Luka Doncic Is Falling Into The James Harden Trap

  • Luka Doncic has had to do everything for the Dallas Mavericks to win games. The offense is similar to what James Harden was asked to do for the Houston Rockets. More people are now starting to criticize Doncic for not getting his teammates involved and have also suggested that his career arc will be just like Harden's time in Houston.

    Honestly that analysis is right on the head, luka is not going to win anything but conference finals or second round exit's if the whole west is healthy, his talent alone just like lebron and harden can take u close but its about winning not just putting up numbers thats why he wont win anything he can win a league mvp thats about it

      Exactly my point. A lot of people get upset (as expected) that I would compare the two when all I'm saying is that no matter how great Luka's numbers are, he most likely won't win playing this style of basketball with Dallas. And he'd have to control his destiny like LeBron did earlier in his career to win in a better built roster.

      Wood is a third option on a championship team. He's their 2nd best player. Finney-Smith is the only other Mav who would start on a contender (decent shooter, best defender on the team, doesn't turn the ball over). Until the Mavs have a legitimate second option, they aren't going anywhere.
      Look at the Warriors last year. Steph is a great first option. Klay is a great 2nd option. Wiggins is a great 3rd option. Draymond is that wild effort-and-defense -type guy every contender needs and he's a great facilitator and rebounder (probably the 2nd most important guy on the team, behind Steph). And they had the perfect blend of roleplayers. So far this year, they got rid of some key roleplayers and Klay & Dray are starting to slow down due to age & injury. They could heat up in the 2nd half; vets tend to do that.
      Look at the Bucks' recent title team. Giannis is a superstar. His team was deep and well-balanced with a great defense.
      Now look at the Mavs. Their superstar, despite being one of the most skilled guys to ever play the game, whines and bitches and pouts all game and leads by setting a poor example quite often. Not exactly leader material. We forget that Jordan was a cancer to his team the first 7 years in the league, despite being a god on the court, so Luka could figure it out and grow the hell up. Wood is a solid 3rd option. Dodo is a solid guy. Diniddie would be a great 6th man. Josh Green could develop into a solid guy -- still really inconsistent now. Everybody else should be coming off the bench or on a different team. They're not contenders. They signed Kemba Walker. If he can play like it's 2018 (healthy and doing all the things he did before he got hurt), he could, maybe, be that decent #2 guy the Mavs need, for a season or two (when age & injuries finally retire him from the league). Possible, but really unlikely. More likely, he's going to limp along, play in a few games, and disappear at the end of the year.

    I don't agree. Doncic is simply playing to their roster's strengths and offensive gameplan. Since brunson is gone, they are lacking shot creators and playmakers. It's just spot up marksmen. So their best offense is having luka bully guards for easy post up buckets, draw doubles, kick it out. He's not dribbling the air out of the ball for a step back every possession like harden did!

  • @CykoruKun
    @CykoruKun Год назад +29

    True but Dallas roster is a mess now so it is tough to draw any meaningful conclusions out of this. Both Luka and Harden reached WCF but Harden had better shooters, legitimate second superstar, two elite 3&D wings, great lob threat and rebounder in Capela. Overall last season Mavs look like store brand version of 17-18 Rockets and this season they are even worse. If this is really what the management is going for then this franchise needs a slap in the face. But Luka is a competitor, if he needs to maintain PER of 45 to make his team be good then he will do it, it is on the management to find him a team who can shoulder some weight too.

  • @randygraham926
    @randygraham926 Год назад +1

    Let's blame the 23-year old player as opposed to the blockhead owner, incompetent GM, or his current coach. Mavs lost their 2nd best player when Brunson went to the Knicks -- where his Dad is a coach. NY also offered Jalen a big contract, which Mavs didn't even attempt to match. The brainiacs who run the Mavs made ZERO effort to replace Brunson with another playmaker, leaving Luka as the only player on the team who can create shots for himself and his teammates. Dinwiddie can create shots for himself but isn't a point guard.
    Rest of the guys on the Mavs roster are catch and shoot players -- or dunkers. Some of them can't dribble and most of the "shooters" aren't consistent.
    Christian Wood was a good addition but can NOT replace Brunson -- so the team is now worse than it was last year. Goran Dragic wanted to play with Luka but the Mav's brainiac owner didn't want him.
    Mark Cuban is the same owner who let Steve Nash walk away from the Mavs for nothing -- refusing to match the Sun's offer -- because he didn't think Nash was that good. Nash went on to win TWO MVPs while playing for the Suns. Brunson may not be Steve Nash but the whole situation is eerily familiar if you know the history of the Mav's organization.
    Anyway, Mavs now 1-7 on the road and would not make the playoffs if they started today. Mavs just have too many mediocre players filling up the roster; Bertans getting paid 16 million and Hardaway Jr. 20 million -- so lots of money tied up in non-productive players. Brunson looks like a bargain compared to these guys.
    If Luka gets hurt this team will be competing with the Rockets and Spurs for Victor Wembanyama. And they might not make the playoffs even with him. 🤔
    Luka might win the scoring title because he's going to have to put up big scoring numbers with this weak bunch to keep them in games, but this is not a team going anywhere in the playoffs. Don't think this owner and his new GM are competent to build a good team around Luka.
    If he's smart he'll play out his contract and go somewhere else with competent management if he ever hopes to win a title.
    Anyway, it's all Luka's fault. 🤣

    I love Luka, he can carry an entire NBA offense by himself due of his immense skill, passing and IQ. But I did quietly have the same criticisms over the past two seasons as I didn't think the basketball the Mavs were playing was sustainable and it would only lead them so far deep into the playoffs. Luka is the main and pretty much only offensive creator for this Mavs team and while you can make good arguments for the Mavs roster not being talented enough to allow for a more team orientated offense, having Luka be the only player who can initiate offense throughout the regular season may not lead to consistent title runs which is what Luka's talent warrants. I'm not too worried as Luka is a generational player with an extremely high competitive almost fearless presence on court. He's still very young and will no doubt win championships in his career. But it is a valid concern to see him being relied upon so much as the sole playmaker for his team

    What was described as the Mavs offense centering around one player having the ball constantly to the point of hindering the overall team's development is exactly what lebron has been doing since his second season, to the point that fan perception of both Chris Bosh and Kevin Love is that they were faux superstars or second tier guys when in reality they were among the best in the NBA before having to change their entire games to fit how lebron plays. It was so bad on the Cavs that if he wasn't on the court, the team was barely functional because the entire offense ran through him touching the ball constantly, and when he was removed it all became discombobulated and broken. Then ESPN talking heads use that to disparage his handpicked team and absolve him of any blame. Conversely, if Kyrie keeps the pace he's had for these last 8 games with the Mavs, I think it's clear that Luka doesn't have this issue. Kyrie is down in scoring by .5, but his assists are up 1.5, FG% is up 4, and 3 point% is up 5. Luka's usage is a little bit up from what it used to be, but the Mavs also lost Brunson, who was an offensive engine for them, in the offseason. I think Kyrie can make up for both Brunson and Dinwiddie though, and if they are able to keep Kyrie they should look for some replacements for DFS and a center who's good in the paint on both sides of the court to go with Wood at PF. That's a team that could win the championship.

Luka’s got 1 other player on his team that can dribble, they lack basic NBA skillsets; can’t pass/create/make decisions/etc, but the narrative is that Luka’s selfish, that he needs to get his teammates more involved, it’s his fault they’re shooting bricks. It’s insane. Also why is anyone trying to say a 23 yr old is the same as 30 yr old prime Harden? He’s too young for that AND we’ve never seen him with anywhere near the caliber of talent that Harden has had. And prime Harden is nothing to be ashamed of anyway, especially when unlike Harden, Luka maintains that level in the playoffs. Also at Luka's age Harden was playing on a team alongside two other future MVP players and they still couldn't win it. Luka dribbles the clock down not because he has to, but because that is part of the Mavericks strategy to keep the pace extremely slow. Harden in contrast played for D'Antoni, whose offensive schemes are known to inflate some players stats.

      Wood is thrilled to be out of Houston and getting more passes. Brunson got to be primary playmaker much of the time in Dallas but Knicks hired his FATHER, Rick, as a coach -- and offered him a lot of money. Mavs failed to even try to replace Brunson... big mistake by owner.

      Why are y’all in these comments actually talking like this mavs team should be winning a championship. Curry or Lebron or Durant haven’t won a championship without other stars. So why should Luka ??? They went to the west conference finals last year. Even tho they were predicted to lose every round.

      @Yessuh I’m him that’s. Horrible reason. Put Luka on Celtics with Jalen brown and Marcus smart. I doubt Dallas making playoffs with Jason Taytum

    Luka's team sucks. You can't blame him for starting players shooting less than 30 percent. Give him half the talent Steph has to work with then let's see what happens.

    Porzingis showed today what he can produce. Shame he couldn't show that talent at the mavs

      He never pl3aayed more than 57 games in a season for the mavs. He was very productive for stretches like hes gone on now when fit.

    Luka way better than Harden.

    Harden never stopped posting up in Houston. That was an integral part of his game.

    I almost forgot Seth Curry was on the Mavs. I love Spencer he’s really big for them but Seth is elite. He would definitely take pressure off Luka and be their best shooter.

    First off, Luka IS James Harden. Only thing he has in common with Lebron is being a protégé and court vision. Giannis is Lebron. Shai is Brad Beal. Jaden Ivey is Russ.

    Need to trade him up for a handful of playmakers so the team can stive as well as Luka. They both need very different lineups.

    I think that the "He doesn't involve his teammates" narrative is misguided. He literally can't let anyone make plays for the Mavs because he is the only playmaker in the team. About shot creating? yes, Certain guys in the team can score but they're not consistent. The team has multiple people that can well average over 20 points per game besides Luka. But their lack of efficiency and consistency blurs who really is the "second guy" behind Luka.
