  • It's been a big month for the America's Cup as four of the six teams unveiled their brand new AC75s. Years of development work and almost 100,000 hours of build time, there is plenty riding on each of these new launches. These are the boats that will deliver their dream of winning the America's Cup, but who's got it right? Matt Sheahan reports on the story so far and searches for early indications.
    Meanwhile, there was plenty of action, drama and close racing down under as SailGP headed for Sydney, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand for the southern hemisphere stage of Season 4. We look at what happened on and off the water.
    We also report on the incredible story of Maiden. Thirty five years after making history in the Whitbread Round the World Race after Tracey Edward's all female crew became the first to complete the race, a new crew has provided another wave of inspiration as they complete their lap of the planet to take the top trophy in the Ocean Globe Race while setting an impressive new record.
    Plus, we go afloat to try out some of Henri Lloyd's latest kit, as well as delivering another double helping of Docktalk.

    Matt, 100% agree with you about Annapolis, it's not just the town but the FOOD in the town, but it is just another boatshow; was the last time I saw you, I was running the Oyster 47 after Will White's Dad had a heart attack (and sadly did not make it out the other side).
    First did Annapolis is 1986 as Mate on one of the 2 Irwin 68's, at the time the biggest boats at the show, and with our Stackpac - at the time the biggest ever!! The after show parties in Back Creek are also memorable, especially when Jimmy Buffett was around (also RIP).
    Glad you are trucking along here - don't worry about the verbal, as long as it's all about (sailing) boats we ain't going to complain! Rock on and Break a leg. 😎

    Big respect to Tom Slingsby for putting his hand up for much of the blame for crashing into the Sail GP Christchurch mark, and I agree with him on his comments re the mark being hazard waiting to happen. Why don't the organisers use soft inflatable marks in future which when/if hit don't destroy the boat(s).

    I know that a lot of the 'content' is ads but it'd be interesting for Matt (an active RS400) sailor to comment on the Melges 15. This is one of the first asymmetrical dingies in the US market and probably already the most successful but it looks pretty [19]90s compared to what has long been available elsewhere.

    Slingsby always strikes me as a very impressive person (as well as a prodigiously talented sailor and inspirational skipper), remarkably matter-of-fact, doesn't hide his feelings, and is yet seemingly entirely free of the customary celebrity BS.
    Considering he comes from the wrong side of the Tasman, that's all particularly noteworthy and creditable, I reckon.

      It's not clear from this coverage that the mark which the Aussie boat hit at the Christchurch SailGP was not the turning mark; it was a self-relocating mark intended for the finish line, pausing en route to its proper eventual location . This was an unfortunate fact that the skippers had been advised of during the start sequence, but there is a hell of a lot going on at that stage in the race, and it was in the absolute worst place it could possibly be. I agree with Tom S that the penalty was unfair, and I think the kiwis would probably agree. They generally prefer to win on the water than in the committee room, and Slingsby had been left without options the way things panned out.

    @TheGif89a Месяц назад

    Hmmm
    The collision was after the first mark - it was boundry conditions - Canada forced to turn because of the Kiwis and the Aussies inside the Canadians had to turn and it was either Canada or the Start/Finish Mark,

    Boy that Luna Rossa boat looks fast, hopefully the NZ boat can contain it.

    Hi Again Matt - been following the Transat (sorry, never really been interested in the USA Cup, even though have sailed a few) - am interested in the VMG (or VMG) of the current Transat CIC boats, and am more than a bit disturbed by the fact they neither have the ability to make more than 80 Degrees up hill and 130 down - the VMG's are terrible right now - surely it would make sense to lift both foils and become a monohull, with an symmetrical kite to break through the low right now? check time of post.

    How do these boats get up out of the water and start planing when they dont have sails up?

    • @samc.6639
      @samc.6639 Месяц назад +1

      Towed. They normally do tow tests before they properly go sailing

    • @devolution000
      @devolution000 Месяц назад +1

      Yes they are towed up to speed, so their underwater "foil" wings begin to generate lift to get the hull up and out of the water.
