Growing up my mother allowed us kids to pick a new ornament each year. When we grew up and married, she packed up the ornaments and gave us a box full of Christmas treasures for our tree. I'm almost 60 and still have my childhood ornaments and love each of them. They tell a story of hobbies and popular trends throughout my entire childhood.

Candle hack: freeze your candle when you get it from store. Then take out and put on shelf. You only have to do this once, and the candles should then be basically drip less.

During a power outage I cooked a turkey on a wood stove in a turkey roaster. Honestly, the best meal!!! My kids are a grown and they still talk about that turkey. We were without power for DAYS!!!! We ate turkey for DAYS!!!!!! We pretended we lived in the days of "Little House on the Prairie"!!!! It was a lot of fun!!!!!

When we have very cold spells I put the Long Winter (little house on the prairie series) audio book on and we are thankful we don't have to use a coffee grinder to grind our wheat or twist hay. For awhile as a child we attended a church Pa helped build in De Smet SD so I've always felt a connection to the books.

Don't apologize to anyone about taking care of Josh with breakfast in bed. He does a lot for you that we may not see. He is your IT guy, your irrigation guru, and many others I'm sure. Take care of each other. I had to laugh when he was behind the tree. Reminded me of Wilson from Tim the tool man Taylor. Never saw his full face. I really thought your tree would be very organic, with seed packets and pine cones. Lol. Everything looks beautiful.

Happy holidays from here in New Zealand. That frost looks so delicious as we slide into a very hot and humid summer in Auckland... ugh!

The Dutch oven was a very kind gift. You may want to look for one without the legs for your wood stove or using your Le Creuset. The heat will transfer easier that way. A kettle and trivet are also nice to have, as you've seen. They look pretty as decoration on the stove and are a practical item. When my parents went from a fireplace to a wood stove, Mother was firm about it being able to use it as a cooking source. If the power went out, she was NOT going to be without a way to cook whatever she wanted.

You mentioned that all your glass pans were in the freezers with meals. I was wondering how much space those glass pans take up in your freezer. Sometimes i line some glass bowls/baking dishes with cling wrap and then set the food in them before freezing. Once they are frozen hard... i take them out of wrap them up with more cling and foil without the glass. When i want to cook them... i just unwrap and drop them into the dish they were molded into. This works great for making a full rice cooker of rice then dishing it out in 2 person portions in a glass bowl to freeze. Easy-peasy to drop back in and microwave ready in 5 minutes. I enjoyed spending time with you and love all your decore. So did Tibro...lol

The legged variety of pots and pans are called spiders. You use them the most efficiently when you put hot coals under them, otherwise the heat transfer is probably easier in the lodge with the flat bottoms. I really like the decorations you have made!

One quick tip....the cast iron ditch oven that you have is for a camp fire. If you have the original lid, that’s where you put coles on top. You need flat bottomed cast iron to cook on your stove. Just a quick tip from someone that has cooked with wood for many years. 💙💛🙏

Love eggnog in my coffee. Recently tried Ovaltine in coffee, and it's pretty good.
I'm also minimalist, but I do have 4 ribbons and a few dozen ornaments on the tree, lol. Last year, I saved TP cores and made a glittery garland for the tree. Pandemic memento.

Hi Becky, I love watching you and wanted let you know that the pot you used on the wood stove is best used to sit directly on coals or closer to the fire not on the wood stove. The legs on the pot prevent the bottom of the pot from getting the direct heat like the pots with boiling water. That is why it took so long for the chicken to cook. The pot is gorgeous, I hope you continue to get lots of use from it.

Those with legs go into the ashes/coals, those without go on top of the stove. You can also use a foil pan, big one, to scoop the ashes into for on top of the firebox, but a lot of work there. 😘👍

Nobles are my favorite Christmas tree, too! We grew nobles and douglas firs from seedlings years ago and had Christmas trees to cut for many years. Sold a few, too. Now the trees are very tall and I cut branches for decorations. The fresh boughs smell soo good! We heated our house with wood for 36 years. Then we finally installed a heat pump 5 years ago and love it as our house has heat when we're away. The bonus is the air conditioning with the heat pump. It has really been a blessing with the hot summers we've had recently in the PNW. Also when there is smoke and ash in the air from wildfires, we can keep the windows closed. The wood stove is great when it gets very cold or if the power goes out. Although our generator can run the heat pump. Merry Christmas!

  • @lucythora984

The type of Dutch oven that you have may do better cooking in the stove instead of on it. The feet are meant to keep it above the coal, I believe. Maybe get the stove hot and let it burn to mostly embers, then push them away from a spot and sit the pot inside. We bought an “antique” wood stove years ago because of the power outages in our area. This stove was in pieces, looked rough, and partially rusted, but my father and grandfather cleaned and repaired it to full working order. It’s a 6 eye stove with an oven, and a warmer on top. Learning to cook on that thing was a learning curve! 😂 My grandfather taught me how to cook on it and every time I use it I think of him. One last thing though, when we cook on it, the heat it gives off will run you out of the house! I am amazed at how anyone could cook on one of those in the summertime. Especially here in the south. Keep up the great videos!

That's awesome you were given an heirloom to use & hopefully pass on to your child one day. One thing I can share with you is that to "cure" the inside of your pot put some oil or bacon grease on paper towel & rub the inside of your pot really well & put it on your wood stove till it soaks into the pot, it will start to smoke. We cajuns do this to all our cast iron pots to prevent rusting & give them forever life. 💜💜💜

I miss having a wood stove. I remember my mom cooking a pot of pintos on the stove and I just loved it! My great aunts and uncle had an actual wood cook stove they used year round. They were born in the late 1890’s-early 1900’s and were stuck in their ways until the day the passed. No electric or gas stove for them. They were the ULTIMATE homesteaders. No running water or indoor plumbing until the late 1980’s. They are the reason I love farming/homesteading so much. And now watching you do things I remember from my childhood is AWESOME! Thank you for creating great content.
