FYI, App Preview currently exports at a maximum of 1080p @ 30 fps.
Another tip: the export method (export file) in this clip generates a low quality movie when working with HQ footage (ie 4k). choose "app preview" to get the original quality, it will generate a MP4 too.
Great tip, thanks!
Thank you!
great tip, works fine. thank you too!
Great tip! Thank you!
even export in app preview it still gives 1080 not 4K even though my original file is in 4K 60 ..... or am i missing something !! Alok
This is a game changer. The hoops I was having to jump through to edit vertical videos was about to drive me away from iMovie altogether. This workflow is already making my life easier. Thanks for sharing!
dude didnt even heart your comment
Apologies, missed this comment. 😅 Thank you for the Super Thanks! Glad you’re putting the method to good use. It’s how I make all my Shorts.
same!!! holy god what a gamechanger.
Absolutely one of the best learning clips on RUclips. Thank you Mike, your the best ! Truly enjoy every video you produce.
Agreed!! Excellent
This was an enormous help to me as I prepared my first vertical video. There are always plenty of how-to videos to be found on online, but in my experience, few are as simple, clear, and thorough as this. Many thanks, Mike. Subscribed! Keep up the great work.
Michael, thank you! WOW! This may be just the trick to push me toward creating shorts for RUclips. This feature is literally a game changer.
Complete game changer! Thank you! I've spent all evening trying to look at solutions to turning my landscape RUclips clips into TikTok verticals and this worked so easy.
This video is perfection...finally found a tutorial on youtube that actually worked for me lol. And you were clear, concise, and didn't skip over anything. Kudos, sir!
Your following is well-deserved as are the likes and views on this video. Your tutorial was very thorough yet succinct enough not to be too long. Thanks so much for sharing how to make vertical format videos with us!
I have been looking for a video with this particular subject and I have to tell you. This is the BEST explanation of all RUclips, simple, clear and understandable. Thank you so much 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
So helpful! Thank you so much. I appreciate how succinct and clear this was!
This is genius! Thank you for sharing this feature as well as other capabilities within this mode. I love your teaching style as well- starting with a “problem” and running through the solution- your tips and features in the second half were enjoyable to watch!
I am soooo happy I found this video, although it took a long time to find it. You explained everything I needed to know and more. Thank you so much, it is very clear and helpful.
I appreciate this quick, complete and easy to understand tutorial. Exactly what I needed. Thanks!
This is off the chain. Brilliant simple break down, TOP MAN !!!!
Excellent video! Very clear and articulate! Thank you!
Unreal that someone actually made this content for us. So needed!!! Muchos Gracias
Thank you for all the iMovie power tips! You can also use a vertical size image instead of movie to start it off in the right shape - I have a “shorts template” image file saved to quickly drag in whenever I’m doing this.
Great tip!
@@MacVideoMagic Can you tell me where can I download an image right to be used?
For anyone else wondering this, you can even remove the vertical video in the beginning and it'll preserve the frame size! So for me I just dumped in any vertical video from my phone, then removed it after I saw it had correctly setup the orientation for a vertical video and continued editing the footage I had that was landscape. Worked an absolute charm, thank you!!!
This is such great news! I made a vertical using your old system and was very pleased but THIS is even better news. Thank you for all your work for your subscribers.
You are a wizard! And now I feel a relief that I can still use iMovie for my videos. Thank you a million times!
Excellent! I've watched a handful of your videos now and they have helped me immensely in learning to make videos for my channel. With the clear and concise instruction I always finish ready to take on a new skill. I'll now be adding RUclips shorts to my repertoire thanks to this one.
Thanks a lot!!! The only video (and article) I found on how to work with vertical videos in iMovie, that really works! Most of the others say is not possible, or give sketchy or inefficient workarounds!
I like the way you show and explain each and every step, without assuming any foreknowledge of software specifics on the viewer’s part. This is what I need.
Exactly what I needed. Quick and to the point, thanks!
THANK YOU! This was so helpful - concise and exactly what I needed
Whoa! This is great! You are so calm! I love how you present the material. Really great!
I have been a 100% behind the scenes RUclips watcher for the better part of a decade, but I had to break my silence to give you kudos on this video. There may be others explaining this, but the interwebs landed me here to find a solution to a problem that has plagued me for years. And it came at the perfect time. THANK YOU!
Thank you! This is EXACTLY what I needed! Subscribing!
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. Love how clear the steps are.
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!! I've been looking for this feature forever. This is the BEST!
Great video. Looked at other "how to vertical video on iMovie" tutorials and yours was definitely the best. Mahalo Michael!
You absolute legend. The HOOPS I have had to jump through to do such a simple thing. Thank you.
Thank you! Just did it. Thanks for short simple instructions!
You, sir, are a king of kings. Thank you so much! Fantastic presentation in front of the camera too.

Man that was an awesome tutorial Mike, appreciate you. Nice to know when I want to make a quick vertical video.
This is brilliant! Thanks. I was going crazy trying to figure out how to do this.
Wow - thank you! I've been editing my vertical videos in iMovie using your other method (which is still genius) until now - but how cool that I can do it this way, and add horizontal clips into the mix! This is so helpful - and, as always, thank you for being such a great teacher! You make everything so clear and do-able. :-D
Happy to help!
Thank you, finally after all these years. Now I know how to do this. Great explanation!
Incredible. I'm so glad you know so much! I don't even know what I need until I watch your videos!! THANK YOU

Thanks so much! This will make uploading my shorts way easier!
You are brilliant! Thank you for making this video and all your videos! 👍🏻
Great video! Thanks for the help Mike
Excellent video. Thank you
This is incredible!!! Exactly the functionality I have been looking for. It’s really awesome to be able to use the Ken Burns effect to slowly pan and keep the moving subject on the middle. Just repurposed a long form video for TikTok with this information.
Great to hear!
That sounds complicated, and maybe time consuming. I was thinking of trying that, but I thought it would be too much. Was it?
Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you so much!
Awesome!! Thank you SO much! Very helpful and exactly what I needed.
You are such a concise and clear teacher. Thank you!
THIS IS AMAZING Thank you so much for sharing!!
THANK YOU! As a photographer (definitely not a videographer), I've been incredibly frustrated by the way Instagram now gives preference to reels almost exclusively. Engagement for still photos has fallen off a cliff-bad news for a professional photographer like me. The Ken Burns effect is great for showcasing still photos, and no other amateur video editor I've found does the Ken Burns effect as easily as iMovie-but I've been stuck trying to make vertical reels using the old-school horizontal format. Not ideal, to say the least. This tutorial is a huge, huge help. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you! Short, concise, no meaningless fluff. Was able to do my vertical video quickly and easily! Thank you!
I literally refer back to this video each time I create a short, just to be sure I followed every step! Thank you for this effective, yet simple detailed tutorial :)
Glad it helped!
Great information and FANTASTIC presentation.
Thanks for this! Answered my question so well!
