    Hey kids! Its Uncle Ben here, back again with another hair metal gem. After i put up that lesson on the real way to play Lay It Down by Ratt, you all flooded me with requests for a lesson on how Reb Beach REALLY plays Seventeen by Winger, so here you go! This one took a minute to figure out, i tell ya. There's no good tabs for it out there, and pretty much all the lessons i've seen have certain notes in the wrong position and stuff. I found the isolated guitar track and pored over it, plus watched a TON of live Winger footage to double check the positions and stuff, and here we are. Hope ya'll enjoy it, its a dope riff!
    Be sure to set yourself an 1/8th note delay around 95 BPM, that is CRITICAL for making this riff sound right. And tune down a half step, of course.
    Playing my Suhr Modern White Tiger into my Kemper Profiler into a (you guessed it) Marshall JCM800 Amp Factory profile. As usual.
    What other classic riffs do you want to learn next?! let me know in the comments below!

  • @woodchuk1
    @woodchuk1 6 лет назад +132

    Winger may have gotten a lot of flak, in no small part thanks to Beavis and Butthead, but they were much more talented musically than their look might have suggested. Reb has always had INSANE tapping chops, as the solo to this tune clearly demonstrates. He clearly has a knack for writing deceptively difficult riffs, as evidenced by the huge number of inaccurate tabs for this one out there. The off-time rhythm in this one hints at some serious jazz leanings in the rhythm section. Indeed, if any “hair metal” band had a candidate for “most progressive sounding,” Winger would probably be it. Thanks for the riff, Uncle Ben...now do the solo!

    Saw Winger live during their tour for their 2nd album and again just a couple years ago. They are still every bit as good if not better, than back in the day. Reb was/is light years ahead of the guitar players of the other bands that Winger was unfairly lumped in with. And neither Kip nor the band in general, NEVER received any of the musical respect they truly deserved, IMO.

    Dude you totally saved me! I was just trying to play this using only the tab and my ears, and it was not going well. Clunky and slow. Then I opened your video and bam! First magic tip was the up stroke on the chord strumming throughout the entire riff. That totally made it fall into place rhythmically. Then the finger positioning for the bar chords on the 7th and 5th frets with that little note on the G string of the 11th fret with the pinky. And of course the end of the riff on the 3rd position. I would NEVER have figured all this out. Thanks for saving me (and others) from learning this song all wrong like I often do with these tough ones. You have really provided a service to the guitar world for people wanting to learn these cool riffs.

But songs that had wonderful rhythm guitarists that were also awesome lead guitarists (George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, and obviously Reb Breach and even more) are so fun to explore even some ~35 years later. Good stuff bro. This is one of my favorite songs of the 80's. I tried my hand at being a rock star in the 80's and haven't picked up a guitar since 93 when the world turned to grunge and all the women started wearing baggy jeans and lumberjack shirts. I decided to pick it up again, and this is the song I wanted to tackle first so thank you:)

    Sounds just like the record, damn. You are the man, Ben! "Slip Of The Tongue" or anything else with Steve Vai in Whitesnake would be pretty cool for you to put through the Uncle Ben Microscope. Awesome content, love your stuff :D Edit: You do love your JCM800 preset! HAHAHAHAHA Can't blame you, though. JCMs are awesome, badass, beautiful, tried-and-true tone machines, can't go wrong with them.

      Jcm 800 2205 is a great rock amp. Not to much gain. And i never used to like them. But i was doing one song for a benefit show. Song was stairway to heaven. I did the live version thru a jcm800 2205 in the studio.. And man it was so perfect. I rented the head for the show to do the one song. Now im looking for an original jcm800 2205

    This song came up last night, and so I went lookin. Imagine my joy when I saw my always-detail-obsessed uncle on the case. Woot.
