I think the order:1-6L6, 2-KT88, 3-EL34....The.6L6: nice,happy.....The EL34:soldierlike, trough, compresses.....KT88: dynamic, detonate, firm....The EH is generally pleasant, relaxed and JJ tougher.....I note, I think it's clearly not for everyone tab perceived, need to add some spiritual affinity also.....Thanks to the experiment, it was interesting! But it is possible that other amplifier, other speakers, other effects have been ..... ???
Very interesting. One thing I noticed across the board with EVERY comparison was the fact that the EH tubes, in general with EVERY sample, sounded more open, revealing space and extra harmonic content. Sounded more natural to me, something you can really hear at the beginning of the electric guitar samples for each. Pay close attention to the beginning of the JJ vs EH and you can almost hear this overall character difference I hear in the two tube brands, even when using them in our guitars amps as power tubes. JJ always tend to sound more buttoned up and cleaner to some but lose some of the magic that makes tube amps so alluring in the first place. The EH might do some things less well in the samples here, but sound less compressed in general. What you actually prefer is a matter of taste however. To me, the EH in general is the more appealing take, apart from the differences between these tube types.
abstrait1 I agree, with the POSSIBLE exception of the KT88s, I thought the imaging was better with all EHX and also more "open" in a way that was less fatiguing. The JJ KT88 set did sound pretty good, tho, I was surprised after all the other JJs being noticeably worse! lol
I would agree with the points you all have made, however I noticed something about the JJs on every tube which was great but perplexed me. The attack on the strings in the acoustic section was sublime and very lifelike. If we had a tube that portrayed all of those characteristics it would be a true gem. The Gold Lion tubes perhaps?
I also found the JJ EL34 to have the richest, most alive sound, with fastest transients and least effort. A lot of how we hear them depends on our playback computers / DACs.
I always find the KT88 to be the best all around power tube. Great Low end (best tube for Bass Amps), midrange is present across the board, and the highs are smooth. I like the EH, over the JJ. After all Electro Harmonix owns the factory in Russia where they are made. Genelex Gold Lions are supposed to be the best, if one could just afford them.

I agree with Ron Rivet. The 1 st to me sounds better ( more clean) to this test! I ` ve noticed, that many times, a tube in another gear, sounds different!
It's a tough comparison. The same model tube will sound different from different manufacturers ...and most good working tubes pulled from old 50's-60's equipment sound even better. When I found a pile of Sylvania and JAN 12AX7's in a trailer full of old military commo equipment at my buddies scrap yard, I tried them in one of my old Mesa amps. I immediately realized how good the old tubes were. Better response , better dynamics, cleaner. This was my experience in my guitar amps. I sold a few thousand of them at 50 cents a piece back around 1990. Helped me with college expenses but I sure regret that today ! Today, many of the tubes available are re-labeled and in many cases, you don't know what you're getting. Back then, the people I sold them to said that a lot of these with faded printing would be tested then re labeled. I cant imagine it being any different today ...except that all those old "good ones" have been gobbled up. You see any old junk radio, TV, Organ out for garbage, PULL THE TUBES ! Nice comparison video, and thanks much for posting it !
great job man & very appreciate you put the minute where riffs starting from. IMHO the EL34s are the worst for hifi music cos their too more compressed & little dynamic sound. So i prefer other ones cos are mor "airy" and open sound. EL34s is too much compressed to me even if i like that cool sort of "tall & narrow cathedral-nave" reverb feeling that EL34 can do. Just my opinion obviously. To me the best of those sixtet is the first one: JJ 6L6 because is the weakest but warmest one, the one with less gain suppose. All others are too "metallic" sound & powerful sound but them lose a bit in dynamic. That's cos my taste falling in love w/ JJ 6L6. i prefer having less powerful and if you want less "HiFi" too but more warmth & "color", others are a bit, say, "cold" or "anaemics" or blanky. the most hifi are the two kt88s obviously. But that 6L6 mmhmmhmm have something others dont: the color - but if you are an Hi-fi maniac so will forget the color to a impartial sound. The prob is i like "biased" stuff (id with an own colored personality). Maybe that little jj 6L6 is the less hi-fi one, but i love that

noob question here... can these tubes replace eachother without any MOD?
The maximum rating is determined by the maximum voltage that can be applied to the vacuum tube and the maximum current.
The voltage may be lowered to increase the current, or the voltage may be raised to reduce the current.
There is no problem if the product is less than the maximum plate loss.
The voltage of this amplifier does not change, but the current can be changed by bias adjustment.
Also, the voltage of this amplifier is lower than the maximum voltage of these vacuum tubes.
Typical operating conditions are quite extensive and the conditions of use here are completely satisfactory.
