This was a great discussion that I think definitely needs to be had. Excited to see what Money Game part 3 is going to be.

They arranged this song for the Metallica Blacklist charity album for the 30th anniversary of the Black album. They arranged, recorded, mixed, and submitted their version of ES to the Blacklist team in 7 days. The studio song was recorded with Alessia Cara as this was a collaboration between TW and Alessia. Some of the background vocals you hear is Alessia from a backing track TW uses to play live.
The studio version was recorded during the pandemic, so TW were at home in Monterrey, MX; Alessia was in Canada; David Bendeth who mixed the song was in New Jersey, so everything was done remotely. When Alessia recorded her parts Matt Squire, who produced the song remotely took over Alessia's computer, as he was in Monterrey with TW. Alessia was going to go to Monterrey MX to record but couldn't due to the pandemic restrictions.

Sometimes it honestly takes a village. Not a bad thing. But I think quality sound engineers don't get the credit they deserve. The arrangement, though, is what's most impressive.

  • @jimlaheta8864

There is so much to love about how The Warning and Alessia Cara remade this iconic song - the reversal of the chord arrangement, the 'creepy lullaby' vibe, the time crunch, the first time meeting and collaborating between Alessia and The Warning, the remote collaboration during pandemic travel restrictions, and the shear fearlessness to carry all this out and send it to Metallica! Sure would have loved to seen Metallica's reaction!

There was undoubtedly post production, it was not recorded on a cell phone. From the multitude of perfect camera angles to the genuine quality sound it’s obvious this was set out to be a theater quality concert film. And it is. I can tell you though, when you’re standing right in front of them the sound is also amazing. They performed 2 shows this weekend and they use video and sound from both nights.

    • @mcflyjp

Well. Video editing and post sound production are two very different things. But yes, it's obvious there is some post audio engineering.

I've watched about every fan cam of them and they are that good live night in and night out and their sound engineer, Lalo Plaza, is top notch. Don't know how much post was done but the show was professionally filmed and recorded. They are like that whether in a club, small venue, larger venue, festival or stadium. Every song from that teatro metropolitan show is excellent. U gotta check out "more" & "evolve" from the MTV music video awards (VMA'S). Probably as good a performance as they've done. A one take performance.

@@mcflyjp In several interviews they said that their current album, Error, is the closest that they’ve ever gotten to their live show sound, but it’s still not there, yet. The frustrating thing is trying to get decent fan cam audio because The Warning’s wall of sound totally overdrives cell phone microphones.

DPA/TW and Alessia Cara certainly understood the assignment!
they had 10 days to rip this rendition of *Enter Sandman* from the ether and make it a darker, more eerie, and a more haunting lullaby than the original metal version... this was done because they, and many other artists from numerous genres, were invited by Metallica to take one of the songs from the original "Black" album, keep the lyrics and change it up how ever you like... play it backwards, upside down, whatever... this was all for the 30th anniversary of the "Black" album... all the submissions from 50someodd artists were put on the 2021 "The Metallica Blacklist" album... the proceeds from the album sales are split 50/50 with half going to Metallica's "All Within My Hands Foundation" and the other half being donated to a charity of the participating artists' choice...

I don't think there's much post-production on this - they have VERY good sound guys, they always sound great live. They do use backing tracks for some of the "accessory" parts (harmonies, special guitar effects sometimes, etc.), but it's all them even on the backing tracks (might be one exception on this tune, I think the "woah-oah-oah-ohs" were Alessia Cara on the backing track). But their live production is always top notch these days.

Audio was straight out of the sound board. What you heard is what everyone heard in that audience. This was a full production show, with the intention of making the full length recording in HDR 8.8k & HQ audio. Watching this on YT, isn't even near what the true recording looks/sounds like. Their super power is, they are a Studio quality live band. I didn't hear you mention it, but this was done from an invite, to be included on Metallica's 30th Anniversary Blacklist LP. Side 1, track 1. 21 more songs to checkout from this show alone. You coming back?

I can tell you with complete confidence that it is totally them, they only edited so that the public would not be heard so much in this song they using the backing track with the voice of Alessia for chors of course the tree can sing but the original it was with Alessia. I was lucky to be there that second night because the first day sold out very quickly and I saw many cameras I thought it was interesting I never thought it would be for posterity It was the first time I saw them live and it was surreal. I have videos of a few songs, they sound great, Daniela's voice is so powerful, the truth is that to sound like this, the 10 years of career are noticeable and they are so young. They have a great future!! Long life to The Warning!!!

The mixing was obviously post-production, but the audio was taken directly from the sound board (which is why you don’t hear a lot of crowd noise) plus they do use some stems and backing tracks for sound effects, keyboard, or in this case the background “Woh,oh,oh,ohs” which were performed by Alessia Cara who they originally collaborated with on the studio version. 👍😎

Whatever post production they may have done, they didn't clean things up. Dany's voice broke on a high note at the end of Martirio, and they didn't fix it. This is very much representative of what they sound like in person; they really are that clean.
If I recall correctly, Lalo Plaza (their sound person) joined up when he saw just how intense their work ethic is. Watching aftermovies from this year, he's treated as part of the family, along with the rest of their team; they go out and have fun together. Their technical staff (Carlos, Cachi, etc) are not anonymous people toiling in the background. Well, they are toiling in the background, but they aren't anonymous. They have a way of attracting top notch people to their team, which starts with them.

Every member of the stage crew is top notch. All are constantly paying attention to Pau's drum kit, because she has the tendency to beat it to death. Their first Muse concert they opened for in Mexico, Carlos was on stage behind a speaker, checking Pau's kit to make sure it was looking good, when Ale fell backwards on the stage. He was helping her up within 2 seconds.

I have to admit, I am not a Metallica fan, and I was sick of this song, until this version came along. A lullaby where Alessia very sweetly puts you to bed, then Dany rouses the troops, shares a little prayer, and the angel chorus comes to sing you to sleep, then Boom, the hammer drops. I think of this very much as the female version of the tale. So good. Delicate, powerful, soothing, strong, gentle, fierce-all at the same time. I love this one.

If I were producing the videos, I'd do some postproduction anyway, since what goes to the speakers at a concert where you need to tailor output to fit the acoustics of the hall generally isn't ideal for a video recording. I'm an old school Metallica fan. But unlike many old school Metallica fan, I actually like the Black album. However, Enter Sandman is one of my least favorite songs on the album. Probably just because it seems so commercial. IDK, maybe it just played out for me. but I LOVE this arrangement. These ladies have such incredible stage presence. I'm just blown away by them.
Not necessarily in the way they sound, but they remind me of The Pretty Reckless. Obviously because the female vocals, but they also both have such instantly recognizable and familiar songs. Post? This was obviously recorded extremely well in multitrack and then mixed and produced and mastered professionally. That being said, they did NOT go back and redo parts, fix vocals, etc…. At most they took the best section of each song from either of the two nights they performed this show, which is common sense. The warning does NOT fix their lives errors… they can’t, really, because there were tons of cell phone videos of these shows and would have proven if they edited any messed up parts out.

      1) this is essentially a blind reaction. I don't go looking for countless other videos and listen to them first.
      2) many artists when they release livr video releases do, in fact, redo parts in post.
      3) My initial thought was that they sounded incredible, so it's quite possible that there could've been post. But believed there wasn't.

After all this time, after all your reactions and you still don’t believe they are that good….. shame on you. Dany is not trying to emulate no one, you wasn’t expecting to be this good…. you need some therapy to help you with your entitlements….. with all respect.

This was my very first reaction? And never did I say I don't think they are good. I said they are awesome. Maybe you can't comprehend what I'm saying? 🤷🏽‍♂️
