Don't Buy the Steam Deck Dock - Buy This Instead!

  • Today, let's talk Docks! Specifically, Docks for the Steam Deck. Valve has recently unveiled their first-party dock, and I have to say I think it's a bad deal. There are plenty of cheaper options, and the features it offers aren't very compelling. So today, I'll show you guys what I recommend instead of the Steam Deck Dock.

I hummed over whether to get a third party vs official dock and ultimately went for the official one. Not because it offers any particularly meaningful differences but just because it's first party and I already felt like my 64GB deck was a steal. Can definitely see why people would get a third party one, they're 99% the same and ultimately the point of the steam deck is for it to be an "open" product that works with as much as possible.

nothing wrong with that man, that’s great you made the choice for the official one! the beauty of steam deck is that every owner can personalize the way they want it. who cares what others think! if that’s how you want it, go for it! I have a case protector because (protek at all times) mentality. only wish the official dock is compatible for mines to snug right in, unfortunately my protector case makes it a bit bulkier. 😅

And used the same exact Dell Dock (as you) that I found for $5 at a thrift Store. Its amazing Like you said Audio out and also charges the Deck. I did get the official Steam Deck Dock. The reason was that at the time The shipping for the Jsaux was 2 weeks the same as the valve and that was the only one that I wanted over the Offical dock. Also, the Dock is officially supported by Valve and is updated to include more support and features as time goes on. This is all handled through Steam and all the user needs to hit update. With other 3rd parties you'll need to go through the downloading and installing process which may include jumping into desktop mode. This may be to cumbersome for most users. Also, the Dock does come with the same power cable that the Steam Deck comes with so I like you said no need to unplug and replug.

I agree with your complaints. I would add not to buy any dock that is only good for the Steam Deck, find one you can use with your phone, laptop, and deck then add a small stand or case.
The only reason Switch Dock was okay was because the console had it included in the price and package.
What I would like to see is the mCable used with steam + a dock. Does it take some of the load off the deck? Now if that was built into the steam deck dock or had additional storage built in, then I would buy it.
Add: I hope Valve doesn't do what Nintendo did and release an update that bricks people's deck because they used a third party dock. That's one reason why I am worried about non-oem docks.

    • @Skipti_LLC

Valve did say a few years ago that the Steam Machines was a mistake and that they are planning to retry it again but in a different way, the Steam Deck is that different way. Taking a page from Nintendo, this time Valve handles the hardware and OS whereas third party handles only the display options whereas before third party basically does their own thing whereas Valve only handles the OS. I agree to disagree, the Steam Deck Dock has advantages, for one, it receives firmware updates by Valve that are easy to install and also, by ordering it you receive a second charger, identical to the one that came with your deck. Also, I don't need to have that many devices connected to my Deck in docked mode, I have one 2.4 Ghz dongle for my xbox controllers, all running of the same dongle and maybe an external hard-drive, that way I still have one free USB port. And the biggest reason for me, it's from Valve, not some company I never heard before, well at least before the Steam Deck came out, I just trust Valve more in regards of quickly fixing an issue and also having good RMA policies, 99€ I think is a good deal.

1.for a normal user, $400 dollars is amazing for a pc handheld gaming device that can play most games and got arguably the best handheld controls. But let's go with your set up instead since I'm critiquing you not the deck which is amazing. Lets say you do have the $400 dollar model which I doubt. Lets add the dell $200 dollar dock (its 200 bucks when on sale). Ur keyboard, $120. Thats already $720. Lets not forget the mouse, the case, the stand, and ur audio mixer. Now let's look at budget gaming laptops. You got a g15 for $750 with 256gb, rtx 3050, and an i5 12500H. Easily faster than a deck.
      2. You got to understand I believe the deck is amazing. I simply cant understand your use case. Like I said, u can use it however u want but in my eyes you are extra goofy. If I saw my mate do this I would flame them but ultimately it does not matter. Steam decks are pretty lit

I do have the $400 dollar version, watch my video about upgrading the deck if you'd like to see how much storage I have in it. And all of my stuff was either second hand craigslist deals or pawn shops, plus you can't say the dock and the peripherals add up to the price of a replacement laptop? I would dock a laptop as well, that's what I do with my editing laptop (Mac). And yes, Steam Decks are lit. I love the deck, just not the official Dock.

Lots of portable PCs are out there just like portable Androids, Linux, and emulation handhelds too but the cheapest and most powerful right now is the Steam Deck. Second to that is either the AYN Odin, GPD Win 3, or the Anbernic Win600 but there's no guaranteed if you'll get the same great service from Anbernic, AYN, or GPD like the Steam Deck. You could also get the AYA Neo 2, AYA Neo Air, Pyra Dragon Box, GPD Win 4, or the OneXPlayer but those are super expensive.

Yea like you I feel the same on the official dock. It works as intended agreed but my use case its not holding up.
But I completely understand as a consumer this was were valve intended to make a profit per unit sold I went in knowing that but still feel very underwhelmed with its actual support.
