You should always have a paper map, preferably laminated or on rain resistant paper, when hiking. Having offline maps is helpful, but it doesn't help much if you're in a GPS deadzone, you run out of batteries or the phone is damaged.
While I agree with you, online map is basically paper map. A small power bank with solar panel (pocket size) can keep your phone on indefinitely. Phone is just more compact and easier. That said you should have paper as backup if your in road trip you never done before or wilderness.
This is so true. Just last week, I was heading to a pizza shop to pick up some speciality flour, and about two days later, I received a message from Google asking that I rate my experience and food at that pizza place. I didn't even eat there. My privacy is irrelevant, but I'm not fond of this.
A friend of mine was driving up to a city from another city. His phone rang and it said there was a sales on at Kohls at exit 33 ahead. He was very puzzled then remembered that he drove there with his wife in the other city, while she was shopping there he went to a pizza place, ON FOOT. I never have my location on or data on unless I have to use the phone for a particular reason and it's on airplane mode most of the day. No problems for me.
Openstreetmap has trails and ways in their routing, that dont exist in any other maps. I'm helping OSM width their map by adding Ways, Paths and other data. Everyone can do this.

Some people probably don't realize you can still buy road atlases and state and city maps in bookstores. And those visitor centers at state borders often have maps in them.
I was a user of OSMAnd for quite some time until I discovered Magic Earth, now this is my preferred map app....and it's privacy friendly too ! Tnx for the video...thumbs up !

I am a 59 year-old non-geek and because of what I have already seen and experienced, and because of what I have learned from yourself and Rob Braxmann, I have recently loaded an S5 Galaxy with LineageOS and am taking my first tentative steps into a Google-free life. Navigation is my big concern, especially as I am a recent immigrant into a Western European country from Southern Africa. I have installed OSMAnd and now Organic Maps to see how well they perform. Tomorrow is the first test. I don't need all the bells and whistles that GMaps offer, but I do need to get to where I need to go. I do have 2 proper paper maps with me at all times as well as a small expedition Garmin GPS. I should be ok.

@@sl4983 Yeh...navigation was a big problem. Nothing worked as well as Google Maps. OSMAnd was a fail. I bought a Garmin GPS, installed it on the windscreen and it has basically solved the navigation problem in large part. LineageOS is excellent. I use my Googled phone only for RUclips and only on Wi-Fi. Its liberating to have all the apps I want without once giving my email address or otherwise identifying myself. Also...battery life without Google is remarkable...sometimes as much as 4 days. No regrets.
I use a several years old version of waze as it's amazingly smooth and fast and doesn't make my phone heat up and drain battery like mad. Used to use an old version of maps until it self disabled and forced me to update. The update was so bad it made my phone heat up like a runaway reactor and shut off.

You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs: if you want (free) services, you'll have to relinquish something, if only for purely technical reasons and not necessarily for "tracking" (Google Maps has over 150 million monthly users, quite useless and nearly impossible to manage for nominal tracking). Besides, even Apple tells a lot of tales, just to do the opposite afterward, like allowing app developers to collect data from its 1bn iPhone users for targeted advertising (source:: computerworld, jan 7 2022). I first learned how to use a map in high school using a topographical map which carried over into being a soldier. As an over-the-road driver 1991-2018 I used road maps in an atlas plus I have a collection of city maps. Plus I still recall how to get to places I went to pretty often.

Also, Google, in its privacy policy, states that it does not sell user data. However, nothing can be said about sharing with third parties like intelligence agencies.
The problem with OpenStreetMap is that it's useless in most rural areas. Missing streets, missing house numbers, missing everything. In large metropolitan areas it's better. In general, I highly doubt any privacy statements of any company or place is trustworthy. If any government/law enforcement agency comes knocking, they all give your data away. On top of that, cell providers also sell your location, complete with identity data. Some stores like Walmart also track each and every cellphone location within in their stores, and use various means to associate that with specific customers. There is only one way to avoid getting tracked: Don't use cellphones of any kind, don't use computers, don't drive a car and pay for everything with cash. Even then, you're not completely in the clear due to the pervasive use of cameras in public spaces.

I always comment and like when Naomi talks about privacy =) However, I lost many of my inherent skills by (ab)using such an app - any of them - for directions. Therefore, I realy enjoy finding the way on my own and ask people when I possibly get lost. Sure, you are faster than me most of the time - especially in unfamiliar places. But boy it is so satisfying to find the way on your own! Try it ;)
No, it's time and energy consuming, frustrating and annoying to others because everyone know you could use maps. I prefer doing something that is real beneficial and get satisfied by that instead. Also, i think these privacy discussions and sensitivities are becoming something like a OCD for many people. Why would an advertiser want to pay for advertisement if the ad can't be effective and shown to right people? And if they won't pay, how Mrs. Naomi is gonna create content for "free" for you and me? What's so much wrong with delivering ads to right people? Can't they keep themselves from buying stuff? If it's so, then the problem isn't the ad in the first place.

I have found that Google maps sometimes can't read a map. There have been many times, when clients have used Google maps to come to my office, and Google maps have sent them to the opposite side of the city.
Those privacy awareness claimed by Apple are mostly an act of faith. Apple says that iPhone do not send data to its server or it sends it anonymaized but there is no way to check that claim.
The reason people know is because apple has given access to that information. So we do actually know they’re not saving the data in this instance of maps.
I prefer offline gps maps like TomTom and Garmin. These also work when there is no internet connection and it is never good to be dependend on mobile internet when you're lost.
I travel so much I have to use Google maps otherwise I’ll be lost all over the place - That’s what I plan on using going to Cleveland tomorrow…. I kept my physical map. Got one of the entire United States it is a privacy nightmare…. Often times I find it open when I don’t want it open and I feel them sneak in through all my trips

I have mapped over 300k Openstreetmap items over 5 years. Google maps is soo bad with amenity placement accuracy. I started when bitcoin was 6$ joke. Hindsight I should've been buying BTC but osm was so mentally rewarding. If I read the bitcoin white paper back then I'd probably do both, and now would host OSM tiles for Poland on a beefy server

We can’t know for certain, even with open source code if you’re not auditing and compiling it yourself there’s an element of trust. So we look to what researchers uncover and release and make decisions based on information available and track records.
One should also always carry a compass and abacus for optimal direction accuracy and time/distance calculations while travelling. That said, there are some privacy considerations to be taken seriously from the perspective of satellite imagery while you are using these manual devices.
Well to be honest, if everyone is so worried about sitting on the toilet in front of everyone they’d just stop going to the bathroom, right? But instead they close the door. Same thing for cell phones. Just because you have one doesn’t mean you have to give away 100% of your privacy. You can take measures (like choosing certain apps over others) to protect your privacy.
Even without privacy issues, I find digital maps absolutely intolerable. They don't give me the 'overall big picture' that my brain needs to actually SEE how to get from point A to my destination, let alone the ability to view all the other optional routes! You have to zoom in so far to see street names that you can't see what roads the street connects to. It's like wearing a blindfold and trusting someone to lead you by the hand, except that that person is a single-minded idiot who doesn't know that you need to avoid a recently blocked road, or that you'd prefer to turn left at intersections with lights, instead of trying to cross and turn onto a very busy, multi-lane road. It's also irritating to have dozens of irrelevant businesses marked on the map instead of just the destination(s) that I need, and the road names!
Google maps is OK for getting a rough idea of time/distance for a journey but rubbish at actually getting you there. I always use a proper sat-nav for the actual drive. I find it prevents me from throwing my phone out of the window when google takes me round in a circle or gets me totally lost.
Do I want client data ( When my services were provided to a particular address ) sold to potential competitor wishing to analyze the local market ? Such data was collected in my industry by users of an auto diagnostic tool, and the company went in and competed against the very dealers using it....... just an example of the risk of data collection.
The forest service has great Free vehicle use maps for every national forest. just go in and ask. I worked for the Mt. St. Helens Monument HQ and always gave them to people coming in. Electronic maps are not dependable in the forest.
For me Petal Maps is the best. It shows you the car when you are at the crossroads in 3D, the voice is sooo much smoother and gentle. I'm not going back to G maps.
Woah, She dropped the ball in this one. No Mention of Here Maps (here we go). They allow you FULLY OFFLINE USE. No account needed. Preloaded POIs and Here is former Nokia maps but also same as Navteq. I like using them for Interstate travel, because you can DOWNLOAD OFFLINE whole states or even countries.

Yes, to clarify what Naomi said, osmand repository is updated to reflect changes on openstreetmap monthly. By default it's up to the user to do manual update when needed. In osmand plus there's an option to turn on live updates to immediately patch in updates from openstreetmap (I don't find that necessarry)
Also an advice: When downloading maps in the offline maps menu, it may be difficult to find relevant map by region name in some countries. Just holding finger on undownloaded region gives you option to download the map.

Magic Earth is the way to go. I wish it were open source, but OSMAND is mostly unusable as a daily driver. If you can manage with OSMAND, more power to you, but I have wasted hours on the road, lost because of OSMAND multiple times. Magic Earth isn't perfect but its functionality is way beyond OSMAND and also can work offline if needed.
Google Maps gave me the wrong directions for the 3rd time yesterday-actually switched to Apple Maps to get the right directions.Google Maps is a done deal, even more so after seeing this.
I remember printing MapQuest directions from Las Vegas to LA. There was always a wrong turn, somewhere. Then I remember trying to use MapQuest on- line on a Google 7 (?) tablet. It would run out of power, not even halfway. We did not have oodles of cords and charger accessories back then. Finally, we made the trip with a plugged in Tablet. Made it all the way to our destination. I have been using Google Maps. Now I am learning to use Waze. We will see....
I can't remember the amount of times I have stopped at a petrol station to ask the attendant for directions .They would always have a map book under the counter for such lost people lol. Now no one owns a paper map
Problem is, that most people only want to carry a minimal of gear, so the phone is the most useful and easily device to have, so most GPS devices has stopped being manufactured. Myself, when I was backpacking used a Garmin GPS device with satellite subscription, but haven't used that in years. Phone is much easier to carry and the interconnectivity of the Continental US makes using its' map function work almost as well as a GPS device.
I still use an old TomTom gps when driving out of town. Still good and functional (and it is possible to updated it online to get new map info). Can be used in places without cellphone signal.
I still use my trusty and small eTrex 30x GPS, which operates forever on two-AA batteries and are easily replaced if need be. I also use Backroads Maps which are as good as can be and very private, too.
Back in the 70s/80s/90s i used to travel for work all over Great Britain using only a paper book of maps before I set off. Could get from home in the North to any specific destination _address_ in 6 instructions or less. That does assume common sense starts like for london go via M1, for Exeter go via M5, for Wales go via M4, for Liverpool/Manchester/Leeds/Hull go via M62, but after that 6 notes scribbled before I set off dropped me right at the office/factory I needed. Now with PRAT-NAV🤬 I get sent down any number of narrow farm tracks little better - and narrower - than private driveways.

Apple is a garbage company. They hold your digital purchases hostage behind their security requirements. Like to recover my old apple ID, I have provide them with the debit/credit card I originally used. Something that got replaced and hasn't been used in years. There is no way for me to come up with that information. Same issue with using my phone number at the time. I don't recommend and WILL NEVER use Apple products again!
I've always been a android user, at the end of 2022, my android phone quit working. I decided to buy a iphone 14. Use it for about 3 months and couldn't wait to get rid of it and apple's soul sucking eco system. As of March 23, I've been back with android. Better experience, less hassle and less money spent on the phone every month than apple was.
I was going to delete my location data from google, but before you press the button, google gives you a historic list of all the places you have been, which actually makes you think... that if one day I would like to re-visit what I did on that trip or holiday, its a useful thing to have. I kept it.

Almost everything is dine on your device, except when you're using real-time traffic ...the traffic data is anonymous. It runs, at your choice, with offline maps, so doesn't need any internet connection, for "normal" use.
I haven't done a deep dive into Here WeGo's privacy policy, but I imagine they're decent since it lets you download whole countries' worth of offline maps I exclusively use them because of the offline functionality. I also have yet to find an error in a map of their's, and I've used them in numerous countries. Google Maps downright sucks in some countries, meanwhile

I use Google Maps primarily for its tracking ability. All of our family are connected and have tracking displayed so that we can find each other. If one of us breaks down we can locate them. And with an elderly family member helps to keep track, just in case. As for privacy, there is no privacy if you are living on the grid in this society. It is just what we have to deal with today.
Yes, privacy is laughable if using a phone period. Some services might be more or less likely to track than others, but in the end, nothing is private, unless you're living off grid. To think differently is beyond ignorance. Apple may have a "more privacy minded" GPS, but don't think for a second that they aren't tracking. A good example is their last attempt to monitor your pictures and videos you have on your phone. If it wasn't for the uproar after getting caught, they would have happily thrown everyone's "privacy" under the bus, for a "good idea". Nah, I'll take the modernized world, with eyes wide open, than live in a world using technology years-old without the benefits.
Yes, anything Google is horrible for privacy and while you went to great lengths to explain the anonymizing of Apple's solution, I trust those devices even less. I've used OSMand for years. It fails miserably finding addresses but it's great for following pre-loaded routes. I use it for motorcycle tours. I was introduced to Magic Earth (it uses Open Street Maps) via the /e/ Foundation OS I have on one of my phones and it seems like it has some merit.
Great video, I just switch to apple 2 days ago and looking for the best map to use, I am uninstalling Google map, OsmAnd is good but you have to pay to use with Android Auto, I haven’t use it with CarPlay yet. Kudos to Naomi.
Google maps helped me with a liar. I was a courier at the time. The support person said I was late arriving to the pick up. I snap shot the time I arrived, as well as when I left. Would've gotten written up. I like Google Maps.
Privacy aside, we have found Apple Maps to be a more "human" choice in GPS use. Since the last update from Apple it is just as accurate, better spoken directions and even more detailed maps.
If people were really concerned about privacy, get out of the cities, shut off your devices and put them in an RFID protection bag or pouch, use cash only, and enjoy you self. If not, remember those grocery shopping cards, credit cards, store cameras, apps on your phones.
I've used Waze back in the day. It allows users to alert others of speed traps on roads. It uses a lot of battery power so have it charging when using. I'm not certain on the privacy part
I drove quite a bit of longhaul before the Internet and I found time & again that car traffic time and again, cause havic because the driver's way overly checking the Internet, rather than paying attention to real time traffic, thereby causing undo traffic problems themselves!
I really do not mind Google maps using my data. I see no issue with it. I would however like more control over route choices. I love tiny little backroads. Two of my vehicles cannot do national speed limit. One is 13' high and over 6'6" wide and really struggles on hills.
If your vehicles will do 45 mph, you are fine. 45 mph is legal on every road in the U.S. I NEVER exceed 65 mph, no matter what the speed limit is. I have no desire to allow the government to know where I am, or how fast I am going. I am a former private pilot, and such information has been used against pilots for a long time.
Nothing on a modern Apple phone is private when the device is unlocked. When the device is unlocked, it's unencrypted and the Neural Engine uses AI to scan all data on the device and send it back to the Apple servers. Apple said they don't actually collect data in this way any more, up to you if you want to believe them.

@@TC-xq8cr Well they've gone through some serious litigations, legal procedures, and allegations since then. I believe their entire privacy policy was restructured and redefined. I'm not saying anything is guaranteed, but this video makes it seem like Google is intentionally and maliciously stealing and selling you private data, but according to their policy, any information they're collecting is not tied to your personal information and no third party can see your private data unless you grant access to them.
Plus, this data collection can be manually disabled, which may give out your age group for example. They are actually transparent about what exactly is being shared, but like I said, you have the option to disable this stuff to give yourself peace of mind. ✌️
@@-The-Golden-God- What are you talking about? Did you not see the CEO of Google getting grilled by congress in 2020? Now they show you exactly what data is being used and for what. Of course you could assume they're lying, but that's why you're able to disable the data sharing for your own peace of mind even though it's not personally identifying by default. Thank you for this video. I chose Organic Maps due to its having a higher overall rating than OSMAND. But it also has "only" 500,ooo downloads compared to 10 million. No matter what, I've made the switch to better privacy, so now I just need to check out your other videos to see what else I can do to improve my life.
Anyone who doubts the sincerity of Apple's commitment to privacy needs to watch this video. They may not be perfect, but they are so many orders of magnitude better than their competiton its almost absurd.

Google Maps can also be incredibly poor. Like telling me to turn in 100 feet, when the turn is 1/4 mile away. Or to turn off and continue driving EAST, right into the setting sun. I think the city of Sunrise, Florida (home of a major stadium) spent 4 years trying to get their grossly mislocated position fixed on Google Maps. Yes, it is a miraculous concept...but still apparently programmed by grade school students after band class.
@@brianbreeding1 I haven't had to "fix" any phone I've ever owned. My PCs have been home builds since 1996. I don't have problems with them, I build them to suit my needs, upgrade as necessary. Is Apple maps still a safe option when you connect your phone to the car? I read that a ton of data from the phone is transferred to the car, uploaded to the car manufacturer for the usual marketing firms, can be pulled by your mechanic and if you have an app tied to it... monitor the car (including a detailed GPE history, contacts, etc) forever. Not just a privacy but an exposure to criminals nightmare. Or did Apple plug the holes in the phone and car for recent models? As an alternative, what apps would you recommend for an old phone without a SIM card updating the maps once a year over wifi? Losing live traffic and accident warnings of course.
Also a good replacement for Google maps is magic Earth navigation it has a built-in dash can that just is your phone in other neat features that I would say is on par with waze or Google maps

Openstreetmap has trails and ways in their routing, that dont exist in any other maps. I'm helping OSM width their map by adding Ways, Paths and other data. Everyone can do this.
Oh probably even take you over a mountain of dirt roads and get stuck in the snow and not accessible at all I think that’s probably what that will do because that’s happened a lot of people even the CEO of CNET him and his wife and little baby did that it was what they were shown on the GPS and at that time and season it was not really accessible because of the snow and the snow came in on him and he got stuck so he They were there for days colder than anything! So he started walking to find something to get help and they found him dead in a stream overcame by the cold…

Some people probably don't realize you can still buy road atlases and state and city maps in bookstores. And those visitor centers at state borders often have maps in them.

I am a 59 year-old non-geek and because of what I have already seen and experienced, and because of what I have learned from yourself and Rob Braxmann, I have recently loaded an S5 Galaxy with LineageOS and am taking my first tentative steps into a Google-free life.
Navigation is my big concern, especially as I am a recent immigrant into a Western European country from Southern Africa.
I have installed OSMAnd and now Organic Maps to see how well they perform. Tomorrow is the first test.
I don't need all the bells and whistles that GMaps offer, but I do need to get to where I need to go.
I do have 2 proper paper maps with me at all times as well as a small expedition Garmin GPS.
I should be ok.

@@sl4983 Yeh...navigation was a big problem. Nothing worked as well as Google Maps. OSMAnd was a fail. I bought a Garmin GPS, installed it on the windscreen and it has basically solved the navigation problem in large part.
LineageOS is excellent.
I use my Googled phone only for RUclips and only on Wi-Fi.
Its liberating to have all the apps I want without once giving my email address or otherwise identifying myself.
Also...battery life without Google is remarkable...sometimes as much as 4 days.
No regrets.

I use a several years old version of waze as it's amazingly smooth and fast and doesn't make my phone heat up and drain battery like mad. Used to use an old version of maps until it self disabled and forced me to update. The update was so bad it made my phone heat up like a runaway reactor and shut off.

You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs: if you want (free) services, you'll have to relinquish something, if only for purely technical reasons and not necessarily for "tracking" (Google Maps has over 150 million monthly users, quite useless and nearly impossible to manage for nominal tracking). Besides, even Apple tells a lot of tales, just to do the opposite afterward, like allowing app developers to collect data from its 1bn iPhone users for targeted advertising (source:: computerworld, jan 7 2022). In Italy we use to say "the cleanest of them has the scabies..."

I first learned how to use a map in high school using a topographical map which carried over into being a soldier. As an over-the-road driver 1991-2018 I used road maps in an atlas plus I have a collection of city maps. Plus I still recall how to get to places I went to pretty often.

The problem with OpenStreetMap is that it's useless in most rural areas. Missing streets, missing house numbers, missing everything. In large metropolitan areas it's better.
In general, I highly doubt any privacy statements of any company or place is trustworthy. If any government/law enforcement agency comes knocking, they all give your data away.
On top of that, cell providers also sell your location, complete with identity data. Some stores like Walmart also track each and every cellphone location within in their stores, and use various means to associate that with specific customers.
There is only one way to avoid getting tracked: Don't use cellphones of any kind, don't use computers, don't drive a car and pay for everything with cash. Even then, you're not completely in the clear due to the pervasive use of cameras in public spaces.
We need more cameras everywhere , maybe with strict regulations but illegal or dangerous 🎉activities are swamping the world . I’d rather have a chance of security than hiding what ? I have nothing to hide .
This is also my frustration with Open Street Maps as I live rural. I compensate by knowing my area but then I can’t trust it elsewhere.

However, I lost many of my inherent skills by (ab)using such an app - any of them - for directions. Therefore, I realy enjoy finding the way on my own and ask people when I possibly get lost. Sure, you are faster than me most of the time - especially in unfamiliar places. But boy it is so satisfying to find the way on your own! Try it ;)
No, it's time and energy consuming, frustrating and annoying to others because everyone know you could use maps. I prefer doing something that is real beneficial and get satisfied by that instead.
Also, i think these privacy discussions and sensitivities are becoming something like a OCD for many people.
Why would an advertiser want to pay for advertisement if the ad can't be effective and shown to right people? And if they won't pay, how Mrs. Naomi is gonna create content for "free" for you and me? After all, the privacy debate is not about personalized advertising alone; it would be wrong to consider only that one argument. Ultimately, it's the same everywhere: In the wrong hands, any technology can be harmful. The question is whether we are putting our data in the right hands. I cannot judge this in most cases, which is why I refrain from disclosing my data as much as possible.
Regarding advertising directed at me: I'm not interested in it at all. Whether it is addressed to me personally or not is irrelevant -> I click it away or block it completely. As soon as I'm done with my education, I'd like to finance people like Naomi directly rather than through third parties in order to enable Naomi's independence from companies.
I have found that Google maps sometimes can't read a map. There have been many times, when clients have used Google maps to come to my office, and Google maps have sent them to the opposite side of the city.
Those privacy awareness claimed by Apple are mostly an act of faith. Apple says that iPhone do not send data to its server or it sends it anonymaized but there is no way to check that claim.
The reason people know is because apple has given access to that information. So we do actually know they’re not saving the data in this instance of maps.
Open source or nothing
They don't save your data in maps, they don't need too. They know where you are and who you are even when your phone is powered off.
I prefer offline gps maps like TomTom and Garmin. These also work when there is no internet connection and it is never good to be dependend on mobile internet when you're lost.
2/3 of the alternatives I mentioned are offline gps options too :)
I travel so much I have to use Google maps otherwise I’ll be lost all over the place - That’s what I plan on using going to Cleveland tomorrow…. I kept my physical map. Got one of the entire United States

They specifically clarify in their strict privacy policy that personal data is never sold to anyone.

I have mapped over 300k Openstreetmap items over 5 years. Google maps is soo bad with amenity placement accuracy. I started when bitcoin was 6$ joke. Hindsight I should've been buying BTC but osm was so mentally rewarding. If I read the bitcoin white paper back then I'd probably do both, and now would host OSM tiles for Poland on a beefy server

To be honest when I was travelling the outback I grabbed an old phone without a sim and downloaded offline maps from Google and that was my dedicated gps. Never needed a connection.

We can’t know for certain, even with open source code if you’re not auditing and compiling it yourself there’s an element of trust. So we look to what researchers uncover and release and make decisions based on information available and track records.
One should also always carry a compass and abacus for optimal direction accuracy and time/distance calculations while travelling. That said, there are some privacy considerations to be taken seriously from the perspective of satellite imagery while you are using these manual devices.

I still have my old, real paper, maps. I can put real labels, zoom in with a magnifying glass, etc. if I lose power, the data is still there.

Giving out minimal info about you is still very helpful, it means less attack surface against you.
Not kissing someone sick with the flu isn't the same as not entering the same building, or even room, with them.
Well to be honest, if everyone is so worried about sitting on the toilet in front of everyone they’d just stop going to the bathroom, right? But instead they close the door. Same thing for cell phones. Just because you have one doesn’t mean you have to give away 100% of your privacy. You can take measures (like choosing certain apps over others) to protect your privacy.
Even without privacy issues, I find digital maps absolutely intolerable. They don't give me the 'overall big picture' that my brain needs to actually SEE how to get from point A to my destination, let alone the ability to view all the other optional routes! You have to zoom in so far to see street names that you can't see what roads the street connects to. It's like wearing a blindfold and trusting someone to lead you by the hand, except that that person is a single-minded idiot who doesn't know that you need to avoid a recently blocked road, or that you'd prefer to turn left at intersections with lights, instead of trying to cross and turn onto a very busy, multi-lane road. It's also irritating to have dozens of irrelevant businesses marked on the map instead of just the destination(s) that I need, and the road names!
Your recommendations are ALWAYS great Naomi, and you look terrific 100% of the time.
Google maps is OK for getting a rough idea of time/distance for a journey but rubbish at actually getting you there.
I always use a proper sat-nav for the actual drive.
I find it prevents me from throwing my phone out of the window when google takes me round in a circle or gets me totally lost.
Do I want client data ( When my services were provided to a particular address ) sold to potential competitor wishing to analyze the local market ? Such data was collected in my industry by users of an auto diagnostic tool, and the company went in and competed against the very dealers using it....... just an example of the risk of data collection.
all map services require location being enabled in order to function properly so it's not just google.

The forest service has great Free vehicle use maps for every national forest. just go in and ask. I worked for the Mt. St. Helens Monument HQ and always gave them to people coming in. Electronic maps are not dependable in the forest.

Yes, to clarify what Naomi said, osmand repository is updated to reflect changes on openstreetmap monthly. By default it's up to the user to do manual update when needed. In osmand plus there's an option to turn on live updates to immediately patch in updates from openstreetmap (I don't find that necessarry)
Also an advice: When downloading maps in the offline maps menu, it may be difficult to find relevant map by region name in some countries. Just holding finger on undownloaded region gives you option to download the map.

That's not my experience; on Android my offline maps expire after a year (I try to update them on a monthly basis nevertheless).
I used to Drive for a Living back in the Late 70's and 80's when You Had to use The "Thomas Guide" it Kept me Focused, Alert and Educated!!

Magic Earth is the way to go. I wish it were open source, but OSMAND is mostly unusable as a daily driver. If you can manage with OSMAND, more power to you, but I have wasted hours on the road, lost because of OSMAND multiple times. Magic Earth isn't perfect but its functionality is way beyond OSMAND and also can work offline if needed.

Google Maps gave me the wrong directions for the 3rd time yesterday-actually switched to Apple Maps to get the right directions.Google Maps is a done deal, even more so after seeing this.

I remember printing MapQuest directions from Las Vegas to LA. There was always a wrong turn, somewhere. Then I remember trying to use MapQuest on- line on a Google 7 (?) tablet. It would run out of power, not even halfway. We did not have oodles of cords and charger accessories back then. Finally, we made the trip with a plugged in Tablet. Made it all the way to our destination.
I have been using Google Maps. Now I am learning to use Waze. We will see....

Wouldn't the best option be a GPS device? To be honest I know these are still sold, it's been over a decade since I've seen one.
Problem is, that most people only want to carry a minimal of gear, so the phone is the most useful and easily device to have, so most GPS devices has stopped being manufactured. Myself, when I was backpacking used a Garmin GPS device with satellite subscription, but haven't used that in years. Phone is much easier to carry and the interconnectivity of the Continental US makes using its' map function work almost as well as a GPS device.
I still use an old TomTom gps when driving out of town. Still good and functional (and it is possible to updated it online to get new map info). Can be used in places without cellphone signal.
I still use my trusty and small eTrex 30x GPS, which operates forever on two-AA batteries and are easily replaced if need be. I also use Backroads Maps which are as good as can be and very private, too.
Back in the 70s/80s/90s i used to travel for work all over Great Britain using only a paper book of maps before I set off.
Could get from home in the North to any specific destination _address_ in 6 instructions or less.
That does assume common sense starts like for london go via M1, for Exeter go via M5, for Wales go via M4, for Liverpool/Manchester/Leeds/Hull go via M62, but after that 6 notes scribbled before I set off dropped me right at the office/factory I needed.
Now with PRAT-NAV🤬 I get sent down any number of narrow farm tracks little better - and narrower - than private driveways.
Interesting that Apple maps sounds a good alternative. Not as private as could be but keeps the functionality available. I was wondering how other Apple services stack up. Interested in email and calendar. I have proton mail and calendar but lose functionality and wondered how private or not Apples versions were. Love to her your thoughts.
Yeah, I was surprised also that she said Apple. They might not be the devil that Google is, but I have always thought of Apple as being pretty high on the list of companies I would least like to trust.
Apple is a garbage company. They hold your digital purchases hostage behind their security requirements. Like to recover my old apple ID, I have provide them with the debit/credit card I originally used. Something that got replaced and hasn't been used in years. There is no way for me to come up with that information. Same issue with using my phone number at the time. I don't recommend and WILL NEVER use Apple products again!
I've always been a android user, at the end of 2022, my android phone quit working. I decided to buy a iphone 14. Use it for about 3 months and couldn't wait to get rid of it and apple's soul sucking eco system. As of March 23, I've been back with android. Better experience, less hassle and less money spent on the phone every month than apple was.
I was going to delete my location data from google, but before you press the button, google gives you a historic list of all the places you have been, which actually makes you think... that if one day I would like to re-visit what I did on that trip or holiday, its a useful thing to have. I kept it.

Almost everything is dine on your device, except when you're using real-time traffic ...the traffic data is anonymous. It runs, at your choice, with offline maps, so doesn't need any internet connection, for "normal" use.
I haven't done a deep dive into Here WeGo's privacy policy, but I imagine they're decent since it lets you download whole countries' worth of offline maps
I exclusively use them because of the offline functionality. I also have yet to find an error in a map of their's, and I've used them in numerous countries. Google Maps downright sucks in some countries, meanwhile

I use Google Maps primarily for its tracking ability. All of our family are connected and have tracking displayed so that we can find each other. If one of us breaks down we can locate them. And with an elderly family member helps to keep track, just in case.
As for privacy, there is no privacy if you are living on the grid in this society. It is just what we have to deal with today.

Yes, privacy is laughable if using a phone period. Some services might be more or less likely to track than others, but in the end, nothing is private, unless you're living off grid. To think differently is beyond ignorance.
Apple may have a "more privacy minded" GPS, but don't think for a second that they aren't tracking. A good example is their last attempt to monitor your pictures and videos you have on your phone. If it wasn't for the uproar after getting caught, they would have happily thrown everyone's "privacy" under the bus, for a "good idea".
Nah, I'll take the modernized world, with eyes wide open, than live in a world using technology years-old without the benefits.

Yes, anything Google is horrible for privacy and while you went to great lengths to explain the anonymizing of Apple's solution, I trust those devices even less. I've used OSMand for years. It fails miserably finding addresses but it's great for following pre-loaded routes. I use it for motorcycle tours. I was introduced to Magic Earth (it uses Open Street Maps) via the /e/ Foundation OS I have on one of my phones and it seems like it has some merit.
Great video, I just switch to apple 2 days ago and looking for the best map to use, I am uninstalling Google map, OsmAnd is good but you have to pay to use with Android Auto, I haven’t use it with CarPlay yet. Kudos to Naomi.

Apple was the originator of tracking, I don't trust anything Apple.
Google maps helped me with a liar. I was a courier at the time. The support person said I was late arriving to the pick up. I snap shot the time I arrived, as well as when I left. Would've gotten written up. I like Google Maps.
Privacy aside, we have found Apple Maps to be a more "human" choice in GPS use. Since the last update from Apple it is just as accurate, better spoken directions and even more detailed maps.
No roaming charges when you're a broad. The women will be glad to hear that.

I've used Waze back in the day. It allows users to alert others of speed traps on roads. It uses a lot of battery power so have it charging when using. I'm not certain on the privacy part

I drove quite a bit of longhaul before the Internet and I found time & again that car traffic time and again, cause havic because the driver's way overly checking the Internet, rather than paying attention to real time traffic, thereby causing undo traffic problems themselves!

I really do not mind Google maps using my data. I see no issue with it.
I would however like more control over route choices.
I love tiny little backroads. Two of my vehicles cannot do national speed limit. One is 13' high and over 6'6" wide and really struggles on hills.
If your vehicles will do 45 mph, you are fine. 45 mph is legal on every road in the U.S. I NEVER exceed 65 mph, no matter what the speed limit is. I have no desire to allow the government to know where I am, or how fast I am going. I am a former private pilot, and such information has been used against pilots for a long time.

There is no way to circumnavigate GM if you want to navigate efficiently and fast.
I personally have a much better experience with Waze for navigation, so I'd say you don't need Google Maps if you combine Waze with Osmand.

Nothing on a modern Apple phone is private when the device is unlocked. When the device is unlocked, it's unencrypted and the Neural Engine uses AI to scan all data on the device and send it back to the Apple servers. Apple said they don't actually collect data in this way any more, up to you if you want to believe them.

@@TC-xq8cr Well they've gone through some serious litigations, legal procedures, and allegations since then. I believe their entire privacy policy was restructured and redefined. I'm not saying anything is guaranteed, but this video makes it seem like Google is intentionally and maliciously stealing and selling you private data, but according to their policy, any information they're collecting is not tied to your personal information and no third party can see your private data unless you grant access to them.
Plus, this data collection can be manually disabled, which may give out your age group for example. They are actually transparent about what exactly is being shared, but like I said, you have the option to disable this stuff to give yourself peace of mind. ✌️
@@-The-Golden-God- What are you talking about? Did you not see the CEO of Google getting grilled by congress in 2020? Now they show you exactly what data is being used and for what. Of course you could assume they're lying, but that's why you're able to disable the data sharing for your own peace of mind even though it's not personally identifying by default. Google probably has the safest accounts in the world.
Thank you for this video. I chose Organic Maps due to its having a higher overall rating than OSMAND. But it also has "only" 500,ooo downloads compared to 10 million. No matter what, I've made the switch to better privacy, so now I just need to check out your other videos to see what else I can do to improve my life.
Anyone who doubts the sincerity of Apple's commitment to privacy needs to watch this video. They may not be perfect, but they are so many orders of magnitude better than their competiton its almost absurd.

They lost a lot of trust from the community when they planned client side scanning. They’ve since dropped that but it’s ok to be skeptical of them. At the same time I think they provide great privacy alternatives for the largest number of ppl
Google Maps can also be incredibly poor. Like telling me to turn in 100 feet, when the turn is 1/4 mile away. Or to turn off and continue driving EAST, right into the setting sun. I think the city of Sunrise, Florida (home of a major stadium) spent 4 years trying to get their grossly mislocated position fixed on Google Maps.

@@brianbreeding1 I haven't had to "fix" any phone I've ever owned. My PCs have been home builds since 1996. I don't have problems with them, I build them to suit my needs, upgrade as necessary. THE biggest benefit to Android phones, unlike Apple, is you can install a totally unique OS on it without any Google shite on it at all. Graphene baby, Graphene.

Is Apple maps still a safe option when you connect your phone to the car?
I read that a ton of data from the phone is transferred to the car, uploaded to the car manufacturer for the usual marketing firms, can be pulled by your mechanic and if you have an app tied to it... monitor the car (including a detailed GPE history, contacts, etc) forever. Not just a privacy but an exposure to criminals nightmare.
Or did Apple plug the holes in the phone and car for recent models?
As an alternative, what apps would you recommend for an old phone without a SIM card updating the maps once a year over wifi? Losing live traffic and accident warnings of course.

Also a good replacement for Google maps is magic Earth navigation it has a built-in dash can that just is your phone in other neat features that I would say is on par with waze or Google maps
