Why Don't Real Madrid Produce Any Great Players?

  • Real Madrid are arguably the biggest club in world football, their academy is among the largest and best-funded on the planet, and they have more former youth team players competing in La Liga and Europe's top five leagues as a whole than any other club.
There's just one small problem... They haven't actually produced any truly great players for the last 20 years.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the dearth of world class talent to have come out of Real Madrid's La Fábrica youth ranks since the days of Raúl and Iker Casillas, the reasons behind that anomaly, especially in relation to their El Clasico rivals Barcelona & La Masia, and why Real Madrid don't actually seem to mind.

You forgot to add the La Quinta del Buitre era in the 1980s which kickstarted when Real Madrid Castilla reached a Copa Del Rey final in 1980 which is unprecedented in football history amongst top clubs, and guess who they faced in the final? Oh yes, they faced the first team of Real Madrid and lost the final. It resulted that most of the squad of Castilla was promoted into the first team which included Emilio Butrageno, Manolo Sanchis, Michel etc, pretty much over 80 percent of the entire Real Madrid first team squad in the 80s was homegrown players and they won 5 consecutive La ligas as well which is a domestic record including a European cup final. Their model was similar to Barca during that time, the thing is Real Madrid quickly realized that model is not sustainable in the long run. It's not everyday you will find exceptional players coming through the ranks, therefore their current model is a better one from experience. Barca was pretty much lucky with Puyol, Messi, Iniesta, Xavi etc all coming from nearly the same generation. These kinds of players doesn't grow on a tree and before 2006 pretty much no one even talked about the success of La Masia, in fact on the contrary they where focused on buying stars, take their dream team of the early 90s as a clear example. In any case, great analysis.

That´s because Florentino Pérez refused to sign Kane or any other worthy forwards in the hopes that Mbappe would finally join.
      1) Mbappe can play as a 9 but it´s a complete wasate to put him there given how much he can give you on the left wing.
      2) Of how much use can Mbappe be if you already have Vini who is top 5 in the world at that section and there are many others, like the entire defense line for instance, who are not even close?
      3) Signing Mbappe would mean putting the entire club on mortgage. No matter what the media wants to tell you (we all know who gives them the envelope), Real Madrid doesn´t have 5 bucks to save its life.
      4) Mbappe is a player that can turn your entire locker to shreds just with his presence, he is bound to become a toxic self-absorbed leader.
But yeah, I´d love to see al Torito on the squad, as a uruguayan. No clue why Ancelotti doesn´t even give him a few minutes in this circumstances and instead puts Rodrygo, who is as apt as a 9 in Real Madrid as you, me, or Ancelotti himself.

Many reports from the club say that Real Madrid might be shifting to actually using players from the academy in the future - it's becoming much more difficult to compete financially with English and Arab clubs, so the board believes it might be more profitable to actually spend that money into the development of homegrown players - they have already decided to transfer younger players in to develop them at the club instead of buying big stars (with some exceptions) for that same reason, and now they might take it a step further

Madrid's youth teams dominate all competitions just like Barça's do. They both aim to play an attacking, possession based style of football and are able to control games from start to finish. The difference is that Barca's is much more specific and clearly defined and players are specialised within certain roles. On top of that, the style/system remains the same at 1st team level. This means that if a top player comes in an academy player can compete for a place because they've been trained to play their role from a young age. Madrid's 1st team change the way they play based on the coach and their best players making the adaption process too big of a jump for young players.
We mustn't forget that young players need time to develop to reach their best level in pro football. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and co. didn't become stars overnight. They had the fundamentals required to snap up a chance to play in the 1st team and from there they went from strength to strength. This is probably the reason why Barça have dominated Spanish football in recent years but only elite teams filled with elite players can consistently deliver the Champions League. Madrid's obsession and entire purpose for existing.

While both approaches are valid since they dominate in Spain and Europe, the Barça way feels better because an academy player should be designed to play for the first team first and foremost. Look at the recant Barca signings and their impact:
    Raphinha 58m
    Coutinho 135m
    Ferran Torres 55m
    Miralem Pjanic 60m
    Trincão 30m
    Sergiño Dest 21m

    Junior Firpo 20m
    Neto 26m
    Antoine Griezmann 120m
    Arturo Vidal 18m
    Arthur Melo 31m
    Clément Lenglet 35m
    Malcom 41m
    Gerard Deulofeu 12m
    Yerry Mina 13m
    Nélson Semedo 35m
    Paulinho 40m
    Ousmane Dembélé 135m
    Jasper Cillessen 13m

    Samuel Umtiti 25m
    Paco Alcácer 30m
    André Gomes 37m
    Aleix Vidal 17m
    Arda Turan 34m
So, Barca signed these players with high expectations, but they under performed and barca sold them cheaper than their joining cost.

The difficulty in attracting talent in the market due to the financial power of Saudi League, Qatar, Man City and some others will mean they are a bit less likely to get the best players in the world each year.

So many thoughts on this vid 😅 I’ll speak as a (hopefully well informed) Madridista.
Comparing us to Barca is kind of like comparing apple and oranges : Real Madrid where founded by catalan brothers studying at the first secular university in madrid. They always had that universal and humanist vision so Real was never rooted as a truly « local » club. But their first fans came from the bullfighting crowd from the arena next to their pitch. So they only admired great men fighting like madmen on the biggest stages, and they booed plenty when they didn’t like what they were seeing. That’s our founding myth, already universal and yet very passionate (in the joy and the criticism). Very different from Barca’s...
Also saying that our squad was more academy driven when only 5 of our starters were from la fabrica is kind of bad faith, we’re in 1966 ! Way before Spain joined the EU and the Bosman act ! And yet we have only 5 starters from la fabrica ? It only proves my point ;) Real Madrid was founded and held together by great men from everywhere in the footballing world unafraid of big challenges and always wanting more. Men for whom the biggest team in their country was too small and their fellow countrymen’s shoes too tight. We should check how many captains from international teams where at real madrid, between Puskas, Kopa, Hierro, Raul, Figo, Casillas, Zidane, Ronaldo, Bale, Modric, Kroos, Alaba etc... A whole team of leaders who transform under pressure.
And what is that you say about our philosophy being « only » about winning ? That’s the whole point of the game ! And always pushing boundries in the process😊 Tiki taka ? Before Cruyff came to Barca as a player we had « la quinta del Buitre » all from the academy and all very gifted technically, loving to pass and keeping the ball. So yes we strive to win it all, everytime, but that makes us like water, capable of adapting to any situation, changing our form but not our focus. And our Academy is a reflection of that, well rounded footballers who want to give their best for their team, nothing wrong with that, they have a career, it’s a lot. Barcas academy players are all the hype and yet a lot of them cannot adapt to any other football team so when they are discarded for the first team (and that’s 95% of the young lads) they have nothing... For us being a Madridista is not tethered to a place : it’s a way of life, of excellence, just trying to be the best at what you do.
Also Florentino Perez is possibly the greatest football president in the history of football taking a club in huge financial peril and transforming it in the biggest brand in football while winning six champions leagues in the process. Obsessed with winning (as any madridista) he never took a dime but gave everything to his boyhood club. He isn’t very marketable contrary to a lot of sly club owners or presidents but his heart is in the right place and he does it out of passion not money : so he’s far from being an african dictator imo. And it’s not him asking for the name change, it’s the millions of madridistas.
And yes he was traumatized by Neymar and has Fomo now with brazilian kid but he also realized that we’re not a private club, we’re not backed by a state or a business venture capitol bank whatever, we’re rich yes, but our pockets aren’t bottomless like some other clubs, every cent we spend is a cent we make ourselves. So we need to be smart and careful, we can’t make many mistakes. So he switched from contracting the best players in the world to the best prospects and carefully assembling them with experienced players, and, for now, it’s still working and beautifully I might add.
Last thing, I love Pedri, his vision of the game, his elegance, I’m sorry about his injuries, Gabi is overhyped imo but the reason he’s admired is his tenacious and never-let-go-never-back-down attitude which is more reminescent of the 2 Madrid clubs than Barca.
PS : I’m a big fan of your videos Alfie 😮 I truly admire your never ending quality content ! Keep up the good work, thank you for the deep dives and humane angles, the world of football needs it. And don’t forget : you can be a Madridista anywhere, you just need to do your best !

Real Madrid academy has the same issue as Boca juniors had back in the 1990s to 2009ish. They can produce talent but they never nurture it the best way possible, for example giving them 1st team time or allowing them to stay long enough in the club so they understand the tactics. The main issue is that those players are sold instantly because of the club reputation and never get a chance to shine in the club because they never get a spot if top tier world class players come to the 1st team.

Chelsea have a great academy, and are responsible for the following team - Etheridge - Ake, Tomori, Colwill, Guehi, James - Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher, Hudson-Odoi - Abraham, (Arguable Rice could be added to this team)
Quite impressive but few of these would make it into an all-time Chelsea graduate XI which could contain Bonetti - Le Saux, Harris Terry James - Hudson, Hollins, Wilkins, Venables - Osgood Greaves
Only James makes the team, but many are from the 60s, yet the 60s Chelsea academy didn't have the same success at youth level as in more recent times. I wonder if the reason for this is the pool of available talent (ie the whole World rather than the UK), and the need for immediate success meaning bringing in academy players is a risk. In fact Chelsea's transfer ban probably helped establish James, Mount and Abraham in the 1st team.

It’s great. It’s realistic. It’s profitable. What’s not to like?
Instead of filling our youngsters heads with pipe dreams that they could be the next Xavi or Messi, Real Madrid puts no pressure on their youngsters.
Instead they provided with the steady route to the success of their careers. One step of a ladder at a time. From Youth Team to First Division Mid-Low Table Team, letting them try to establish their place there and flourish their talents while keeping close attention to their progress rather than forcing them into Real’s first team where the pressure is at the highest in the world football. They can progress at their own pace with no pressure on their shoulders unlike the likes of Ansu Fati or Bojan who crumbled under the pressure of their first team and failed to realize their potentials.
And if they are good enough then we will Welcome them to the Real Madrid First Team. The peak of World of Football and the dream of every players.”..
If they are not, then they would still at least be a respectable player who made a living by playing football in their respective teams.

    • @mattanderson8575
      @mattanderson8575 8 месяцев назад +13

Not sure I agree with what you seem to be implying that the Madrid approach is better for the players. I think it’s a matter of opinion and that one is not clearly better or worse, they are just different and based on different club cultures and approaches to success. For Real they want to attract the best players from anywhere and they use their academy as a source of funding for that. For Barca, they are looking to uncover the next superstar player and give them the development needed and a path to their own first team. One is not necessarily better or worse, they are just different.
For the players there’s still pressure to perform or you’ll be let go like anywhere else. You’re still treated like an asset which will be sold to fund a preferred arrival from somewhere else, and you know that even should you be part of the select few that does very well at youth level you’ll be moved on anyways and have to start fresh in a new club/city/country. Unless there’s actual evidence to suggest that one approach is better for the players than the other it’s just a matter of opinion. I’m not so sure that one approach results in more youth players being dropped or let go should they not reach standards, as the standards are insanely high at both places, just different outcomes should you reach those standards.

    • @Long_DoooG
      @Long_DoooG 8 месяцев назад +5

@@mattanderson8575 Yes it is a matter of opinion, but I’d agree Madrid’s way are more realistic. The profits and Real Madrid’s health in finance are the testament of the results..
They didnt rely on “could be” the next superstars in which they wouldnt know when or if they’d appear at all and keep making respectable professional players in a reliable way. And instead of wishing from the star that a superstar would be born from the academy, which is not reliable at all, the steady profits from the academy are used to invest on highly rated young players such as Camavinga, Valverde, Bellingham, or Vini. And all of a sudden they now got the young Superstars in the team even without the label “born and raised in Real Madrid academy.”

@@Long_DoooGif by “realistic” you mean easier to achieve, than yes its easier to become a mediocre player than a great one (obviously) but i dont think that makes it better in any way (it is a matter of opinion tho). I think a young player would much rather take the gamble of becoming a great player than a decent one so i respect that approach a lot more. And finance should not be the measure of success of an academy you’re acting as if barca’s financial crisis is down to their academy when it has nothing to do with it or as if real madrid’s academy is their “main” source of income or something when its not, and is just one of many sources. And again are you confusing Barca with Athletic club or something? Barca have never had to “rely” on the academy, you could say they used it a bit more because of their recent finances but they’ve still bought many players as well. The difference between Barca and Madrid is that Barca can do both, bring in great players while also producing them. You talk about players “not knowing when or if they’ll get into the first team” or barca relying on “could be”, why are you saying that as if its a bad thing? That’s the type of risk that comes with becoming a footballer even at an academy level, “will i make it?”. So why you acting like an academy having that expectation is a bad thing? And don’t know what you mean by “respectable professional players in a reliable way”? I’d say any player should be considered at academy or pro level should be considered a “respectable professional” but if you mean quality wise then you’re chatting absolute rubbish, because barca produce greater talents more frequently than real madrid. And it is “reliable” because they do it so frequently, and i hope you don’t consider “reliable” as producing a world class talent that breaks into the first team every year, because that is beyond stupid. They’re not “wishing upon a star” you dolt, they’re producing talent all the time at their academy and it is reliable because they do it so regularly. Again are you confusing Barca with Athletic club? And like i said Barca do both they produce talents like Gavi, Balde and Lamine Yamal while also buying talent like Frenkie de jong, Pedri, Araujo and even with real madrid buying every brazilian with a droplet of hype they’ve signed one of if not the biggest talent in brasil in Vitor Roque. So I’d say barca and their academy are doing pretty good.

If they are to be a superstar, their playing environment in lower ranked team where they can get plenty of opportunities to play will only help them more in their progress rather than being a sub in the first team without too much playing team. Dani Carvajal didnt have a problem to flourish as the best RB in the world during his prime days even when he didnt debuted in Real Madrid’s first team.

It's simple, Real Madrid simply don't have a philosophy of play or a way of playing football. When you look at the club's history, the logic has always been to put the best players in the best conditions to win. For example, if the best players are more comfortable playing possession football like De Stephano Puskas Kopa, Real will play possession football if they are more comfortable playing more direct football like Ronaldo Di Maria Ozil Bale, Real will play more direct football. It's the fact of not being prisoners of a particular playing philosophy that has enabled Real to win all its Champions Leagues, unlike Barcelona or Ajax, who simply can't succeed at the highest level once their playing philosophy is obsolete. The consequence for a young player from the academy is that to be able to play in the first team, he simply has to be the best of all the players in his position, even the outsiders. Unlike Barcelona, where if you're better in the Barcelona system you'll be favoured over someone else, and you still have to learn the philosophy. A Pedri, for example, couldn't do well at Real because he doesn't have the physical dimension of a Camavinga or Modric when he was younger, but in Barcelona-style possession football he's more at ease developing his skills. So it's quite simple. And Real has already produced some great players in its academy, and I'm referring here to Real's Quinta Del Buitré with Emiliano Butragueno the only team in history of laliga to win five laliga in a row

Thats not how it works, such a stupid answer. Not having a set way of playing football doesn’t equal real madrid’s success. Look at Ac milan or Liverpool or bayern munich they don’t have a set play style and yet haven’t won as many as ucl as real madrid. Real madrid won so many beacuse they had the best players or for other reasons. Not because they don’t have a set play style. And barca aren’t prisoners to anything, this is their vision of how football should be played . And i don’t think any style of football becomes obsolete, especially the way barca play, because you can trace it back to ajax who dominated in the 70’s to cryuff who brought it to barca and was able to win the UCL with them in the 90’s and ajax were able to win another one that decade tok and the Barca dominated on an incredible scale in 2000s and 2010s, so how is it obsolete when its succeeded across 40 or so years? Even now with Pep at Manchester city has been able to dominate the premier league which many call the hardest league in the world. And they have reached the highest level of football winning the UCL and utterly destroying the team you claim is so superior due to their lack of a set play style, Real Madrid with that very Philosophy. So how is it obsolete? But you simply don’t have to be the best in your position because everyone at real madrid is not the best in their position. Is joselu or carvajal the best? Seriously? And these players in these systems and philosophies that you think are so inferior often become the best in their position such as KDB or halland or rodri at man city. I think Real madrid would kill for Pedri right now and Modric is not a physical player so him and pedri are the same in terms of physicality at the very least. And you having to go back to the 80’s to mention a real madrid academy is quite sad. As for barca academy graduates (don’t worry you don’t have to go back that far) A certain Lionel Messi just the player to win the most balon d’ors ever and in just the span of six years managed to win TWO trebles while real madrid in its entire history have yet to win one;)

As a Barcelona fan, i do prefer from a sporting perspective how our academy players are designed to be stars or play for our first team one day. But i do respect the hell out of Real Madrids way of handling their academy, it’s designed to create pros and make profit for the organization, not to develop players for their own team. I’m so jealous of how they sell so many young players with the low buy back clauses meanwhile Barca just sells players like Abde Ezzalzouli for like a couple million without a buyback clause. Barca needs to depend on the youth academy for the success of our team but i think we should adopt some of Madrids formula and also look to make profit especially with our finanical problems

CAP, La Fabrica does produce great - good players. Great topic but due to lack of great research it's just meh. Thinking Carvajal is not a world class RB is really concerning. He had one of the greatest Defensive and Offensive peaks we've seen for Backs in recent years. Injuries and apparently allergies got him f-up. Hakimi is another World Class player from the academy. If I had the chance to play at any academy it would be there. Even if you dont end up at Real Madrid spending years at La Fabrica sets you up to be good in any other league because of the very diverse training you get. Unlike teams like Ajax or Barcelona. They are tailored into molding players to play one type of system. Take them out of that system it becomes clear they cant cope.

City's EDS produces some really good players that look very promising people like Foden, Bobb, Lewis, Trafford, Tommy Doyle, James Mcatee and so on but its pretty rare for EDS graduates to actually stay in the City team with most of them being sold.
It has come to a lot of peoples attention that there are two main clauses in every players contract when they get sold that came from the EDS and that is a buy back and a sell on percentage.
Those are always in their, people like Lavia, Porro, Borges all reportaly have (had in lavias amd Porros case) buy back clauses and sell on percentage.
It seems that City have copied Real Madrids way as the EDS for City have racked in a lot of money for City over 100 million euros i think it was reported.
