They're Still Telling You Jayson Tatum Is NOT A Superstar

  • Jayson Tatum has been playing at an MVP level a quarter into the NBA season. But some on ESPN still don't want to call him a superstar. Despite having led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals in the 2022 playoffs & winning the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, it's still not enough. The media would much rather anoint other players as superstars despite them not having achieved what Tatum has in his young career.

Your criteria is just so undefinable and nebulous that anyone could or couldn't be a superstar. A superstar is just someone who has the potential of carrying a sub-par team well into the playoffs; someone whose mere presence makes a team more dangerous, of which there are usually only 5 or 6 of in a season (Steph, Luka, Giannis, Tatum, Jokic, maybe Embiid but he's too injury prone, and that's it, neither Ja nor DBook can carry a team like these guys can.

I think the superstar Tier should just go by a pretty easy criteria as a baseline (This can be open enough that people can chose players that fit the mold) :
-Must be at least top 3 at your position
-Putting up All-Nba numbers (All-Nba matters more than All-Star)
-Leading or Have Lead a team to a top 3 Seed in regular season
-Being the best player on Their team (Whether or not their an outward leader leader aka, Durant and Kawhi)
-Have lead a team to deep Playoff run (At least To a conference finals).
People can fall out of superstardom if their play has fallen off for a long enough period of time. Because people seem to think that some players cant be Superstars because their are older ones still playing, and they dont want a big list. Even if those old players arent playing at that level anymore. What do yall think?

      Damian Lillard
      Devin Booker
      Trae Young
      Kevin Durant
      Jimmy Butler
Still widely considered superstars or rising superstars but missing criteria:
Embiid - (never made conf. Finals, but still plays at MVP level)
Kahwi - (Been unhealthy, but when healthy is MVP, and Championship caliber)
Harden - (Role and health are dimished. But at full health and locked in is MVP caliber)
Ja Morant - (Has yet to make a Conf. Finals but is still incredibly young, and is Capable of MVP Numbers)
Donavon Mitchel- (Yet to lead a team to a Conf. Finals)
Zion - (Low playtime due to health and yet to lead a team to Conf finals)
Shai Gil. - (Plays for low seeded team but Capable of MVP numbers)

I saw a pole for whether or not he is one just the other day, and he basically passed with over 90% of the vote saying “yes.” Plus, if u didn’t think he was a SUPER Star after the finals, you better have changed that opinion after seeing how well he’s playing this season.

I think superstars shouldn't be judged for past play and only play during this season. The people that fall under the umbrella of superstar for me (in no particular order) are Tatum, Luka, Curry, Lillard, Booker, Embiid, Jokic, Giannis, KD, AD, Mitchell, and SGA. They are putting up MVP numbers (some more than others). But this season their play has qualified them for superstar status in my eyes. Some stars in the league right now are Jaylen Brown, Lebron, Kyrie, PG, Haliburton is the closest to superstar with his insane passing, I think Trae Young is also a star close to being a super star but he hasn't had the best start to the season, could definitely see him being on the superstar list as the season progresses. There are definitely other star's i'm forgetting but I think this is pretty accurate of the state of the league.

Ok the difference between a super star, and just a star. Is longevity. Jayson Tatum is 100% a star. Give him a couple more years he’s a superstar.
I agree there’s not a lot of superstars in the NBA. You got what
    LeBron James
    Kevin Durant
    Steph Curry
    Giannis Antetokounmpo
    There’s really not much.
But if Jayson Tatum keeps playing the way he’s been playing, absolutely he’s going to be a superstar. But he’s only been in the NBA for the last couple years.

"How is there only 6 Super Stars, and somehow Kyrie ends up there"..? Dude, Kyrie is literally one of the most skilled players this league has ever seen, he's by far a Super Star. And I genuinely agree with her, but I'd say maybe 8 or 9 super stars. There's a difference between super star and star. Like guy's like Mitchell, DeRozen, Booker, Beal, Lillard, Brown etc.. aren't super stars in my opinion. A Super Star is a guy that you just know is a lock for the hall of fame, and is head over heels, miles ahead of the competition. Like LeBron, KD, Curry, Kyrie, Giannis, Harden and now maybe Tatum, Luka and possibly Jokic and Embiid even though they bore TF out of me. But I'm with her for the most part.

That’s hilarious that they have Ja who’s done nothing over Tatum. It’s even crazier they’d mention JT having a supporting cast when Ja is the one who missed a bunch of time and his team had a crazy record in that time. They literally had segments debating if Grizzlies were better without Ja because of it. Just blows my mind…

    Mine?
In no particular order. Tatum, Joker, Lebron, Booker, Giannis, Durant, Curry, Embid, Luka, Dame, Butler.
Some borderline guys that could be at some point: Trae, Mitchell, Ja, Lavine, Beal, Garland, SGA, KAT, Murray x2.
Some recent ones that have fallen off but could possibly get back are Kawhi, Harden, Kyrie (ignoring offcourt BS), George, CP, Davis, Gobert.

Superstar is a loose term. Some people view superstars are like world wide recognizable faces, some people view superstars as like the cream of the crop players. Jokic doesn’t fall into that popular guy fit but he’s one the best 5 players in the league. Then vice versa for Kyrie. He’s more popular than most people you would put higher than him in player rankings.
