer's dementia. So it's not that he's a bad guy, he just doesn't know better, and the worst part is deep down he remembers calling betty his princess and it's just been so jumbled in his head he thinks he's looking for a princess to love him.
The timing of her watching this was actually pretty damn close to Christmas. But yeah, this whole time Finn and Jake have been beating the shit out of a mentally ill, old man. Early seasons feel different now.
In hindsight yeah it's awful. But at the time nobody, not even the Ice king, knew who he was or why he was like that. Afterward they start treating him different, even calling him by his name.
Ice King truly is one of the most tragic cartoon characters I've ever seen. Finding out that he was a normal, happy man driven insane by a crown he chanced upon makes you see everything he's done up to this point in a completely different light.
What's crazy about these episodes is the tapes were originally going to be clips of old christmas shows that inspire Finn and Jake to bring christmas back to the land of Ooo. But, they couldn't get that greenlit. So, they pivoted and dropped a massive lore bomb in the form of a christmas special. They are such a creative team, I love it.
After this episode Finn's perception of Ice King shifted from psycho villain with no adequate reasons for his actions, to someone with history, past and life before all this. After this episode Ice king ironically became more "human" to Finn. And it's going to, in words of Super Kami Guru, "All downhill from here", in good sense mind you.
as shown FInn was obsessed with finding Ice King's villain secrets, because despite everything he still saw him as a legitimate bad guy but when he learns the truth he drops it and gives the tapes back, cause now he knows the truth he can no longer see simon as a villain, just a sad old man hurt by magic
Man, every time I see the ice king not clocking that finn is literally just giving him his tapes back i get a bit teary eyed, it makes me think of the song "make sure he's ok" by jay foreman
My face can't decide which expression to make and is trying for multiple at once. Like, "Alicia is learning about the Ice King~" :-) "Alicia is learning about the Ice King..." :-(
The moment I learned you were watching this show this episode was the one I was most excited for, because this episode is when I realized that adventure time is something special
I like the detail that he studied historical mythologies and artefacts, so the idea of claiming a princess to solve all his problems is actually one of the few distorted remnants of his old memory.
I am watching this and I'm all, "You don't know, You don't even know. This rabbit hole is one of the deepest in the show and ties so much together. You don't even know yet."

YES.... YES...... IS HERE OOOOOMAAAAAAA GLLLLLOB Also remember that season 2 final episode? Ice king said... "All the tine Crazy crazy crazy in your face..all the time.....all the time...."
of course it may be obvious to note, but it should be pointed out regardless: the reason the ice king is obsessed with princesses is because that's what he thought his wife was to him, his princess. he keeps kidnapping princesses because it's all he can remember of his wife anymore, his longing for a princess. Its just he can't remember the right 'princess'
The moment we all realized Ice King was one of the main characters of this world and Finn and Jake are just passing through. Also that realization that the only reason ice King is abducting these princesses is because they call themselves princesses. If they just used the title of queens or something he in his demented state would have no interest in them. It is all because his pet name for his fiancé was princess. Also a fun note, when we see Simon's artifacts, all of them either have or will be in the show at some point, the fact so many magic things are so nearby in this setting might be because he did such a good job finding them for the local museum.
Now that’s left of the ice king’s origins, how the crown was made, and why one of those tapes Ice king was wearing black hair and singing Marceline song
I have been waiting for you to upload this(one of my favorite episode), after all the excruciating pain in waiting, it was all worth it for you to see ice king's lore and true self, and now i have to wait again for one of my favorite episode(lore again) to be uploaded
@@youssefamr6824a true fan indeed, i almost did not get it, "it's all in here the page, in this take out menu, in this song, in this news letter, hahaha"
Yeah, not gonna a lie, this one hurt when it came out. All the worst parts of Ice King are literally from the crown and he was just a regular guy that predated the Mushroom War and survived because of how it changed him. When you eventually learn more of his past from this era and finally get the backstory of the crown itself... oof. Then it hurts even more. Ice king is by far the more tragic character in Adventure Time. He's all but an allegory for cognitive issues like Alzheimer's and dementia stealing away and warping more of your mind as you age.
This is such a good episode Absolutely out of nowhere, Christmas special, one of the biggest lore drops in the series Ice King used to be human and fell to madness by the crown There’s a bunch of obvious parallels you can draw to him being a senile old man too, barely remembering who he is and all
Honestly, the fact that Ice King can't even recognize the actual reason on why that tape is so sad, because he doesn't even remember being Simon makes me curl up into a ball and explode
This episode explains a lot about why the ice king is the way he is, like how he seems to forget certain things and has a horrible attention span which makes past episodes a lot sadder in hindsight 😞
Hold your pants on for this wild ride. This is only the beginning of the tears and tragedy. This show looks goofy and cute at the beginning, but this is the turning point, where it really begins to change from a good cartoon to a legendary cartoon.
I could be wrong but I think Finn calls Ice King Simon after this episode, but there might be instances where he doesn't. All I know is he starts to see him as Simon after this which is super cool
"Betty, My princess" he used to call the love of his life princess and now, a thousand years later and completly mad he tries to get a princess to fill the void left by her departure
Hey, remember when we just thought ice king was just a goofy villain?... Well, that time is too far gone and will never come back, cause he's not just a silly guy, he's someone who completely lost his mind, he doesn't know who he used to be, doesn't know the people who are important to him, heck, he can't even remember his own name
To me, one aspect of ice king that I'm not sure if i should think is funny or just sad, is the fact that he doesn't realise how tragic his backstory is. His brain was fucked up by his crown so much, it (his brain) doesn't really register how sad his life is.
This point was a bit of a turning point for Finn and Jake after learning this truth, as they start slowly becoming more tolerant of Ice King if not sympathetic.
THIS, this is the episode that truly started the change of Adventure Time from a fun good show to an asbolute GOATED show.

The story of how Simon Petrikov became the Ice King so tragic and adds so many new dimensions to his character. He lost his mind, his fiancée, his humanity, everything, because of that crown. Even so, a part of him is still looking for his "princess". That's why he kidnaps them.
and he doesn't even recognize this, when he saw that video of his past self the only thing that registered is that "he used to wear glasses"
"Super embarrassing" she said. Little did she know
It was… now they know he used to wear glasses
Well, she was half right. It was embarrassing from Simon's point of view.
This was just a random Christmas episodes and then they dropped that lore bomb like it was super casual. Changed everything for the ice king literally
hell, we see that right here
most of the episode finn still thinks of ice king as a legitimate villain
but with the reveal finn softens on him and realises that ice king is a victim too
yeah, I can't believe they revealed ice king's need for glasses without any foreshadowing, since that episode I saw him through different lenses
It changed the series going forward
They just casually dropped a massive lore bomb where we least expected it. From then on, Adventure Time was never the same. It became a masterpiece.
Yeah... Phil's appearance *did* change everything from now on
