I was in NYC for Halloween and stayed at the Leo house. Great area, loved Chelsea. We were walking distance from the highline and Chelsea market. Some great spots for relaxed dining, bars and fantastic little bakeries. On the week we were there they were filming the sex and the city reboot "And just like that" and "the blacklist."
Another good tourist tip: if you're flying into JFK and going to midtown look at LIRR as an option instead of the E train. Off peak it's $5, large comfortable seats, luggage rack overhead, quiet, and only 20 minutes to Penn Station. Far more relaxing and quicker than the subway.
Jon during my last visit to New York I blended in with the locals to avoid being targeted by tourist scammers and it worked ! This is an awesome video that you uploaded.
I just visited in October after watching tons of your videos. One of my favorite experiences was taking a ferry, and I'm not talking about the Staten Island ferry. My second day I decided to go see the Empire State Building and as I was planning my day from Brooklyn, I discovered the ferry service from pier 11. I took the subway to WTC and walked to pier 11 and took the ferry for $4 to 34th st. The views from the boat are amazing, you go right under the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. You can even get snacks and beer on the ferry if you choose.
My favorite NYC bagel spot “hack” is to place my order online at my hotel, take a leisurely stroll over to the bagel spot, skip the line, walk right up to the counter and pick up my order. So easy and no waiting in line!
Make dinner, bar, brunch, breakfast, reservations before you get there. My wife and I were there this past weekend and we made reservations a month before. We were able to go everywhere we wanted to go. Steak dinner, drinks. Also, call and ask what time the place might have live music. There were two places that he got there and the band was playing their last song for the day. And yes!!! Check the forecast. We had rain once day, 75 the next, and cold the day after. Love your channel!!
One point for my trip in June was to bring comfortable footwear. Even if you're taking the subway everywhere you'll still do a lot of walking around the different neighborhoods and if your shoes are uncomfortable, you're going to be miserable.
I'm here in NYC right now! I have had such an amazing time seeing a lot of places thanks to your tips. Thank you so much for enabling me to have a memorable experience. Also that hotel fee is 100% true. Booked a 3 night stay at the New Yorker and they got me with the extra fees out of nowhere.
Hi Jon! Just got back from my week long vacation in NYC and it was a blast thanks to all the tips from your videos and those from Tea and Sarah. Keep on the good work!😊
The one thing I'll disagree with is the matinee thing! As a someone who grew up in the surrounding NYC area going to shows all the time, (just graduated with a BFA in theatre recently as well) the nighttime shows are gonna be much higher energy from not only the crowd, but the performers. As a stage actor myself having to do a two show day is tough, and the matinee can be hard to get your energy up for. I've also noticed that the crowds at matinees are often old people and young children, leading to a weird audience energy a lot of the time.
One other place to mention or maybe visit is the upper west side ymca or upper east side ymca both amazing places to stay very cheap! They have rooms from simple shared bathrooms to rooms with bathroom inside room and prices are insanely cheap and you get use of the full ymca faculties while staying. Clean friendly and affordable an in good areas especially the one located just down the block from Columbus circle! It’s literally in front of Central Park. Sesame Street!
Always such good videos! Everything is 100% legit. We research and binge watch your videos before trips to the city and everything we have ever went to participated in or purchased has always been exactly as you have shown or stated. You have literally saved us hours and 100s of dollars on our trips over the past 5 years! People laugh at us in disbelief when we tell them that the two of us travel to the city 10hours stay for 4 or 5 days eat out every meal go to atleast one show and visit tons of attractions and only spend around $1200 for everything!
"Check hourly forecast." 🔥🔥🔥 Sage like advice! My wife and I visited for Valentine’s Day waaaaay before smart phones were doing their thing, thought we packed adequately (Chicago residents) it ended up be a record low for NYC. 🤣🤦🏿 So cold they cut carriage rides short in Central Park. Those poor horses. 🤣🥺
Being vegan, I have a list of vegan restaurants in NYC and update it before my visit. I also plan in advance what attractions I want to see during my stay in NYC. For example, during my last visit, I went to the Brooklyn Museum of Art to see the Andy Warhol exhibition.
I checked the weather for the next 10 days and will do so everyday until I leave home, packing my regular clothes, I only wear I love NY shirts around my house. Will def be hanging in Soho, Village and Chelsea
Stayed in leo house last year. Going back again this year, they serve a hot breakfast each morning, except Sunday. And its close to the highline and Chelsea market. Great spot!
Just got back from NY. Thanks to your videos we where able to do a lot in 5 days. Also we got engaged on Ascend on top of the Summit 🔥🔥 Keep up the great work John!
Hey, Jon! Thank you so much! I always enjoy watching your videos. Hope you, Adriana and the baby are doing great! Lots of love from La Plata, Argentina! 🥰
Try the pod hotel at 42nd and ninth especially if you’re looking for affordable accommodations in about the most central location in all of New York City with the Port Authority bus terminal/subway station and Times Square just a few blocks away. The rooms are very narrow and that’s because they are based on the Japanese concept of pods. I stay in the rooms with bunkbeds, but you still get the hotel experience and bathroom/shower is great.. Very clean, friendly staff, tiki bar etc. The best part: directly across the street is the Manhattan parking garage which I always use and is very safe and where I’ve never had a problem. Pod customers Can get their receipts stamped, and they are good at the Manhattan parking deck I believe half off. Can’t beat it!
The MTA has an app that can help you with the subway. I don’t have a problem blending in when I visit. I blend in too well that people keep coming up to me asking directions and I don’t always know the answer! 😂
Two things about NYC that one needs to factor in (and I say this living an hour away)- Wind and going in and out. The gust of wind that is a mild factor in, say, Brooklyn, might not be felt by the wall of buildings in Manhattan- BUT then you turn a corner into a wind tunnel. Likewise, what's a good outfit for walking in the cold might be a bad outfit once you're inside. So, say, if your Day is to go to one cafe for lunch, do Summit, walk around, go into another place for dinner, etc...think of an outfit you can customize for cold outdoors and warm indoors. (In my case, I learned that my insulated hoodie fits easily in my backpack, but a leather jacket would not)
I agree. Don’t under estimate the weather. The NYC environment is in an arguably harsh northern climate. It looks deceptive but there’s a strong wilderness factor too.
Queens is awesome. Great food, and fantastic museums like the Noguchi or the Museum of the Moving Image. Probably my favorite borough outside of Manhattan.
If you want park your car… park it on Brooklyn or Queens on the street for free. I recommend by the McCarren park on Greenpoint. Close to subway station. Of course only if you are in NYC on one day/night
on one my NYC vacations i stayed at the Sleep Inn Long Island City. this gives you decent sized room. make a text list of the subway lines you need per trip. then you can access it while offline. plan by area. then you see more in one day.
This video is perfect timing for me as I'm searching for accomodation for my first ever visit to NY in January, so excited! Many thanks for your video :)
You can still get flavored wraps and not get charged extra for them! Some places might charge you an insane amount for some shitty wraps near midtown but if you go a bit more south in the day it you can find whatever wrap you want. Brooklyn also had the best weed from what I can understand but I get told the Bronx is a contender
In 2012 i went to Moscow on vacation. I had some friends living there,so i had a place to stay in the city. In those days i used to travel with a backpack filled with t-shirts and jeans, nothing fancy. L think my friends tried to cause a good impression on my visit to Russia, and invited me to go to a classical music concert at some Moscow Theater. All i had in my backpack was cheap clothes. That afternoon i had to rush to a mall called GUM in downtow Moscow to buy a necktie and a dress shirt. It was not cheap, not even in 2012. I was bigger than my friends, none of their suits would have fitted me those days. My tip to you boys, always pack a nice tie and a decent shirt with your travel stuff .
I did the Jane…..😂😂😂 saw a lady in the coed bathroom empty a large smelly bucket in one of the toilets….budgets were tight so and the room was a literal closet size 😂😂 humble beginnings for my artist self
I came back from NYC 10 days ago. I made a mistake about clothing in New York. There was something like +55 up to +72 fahrenheit and I did some research about New York city weather between October and November and Google told me that in NYC have a cold weather during that season. So I took lot of clothes with me including a coat and I only used jeans and T-shirt.....lol :D
Plan, plan, seek for advice or get hold of Here Be Barr's Tour Guide tools. As the city itself is wonderful it will make ur stay there better if u are prepared. Among all other cities I've visited, only NYC I've visited twice .... and planning to come back again sooner.
As much as I want to go to an observation deck, especially the nee one that opened near grand central station, I Think I'll wait until after Winter for that when there will be better weather for going to the observation decks and taking pictures! Plus thanks for suggesting Revel as an option for ridesharing!
As usual Jon another really well put together video with lots of good advice for people like me. Very practical and easy to follow ideas. Thanks again for the quality content.
I really enjoy your videos , I lived in NYC when I was a teenager in the 80s and I love this city same as you do . I was wondering if you will ever do a video about Chinatown, not just the cheap but quality, it's hard to pick and choose with so many restaurants. Also it will be nice a video of the best dive bars in New York! Thank you for the great work 👍
OMNY in subways and buses makes commuting way better, but here's the tea ☕: if you're a tourist taking the AirTrain or the Roosevelt Island Tramway, you still gotta buy a MetroCard 🙄
Coming in three weeks. Smart moves I made. Rather than stay in Manhattan. I booked a hotel in LIC. Easy walk to the subway, puts me in Times Square or Grand Central in 15 mins. Much cheaper rates and low crime levels. Booked early just before Covid restrictions were lifted. Saved a fortune. Other smart moves, gave myself the last several months to work out a daily itinerary (if I don't stick to it exactly, that's fine, it's just a guide) worked out smart where to go and how to maximise time seeing and doing. So I am not back and forth all day missing out. Things I do are in a line basically. One after the other, smart and efficient. Little things like the best affordable breakfast places and so forth. Sure, I'll also just try pot luck but I'm doing my best to take the risk and disappointment out of the trip. Used my time now to plan and find the deals and things I want to see and do, how to do it rather than wasting time when there. Every second is precious so I won't be wasting time unless it's enjoying the moment or just going off track to experience the city. Which is not wasting time at all! Scratching my head in my phone trying to work out where I am and what to do, that's wasting time. Not to mention making me a target. I paid up front for a town car to pick me up at the airport and get me fast to the hotel. Again booked in advance so very reasonably priced. So I actually get a useful half day out of my travel day to NYC in the city. Yes the subway or bus would have been cheaper but with a roller bag, shoulder bag and backpack, that's a hassle.
We were just there last weekend over Veterans Day. I used ParkWhiz to get us covered valet parking in Harlem from Thursday night to Sunday morning for about $45.
Yessss man, landed today in NYC, used city mapper as a quide it is the best app I can tell, you can choose the place and it guides you all the way ! We used OMNY as well... and will try at least one of your tips for halal food or lunch in Midtown !
Not only can NYC be very cold in winter, it can be oppressively hot in summer...August being the worst month. Summer temps of near 100 degrees are common, and a person can get dehydrated or afflicted with heat exhaustion very easily.
Kinda related to point 1, I've never paid for lodging in NYC (or any other city in the last 5 years) bc of credit card rewards. I know it's outside your space, but guys like Ask Sebby or Credit Shifu can guide people to doing it. It has totally helped me enjoy my last two NYC trips more than my first one a long time ago at an AirBNB. There's a huge difference when you're already in a prime location, or have the option to order room service... and none of it is coming out of pocket. Actually, maybe I should start a consulting gig and e-mail you one of these days. I've always figured business owners with an affinity for travel would be the best clients; and Here Be Barr is like exactly that. (I wouldn't charge you anything since I love your channel, and I need the practice, lol).
Well, I just checked this "Leo House" hotel, and even though on their website they list that Standard Private Room with Full Bathroom Starts from 118$, the actual price when you try to book it for example for September is 219$ - which isn't actually cheap.
Just what I need-- advice to hurry up when ordering at a bagel or pizza place. As if I wanted to be there or talk to people or get attention. I'm hungry why couldn't I use an app and stay in, well there's a delivery person if it's hot food then with groceries I need a chef or cook it myself.
Good tips. NYC is crammed with secrets: parks only locals visit, killer views, an invisible sculpture in Times Square, personalities, $2.75 trip in and out from JFK, and on and on…
Airbnb and other similar services can be help with one’s budget, also. But make sure you turn on the Free Cancellation filter-there are places that will keep certain fees should you cancel for whatever reason-even you cancel months in advance. Always read the cancellation policy, too. It’s understandable if the host keeps a certain amount if you cancel 48 hours or less prior to your planned stay-they could have rented out to someone else with more advanced warning. But, losing $36 or so when you needed to cancel the trip you were going to take in May five months in advance is a little ridiculous

Checking the hotel bill is great advice that transcends NYC. And you're correct in saying you thought Las Vegas was bad about resort fees.
One point for my trip in June was to bring comfortable footwear. Even if you're taking the subway everywhere you'll still do a lot of walking around the different neighborhoods and if your shoes are uncomfortable, you're going to be miserable.

(I wouldn't charge you anything since I love your channel, and I need the practice, lol).
I already follow Sarah Funky but the Urbsn Caffiene channel is new to me so I will follow it now 👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Well, I just checked this "Leo House" hotel, and even though on their website they list that Standard Private Room with Full Bathroom Starts from 118$, the actual price when you try to book it for example for September is 219$ - which isn't actually cheap.
Awesome good ideas 🤙🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
Midtown does feel pretty empty at night and I am all for it. Never expected midtown near Times to be empty and it was very creepy. I loved it though
Actually got a room at the New Yorker for 100 bucks a night in February. So I’ll call that a good deal 👍🏻
Went to ny mid october a few years ago, it was 32 c 😅 i came from 15c and did not expect that high do had to buy a few tops and sunscreen
I want to visit West Highway 😀 I hear around 5pm weekdays is good time to visit 😂
Lmao 🤣
great video
As an over-planning over-thinker, I think planning ahead for the subway is way too overwhelming and it’s much easier to navigate it in person.
Coming from England to vist new york
Great channel wuthvanother great video
Just what I need-- advice to hurry up when ordering at a bagel or pizza place. As if I wanted to be there or talk to people or get attention. I'm hungry why couldn't I use an app and stay in, well there's a delivery person if it's hot food then with groceries I need a chef or cook it myself.
Google maps works great, Omny too.
Being in NYC IS enough!
I agree. On my last trip to NYC, I sat for 4 hours in a coffee shop and loved it
I'm going there next month 😎
How is the weather gonna be next week, any idea? Will it rain? Will it be cold? Do we need light jackets? Plz suggest.
Glad I watched till the end, I was looking for some luggage storage ideas. Do you recommend any others besides Bounce?
Locals, tourist hate you when there's a line and you start having a chat to your friend behind the counter at the bodega or the barman.
Hi Jon! What's your suggestion on avoiding those added prices when booking a hotel in NYC?
Good one ☝🏻
