Competitive Pokemon Singles is at almost the peak of its power in the format "Balanced Hackmons".
In this world, Pokemon can use just about any moves or abilities they like thanks to Hacks like Save editors.
The #1 Pokemon in this metagame is not a Powerful legendary as you might expect, it is actually Chansey.
Chansey can abuse Imposter to Transform into an enemy while maintaining its Enormous Base HP stat, and the defensive boosts from Eviolite.

Some will never figure out how to get Chansey in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Chansey Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Chansey Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.

Fun Fact: Imposter Chansey is partially responsible for the ban of Magnet Pull in the tier back in 2017. It's not the only reason people voted to ban Magnet Pull, but it is the funniest reason!
Since Imposter Chansey is so common (i.e. ~100% usage), some particularly devious fellows created a trap using Registeel. The Registeel would have two recovery moves, such as Roost and Shore Up, alongside both of the attacking moves that force your opponent to switch out: the Fighting-type Circle Throw and the Dragon-type Dragon Tail. Registeel was given the ability Magnet Pull along with the item Shed Shell, allowing it to switch out when trapped.
The strategy goes as follows:
1) Switch in Registeel
2) Use Circle Throw or Dragon Tail to switch in your opponent's Imposter Chansey.
...and just like that, you have already won the game.
Chansey will have Transformed into a Magnet Pull Registeel, but it won't have Shed Shell so it will remain trapped with 5 Circle Throws, 5 Dragon Tails, 5 Roosts, and 5 Shore Ups. The original Registeel, however, is allowed to switch out thanks to its Shed Shell item - and this is when it switches out into Magnet Pull Mimikyu.
With Mimikyu out, the trap has been sprung and there's no escape. Mimikyu's Ghost and Fairy typing makes it immune to being forced out by the newly-transformed Chansey's Circle Throw or Dragon Tail. From there, the plan is simple: Use Substitute to gain safety from status, use Ingrain so you cannot be forced to switch, use Accupressure 21 times to get +6 Attack/+6 Defence/+6 Special Attack/+6 Special Defence/+6 Speed/+6 Accuracy/+6 Evasion, and finally Baton Pass it to a teammate to sweep.
Chansey will have 20 moves before using Struggle (one of which is used when Registeel switches out), and then will have up to 5 Struggles before it KOs itself from recoil. Getting the Substitute, Ingrain, +6 in everything, and finally Baton Passing to a teammate only takes 24 turns, so you have plenty of time to set up everything you need before the pass.
Assuming that your opponent has no fainted Pokemon, there is a 1/5 chance to bring Chansey in whenever you use Dragon Tail or Circle Throw. No skill; all luck.
You don't even have to use a gimmicky Pokemon like Mimikyu - you could simply use 3 recovery moves with Circle Throw and Baton Pass to Magnet Pull Giratina, or use 3 recovery moves with Dragon Tail and Baton Pass to Magnet Pull Xerneas.
This is such a hyperspecific setup I'm actually dying with laughter lmaaaao
Dude that is actually wild, good read
that shit is straight diabolical for a goofy ahh fat kangaroo with eggs in his fucking belly and in an environment plagued with gods😭😭😭😭
Mimikyu is ghost fairy not dragon fairy
Magnificent. Thank you for sharing, very (jimothy) cool of you
fun fact, any mon with a specific item can abuse it with imposter, which is why pikachu technically has a niche since it can copy a mon except it has double offensive stats. there's also a pretty complex metagame around imposter and imposter proofing, where sweepers can either have sets designed to be easily countered by their teammates, or (usually by using a ghost type with a spooky/dread plate) you can 1v1 chansey since they aren't holding a plate, which is why zoroark-hisui is viable since it can run a simple no retreat set with astral barrage, boomburst and dark type judgement which is a lot better coverage than other imposter proof sweepers. but chansey has adapted to this, if you were paying attention at the start you saw that one of chansey's 3 best items was spooky plate which is meant to catch these ghost types off guard
But Zoro-H is immune to Ghost attacks. How's Chansey answering it?
There's also the ol' reliable sub/shed tail
@@enoyna1001 zoro-h is also good for that reason, but if it became too common chansey would run dread plate, which is still good enough to deal with other ghosts but prevents zoroark from ruining you. it's more of an uncommon tech than a meta strategy, when i said chansey had adapted i meant to ghosts not zoroark
I personally prefer a torch song or clangorous soul set with vocal spray and unburden, on a ghost mon, if you find an opportunity you boost, best case you sweep, worse case you bait in the Chansey and 2 hit ok them since the unburden speed boost cannot be copied by impostor, leaving the path open for any other dedicated boost sweeper you might have
so chancey with plates instead of eviolite is still used over blissey ig to hide information about the item?

There's one pesky egg among us.
I feel like I should bring up a pretty big topic that wasn't mentioned about Imposter Chansey, or Imposter as a whole for the matter.
For a lot of new players, Imposter seems uncharacteristically broken in Balanced Hackmons for the same reasons you gave. It lets you cheat matchups with a better copy of the opponent's Pokemon, invalidates setup sweeping, and feels mindless and uncompetitive at the worst of times, so how is it allowed?
Easy, it's because Imposter acts as a skill check.
For one, without Imposter the tier would just become a hyper-offense hell where the first player to set up their broken sweeper with no possible switchins wins. At worst, Imposter is a necessary evil for the tier to even function.
More importantly, Imposter-proofing is when you build your sweeper (like the Arceus-Ghost running Spooky Plate + Judgement), or even the entire team, to fully counter itself when copied off Imposter, and this has a MASSIVE effect on how impactful Imposter is and how teams are built. The threat of Imposter ironically promotes better team and moveset compositions by forcing players to manage their own threats and thus have a wider net of things to cover in the meta, promoting even more diversity despite how overcentralizing it seems. Put simply: If your team automatically loses to just an Imposter Chansey, odds are it was never a good team to begin with.
It's best to think of it like GSC Snorlax, where, yeah it's obscenely overpowered in the tier it resides in, but the meta would be FAR worse if it weren't there.
this type of tech is beyond surface level, people that want to learn more about the meta will easily find it, and it's really a sight to behold (like, wandering spirit is a meta ability)
that's really interesting, could you explain how GSC Snorlax fills a similar role?
@@tecul1 core enforcer, gastro acid?
@@ThistlewickTheGhostGSC snorlax is the jack of all trades. You let it do its thing, it’ll completely barrel you over. However just like imposter chansey, you have to build your team to stop basically every lax set, like imposter proofing, normal resists are a necessity to phase lax out from curse sweeping. Without lax, special attackers would completely dominate the tier and zapdos would also immediately get banned if lax gets banned, similar to how imposter chansey stops the tier from turning into HO spam. Then the tier would turn into stall because not only is lax one of the best special walls, but it’s also the best offensive mon at making progress against every mon.
@@zuils awesome, thanks!
Surprised you didn't mention "Imposter Proofing", basically for every Pokemon on your team, you need counterplay to them in case your opponent tries to copy them with Chansey. This is especially important with sweepers. A Ghost type with Spooky Plate and Judgement works well, as the Chansey's Judgement will be Normal-Type, making you immune. Another thing I've seen is running a Steel-Type that can't touch your Magnet Pull mon. If your opponent ever tries to copy it, you can trap it for free
this type of tech is beyond surface level, people that want to learn more about the meta will easily find it
Too much to talk about
This new alliance might prove to be rather powerful. I am hoping Macargo and Quagsire know what's right.
real
I hope quagsire doesn't realise that he can easily overthrow macargo with a combination of water and ground type moves.
there must be betrayal somewhere, they arent even horses.
I miss the days of Blue Shrek. The imposterproof Toxic Orb, Poison Heal, Quiver Dance + King's Shield Primal Kyogre that had Scald and Leech Seed, so you'd easily beat Chansey. Now people just use Heart Swap or Spectral Thief to take your boosts :(
my favorite acronym this gen has to be "wasp stall"
@@tecul1 what does wasp stall mean please?
@@misters6749WASP stands for Wandering Spirit
the idea is that Wandering Spirit activates on RegenVest pokemon, who runs multiple contact moves such as U-Turn or Knock Off, and this stealing their Regenerator and denying them recovery while getting free recovery yourself. Usually it's done on stall (hence, WASP stall) because you can use the ability to steal Regenerator to punish Imposter, who otherwise would farm recovery off of your own RegenVests with little you can do due to being a Stall team (you can't offensively Imposter-proof them)
It stands for Wandering Spirit, an ability that was experimented with and is now a firm part of the meta as per this post EDIT it won't show, but post 760 of the BH thread on smogon that's link in the description
To be fair, because Ditto always runs 252 HP, it often does have more HP than some of the frail offensive threats it copies, like Gengar.
Can't Chansey just do that too?
In balanced hackmons, you have all 252.@@212mochaman
Topsy-Turvy was a life saver playing around in Hackmons. Majority of hacked monsties grabbing for the powerful boosts, so suddenly turning it into debuffs cripples a lot of them.
The screwier alternative is Heart Swap, allowing you to steal all the opponent's Stat increases leaving them with nothing.
As well this can still be usable even if the opponent doesn't set up as you can run self debuffing moves like Close Combat, or take debuffs the opponent uses on you like with Strength Sap, then Heart Swap to give them all the stat reductions instead. 😈

I always found it funny how one of Blissey's most iconic moves is one almost no one has gotten without hacking.
Dude same here! I was like why are they ranking difficulty of hacking event mons??
hey there! as a bh main, you did a pretty good job at explaning of why imposter chansey is arguably the best mon in bh. i have a small nitpick though is that during your example of chansey vs. arceus-ghost, arceus-ghost almost always runs spooky plate, and the one arceus-ghost that doesn't runs itemless poltergeist. spooky plate + judgement retains ghost type for arceus but turns into normal for chansey, and itemless means arceus is immune to poltergeist but imposter isn't due to it holding eviolite. basically, this is not a good example because a well played chansey is switching into arceus-ghost exclusively to scout it's moveset and sometimes to PP stall, and never to reverse sweep like you showed in the video as it physically cannot unless if you're running a bad arceus-ghost.
Chansey is the reason I only play "balanced" hackmons on low ladder
Chansey is a big part of the format being balanced tho. If your team loses to it, it wasn't a good team to begin with. "Improofing" is arguably the most important thing in the format lol
Cuz u make a team full of setup sweepers with no Improofing
Evolite works after transform? The more you know
Now if only Metal & Quick Powder works that way too.
Yeah. Items' effects are USUALLY tied to the transformed Pokemon's original form (exceptions being Metal and Quick Powder, as @lyndontan2260 said). It's cool for Balanced Hackmons, but it can put a damper on what would be some very funny cheese, like if you have your Ditto hold a Thick Club and transform into Marowak, it won't apply the Thick Club boost. Same story for stuff like Light Ball, Stick, etc.
light ball too
what about booster energy
@@Magikarpadortransform does not copy booster energy boost
Fun Fact! In the highest level of PURE hackmons (Gen 7) chansey is still one of the best mons. It uses two different sets though. This one bc boosting sweepers are even stronger in pure hackmons. But also a set with inards out as an ability, which is designed to kill a sweeper that had gotten to strong. Funny how it’s one of the most slap-able mons to add onto a team in both formats!

Some might say that chansey is the true work horse of balanced hackmons
really good video, i would like to say tho rn id probably personally say eternatus is #1 over chansey in the current meta (but generally yes chansey is #1). eternatus has the stats and typing to fill every niche on a team (there is a reason its viable with fur coat, unaware, regenerator, magic guard, beads of ruin etc etc) alongside being splashable, while chansey takes up a team slot in a metagame where you have to prep for so much. chansey is really best when you dont need to use all 6 slots, but when you have to prepare for ash greninja and its 3 equally broken sets, mglo dragon energy mons, mortal spin, magic guard spam, mega garchomp, kyurem black, rain etc etc, fitting chansey on a team is just really difficult to do consistently.
there was this rain craze at one point it's pretty crazt

Not far off; it's actually one of the most powerful Pokémon in non-hacked matches as well, using most of the same traits.
"Who are you?"
Impostor chancey: "I'm you, but better"
if you have a powerful ghost type like flutter mane or calyrex shadow, you can give it normalize, giveit the spooky plate or ay other playe that isnt fighting, and give it judgement, this means that judgement wll be ghost type despite the ability normalize while the chansey that copied you is stuck with all nornal type moves with its eviolite, although blissey with spooky plate/dark plate can counter this.
You don't need to give it Normalize, Judgement is already Normal-type without the Plate. The only thing it would change is whether or not your coverage gets turned into Normal type anyways, but you can always just run only Judgement/Multi-Attack+Fighting move to stuff Imposter.
Also, Caly-S is banned lmao.
@@user-wz7ji6vs7m i didnt know that, i havent played in so long, also, are you dumb? if your judgement is normal type then how will you hit the imposter pokemon, who is ghost type, with the normal type judgement use your brain, you need spooky plate or dread plate to make it super effective, while they can't hit you cuz they're probably eviolite
Chansey is the number one hacked pokemon in the entire game…..
It is ranked above multiple powerful legendaries, including Eternatus, Miraidon, and Necrozma-Ultra.
For beating imposter you can make a team that depends on judgement or multi-attack with memories or plates to be able to even hit yourself. Since items are not copied over it'll mean that the transformed chansey will be using a normal type move instead of a powerful stab or super effective move. Going with a moveset using things like collision course and judgement for attacking moves while being ghost type means the transformed chansey wont be able to attack and will be forced to switch out or later forced to struggle if it's still alive that is.

For that you just give it Innards Out as an ability. All damage done by a killing blow is dealt to the attacker, which for a boosted mon like that is any move.

Balanced Hackmons is such a fun set of formats. I played Gen 7 BH, and honestly, it's a lot of fun, because the way that Gen 7 worked, things could be absolutely goofy.
My memory of this format is of it being mostly defined by Sturdy Shedinja, not because there weren't ways to deal with it but because so much of the metagame came down to counters, counter-counters, counter-counter-counters...
That was a few years ago, so I assume it must have been banned at some point.

but the real threat of chansey is that it doesn't need to be eviolite, it can also be lucky punch for a 50% chance of critical hit, choice scarfed and can bluff holding any of these items, while blissey is stuck with leftovers, heavy duty boots or choice scarf and doesn't lead to that much mindgames in comparison. there's even a case to be made for any arceus plate that allows to hit a pokemon with normalize
(there used to be in previous generations normalize sets that would rely on multi-attack instead of judgment, so too were the rare dark/ghost memory chanseys.)

The enemy Arceus fairy also has pixilate
Balanced Hackmons can have Wonder Guard and it not be OP; Ability clause + Tie the 1HP to the ability rather than Shedinja. Whether it's Dark, Fire or Fairy, every type combo has at least one weakness and any team that can't do indirect damage with spikes, burn/poison/confusion etc is probably not very well built anyway
Despite what the metagame sounds like balanced hackmons still strictly adheres to whats possible in the actual games, if you gen the pokemon in with pkhex you could play the metagame on a real cartridge.
This extends to the scopes of ROM hacking and is thus not allowed to be considered in the first place. Also it would just make the game confusing as beginners would go "why does my WG mon have 1 HP"
@@rightclicker_5306 I think if they're doing Pokémon Showdown they know enough to infer why their Pokémon with Wonder Guard has 1HP. I think I was mistaken with how Hackmons works, I was probably thinking something more along the lines of Any Pokémon Any Ability or something. I made this comment because I've been playing Pokémon Infinite Fusion and this is how that game balances Wonder Guard. I inferred pretty much instantly why Wonder Guard was conferring my Pokémon with 1HP
@@gamerxavier8Still wouldn't be allowed because
1. it's ROM hacking as I mentioned
2. it's a complex unban and complex bans/unbans are to be avoided in tiering philosophy whenever possible.
3. it just... doesn't add anything positive to the tier. consider like BW excadrill where spinning became impossible without it, wg in bh comes with no positive upsides and all the downsides (major MU fish, stupidly centralizing, not even mentioning you're locking them to 1HP which allows for some serious Endeavor shenanigans)
I mean thats not how it works ingame, so it wouldnt really work here. Also, it would still be pretty overpowered probably, since you can use taunt on an air balloon regieleki (or dont, ground attacks arent TOO common), and become effectively immune to a lot of things, obviously not moongheist tho. Other than that, you could maybe use idk a fast normal type with wonderguard or something, its still strong.

Here’s an idea: arceus ghost with simple, no retreat, EQ, Espeed, and triple arrows (or stronger equivalents). The, also on your team, you have a ghost with levitate. Now, when chancey comes in on boosted arceus, you are trading your arceus for their chancey, and you can probably even use it as boost fodder for your ghost-levitate mon.
precipice blades, but that is an idea yes
Imposter switch in doesn't copy no retreat trap
@@Munby1 that’s crazy
It would be cool to use a Chansey with fur coat and foul play or something, but it sucks to know that most of the ideas I come up with in this format are overshadowed by something crazy like this.
the other seen chansey set is magic guard with a recovery move, teleport, ruination, and any miscellaneous support move, due to the concept of sap blocking
The KH2 music is here, I was just thinking the other day it'd be a good fit for your ladder videos.
jimothycool is just too cool tbh
I just want to share that the first and only time I ever tried balanced hackmons, I was swept by the notorious trickster Foonguss. I believe the set had something to do with giving the opponent Truant and then clicking protect and strength sap. The more you know, folks.
They should make a "Balanced Hackmons UU" where it's everything that is balanced hackmons but it's only UU and lower Pokemon
They already have BHUU, which acts like UUbers, where anything above a certain usage cutoff in BH is banned.
Imprison + trap + transform is very funny combo, force your opponent to struggle
Imprision is actually banned because it beats imposter and haze. basically just have a mon with imprison, haze, maybe victory dance, just any setup move, and power trip, probably with simple as an ability. Its technically beatable, but to beat it you have to play inoptimally.
I love this format I remember using a all imposter team with pikachu for light ball since it stills gives double Attack and spA which makes some funny interactions
Speaking counterplay, there's very little to Impostor directly either. Substitute blocks Impostor, as does Illusion. Illusion is ironically one of the few things in Hackmons that's consistently banned, though. (It'd be hilarious if you could predict switch a pursuit-- also unavailable-- trapper in under the cover of Illusion, but c'est la vie)
I love hearing about these weird formats! Eviolite Chansey was already pretty good before Imposter!
I always read Entrainment as Entertainment. I've been a fool for so long....
she keeps up this act and she'll be bansey soon if you catch my drift
I wish I could go in and out and never run out of PP like Chansey :(
I play balanced hackmons and my entire team is built around setting up a substitute for my Ultra Necrozma to use No Retreat with Simple and proceed to sweep with Stored Power (+20 damage for each of your stat boosts) and coverage moves
Isn't Substitute banned in gen 9 BH?
balanced hackmons continues to amaze me
I don’t get why they don’t ban imposter. Like this is literally every generation it’s in at this point. I get maybe the “it is an anchor for the meta” thing applying here, but it really is silly how they just blatantly let this happen every time.
it's akin to gsc snorlax in this way, if it was scrutinized under current tiering philosophy it would certainly be suspected but back when bh was created in gen 5 the tiering was much more lax and now the wider bh community has accepted it as a mostly good part of the metagame
@@tecul1 yeah I was aware of that potentially, hence why I mentioned it, I just think its stupid. I mean... EVERY generation? really? You can compare it to gen 2 snorlax all you want but imagine if something like it existed in every single fucking generation of OU, that would be terrible and asinine and I shouldn't even have to say that.
also its just that its inherently stupid and suffocating. its not like other overcentralizing mons where theoretically tides could turn to make them less dominate. The principle of Imposter chansey 99% of the time is "any mon in the game potentially+250 HP and 1.5 in each defense". Like its such and intuitively unfair thing to have in the game.

Hacking discontinued event pokemon for collecting purposes and NOT for competitiveness is 100% JUSTIFIED. Gamefreak is enabling hacking on a grand scale if they keep doing this.
Looks like you could also use Blissey as well with a choice scarf and Pikachu with a Light Ball and have three insanely busted imposter mons lol.
1) Scarf isn't great for Imposter because it locks you into a move, meaning you lose PP a lot faster.
2) Pikachu means if you lose the speed tie you probably just die, and you're much weaker to revenge killers.
3) As most teams have multiple Imp Proofs for each mon, I don't think stacking a bunch of Imp mons is a great idea.
@@user-wz7ji6vs7m I feel 2 to 3 but scarfed ditto works even in AG and Ubers so IDK about the first part.

1) Sunsteel Strike, Teravolt, Mold Breaker, and Turboblaze also bypass Wonder Guard, and you can always use moves to change their ability like Worry Seed or Entrainment.
2) Spore is a move that exists, and is given to everyone because it's PH.
The only ruleset regigigas has a real chance in
Groudon: Is pronounced Grudon
Furfrou: Is pronounced Furfrow
This is insane
I remember I was playing hackmons with a freind and I used a full blissey team and I swept with there regieleki and they got so mad by it they blocked me and we never talked again
If hacked mons can have any moves doesn't this mean all of them can learn high horse power and our horses perhaps we need a new definition on what makes a horse
Genesis supernova alakazam with expanding force
Few issues with that.
1) Genesis Supernova isn't in the game anymore.
2) There's a clause in NDBH that stops you from just using a Z-Move without its Crystal, it forces you to have the base move and the crystal, and use the Z like normal.
3) Because you do it like this, you can't use Psychic+Mewnium Z on a MZam to get Genesis Supernova, because only Mew can use the Mewnium.
@@user-wz7ji6vs7m I mean in gen 7, no expanding force
@@MegaManXmyBeloved I still think the issues with Z-Crystals will remain there, can't remember though.
Do people ever run both Chansey and Blissey?
magcargo tera grass incoming... i'm telling you
my friend had a hacked chansey on cartridge when I was a kid if I'm not mistaken ahsodif in pokemon alpha sapphire hasoidf
also I'm always quite happy to see chansey win where blissey can't haoisdf I never liked blissey as a kid haha
Gife gastrodon scald and wouldn't be broken but so much better then in gen9... so sad, why they removed scald from my favorite water type🤧
Kinda weird that eviolite works after a transformation
Idk I think Togetic would win against Chansey, with its incredible 40 base attack and Hustle ability.
Technically not infinite
