There’s always something new to do and always a new restaurants to try😊.We have lived in the NYS suburbs for decades and owned a house with acre of land and almost 4000 square footage . We don’t missed the space that we have and the upkeep that goes with it. Our place now in Brooklyn is enough for the both of us with extra rooms for our adult children to visit. I think our move here is the right time for us as we currently can afford and enjoy what the city has to offer 😊

I started out in a tiny apt from the Bronx where I am from. Moved in Manhattan. It seems some people coming out of school want an upscale place immediately. My suggestion start out slow. Nothing wrong with living in a small place no need to impress people. Great video and advice thumbs up.
Once again you covered so much in a short amount of time .In 1982,I was 22 living in Ct, and and I was visiting a good friend who had moved NYC/Manhatten .He had told me he was having some financial troubles and could only find a run-down apartment. How bad could it be? I still visited and the walls ,ceilings were falling down ,the floors were cracked with holes in them. It probably was dirty. The shower was broken ,but the toilet worked .He had to sleep on the floor and so did I.I think i only stayed for one night. Soon thereafter he found a 1-bedroom in the park slope in Brooklyn.
I'm just 17 but I really want to move to New York, I live in Sri Lanka which is currently bankrupt so what you are doing will really help me get that head start
Many older people who move to NYC I have spoken to are former New Yorkers who left for the Southern States and moved back. The top three reasons are#1- You do not need a car #2- Medical Care access and reputation of NYP, NYU ect #3 Low cost Cultural events that offset the rent and most importantly #4 POLITICS. Many move back and if you read the news its completely understandable .I will be one of them in 2023 and I think there will be a surge.

My son lived here in Manhattan for 8 years. He loved all his experiences and work routines. He accepted the expensive reality of living, renting, shopping, bills , travel and entertainment. He relocated to California 3 years ago and now lives in Beverly Hills. Ambition and drive took him there and he now has his own business. My son is from Leyland in Lancashire UK. Yes. He made it!

I live in Brooklyn (near Manhattan) and find it very easy and quick to take the trains to Long Island City, Astoria, and Jackson Heights (all in Queens). Great video! I’m an old native Brooklynite and secures a rent-stabilized apartment before most of your viewers were born. I hate it that rents are so ridiculously high.

I lived in NYC for almost 9 years and only ever lived in Brooklyn. We looked at apartments in Harlem and they were beautiful (and HUGE!), but they were far from the subway. I loved being able to walk just about everywhere I needed to and along the way were loads of shops and restaurants (some good, some not so good). I really miss living in the city and can't wait to move back.
Great video. Never trust a broker anywhere haha. It's so true about moving to an area you like, even if it means a smaller place. You're going to hopefully be enjoying your area, not sitting inside all the time! I have always preferred Brooklyn over Manhattan, and Park Slope is a great area!
Pro tip, born and raised in sheepshead bay, brooklyn. Moved to Toms River, NJ in 2019 when my kid was born. Look for an older building built in the 50’s-70’s especially in queens and brooklyn, you’ll find bigger apartments cheaper in some parts of the city than trendy neighborhoods. Sheepshead bay takes 45 minutes on the Q train to get into manhattan. 3 bedrooms go for around $2500-3000 a month. My one bedroom was huge.
Sheepshead Bay is far from Manhattan. Depending where in Manhattan it can take as long as 90 minutes with a combination of bus and subway. In that case, someone could look into the scenic Hudson Valley as an alternative if they want affordability while working in the city.
You're right about how easy it is to make friends there. Im very introverted but on my first solo trip when I went to NYC I met a Kenyan Ambassador, someone from Istanbul, many local homeless, locals from all the boroughs, and even random food truck owners who would ask for a drag off my blunt as I'm going by. I never really went there to meet new people but it just sort of happens and those one off conversations you have with those you meet are truly one of the special things you would only get in places a dense as NYC

Eh I mean most people just default to Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn but like there are other boroughs in nyc that are cheaper and is a good mix of urban and residential
transportation: Don't judge how far away places are based on the map. Is there an express subway or two? How far do you have to walk to the nearest public transport and how often does it run? If you want to keep a car, will you be able to park it where you're going? Will there by traffic jams? I find the express subway lines are faster than cars or buses. I deliberately chose an apartment near two express lines because at the time I worked in several different places and I wanted to get everywhere as fast as possible. ymmv.
As a former real estate agent in NYC it irks me how some of the agents put the wrong address even street in the apartment listing. Many also post the wrong photos. Thankfully in neighborhoods that I Teresa me I know the buildings, floorplans and even architectural details where I can decipher what the unit really is. Another issue are coop listings. Very rarely is the monthly maintenance fee posted. When I sold coops I always posted it in the listing. Good luck to you and your wife with the baby!

Always work with more than one broker. I would start by browsing apartments on Streeteasy and make a list of ones to see. They are all listed with brokers so arrange to see each with that broker. You get to try out different brokers and keep working with the ones you like and they keep showing you apartments. See as many as you can so you get a feel for what's possible in your price range and what neighborhood or amenities you want or can afford. I see no reason to go to an open house. Another option is find a roommate who is already in a location or building you like. Once you're in the building you can hear about other apts opening up and the landlord knows you. I got into a nice building that way and been here 9 years.

you may never be too old but if you're handicapped think again. I was born in NYC and lived there until I retired. I would love to go back home (to Bklyn) but not when I cant access subways and stairs and restaurants that aren't accessible.
Definitely a massive black eye on the MTA that most stations don't have elevators or are accessible. I happily live close to Contento, a restaurant made for accessibility, but it's such a rarity in regards to restaurants.

Hi thanks for this video I just want to share my thoughts for a second. I'm a 21 year old film student from Chicago and I want to leave! I know I want to leave but I'm not sure where. I used to want to live in LA but the high amount of homelessness and rent prices turned me off. I've also heard the energy and people there are just dark and evil. I've always hated the idea of living in New York because to me it just seemed like a worse version of Chicago. We already have a lot of crime, people, snow and rats and I feel like that would just be doubled in New York but I'm about to graduate and I need a plan and a job and I feel like New York could give me that. I'm starting to realize that I probably have to settle in a small apartment with roomates and rats if I want to follow my dreams. I could do that in LA or NY but I don't know. I'll see where I can score a job after I graduate and go from there. Can anyone give me advice?
Was in nyc a few months ago, and I have to say ,I didn’t feel safe , Been there many times , but mental health is sky high and so is shoplifting, and rats , break my heart to say this but I will not put my family in danger by returning,New York needs to get a grip , so we decided to go to Chicago instead, Chicago was great ,only complaint was the hotel ripped us off it was the Marriott,forWi-Fi and a bottle of water

Congratulations on the baby!! I'm a native Bronxite still residing there... I have to say it's even easier to get into Manhattan from where I live (Yankee Stadium) than it is for my friends who live in Brooklyn (Park Slope). Yet very rarely does anyone recommend or even understand living in the Bronx. It's strange the stigma this borough still has hanging over it after so many years. People will recommend even Queens over the Bronx, even though commuting from Queens into Manhattan can be a nightmare. Nowadays, though, the top place everyone wants to tell folks to move to is Brooklyn. Don't get me wrong, I do love Brooklyn. I may move there, too, soon. But I do find it funny how *scared people act about the Bronx. The rent is definitely cheaper here, though, so I guess we get the last laugh. 😀
Yes The Grand Concourse has big apts with sunken in living rooms. I am from Riverdale and 2023 will be the return year .Pelham Parkway is solid too and rents are still lower than Brooklyn.
To be fair the Bronx doesn’t have a lot of attractions that makes me want to leave and go over there. Besides Yankee Stadium, the zoo and Van Cortland and Pelham Park ….honestly what else is out there
@@edercortes1960 Hmmm… let me think. Well, Botanical Gardens and Little Italy (way better than Manhattan’s) are two additional things. The BX Museum of Art on the Grand Concourse is another great visit. We also have Mill Pond Park, a newly developed and eco-friendly waterfront behind what used to be the Terminal Market. And South Mott Haven (below the Major Deegan and bordered by Willis and 3rd Aves) has been turned into a hip and trendy nabe with converted lofts for artists and the like. They have cute cafes and latino-owned restaurants there now - including Chocobar Cortes where they make the most delicious hot chocolate! I’ve recently been taking dates to this Cuban restaurant opened up on the roof of the main post office on 149th and the Concourse - Zona de Cuba. Amazing food and fun atmosphere there! And finally you have City Island, still one of the best spots in all of NYC to eat the freshest and most delicious seafood, not to mention the scenic views!
I have a friend who lives in queens and we grew up together in Brooklyn and they are not helping her at all so new York is a lot better for younger people because they don't help seniors
how long do you think you can continue making lists of things? You can certainly branch out and do other vlogs that dont follow this linear path of a list of quick tips or whatever. maybe u can branch out now and start something more meaningful.

Living here and visiting aren't the same. Errands like laundry or groceries are a hassel. If you can survive renting and brokers here, it's a breeze in any other state. Don't move here broke‼️

Jon People should know that NYC is made up of the 5 Boroughs. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island. Most people outside NYC think is Manhattan. It's not. Manhattan is the most touristy place and expensive in NYC I go to Manhattan for the Rangers. Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree 🎄. Macys Herald Square. High Line. Museum of Natural History, Central Park. Brooklyn ( Sheepshead Bay) is where I live. Southern Brooklyn I would take on a heart beat. I grew up in Gravesend section of Brooklyn.
I moved to NYC in 2002. I enjoyed it, but the city took a big turn for the worse when Deblasio was in office. During the pandemic it became a hellish nightmare. I left 2 years ago, and would never go back. High crime, homeless drug addicts everywhere, high rent, high taxes, and gang graffiti everywhere. No thanks!
Well a 50 something doesn't move to New York if you don't have the money. No one that age wants roommates! You must have a great job to accomplish a decent place.Also everyone knows after one year the price will go up!
I come from a Big City where people are notoriously known for being nice and it took me years to find my friends. I can’t imagine what it would take to make friends in a city known for the coldness, callousness and self serving traits of its inhabitants.

as an outsider, it seems the best place to live is anywhere clean and safe with convenient access to get INTO Manhattan.

you may never be too old but if you're handicapped think again. I was born in NYC and lived there until I retired. I would love to go back home (to Bklyn) but not when I cant access subways and stairs and restaurants that aren't accessible.

Definitely a massive black eye on the MTA that most stations don't have elevators or are accessible. I happily live close to Contento, a restaurant made for accessibility, but it's such a rarity in regards to restaurants.

Hi thanks for this video I just want to share my thoughts for a second. I'm a 21 year old film student from Chicago and I want to leave! I know I want to leave but I'm not sure where. I used to want to live in LA but the high amount of homelessness and rent prices turned me off. I've also heard the energy and people there are just dark and evil. I've always hated the idea of living in New York because to me it just seemed like a worse version of Chicago. We already have a lot of crime, people, snow and rats and I feel like that would just be doubled in New York but I'm about to graduate and I need a plan and a job and I feel like New York could give me that. I'm starting to realize that I probably have to settle in a small apartment with roomates and rats if I want to follow my dreams. I could do that in LA or NY but I don't know. I'll see where I can score a job after I graduate and go from there. Can anyone give me advice?

Was in nyc a few months ago, and I have to say ,I didn’t feel safe , Been there many times , but mental health is sky high and so is shoplifting, and rats , break my heart to say this but I will not put my family in danger by returning,New York needs to get a grip , so we decided to go to Chicago instead, Chicago was great ,only complaint was the hotel ripped us off it was the Marriott,forWi-Fi and a bottle of water

Congratulations on the baby!! I'm a native Bronxite still residing there... I have to say it's even easier to get into Manhattan from where I live (Yankee Stadium) than it is for my friends who live in Brooklyn (Park Slope). Yet very rarely does anyone recommend or even understand living in the Bronx. It's strange the stigma this borough still has hanging over it after so many years. People will recommend even Queens over the Bronx, even though commuting from Queens into Manhattan can be a nightmare. Nowadays, though, the top place everyone wants to tell folks to move to is Brooklyn. Don't get me wrong, I do love Brooklyn. I may move there, too, soon. But I do find it funny how *scared people act about the Bronx. The rent is definitely cheaper here, though, so I guess we get the last laugh. 😀

Yes The Grand Concourse has big apts with sunken in living rooms. I am from Riverdale and 2023 will be the return year .Pelham Parkway is solid too and rents are still lower than Brooklyn.
To be fair the Bronx doesn’t have a lot of attractions that makes me want to leave and go over there. Besides Yankee Stadium, the zoo and Van Cortland and Pelham Park ….honestly what else is out there
@@edercortes1960 Hmmm… let me think. Well, Botanical Gardens and Little Italy (way better than Manhattan’s) are two additional things. The BX Museum of Art on the Grand Concourse is another great visit. We also have Mill Pond Park, a newly developed and eco-friendly waterfront behind what used to be the Terminal Market. And South Mott Haven (below the Major Deegan and bordered by Willis and 3rd Aves) has been turned into a hip and trendy nabe with converted lofts for artists and the like. They have cute cafes and latino-owned restaurants there now - including Chocobar Cortes where they make the most delicious hot chocolate! I’ve recently been taking dates to this Cuban restaurant opened up on the roof of the main post office on 149th and the Concourse - Zona de Cuba. Amazing food and fun atmosphere there! And finally you have City Island, still one of the best spots in all of NYC to eat the freshest and most delicious seafood, not to mention the scenic views!
I have a friend who lives in queens and we grew up together in Brooklyn and they are not helping her at all so new York is a lot better for younger people because they don't help seniors
how long do you think you can continue making lists of things? You can certainly branch out and do other vlogs that dont follow this linear path of a list of quick tips or whatever. maybe u can branch out now and start something more meaningful.

Living here and visiting aren't the same. Errands like laundry or groceries are a hassel. If you can survive renting and brokers here, it's a breeze in any other state. Don't move here broke‼️

People should know that NYC is made up of the 5 Boroughs. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island. Most people outside NYC think is Manhattan. It's not. Manhattan is the most touristy place and expensive in NYC I go to Manhattan for the Rangers.

Brooklyn ( Sheepshead Bay) is where I live. Southern Brooklyn I would take on a heart beat. I grew up in Gravesend section of Brooklyn.
I moved to NYC in 2002. I enjoyed it, but the city took a big turn for the worse when Deblasio was in office. During the pandemic it became a hellish nightmare. I left 2 years ago, and would never go back. High crime, homeless drug addicts everywhere, high rent, high taxes, and gang graffiti everywhere. No thanks!
Well a 50 something doesn't move to New York if you don't have the money. No one that age wants roommates! You must have a great job to accomplish a decent place.Also everyone knows after one year the price will go up!
