Ultimately I'd say Zio as the best villain of all time, with Luca Blight a close second. I mean at least Luca is a known entity, he has a last name, obviously a family heritage somewhere. This boss is the ultimate rug-pull. He's built up throughout the game as the big, bad end boss. And it's not even him! You're barely halfway through the game. So along with killing off the main character (Really), and having a far worse threat than the presumed bad guy, this game was a true game changer. And well worth a play. Up there with Final Fantasy at it's best.
When I first played this, I really thought Zio was the final boss, it was my first RPG. The battle really felt climactic. You had to get a sacred weapon just to stand a chance (Props for it being a staff rather than the typical sword) and even then, you had to put everything you had into the battle and more. If you hadn't figured out the combo moves, you were going to get destroyed. Finally beating him only to discover that the game had only gotten started was incredible.
Imagine playing the 3 Phantasy Stars before this scene knowing how significant that face is - or playing this one for the first time oblivious to what he is
Only the first would be necessary for so much to see make a return, Nightmare in the mansion and the heavy-duty vehicles you needed, Lashiec, and then the Prophallus encounters
Isn't this the fight where he beats you no matter what you do? As you desperately cycle through every possible move to no avail, this music keeps pumping in the background like Freddy Krueger is slowly killing you
Without spoiling much: The first time you fight him it's a quick and unwinnable fight and there are some consequences as a result of your team rushing to fight him. There's a second fight where you're better equipped to handle him.
@@megalon84 and yes, better equipped, in exchange for Alys's life, because to win something valuable, first or generally, you have to lose something valuable and I mean every aspect of life.

Sephiroth was a Zio rip off. Change my mind. He burns towns to the groiund. Has a cult following. Obsessed with an otherworldy being. Goal was to kill everyone on the planet. Kills a beloved player character.
Everyone's talking about Zio, but they don't even mention former King LaShiec (Lassic), who uses this theme as well in this game. His AnotherGate attack hits all party members hard. His ThunderHalbert only hurts Wren most. Possession is a one-target sleep spell, which mostly fails (since most of the time the characters wake up after being cast on them in the same turn), and Reinforce... That's when you have to use the Psycho-Wand.
i play this as a child when my english still very quiet bad, i wanna quit playing knowing can only do 1 damage per turn.. then i accidentally "use"/not equip psycho wand so the zio barrier become neutralized and i can do full damage..
When I first played this, I rented it from Blockbuster. I didn't figure out why I couldn't beat him until studying one of the items carefully. I actually rented this THREE times and took the late fee just to level up my characters. By the time I figured out why he was undefeatable at first, I was blown by how leveling up wasn't enough. The game was so easy after that because the characters were over ten levels beyond what was needed to beat most other monsters.

@@AntonDasBomb First time I ever fought him I kinda just rushed in unprepared so my experience was quite a bit different 😅. I lost a few times before accepting the fact I would have to grind for a few levels and after that he was easy, but he still probably killed me more than any other boss in the game
Jesus this is so intense. Even though I've not gotten this far in my tries I can just feel the stress and precise movements and controls this battle brings out. Rare for song to give off such a feeling of pure frenzy but focused battle. Only other one I can think of is magus of chrono trigger fame
Shadow Zaron Lashiec was the one that cost me the most of all the bosses because the miserable son of a bitch, took me from 200 hp and when he got mad at 300 hp, where, in general, he lost one or two characters to really beat me, but in general, the first time it beats me: you have to be between 40 and 45 level because if you don't do shit; always made me sweat and pout the wretch.
lashiec mops the floor with zio.
Rune+2 Psy Shields or PsyShield+Laser Barrier (or was it Plasma) and you’ll be fine. And this is the only game, I think, you can double shield your mages
@@JoeyLamontagne I'll take your word for it. It's hard enough getting here for me. I'm no slump in this type of game but Phantasy Star is tough
@@zlushtamp423 yes, he's the hardest boss to beat. Hardest in the entire game.
@@JoeyLamontagne Think you can double emel/shield in Phantasy Star 2 as well. Never tried in 3.
Time to make Zio pay!
Hell yeah
i was stuck on this for song a long time back then. between zio and lassic sheesh..
lashiec is awesome
Kid me didn't realize I had to use the item that drained his shield. I tried wailing on him for so long, just doing 1hp at a time.
Man I just faced this boss today - the theatrics of it all was insane. I already haven't found another game quite like this
I loved battling Zio and Lashiec with only Rune when this music played
Kei Nanjo Lashiec was the one that cost me the most of all the bosses because the miserable son of a bitch, took me from 200 hp and when he got mad at 300 hp, where, in general, he lost one or two characters to really beat me, but in general, the first time it beats me: you have to be between 40 and 45 level because if you don't do shit; always made me sweat and pout the wretch
@@zlushtamp423 Yup try having one of the bugged cartrages where all the buff spells didn't work. It made his fight brutal.
@@zlushtamp423 Double Shield Rune usually caused his ThunderHalbrt attack to do only 1 damage, and AnotherGate barely doing more than 90 HP damage., as for Zio, the only to worry about was his regular attack, as everything was doing 1-7 damage
Zio and the cult was real business... This aggression will not stand!!!
Never played this game before, but this boss along with the music sounds like it would be a hard as fight!
Try it... one of the best 16 bit rpgs
@@arturasrikishi4909 I started playing it and man got my ass kicked in the 2nd cave area, I get like 1 shotted
@@arturasrikishi4909 THE best
@@ViralZen lol. Try buy equip better. The game is masterpiece!
Zio: Jotaro!
Jojo: ZIO!
One of the best boss themes ever!
Damn, the game kept selling boomerangs till the end to make you believe.
I KNOW RIGHT! I thought the game was over and then I get to travel to OTHER PLANETS?! God it was such a thrilling experience.
Great boss theme! I knew ish got real when Dark Falz materialized behind him. :D
Epic!
Imagine playing the 3 Phantasy Stars before this scene knowing how significant that face is - or playing this one for the first time oblivious to what he is
@@paulevgenidis2884 great point. Even if I knew nothing about Phantasy Star I would still would have thought I was in some ish. 😋
Only the first would be necessary for so much to see make a return, Nightmare in the mansion and the heavy-duty vehicles you needed, Lashiec, and then the Prophallus encounters
A truly great boss battle
And to think, when I first played the game in 1994, this was the final boss of the game. Boy was I mistaken.
alright you bastard its time to avenge alys!!!
最帥氣的BOSS...
As cool as he was, this guy didn't get enough screentime as a villain.
you gotta love the heavy synth use in this song. it reminds me of early 1970's synthesizer music from movies like "A Clockwork Orange."
Robert Parrott Lashiec mops the floor with zio.
@@megalon84 and yes, better equipped, in exchange for Alys's life, because to win something valuable, first or generally, you have to lose something valuable and I mean every aspect of life.
its a storyline mandated loss and yes you can't beat him without hacking (although if you do he does have the same HP as standard boss zio) sadly no easter egg like PS3 has when you do something your not ment to do just continues with the story as if you lost.
This particular screenshot's from the rematch. Check the party members.
Sephiroth was a Zio rip off. Change my mind.
He burns towns to the groiund.
Has a cult following.
Obsessed with an otherworldy being.
Goal was to kill everyone on the planet.
Kills a beloved player character.
FF7 was crap. And Sephiroth is one of the most overrated boss
BEST BOSS SONG EVER!!!
i play this as a child when my english still very quiet bad, i wanna quit playing knowing can only do 1 damage per turn..
then i accidentally "use"/not equip psycho wand so the zio barrier become neutralized and i can do full damage..
Damn lol.
Still my all time fav game :D
Failed magicians and failed artists can be very dangerous
The PS4 soundtrack was both scary and fantastic.
Amazing theme!
Nightmare = Saccubus of Phantasy star 1
Hardest boss in the game. I remember needing to grind alot to be able to defeat him.
@@richardwieder885 Lashiec was the one that cost me the most of all the bosses because the miserable son of a bitch, took me from 200 hp and when he got mad at 300 hp, where, in general, he lost one or two characters to really beat me, but in general, the first time it beats me: you have to be between 40 and 45 level because if you don't do shit; always made me sweat and pout the wretch.

And here little me thought Zio was the final boss
Well you had already been to all the towns and stuff.
And I never taught to see Lashiec again since his battle in PS1 lol that was a hell of a surprise and i taught the boss at the Air( space ) Castle was gonna be some1 else
with Rune in the party, its payback time!
Grinds sandworms until I get grand cross against zio
*ZIO:* I won't let you escape this time! Oh, reverent one! Lend me power!
It was weird defeating Zio and realizing you were only like 5% done with the game.
Literally so glad I beat this dude on my first attempt
BLACKAXE900 and lashiec?
Zlush Tamp yeah he was a lot easier, mostly bc I was farming heaps when I got to the later parts in the game, I wasn’t really expecting Zio lol
@@ThaGoldMaster you wanted to say that it was not much easier because to beat zio you had to be between level 20 and level 23, instead to beat lashiec, you had to be between level 40 and level 45 "there is a big difference, between The one and the other"
Zlush Tamp I didn’t farm much before I fought zio, i only farmed a little bit before killing Juza and even he was kinda hard but I grinded literally every single enemy after that point so I was pretty OP making Lasheic way easier to handle.
@@ThaGoldMaster ok ;)
why is zio such a minor character he could have been a cool final boss
i love it
this games still amazing. One of the best games ever made especially if you add the workshop mod on steam for updated dialogue adding to the back stories of Rune/Zio
Try Komrade's Purgatory Mode ROM hack of this game. The gods will be *laughing* at your misfortune, I bet you.
Thanks.
Kicks Final fantasy in the crouch making it Final :D
I agree.
it didn't turn out that way, but i wish Phantasy Star could have kept on par with Final Fantasy - this game was the peak of Phantasy Star - maybe Christian Whitehead of Sonic Mania fame can come and make one for us
