I'm a fan of Loch Lomond and maybe its because they don't over do the marketing and its great value and sure they may not have the most amazing sherry barrels but if you want some nice bourbon cask its good. I found this bottle for 80 Aud which is like 50 Usd and for an 18 that's unheard of.
I've had a couple bottles of the 12 yr and really enjoyed it. I've had the 18 yr for at least a year and just never opened it yet. I think I will really enjoy this bottle after your opinions. Lately my Costco has been getting cases of the 18 yr in for $80... Great review
I opened the 18 and tasted it a few times. It certainly a different Highland style that I've ever had. For $75 can't go wrong. I've seen it several times at my local Costco.
Loch Lomond, its a Frankenstein of a distillery....would love you to put this up against the Glen Scotia 18...now that would be interesting....great job fellas...
Guys, I was pleasantly surprised how much I like their 12 year and have been thinking about picking up this 18 year. Chuckling at the "space ice cream" reference and then LOL on the creepy hand stuff. 😄😄
I have noticed Loch Lomond getting a lot of love lately, but the bottlings I have tried have all been so so. Nice whisky but nothing really note worthy. I love the very exact taste notes like dry freezed ice cream for astronauts😂
Mike this whisky might be cheap! It’s not not all bad. But to me it’s the worst 18 year old I ever had. Second worst was bomore 18. Yes the finish holds long and you taste a good age but other then caramel apples to me it tasted like paper cardboard box. I had to give it a rating of 75 to be honest. I hope I had only a bad bottle tho but the 12 is decent. Good review.
"it's a nice whisky" Now that you're down under $100 are we gonna see Tomatin 18 next? I like pouring these 2 side by side. The LL does like a bit of time in the glass but eventually it falls apart after about an hour. The Tomatin I thought held together really well. I always thought the LL 12, obviously similar to the 18 but not nice, noticably more punchy
No plans to add the Tomatin 18 to the collection, but never say never. This was a new whisky and distillery to me so it was easier to justify the purchase.
@@topshelfdustin3060I'm glad to see you review it. Thank you. In stores by me it's got such a bottom shelf reputation with NAS expressions and the super cheap 12 year old. It's a bit like Glen Moray in that respect, where the higher age statements are almost presented with integrity and worth drinking. The casks LL sells to independent bottlers can go under different names but they wind up being decent drama.
@@jackthepickledhound honestly, just had some friends saying to get it, and I was kinda just in the mood for a new bottle after about a month of not buying anything (rare for me!). Was kinda shocked as I assumed it would suck.
@@topshelfdustin3060 Also I just saw a couple SB 25s pop up nearby for $950. I'm assuming it's the 2022, but haven't verified yet. You had the chance to try yet?
@@topshelfdustin3060 eeeeeeeeeexcellent! Now if I can just find $950 in one of these pockets... Also looking forward to review of 2022 local barley. First crack drams were a little tight, but it's opened up fast. Beautiful stuff.
I keep going back to Loch Lomond to give it a try and it really doesn't do it for me. Not sure about Dustin's comments regarding SWA rules. This distillery is doing a lot of different things including putting malted barley through a continuous still but they follow the rules by calling it a Single Grain 100% malted barley?
@@squinugie2091 my intent was that they produce what is otherwise single malt but do it against their rules and thus can't label it. While there's no rule against it, imo the intent was the steer people towards doing things one way.
@@topshelfdustin3060 I see where you are coming from. The distillery are SWA members and clearly do follow the rules. What you mean is that unlike other producers they are happy to experiment (you say rebel) with bottlings which technically can not be called Single Malt Scotch under the very precise rules even though all the ingredients are the same.
I remember astronaut ice cream, it was always a highlight of visits to the Kennedy Space Center as a kid. Neopolitan...

Yeah it's a weird distillery for sure! We do need to review some GS products in general. 18 however is likely my last favorite of their range.
Great review guys. Recently picked up the 12 and trying to figure it out. So far so good but working through it.
This was my first time with the distillery. I’ll try more.
@@topshelfwhisky The 12 yr was my first time with the distillery also.

Sacrilege I know, but there's something Springbanky about this bottling.

I don’t hate this one , but not really my thing. Haven’t tried it with water.
At 46% water isn’t needed but normally rewarding on the nose.
I picked this one up for $50 and it's certainly worth that, but it came out just kinda weird for me. I've just yet to vibe with Loch Lomond.
I wouldn't blame anyone for being a huge fan or just thinking it's so so. It's to play off mike "safe polorizing".
