Hey everyone, so as some people already said in the comments, I messed up a few things in the video. So I put them all down in a list to hopefully clarify those mistakes, I'll update the list if any more are brought up, but other than that the rest of the video should be fine. (Hopefully) Thanks to those who brought it up in a nice and informative manner. Also to those who brought up some interesting gems that had ragdolls in them. Mistakes & Clarifications -First video game with authentic ragdoll physics is Jurassic Park Trespasser (1998). -There were much more games with ragdolls before Halo Combat Evolve. -CDs were more prominent than Floppy Discs for PCs in the 2000s. -Minesweeper XP wasn't the smallest version as there was one for Windows 3.0 that was 51KB.
The original Halo didn't have ragdolls, just death animations. I played it a lot back in the day. I believe Halo 2 did have ragdolls, though. I played a lot of sumotori dreams in 2010 in the dorms; my roommate and I loved the level with the table that you could fall onto like Chris Farley. I also played Tricky Truck by the same dev.
Hi there! Been working on my own video about SD (this video has been pretty useful to me thus far) and I happened to notice a few inaccuracies: -The gameplay shown at 7:37 was not of SD's debut, rather Archee showing off the Breakpoint 2007 build at Breakpoint 2008. -There was music in said 2007 build, as well as the "Hidden Part" (but with the grey guy instead of the blue guy) -The "Full" version released in December 2009 was not 100 kilobytes, it seems to be 380.9. The Steam release is about 1.2MB -The full 2009 release was not free (a license key in USD was $4.50, which is $6.61 adjusted for inflation) but you could download it without paying and be limited to 7 seconds per round, basically making any maps besides the default dojo pointless -Archee didn't release the "code" for the game, technically speaking, but a template text file from which to build levels and import them into the game. I know a couple of these are nitpicks but it's better to be over-informed than under-informed, no? (this isn't a dig at you, I just don't have any other way of saying it)
Thanks for the corrections! I'll be honest my research for this video wasn't that thorough because I was rushing to get it out (I even got the wrong first person game at the beginning) but I'm glad you were able to provide some extra info as well. I'm always looking to improve my content and I'm glad that my video was still helpful for you. I wish you luck on your SD video!
"The earliest example of ragdolling in a game was in Halo: Combat Evolved". I must of dreamt titles like Jurassic Park: Trespasser, or Edgar Torronteras' Extreme Biker... 🤣
CE didn't even have ragdolls, they just played one of two death animations. CE's physics engine was still custom and is mostly just spheres and boxes (yes it is mentioned in the video that it's pre-rendered, but I don't think those are physics based animations, I think they're just keyframed unless there's a source claiming otherwise)
Jurassic Park: Trespasser I knew from a video but didn't use because it was more about human ragdolls, but Edgar Torronteras' Extreme Biker is completely new.
My little brother and i spent many hours playing sumotori together, i haven't seen him in years so thanks for reminding of our fun together as kids :)@Cattdude
@@Nekkodude Yup! Max Payne 2 specifically even uses the same physics engine that Valve used as a basis for VPhysics; Havok Physics. And it came out a year prior!
Oh my god I remember playing this when I was at a friends house (we haven't talked to eachother in 10 years) and have been wondering what the game was ever since then
If you enabled Broadsword in Quake3Arena IdTech 3 games you also had pseudo ragdolls, but they really were realtime approximations baked right in the engine, same as Halo CE
I absolutly love ragdolls, if there is a game with a fun ragdoll physics system it always becomes one of my favourites, also i remember playing sumotori dreams and even watching youtubers play the game.
thanks for reminding me this game existed lmao I played this as a kid and it was so fun, really interesting to learn some more about the story behind its creation!
Knowledge of this game is news to me since I somehow haven't heard of it until very recently. Still you made a good informative video of an otherwise trippy-looking game that doesn't appear to have much at first glance, along with introducing another game, too. Quality's improving, too, overall so keep it up, my dude! Honorable mentions from me when it comes to ragdolls would be GTA 4. It never gets old.
Oh my god, watching your video pop up in my feed really did unlock memories of me playing this game when I was a lot younger. Video was great btw! I'm happy to have found your channel too, keep it up!
thank you so much for your research 3 days ago I started becoming obsessed with Sumotori Dreams again for some reason and I really wanted more information I'm so happy I found your video thank you
Oh yeah I watched a video about it, but I didn't include it in this video because I was leaning towards human body ragdolls. I probably should've added it though to give more context.
Good video. On Windows a lot of executable bloat actually comes from the C standard library, because a copy is included in every executable unless you tell the compiler to not do that. Using Windows' own libraries doesn't have the same result, as they aren't copied but linked. Also executables sometimes contain debug info, and some optimizations may take up more code space. After cutting those out, it gets more difficult to reduce size, like the procedural textures mentioned in the video.
Thanks! And thanks for more insight on the optimization. I was actually kind of hesitant to do a video on this because I'm not that good with coding yet so it's nice to hear some more info on this stuff.
I remember another game the developers os sumotori dreams made. It was called something like “goofball”. The game was a ragdoll football game with some extra modes in there too. I remember downloading the lite version on my old tablet because the trailer they used for the game was a gameplay video from markeplier.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAa I DIDN'T EXPECT TO FIND SOMETHING I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR AN ENTIRE DECADE TO SHOW UP IN MY RECOMMENDATIONS OUT OF NOWHERE, THANK U SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!11!1
Dude I SWEAR TO GOD IVE PLAYED THAT. I remember playing it on my phone. Or i was very young, so maybe I actually was just watching youtube vids of it and I remember it wrong
This is a wonderfully presented video. Hopefully, we get to see a Sumotori Dreams 2 in the future (which also uses a similar editor to Tricky Machines).
Whoops guess I missed that, I only used the XP version as reference since that's the one most people know about, and the base Sumotori game is still 29 KB, but thanks for letting me know.
