Solution 1: Cropping
Cropping is a common way to convert portrait videos to landscape format. If you choose to use this method be aware that you'll lose around two-thirds of the shot and some image quality. After you have opened filmora and your footage is uploaded, drag and drop the portrait clip to the timeline. Once you place the clip on the timeline you'll be able to see black bars on both sides of the video in the preview window. Right-click on the video clip and select the Crop and Zoom option. Once the new window appears on your screen you'll see five different cropping options: Manual, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 and 9:16. The cropping option you pick should match what your project is set at. For this project its 16:9 so lets pick that one. The image in the right of the preview window will show you how your footage will look like after you crop it. Use this window to frame the cropped image. Hit Ok when you’re happy with your frame.
Solution 2: Add a Blurry Background
If you would like to keep the image quality of your video clip, then we’re going to create a blurred background for your vertically oriented video. This option still keeps your footage in portrait mode, but the black bars that show up on the sides will be replaced with a blurred image. Head over to the Filters menu where you select the blur effect you want to use. Filters like Blur Bars, Basic Blur, Rings or Diamonds can be used effectively to cover the black bars in your vertically oriented video. Click on the effect to see how it looks like when applied to your video clip. Drag and drop the effect you like the most to the editor's PIP track and adjust its duration so it fits the duration of the video. This puts your video as a blurred image where the black bars used to be. This look is often used for online videos being broadcasted on tv, sports highlights, and many youtube videos. Alright guys, well that's how you change portrait video to landscape format. Hope this helped you guys out, and don’t forget to subscribe, like, and comment - see ya next time!
Great video, I love it. I always wanted to know why and how this happens with those black bars on the side. I love using Filmora as a video editing tool. I'm now excited to try what this video teaches. It has been years since I wanted to know about this and just in the few short minutes here you blow my mind. Thanks guys!
I am a newbie to this whole filming thing so to start out I am just using my phone in landscape to record videos. I didn't realise by zooming out though I got the black bars. I did crop like you mentioned but I think I prefer to record some parts again.
HI Matt, Thanks for your video. I completely agree and currently have some video's to re-format.
I downloaded the free Filmora app however I can crop and zoom but I cannot split. So currently I have cropped the video but it is still in portrait. Can you please advice what to do? Thanks!!
Hi, after clicking crop & zoom, I don't have two windows appear (the cropping window and the preview window)? Also, after I crop, the black bars don't disappear. I just updated my app to the latest version. Thx.
Hi, do have a tutorial for uploading a vertical video on youtube? I also use this Filmora and I want to upload 720 x 1280 vertical video without black screen on side
Hi Filmora. How to speed both the video in the middle and background when you use blurry background. I end up having only the backgroung faster but not the middle !
Hi, I'm only looking to convert old videos on my pc from the old "portait" format to 16x9, I'm looking for something really simple as I'm very "novice" with pcs, thank for ur help! 😉
Thank you so much for this. 👍🏾 Could not figure out how to do the blurred background.
This tutorial is a couple of years old. In the online world, this happens haha. My point is this: My screen does not match the screen of the author. As such, this tutorial did not exactly match my software version. I was able to "convert" my project from portrait to landscape after hunting around quite a bit; thank you for that. This video was the top video in my search. I'm not a video editor, but I can follow instructions well. If this tutorial had matched my software, I would have been able to complete this task in under a minute. Since I had to hunt around a bit, it took me about 10 minutes. This is not a complaint, but rather an explanation of the current situation and perhaps a suggestion for up-to-date tutorials. Thanks for all you do.
This didn't work for me either (Filmora 11). After A LOT of digging around I realized you have to reframe the footage by clicking "Auto Reframe" on the startup screen, before adding it into and editing a project. I got it done, but this was seriously NOT intuitive, unlike many editors where you just click something simple like "remove black bars"!
Is there a way to shift the point of focus based on the time in the video? The video focal point in the video I'm trying to crop shifts throughout the video...
I have ifone6s and i have problem with my videos now with filmora 9 before in version 8 i just rotated my video but in filmora 9 it does not work and there are bars still ?

Hi Matt I'm trying to follow your method right now in my computer but there's something wrong with mine. It's only the cut portion from up and down being covered by blur effects and not the both sides. What's the problem of my Filmora9? Are you using diff.version? Pls.help me, I'm getting frustrated. Plsss. Thanks
