- Grand Mesa National Forest in Colorado is home to three million acres of amazing wilderness and wildlife. On a recent visit to Grand Mesa, we had a chance encounter with four beautiful bears at Cobbett Lake near the Visitor Center. For approximately 20 minutes, we were able to safely watch a mama bear and her three cubs as she guided them around Cobbett Lake looking for fish.
Grand Mesa National Forest is home to the world’s largest flattop mountain. Grand Mesa is an 11,000-foot flattop mountain with over three hundred lakes with excellent fishing and boating. There are numerous hiking trails and campgrounds throughout Grand Mesa National Forest. Grand Mesa National Forest is home to black bears, elk, bighorn sheep, lynx and even moose.

Yes! When we first spotted them we weren't sure if they were going to come into the campground, or where exactly they were headed. It was very fun to be able to watch them for such an extended period of time from across the lake. I hope you are doing great!

Thanks! Yes they got up and moved pretty quickly, once they realized that the bear was not going to be denied the fish that they had caught for her and her cubs! Easy lunch for the bears.

I have seen many bears over the years, but never a mama with 3 cubs that I was able to watch for such an extended period of time. They were SO cute! The lake was about the size of a football field and we filmed this from the opposite side of the lake at a safe distance. I hope you are having a lovely Sunday! ~ Anita

I love seeing bears out in the wild, doing their own thing. What I don't like is when people get out of their cars and try to get as close as they can to take photos and stuff. So dangerous. You were all so respectfully distant. Good job! And you saw the babies! Awwwww!

How very special to encounter the bears. I just heard on the news about a bear who died and now her 3 cubs are orphans. I know they can cause harm but in their natural habitat they are so perfect. Lovley lovely video. ❤🐻Thanks for sharing. 🇳🇱🙋🏼♀️🥝

Hi there! Thanks. It was so much fun being able to watch the bears safely from the other side of the lake for an extended period of time. They were so cute and smart. We talked to the couple the got chased away by the bears and they told us they ate all four of the fish they had on the stringer. They did start fishing again after the bears left the area. It was so fun and interesting to be able to see these bears from the other side of the lake. The three cubs were so very cute! They were probably about 6 months old. Mama bear did a very nice job taking care of them. I hope you are doing great!

I just wish we would have had our tripod or one of the other camera with us! We certainly weren't expecting to come across a mama bear and three cubs. But they were so cute! It we would have been 2 minutes slower on the trail, we would have been face to face with them!

I have seen bears over my years of camping, but it is usually just a single bear and I catch just a glimpse of it. I have never seen a mama bear and 3 cubs, and have been able to watch them for such an extended period of time. We watched them for almost 20 minutes! It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Happy Sunday!
