I remember as a kid using pennies on the record player needle to slow down the record and dissect Van Halen licks and other licks I was trying to learn. Kids today have it easy with learning anything today and there is no mystery anymore but I wouldn't change a thing for me because it helped me in the long run especially ear training.

Same ,most kids today can't even play without tablature and a tuner which is sad . Music is a hearing art

That was such a cool story, Ryan....this guy has so much enthusiasm and rightfully so......a half hr interaction with the king + the 15 mins at the gas station, what an awesome experience dude!

Awesome! Listening to you guys reminded me of when I first saw KISS on TV. It was those HBO specials showing KISS concerts. I guess that might’ve been around 1980-when HBO first got started. Just a lot of PKA kickboxing, and they would show
some great live concert footage. I think it was KISS in Japan. I’ll have to look online, but do you remember those also?
My brother was six years older, born in ‘64. So he had that first VH album, and gave it to me just a couple years after it came out.
At that point my record collection went from like Stix, Journey, Billy Joel, Alvin and the chipmunks, and the soundtrack to Grease, ha ha… Ted Nugent double live Gonzo, KISS love gun, and Van Halen. 🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸

i saw ace frehley in the fall '22. ace likes to throw his picks into the crowd. ryan throws em as well & they stand next to each other on stage. the next thing you know, ryan & ace start throwing picks at each other & maybe you had to be there, but i thought it was hysterical, one of the highlights of the show for me.

Love this series dude!! 14:57 You guys talking about your parents lol -- My Mom was actually so cool back in the 70s that she learned to paint the KISS makeup on me and my brother and our friends every year for Halloween from like '77 to '80 or so

Such a great story & interview. I was born in September 1965 & started playing guitar in 79 & theirs so many similarities with this guy, I listened to the same bands, started on a Royce LesPaul copy that looked just like Jimmy Pages. I loved the sound a dirty guitar could make too & learning the 2 finger barr chord opened up the universe to me also. And by 1978/79 Ace & Eddie were my favorite guitarist.

Being used to seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd was a good thing. There was no lip syncing and they were one of the best live bands ever.

I do voice impressions and I can hear in Ryan Cook’s voice, a little David Lee Roth timbre. Ryan, you did sound like you can do a good impression of David Lee Roth and a little of Eddie’s nuances.
I am allergic to cigarette smoke so I could never have hung out with Eddie but it would be amazing to have done so! Lucky you!
Great chat you guys. It was fun to listen to!

Hmm, I have a "bootleg video" of that '81 Oakland show, and though the vocals sound raw, they seem dubbed in here and there.

Dave is the only reason why I started singing. Brilliant vocalist he is. Wicked tone, screams, melody ideas, attitude, etc... no one can sing Dave's stuff . properly.

Roth was so much better if a fit for this band, Sauce Sobaleski was good too but could not stand Van Hagar - that era of is unlistenable to me

I was in the front row at a Van Halen concert in 1984 and Eddie looked at me. Two hour Story about it coming up in my next post don't miss it.
