  • In tonight's live stream, we will talk about the sub-genre of portal fantasy. And what its close cousin, isekai? We'll be tackling all of that and how Toby Fox crafted an excellent narrative with Deltarune and its characters!
We will also return to the topic from last week about tone vs atmosphere!

I remember hearing a little while ago, somebody said something along the lines of “you’re going to want to reflect the theme of your story in just the first chapter”.
And I remember somebody else say something similar, like “in the very first chapter, you’re making a promise to your readers. To do this, your first chapter should follow the narrative arc of your whole book, so that readers can look back and understand that this is what we were promised”.
The only issue is, I don’t know exactly how to do this with my peaceful first chapters.
How would you introduce something serious into a peaceful atmosphere without giving the readers whiplash?

You don't need to give them anything overtly foreboding. But within the first few chapters, you can leave clues that all might not be as great and good as it seems on the surface. A feeling, a premonition, perhaps something that should be working okay isn't all of a sudden, whispers about people far away doing something bad, stuff like that.

As was stated live, I'd like to join the Discord server. I'm assuming that involves an interview?

It does! It's fairly harmless. There's a few things that we want to know:
      1. What kind of story/stories are you working on?
      2. What kind of help are you looking for? What can we or other authors in our community probably provide?
      3. What are you willing to contribute to our discussions and to helping other writers with their projects?

      1. The types of stories I'm working on are ones in which I want to have deep and compelling characters, well-constructed plots, and important underlying themes expressed through the elements of the story.
      2. I would absolutely love help with world-building. I don't usually create worlds for my stories to take place in, but I would love some tips so that I can give it a try!
      3. I would love to contribute tips for symbolism, themeing, and character writing for other authors.
(I hope this response isn't too late... ^^' Also please let me know if I need to be more specific)
