    FYI, App Preview currently exports at a maximum of 1080p @ 30 fps.

      This did not work for me - dragged vertical footage in first, but the horizontal footage just resets itself once I drop it in. Any other tips here?

    Another tip: the export method (export file) in this clip generates a low quality movie when working with HQ footage (ie 4k). choose "app preview" to get the original quality, it will generate a MP4 too.

      even export in app preview it still gives 1080 not 4K even though my original file is in 4K 60 ..... or am i missing something !! Alok

    Thank you for all the iMovie power tips! You can also use a vertical size image instead of movie to start it off in the right shape - I have a “shorts template” image file saved to quickly drag in whenever I’m doing this.

    For anyone else wondering this, you can even remove the vertical video in the beginning and it'll preserve the frame size! So for me I just dumped in any vertical video from my phone, then removed it after I saw it had correctly setup the orientation for a vertical video and continued editing the footage I had that was landscape. Worked an absolute charm, thank you!!!

    THANK YOU! As a photographer (definitely not a videographer), I've been incredibly frustrated by the way Instagram now gives preference to reels almost exclusively. Engagement for still photos has fallen off a cliff-bad news for a professional photographer like me. The Ken Burns effect is great for showcasing still photos, and no other amateur video editor I've found does the Ken Burns effect as easily as iMovie-but I've been stuck trying to make vertical reels using the old-school horizontal format. Not ideal, to say the least. This tutorial is a huge, huge help. Thank you!

    Thank you so much! The App Preview tip is crucial. In Apple Support they tell you that starting any Project with a vertical video will cause the exported file to be vertical, but that is false. Your App Preview trick seems to be the key 😀

    OMG I CANNOT believe I've finally found out how to edit vertical videos in imovie!! THANK YOU! I have been struggling for months with tiny little editing tool apps which take an age and are just totally inaccessible for someone with limited fine motor skills. I am already familiar with imovie and did not know this was possible. Is it too crass to say you just saved my life!!! lol I am Deliriously happy right now!! 🥰🤪🤩

    OMG i literally just learned how to make shorts from my existing content yesterday - and i was doing the whole export and flip thing.
    I am trying this way TODAY to see if it speeds up the process on making the shorts but this is amazing! i didn't even know that was an option in iMovie and thought i was going to have to buy Final Cut or something to do this :) grateful i stumbled across you!
