I'm sure you'll love it outside of the big cities, it's like another world. I still haven't made it to either Glasgow or Edinburgh but I'd imagine they're the opposite of what I was seeing here in the south-west, although from the photos I've seen Edinburgh does look very quaint in the historic centre.
You feel like you've been transported back in time. It amazes me that the castle is still in tack. I shopped so much on the Royal Mile. I went during August so it was so packed out but I didn't care.
Ha yeah it feels strange to hear that any tourist attractions were once packed - hopefully this will be the summer where the whole industry can start to normalise. Fingers crossed anyway!
Thanks for watching and apologies for my slow replies. Hoping to get caught up with all my comments over the next week. We'll see but in the meantime take care and all the best. 👊
@@MattWhitingsEurope you Welcome more than can say, thanks ..oh Matt, all is so fine , understand you can't reply so fast while you are on way to mountains, driving car, walking on cities, fixing all information , filming with camera, how you have time to eat my friend 😍😄hope you take good care of yourself , all the best to you too..keep in touch when possible, relaxed 🤗✨🥰🇬🇧❤🇫🇮
Yes indeed. The internet connection can be pretty bad in some of these places and it's not uncommon to have none at all for several days. Not a bad thing though as it's nice to take a break from it sometimes. Take it easy and have a great day!
@@MattWhitingsEurope thank you Matt, glad to read your replies🤗hope all good with ..have a great time ,take good care of yourself and stay safe 🌺☕🥧🍇🍓🍔🍟😀🥰
I always find it fascinating how late lighthouses were automated, I imagine not many people would have had such a difficult life of needing to be so self sufficient by the end of the 80's! It makes me think of the St. Kilda and how life became so hard for those who lived there they eventually were evacuated. I was meant to visit there on my trip in 2020 but it was cancelled the day we were driving up to Scotland 🤦♀The accommodation was a bargain - whilst I'm sure it's not the type of place you'd want to hang out in for long periods, it's not the point of it as you're out and about exploring. Such a great find!!
The accommodation was perfect for this type of trip, where I'm only staying in each place for one to two nights and with the intention of spending as little time in the room as possible (no offence to the hotel). All I needed was a bed and somewhere clean and quiet. It was perfect. Newton Stewart, which was about 15 minutes drive away, was much more expensive and there was no real benefits to staying there. St. Kilda sounds like an interesting place, isn't that close to the most westerly point in the UK? Loved the lighthouse, wish I could have climbed up to the top but it was closed (I think for the year). Wonderful views regardless.
Amazing video Matt. I’ve subbed! We are looking forward to our first trip to Dumfries & Galloway at Easter. Thanks for such an incredibly informative video. Hope you’re well.
Hey Max, yes I loved Creetown - I only wish I'd have stayed a bit longer! I actually took quite a bit of footage there but for one reason or another I didn't use much of it in the vlog. Lovely place though and I can see why your Father's heart was there. Thanks for watching!
Ah yes I've heard of the film but not seen it. It is a fascinating place, very interesting to learn about how the lighthouse keepers use to live and how they were self sufficient. Hope all is well in Finland!
@@ScenesBySevy Sounds like you're getting quite a range in temperatures over there - the main thing is that the sun is shining and summer is on it's way.
That was truly wonderful Matt. The wife and I climbed the many steps to the top of the lighthouse would have been 2017 I think even got a little certificate each to prove it it was a lovely day- have been back a couple of times since but it was closed to the public.
Thanks Kevin, glad you enjoyed it! I bet the views from the top were stunning, especially if you got a clear day. Love the idea of a certificate, definitely something to be proud of. My understanding was that it was closed throughout most of 2021 but hopefully it will be opening up again this year.
@@MattWhitingsEurope yes Matt guess Covid was the cause of the closure. Our trip to the top of the lighthouse came about because I could see a lady sat on a chair reading a book in where the light lives at the top! It was open and you got a certificate for climbing the stairs I couldn’t wait to get up there my wife not so keen😂. Don’t know if you noticed Matt there’s a room adjacent that contains all the machines that would of supplied compressed air to the foghorn it’s all beautifully kept and I’m working order there was to be a open day the day after but we had to leave the same day I was gutted 😞.
Sounds like a wonderful experience, Kevin. Yes I know the building you are referring to but didn't know it was used for that reason - very interesting to know, thanks. Yes I can imagine your disappointment at not being around when they were opening it up - so close but yet so far. It's amazing how things change over time! Incredible to think how many lives these lighthouses have saved over the years.
Great job! Did you know that St. Ninian converted the Southern Picts in Galloway ca.400A.D, and established a church and Abbey at Whithorn at that time. A McDowell in Alabama,U.S.A. J.R.S.,Jr.,Esq.
I should point out that it's not 56 miles from Portpatrick to the Northern Irish coast - more like les than 20. You could also have pointed out the Isle of Man which is visible too.
Thank you, you are correct. I think I meant that the Mourne Mountains are 56 miles away but I wasn't very clear. Good point about the Isle of Mann, looking at the map it's about 41 miles from Portpatrick and I was a lot closer than that when visiting the Mull of Galloway lighthouse. Thanks for watching!
Another nice thing about Port Patrick is that the Scotland flag seen at 1:34 has since been replaced by the Ukrainian flag in support, which I think is quite nice!
That 'll be a Stevenson lighthouse, of the R L S family fame, apparently Robert Lewis Stevenson once said he wished he could have designed a lighthouse like his family, anyone he said could have written Tresure Island... Harsh on himself!
No worries! I think your videos are great, I've done one or two myself but they aren't as technically good as yours, maybe you would like to see? Im a tour guide
Shame it wasn't such a clear day, you could have seen: Scotland, Cumbria, North Wales, Northern Ireland and The Isle of Man from the top of that lighthouse.
Yes indeed, love the stormy weather but would have been wonderful to get some clear views across to some of those places. Wonderful area and a top day, thanks for watching.

Galloway is my favourite part of Scotland they had a great cinema there when I was a kid on holiday. Down to Whithorn fabulous history.
Sounds like you have some good memories of the place, I certainly did enjoy my visit! Thanks for tuning in! 😀
We've been coming to Galloway /Dunfries since 2012
Sounds good Stuart, what is your favourite part? I really enjoyed visiting the area, there's so much to see and explore!
I was talking to another lady about going to Scotland. Next time I want to go outside of Edinburgh and explore the countryside, the small villages.

Thank you, much appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful trip, I left a little piece of my heart there! It's incredible how much there is to see.
Hope you enjoyed Creetown. It's my late father's home village. He lived most of his life in England, but his heart was always where his roots were.

My father's gravestone is made of Creetown granite. It was no longer being quarried when he died but there was still some about.
Enjoying to see this location and interesting lighthouse information, this makes me think about the movie the lighthouse 2019.

The Mull of galloway fog horn does work.
Thanks for the information. So it works but is no longer in use?
