- Forget Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. The true pioneers of Dutch football are HVV Den Haag.
I visited their stadium in the Hague to learn more about the former Dutch champions.

The Dutch couldn''t even make a celebratory photo of the championship winning team without bicycles in the background.
I noticed that too :) Even in 1906 they already loved their bicycles
@@ohjajohh How else would they get to club?
I'm a Scot living in the Netherlands for 40yrs and I've never heard of this team and its history 😮so thanks and I will visit them soon 😊
Great video mate. Being Dutch and living in Scotland following non-league here (ST holder at Lochee United), I'm mainly subscribed to your channel for Scottish lower/non-league content. But having grown up not far from The Hague it was great to see this too.
@martenkars6915 tweet tweet fur the Lochee Fleet 😂
Good old Lochee Utd.
video hit me hard just because i live in the hague
Brilliant.
The committee gentleman (name?) since 1963; wow! Respect to him.
Phil came across really well and all the best to the club’s future.
I used to play for HVV’s local rivals (Graaf Willem VAC) but it’s so cool to see them here on this channel
Then you also know VUC? That's where i played. Also a great history.
@@jeffrey1269 ja man, mooie oude tribune daar ook 👌🏻
Faka Bart, dat is lang geleden!
Nice video Sam! Great to see you going to my city Den Haag! I am an ADO Den Haag supporter and there is a lot of football history in The Hague but sadly all the succes is more than 40 years ago. There are also 3 more amateur clubs in The Hague with big history. Those are HBS(3 league titles, 2 cups and 5 lost cup finals), their neighbours Quick(1 league title and 4 cups) and VUC(1 cup and 1 lost final).
Hi Sam,
I was lucky enough to work in the Netherlands in the mid 00s.
What a place! Your brilliant vlog was so Dutch, it brought back loads of great Duch memories!!
Cheers!
Professional footbal was outlawed by the KNVB (FA) until 1954. The Netherlands might sometimes look pretty similar to England, we have a huge tradition and history of associations and clubs run by volunteers just for fun or the general bettering of things, including sports clubs. "Paid footbal" as would be the direct translation was long seen as corrupting the beautiful game (in hindsight, were they wrong?) and players who went to play in Italy or Spain for money have been suspended by the KNVB for the national team.
It was actually a charity game organized by Dutch professionals playing in other countries to raise money for the victims of the North Sea Flood of 1935 that triggered the change. People recognized that the level of the pro's was much higher and to keep up internationally it had to change. Clubs were already paying players secretely and even doing transfers though.
Great video, seems like a really lovely club and I didn't know the story at all. So just an addition because you seemed to assume that still being amateurs was an open matter to market forces and entreprise, it wasn't at all.
As Dutch teenager, i love this video! I played against this club this year so its fun to see!
The older chap (Frank) speaks remarkably good English, he puts many indigenous Brits to shame.
I’m an Aussie who knows multiple Dutch people and I can say from my own experiences that they speak better English than many people do in the English speaking world
They all put us to shame , Dutch ,Germans , Scandis.....not so much Latin based languages . Tell us why , experts , please .
The Netherlands holds the record for having the most English speakers per capita of any country that does not have English as the standard language. I've lived there for 33 years (English expat) and I can't remember ever meeting a Dutch person who doesn't speak it. I speak fluent Dutch, but many expats don't even bother learning it. In fact, it can be hard to learn Dutch because as soon as they hear a foreign accent, they automatically switch to English.
ps. Hup AZ Alkmaar, hup!!
@@normanpearson8753 I'll give it a go. Not saying I'm an "expert" but I did study languages and I'm a bit of a polyglot.
Western popular culture, both in music and film, is predominantly in English. This is the direct result of the British Empire running the world for a couple of centuries, and especially being the founding source for American culture. Europeans are surrounded by English and hear it every day on TV, radio and cinema.
In the UK, turn on the TV and you only ever hear English, so you don't become familiar with the sound of any other language.
English is a Germanic language has more in common with languages spoken in Protestant Northern European countries. Also, UK culture is much more Germanic than it is Mediterranean.
I'm English but live in the Netherlands and speak Dutch every day. In the Netherlands they have always broadcast British children's TV shows with Dutch subtitles. In Germany, they have the same shows, but dubbed into German. This is why Dutch kids learn English much quicker than German kids. The farther south you go in Europe, the less likely you are to come across English in your day-to-day life.
The Romance languages (the actual name for "Latin based" languages) and people, are resistant to Anglicisation in a way that their Northern neighbours are not.
The Dutch love putting English words in a sentence, whereas in France, they actually legislate AGAINST the use of English in the news, if there is an equivalent French word already.
That hasn't stopped French people from looking forward to "Le weekend", and young French people hardly ever use "la fin de semaine" when planning a Friday night out. Oddly, in French speaking Canada, they do still prefer la fin de semaine, but that is probably because they are fighting to keep French alive in a country in which they are the minority.
Hope that helped.
@@emdiar6588 Very well put , thanks from me,,,,and tout le monde else !
How's it going, Sam? Great to see another visit to the Netherlands, a country with great history in the sport. This video Intrigued me learning of the 'true pioneers'.
Thanks mate yeah I'm all good thanks. Hope you are too.
HVV are a Dutch queen's park!
before the 70s holland was famous for clogs and windmills only then suddenly famous for unbelievable football teams
Hvv Den haag truly have had a fall from grace 😢
Den Haag is the name of the city, HVV Den Haag is only one of the teams from there. The current "top" team in the city is ADO Den Haag.
@@malcolmjcullen sorry I change it
I love Dutch football so to see you make a video of Den Haag is amazing :)
Den Haag is not the name of the football team, it's HVV. Den Haag is the city.
Great to see your presentation on such a historic team. Lots of folks seem to think of sports only in terms of the here and now. Forgetting the history takes a lot away from the game.
Great work.
Love vids like this! I am from the Netherlands and I didn’t even know that HVV won so many league titles in the past! Amazing vid mate!
Always good to hear that Steve McLaren clip.
Great video man. This is what I look for in football channels.
Only missing why they are where the are now
Well done! A great video. I do enjoy your club interviews and the histories of these wonderful clubs..
How amazing that HVV were a true sporting club, not just football but other sport including cricket 🏏
The first footballclubs in the Netherlands were combinations of football and cricketteams
@@ivo76this is true of a lot of English clubs too. Football in winter, cricket in summer. My club Tottenham Hotspur started as a cricket club. I am surprised to learn that cricket was played back then in Netherlands as I thought England just exported the game to our colonies!
Thanks for the video and so nice to see football history. I checked the internet: oldest football pitch in the world is at Sandygate (1860!, Hallam FC in Sheffield). Wow.
Some of the first clubs in The Netherlands: HFC 1879 rugby, football since 1883 (Haarlem), Hercules 1882 cricket, football since 1889 (Utrecht), HVV 1883 (The Hague), Concordia 1885 (Delft), Go Ahead 1886 (Wageningen) fused with Victoria (1889) to become Victoria in1903, Sparta 1888 (Rotterdam), and Vitesse 1892 (Arnhem). I played for Hercules (amateur) as a child and loved the history of the club. My kid recently played against HVV and I pointed out the buildings and history to him. So nice to see how they try to maintain their history.
What i find quite sad is you dont see the likes of Ajax, psv, Feyenoord contesting European cup finals anymore.
It seems like the big money clubs have a monopoly on those competitions.
I spend a lot of time in the Netherlands and I am always impressed with the standard of the facilities that lower league and youth teams enjoy. Such a contrast to grassroots in England. A little further up our pyramid, I follow my local semi professional team in the Southern Premier League. Some of the grounds and pitches at this level are an absolute disgrace..
Great video as always, and yet another source of footballing insight. I had never heard of HVV before.
yet another fascinating video Sam, well done
Great video, great channel. Up there with Stunt Peg for football.
This clip is fabulous, detail, history and passionate.
I heard of this before but never seen a reportage like this about the topic. Thank you, very interesting.
What a fantastic video Sam , was very interesting as I had never heard of them keep up the great work
Yessss finally! You came to my city and we have more in our history 😊
I live in The Hague and didn't know about this...thank you! I will take a wee bike ride to check it out. Any other Dutch videos planned???? I am going to Sparta Rotterdam V Volendam in 10 days at The Castle. Can't wait! Thanks for great content always. Come to OCaseys if you're ever in Den Haag again and I'll pour you a pint. Any plans on Carrow Road/The Nest video in Norwich??? Would love to see you do talk Canary video
It breaths history. Love this stuff. Keep it up.
Nice to see clubs that still play for enjoyment rather than the greedy ,win at all costs and fans are seen as ATM s attitude ,we see from premier league clubs these days
These are the kind of clubs that more money should come down the football pyramid to help out .
Very good video! Fun fact; although it is the oldest pitch currently still in use, the first game was played in Enschede, about 10 years before HVV started.
Last season I played for a different team SV Die Haghe against them and I am an international student here I didn't know much about teams I played against and my teammates told about HVV and their significance in Dutch football. It was really amazing playing against teams like this. Sadly, I do not live in the Hague anymore, hopefully in the future I will visit my old team as well as HVV 😃
this is where i used to play when i was younger! crazy to see a video about it, great job!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
I have not really heard about HVV Den Haag but I am extremely so sad to see this fallen giant to be struggling like when their rivals ADO Den Haag are doing alright in this season's Dutch second division but of course, the former are have won even titles and the latter with four titles, good friends!!!This is the most shocking ever in the footballing world for them to be the amateur league but I am fully hoping to see them bouncing back slowly but will take years to be in the Dutch top four divisions but still, just hope, good friends!!!LONG LIVE HVV DEN HAAG!!!🙏🏻
they need to introduce promotion into the second teir then.
Awesome story Sam! Love u seeing in the most beautiful country in the world 😉🇳🇱
What a fabulous and interesting vlog.
There's a bunch of these clubs like DWS in Europe in the late 60's and now they are like 8th tier, de Volewijckers who were champions and the phoenix club started in like the 11th tier and are still nothing
I love your videos and you always do a great job. I wish you would go back to Portugal and do a video on Casa Pia AC . They are the third Lisbon team atm in the top flight and have a very interesting history that goes back to 1890's. The club is named after a children's charity and was in the 5th division of Portuguese footy in 2007 returning to the first division in 2022 some 80 years since their last appearance in it. Crazy story, also current Sporting and potential Liverpool coach Ruben Amorim has a connection and short tenure with that club, technically.
Brilliant... i learnt a lot!
Nice to see Dunfermline local Andrew Carnegie make an appearance at 11:34 👍
HVV plays at 7th level nowadays. Dutch league system is a bit weird because there is no promotion/relegation between 2nd and 3rd level
I watch you everyday your videos literally make me sleep 😂
Great video, you should visit the cambuur stadium before it gets demolished!
I'll definitely try!
@@FootyAdventures thank you for trying, you would love the oldskool feel the ground has. With a lot of history! The last match on the 10th of May will be insane, I will be there, but it is sold out already...
Nice history !
(one correction, i think you meant to write the flood disaster of 1956, where 1600 people died in the province of Zeeland, not 1935)
Dat was in 1953 trouwens….😉
The International Peace Palace that you featured, home of the International Court of Justice, was paid for by Scottish philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, which is why there was an information board about him. The little visitor centre there is well worth a browse.
Awesome video!
This is a fascinating story
Another great video again buddie.
Watched, liked, subscribed!
Cheers, thank you, thanks!
Do Corinthian-Casuals when you're next in Surrey, Sam.
They once made up the entire England squad back in the day but back to back relegations now sees them in Step 7 of the English non-league football pyramid. Their story is right up your street. Shirt sales to Brazil is a signifantly sized and much valued revenue stream.
Always a great film
Wonderful film, i used to live in the Netherlands and got to see fc Utrecht occasionally. 👍⚒️
There‘s FC Nuremberg. They‘ve relegated just 1 season after winning the league in the 60s. They‘ve since been the only ones ever being able to bottle a league win so hard.
In 2007 they did the same thing again, and relegated after winning the german DFB cup.
They still have the 2nd most league wins in Germany, and currently face the 5th consecutive season in league 2, while being on the lower end of the table.
As I‘m a fan myself I just pray that we don‘t fall down like many other old successors did. I wanna be able to watch games even when I‘m 80.
Brit in NL here. I’ve played cricket there. I didn’t realise the famous footballing history they have.
It’s not widely appreciated in the UK just how late Dutch football became professional. Pro contracts only started to become a feature in the 1950’s and didn’t become the norm until the 1960’s.
Great video. Never realised they have 10 league titles and are just behind the three big clubs.
There's one of these in most leagues
- Aston Villa in England
6 of their 7 tiles came before 1910. They won 6 of the first 21 then 1 in the last 115 years.
- Genoa in Italy
The most titles barring the big 3 but none for literally 100 years. As well as Pro Vercelli.
Wow, this club would be a fun club to play in football manager
Great video from another country 👏
Love the story reveal in the toilet of an easyJet plane. Classy.
🤣🤣
Hvv denhaag was founded in 1883. Between 1891 and 1914 they won 10 championships. In 1932 they fell from highest division. Now they play 1e class (under 4th division)
We can see this a lot in English football. Not on this scale of course, all league winners since 1888 in England are in the top 2 divisions however when you look at the FA Cup we have Bury who had their golden period in the Edwardian period, The Wanderers who have 6 FA Cup titles the same as Newcastle more than Everton. It’s why I love that period of football across Europe
The Hague had a lot of great football clubs in the "only amateur" era. And some of these clubs were more for the upper echalon in the community and they considered it inferior to be paid to play football. So when Professional football was introduced in 1953, they opted to stay amateur clubs, 3 of these clubs in The Hague are HVV, HBS and Quick. Still very well known clubs in The Hague.
It would be interesting if ten Hag was coaching Den Haag :D
this is incorrect, because the eredivie was from the beginning of professional football onwards....
Zuid Holland. Noord Holland is Amsterdam and beyond...love The Netherlands.
Noord Holland is Haarlem
@@robindaleman6389 I have been..yup
Well you certainly surprised this Dutchman. I thought you were going to HFC Haarlem, HVV didn't cross my mind.
I’ve since heard about Haarlem. Will need to visit them next time I come!
Not a fall from grace. A great story though.
Where is the Stadium?
Nice little stadium
Go to Csepel SC, at Budapest Hungary. 4 first tier title, currently in non league (Budapest first div.) oooooh and to make it more funny: no its 2 teams enteres with the same Csepel name and Csepel logo.
nice one, but pity you didnt check weather first 😆
Bidor Botani in Malaysia...also non leaguers ...to stay a float each year is like a nightmare...kids who suffers....
Not sure if you have been but have you ever gone to the last piece of the old Wembley stadium
Top notch
Go to Genoa too.
❤
I see you read my comment on the pro vercelli video
Great to hear Dutch legend Schteeve Meeklaren at the start
I'm going to not count it if it's because they didn't go professional, like Queens Park.
I'm Dutch and I even didn't know all this
You will find AB in Denmark if you wanna see another team falling from grace :D
6:15 Ballotagecommissie 😊
Interesting enjoyed that from Wolves fan
if im not mistaken only the eredivisie is a payed league, some clubs in the 2nd division who used to play in the eredivisie do ofc pay their players, but there are still certain club even in the 2nd division where the footballers either arn't payed or little to none
my mistake i meant the 3rd division,not the 2nd
reminds me a little of queens park
Nver order a Amstel beer again, order hertog jan XD
AFC DWS next? (Sorry, didn't realize you had done this already.)
I saw the thumbnail and the date posted and thought it might be Vitesse, even if they weren't 10 times champion. Haha
I have played there before i had no idea 💀
I love the Netherlands
Wow, that lads spoken English is really good.
Livingston!!!!!!!!!!
It was Luton Town
HVV The Hague won their titles before WW1. They were always an amateur club and still. They never had a sizeable stadium ... So what's the 'fall from grace '?
Flying to NL or Italy? I am lost 😂
1st like as well
Nice wanted to do a video here, good content ideas and nice to see you scroll obscure Wikipedia articles like me 😂
Ik had echt nog nooit van HVV gehoord.
What about Sparta Rotterdam 1888 ?
