  • A compliment can change your life, IF it has two qualities. Do you know what they are?
Cheryl Ferguson understands motivation and what drives students to excel. She has over 200 students in her band program and over 200 students who are on the waitlist to get into her band program. During her 20 years as a teacher, Cheryl has taught music at every level including K-6 classroom and junior high band programs.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I was in grade 7 when I played under her in an honour band. She was the one who drove me to want to become a music teacher. My favourite quote from her was, "People don't get applauded much in their lives, so when the crowd claps, you just stand up straight, smile, and soak it all in." Guess what I'm going to be saying to my future students.

So true that people don't get applauded much in their lives. That's why it behooves us all to, as author/speaker Ken Blanchard says, catch people doing something right (vs. the typical "leave alone (and then, waiting to find something on them), zap!"

So that's how she does it! Absolutely one of the best teachers I've had the pleasure of meeting. My children are lucky to have her in their lives.

I have played in various bands and orchestra for over 40 years and have been blessed with many great teachers and directors. However, I must conclude that my time at IMC with Cheryl has revealed the most driven, inspiring, competent and passionate lover of music and it's musicians of anyone I have ever met. It is always an honor working with her.

Cheryl has a passion for teaching; she is drenched in enthusiasm. I have a similar mindset about how to drive students to excellence She has definitely given me some ideas that I will incorporate in my teaching of college students. Same principles work!

Something I came up with is to be in a checkout line and instead of saying "how's it going?" simply ask "How is your shift going?" it takes them back for a second and most of the time they have to think before answering and sometimes, they are more honest with their response.

Her speech was phenomenal, the way she was able to build a culture in a band class that was always on the persuit of excellence is great. Theses tools of leadership could be used in probably any other setting, and the results would be just as good. Even though I would be coaching a far more demanding sport physically. I believe that using this knowledge to get my athletes mentally prepared and focused to accomplish our own goals, will be tremendously beneficial. Plus as a soon to be coach, I hope i will be able to lead my athletes on their own persuit of excellence.

I assume that the definition of excellence would differ from one to another ,for me ...it is to do my best in every issue in my life and never give up..... And at the end of my life...I will be totally satisfy about my steps
