Dang man that finger looks painful, hope you have a quick recovery. I just started restoring my 1982 21’ hydro sport from the stringers up and have found so many useful videos from you, thanks for all the help!
Just did this same thing last year with a 2000 SeaSport 21' Center Console. Boat was built using Greenwood XL so that was a big bonus to alleviate some rot worries. Bought the boat for $3500 with a trailer w/ a blown Johnson 200. So after a repower with a 2021 Yamaha 150, new wiring, new upholstery and repainting I'm in it for about $23000 ($18K of that is the repower). This winter, I'm pulling the topside apart, fixing gel cracks and repainting it.
Thanks for this video, I was planning to rebuild my boat, 21 ft glass centre console- rotten transom, soft floor, needs a full re wire and I want a new motor. Instead I cut my losses found a done up boat for $20 grand but with a older motor, so I bought that, I can use it straight away, do up my old boat for fun, while I wait for a new motor to come from Japan which will probably take 12 months or more in Australia.
My son and I picked up a Wellcraft V20 for 2grand. tI came with a great running Yamaha 150 txrr. It does take more than you think it will in time. I am a Architectural millwork/ trim carpenter person. We had the advantage of using the shop and tools. The keel and transom needed some love. The wiring was easy because we ripped all of the old out and started clean. Gut it/cut it/rework it. We have found that the wiring is usually just a joke. Newer products have solutions for completing a nice clean install. Below water Corina White/ Above water Sea Foam Green. Waiting on the rub rail and paperwork.
My current project is a 1972 cruise a home 40’ Corsair. Auction and back taxes under $820. Yes it is was a basket case, yet a fully functional unit from then is averaging $70,000 in working order with the mechanicals including wear and tear on existing 40 year old materials. I am estimating my time and materials to be about that same $70,000 BUT I will have a seasoned and new boat tech and mechanicals with a updated interior. That would be close to $1million new for under 100,000
I watch the show all the time. Great job. I just purchased a used boat, the price I paid was 10 grand below the asking price because of things it needed. Now restoring the boat required the following. New gelcoat, reseal, rub rail, new center console, new seats and upholstery, electronics, new live well, rewired, new head unit and speakers and new props. This ended up costing an additional 18 thousand dollars. So yea, the price can climb up there really fast. One of the most expensive part of the restore was the labor. Ouch!
My boss just gave me a really nice pretty large boat that needs some work and I have been really excited about jumping into all the way up until I watched this video.. now I'm trying to figure out wth I got myself into 🥺
No pun intended, I'm in the same boat. Re storing a 1980 cat from Australia. 2 new tanks and everything from helm back and added insulated boxes in the floor. To much to list. Keep up the good work
I tend to avoid boats with wood in them. All fiberglass boats are great. You don’t have to completely tear them apart and rebuild them. I personally don’t have the time or skill to do this. They tend to be more expensive but you can get them for cheap if you look hard enough. We got a 1999 Key West 196 Bay Reef with a 1999 150 Johnson Ocean Pro, a Humminbird 898c SI fish finder, a Boss MRG 350B stereo, and SeaDek covering the whole thing for $6500. It only needed a new and rewiring under the dash. It took us about 8 hours to fix.
I rebuilt my 1996 26ft aquasport , new transom new floor , i had 4500 in material , i bought it for 4500 , the motor on it , they thought it had a rod knocking ,2003 honda 225, but it was a midshaft bearing , i had about 1800 in parts for the motor , i went through the fuel system also ,and 450 into rewiring , 1000 into new interior ..i got a decent offshore boat now ..
When I was looking for a used outboard 2 years I found that south Florida used two stroke 200 pieces were 60% of what people wanted here in the Carolinas , ended my motor had 1 had connecting rod bearing , crank was fine so just rebuilt it
Ouch that finger looks narley dude! Out here in CA the cost for even a shell of a jetski is super high. Since the boat is basically brand new, throw in a top end rebuild to it, you could probably get close to 30K. I mean it is now in like new condition. That being said for someone who doesn't do this as a business it is a labor of love to have a boat. For someone like me, rebuilding the ass end of a boat is probably not something I would take on personally. I can do some minor glass repair, but nothing like you see from hurricane damaged boats. We look for those barn finds where the haul is in great condition, but maybe is needs a motor rebuild or it doesn't have a motor at all and the owner just wants it gone. It is amazing though over time guys who work on boats collect some much stuff.
I tell you what it costs. If you want to get paid properly for your labor, it usually costs more than you will sell it for. This goes for boats, planes, cars and trucks.
I would say for what you have into that boat minus the labor and for something you know was done right 26,000 was a steal. If you had to pay for labor it would still be worth it when you compare the cost of a new boat of the same size and outboard.
I'm working on a 2001 G3 pro series 175. Completely gutted, repaint hull, new decking, wiring, merideck flooring, trolling motor, helix 5, and putting on a 90hp honda 4 stroke i already had. Gonna have $3500-$4000 into it and gonna be asking $8000.
I love your channel so much better with you in front of the camera. I am restoring a boat the last 3 years in Mexico and enjoy watching what you do. I really enjoy the change of your channel.
I have two at the moment - wood x13ft McKenzie drift boat/ Welded Aluminum power/drift boat 16ft9" - Welded aluminum boats should be lifetime boats. Unless they have been wrecked. Small wood boats are light and handy.
Young man I have moved down to Sebring FL. and Florida is synonymous with boats so I will be doing my do dillagence in buying a boat , I'm leaning towards a Boston Whaler .
Brother don't get salt water in that! I had same thing and I have a saltwater tank and got an infection and damm near had to cut my hand off. Wish ya a fast recovery
Lately the Yamaha F40 is coming down slowly over night/after few hours. I see no oil leakage, I checked the power trim oil level and everything seems normal. The screw to manually trim the motor is ok as well. I read somewhere that "If no leaks are found, it also could have been a cylinder bypassing internally"... Since I live in a small Greek island where no mechanical issues can be dealt with, can you tell me if you have a video about this specific problem? Thanks again
Boats over here are double what they were. And that's if you can even find one for under 30k. My friend is going to the auction and doing minimal work to flip.
All said and done you have 70 thousand dollars boat ocean master are very sought after l have been looking for one for two years and all are over hundred thousand
Great video again! Was just down there this week really wanted to swing in and say hi but you know how it is when you're out on the water having fun and enjoying the area! If you ever want to come do some scalloping in Homosassa / Crystal River area give me a heads up, would love to meet ya'.
I’m local in south florida. I have a dusky 96’ I want to restore with EFI 4 stroke motor. Do you do side jobs for clients or only restore your own boats you buy?
What did you figure your hourly rate was? 156 hours is a ton of labor. At $30 an hour that’s $5k at $60 it’s $10k. Not sure you could justify the cost of it only brings $25k that’s $3k profit with 156 hours would be $20 a hour. I guess that’s not horrible but seems like slave labor for that rate. But at least I’m sure it’s fun
Let me check my understanding, he put $27K cash into the boat plus 156 hours of free professional labor and then he says the completed boat is worth $25K-$30K, is that right or am I missing something? Good luck with your injury. Thank you.
Do you know anyone looking for a 2007 verado 275. I believe it’s an XXL. The longer shaft. I bought Triples and only needed the outer two. Has just about 1000 hours on it. Don’t have the rigging but may have a DTS module to go with it
So when you out an amp in a boat with an alternator style charging system. Why do i get whine? Like static and cutting out when putting boat into gear. I have grounded out basically everything i can on the radio.
Just kind of seems like he lost a ton of money on that deal your time must be worth next to nothing. You say you think the boat is worth about 25,000? You had 140 hours in that? That’s a lot of hours are a lot of money at $100 an hour
I knew I couldn't afford to restore and older boat unless I started out with something in pretty good shape 😂. It took me quite a while to find a boat I thought I could restore and I went the easy route. I bought a CC with hardly any interior to replace easy to work on and in need of little things and a lot of labor 😂. It's awesome though because it's a blank canvas I can put whatever I want on. I'm under $7,500 invested and about 40 hrs😂. Buy the time I have it where I want it I'll be around $9,000 Invested for a boat that looks brand new with a trailer that's completely restored. That's until the 87 Black Max 150 quits 😂 Then it won't be a bargain and I'll never get what I have into it back😂. I don't care though I planned on getting a newer motor for it anyway. This Black max has great compression and runs good so I'm keeping it alive as long as I can. I'm gonna go broke with the gas but no 4 stroke sounds like this and the power to weight ratio is awesome. Moves that 19' boat with absolute authority 😂.
Is that gas tank size major overkill for a boat of this size?? Real question i only ask because i know someone with a brand new 30ft twin engine cruiser i/o and it only has a 105gal tank from the factory
Ok let's start the bidding at 32k. Does it have a trailer? Doesn't matter. Sell it now sell. Sell sell. Take the money and hold it for an even better flip when the even higher end less remodeling needed boats start being sold off in a stressed market. It's coming and the deals are going to be sweet. We're gonna nickname you Little Yachty. FYI there's a bunch of free boats out in the middle of lake Mead lol.
Thank you, and you should check out the Boater's Program man, you could easily restore a boat with what you learn and have access to with that program! BornAgainBoating.com
It seems like you did pretty well on this one. If you figure your labor being worth $25/hr. That's another $4,000 on too of $21,700. But in today's market, I'm sure you ended up in the black. I'd probably ask $29k and settle at min. $27k. So I have to assume you still covered your material and labor, plus the profit. And you have the rigging and motor to sell, or use in another project (if you haven't already). Am I close?
Why did you pull out the gas tank just bought a 2011 campion 17cc it’s fresh water only boat been sitting since 2018 not sure if I should take it out? DIY guy here
i was thinking about buying a 500 boat & trailer without a motor. honestly... i feel like this guy sees a category that could be filled and he picks the most expensive maxxed out stats of the possible thing he could buy and does that... all i want to do is slap a used engine on the boat and the link ups i have to.. get some batteries etc... bare minimum on everything, no maxing out of any stats... a water proof portable speaker is good enough for me. I'm only going to be out bay fishing. i don't need all those fancy gadgets or anything look nice. I'm purely utility.
Wonder job on the cost analysis. Great job on growth of your channel. You have been doing a fantastic job of the DYI aspect. I was sad to see the Politics brought into your channel.

I’m finishing a 25’ hydra restoration and I don’t believe I spent 5k in electrical wiring or rigging. And I had a complete new rewire. From a shop.
I love to see those older boats get a new life. Good job!
I like the way you have done this one 👍great 👍👍👍 Quick recovery for the hand ....bet that f*^@ing hurt.
bro, can you do a shop tour. like how much space does one need to do a rebuild.
Here in Australia thats a $80K-$90K boat all day
💯
So out of curiosity when you get a super dirty boat…what do you use to clean it? Water/bleach or?
We need a picture of the final restoration.

i was scrolling to see this! Yes i want to know what the hours equal and was that 1 man hours or two mans hours ? plus over head ?
@UUBrahman From my understanding, it's 22k not 27k. The 5k line item is broken out on the right, not to be included again.
@@dmg46664 Yes, I double counted the electrical wiring line item. Thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing this !!!.
No problem 😊
156hrs? That seems so fast. I do airplanes now, kind of want to break into the boat industry
So with all the work you put in, is this going to be your forever boat?
Pretty sure he's selling it.

So when you out an amp in a boat with an alternator style charging system. Why do i get whine? Like static and cutting out when putting boat into gear. I have grounded out basically everything i can on the radio.
I live in the Bahamas. And I'm dying to find a boat even in this condition for $1000
Nice job!
I’m looking at purchasing a used boat myself but it has a inboard engine.
Can you convert an inboard to an outboard and do you recommend it?
lots of people do, they usually add a motor bracket or motor bracket /swim platform combo
On any boat I restore and sell .I have never made money when you add the hours in .
i award you number one boat restorer 2023!
Just kind of seems like he lost a ton of money on that deal your time must be worth next to nothing. You say you think the boat is worth about 25,000? You had 140 hours in that? That’s a lot of hours are a lot of money at $100 an hour
The sub, amp, radio, speaker, seablaze aren't necessities for "restoring" a boat. You could save a lot of money without that junk.
Could you please do one of these videos for a Bertram 28’ Flybridge before I go out and buy one?

wow only 1000 dollars!!! Boats in America are so much cheaper then in Europa
When you say you bought "romex 14-2" I hope you're mislabeling Anchor or the like, flat duplex wire...
Dang, I wanted it to keep going at the end
15:25 You used solid copper wire on a boat? Good luck with that. Did you use wire nuts as well? Geez...
Your qoute should have just been if you kept the Yamaha since that's what it had and it wasnt gonna be 11k
Romex! Tell me you just called it by the wrong name.
Makes me want to rethink my aquasport 222 I just gutted
