I got a full X-Pan II Kit from my Grandfather and I love it! He bought it in 2003 when it was introduced and then gifted it to me 1,5 Years ago. Its a complete set with all 3 lenses and all Boxes and Papers.
If I wasn't a portrait shooter I'd say it's in my top 3 :P As of now my "cannot justify buying it but God I need one" is the Leaf Aptus 10 digital back :P
I was fortunate enough to borrow an XPan for a time and I completely agree about your opinion on the 90mm. It just felt the most natural to my eye in panoramic mode. In standard 36x24 mode it did feel a bit restrictive but shooting portraits with the 90mm in panoramic mode was wholly satisfying. Great review as always!
I'm happy I've bought this camera years ago when the prices were much different. I've checked immediately if the switch was working (which did) and then it stayed in panorama mode ever since :-) I use it mostly with the 45mm lens but I have also the 90mm and it really "saved" the day when I needed to exlude something from the composition, and at a wide aperture is still really sharp. Very nice video, I like the B-roll and the use of the lights, really well done.
Have had mine for about 2 years now. Don't use it nearly enough as I would want too but still one of the only cameras I would pay current marketprice for in a heartbeat. I currently have pretty much every camera anybody could want and the XPan is still one of the only ones that always makes shooting interesting. Had a Noblex PRO 6/150 for a while a few weeks back but didn't like the distortion it created. I should definitely take out the 90mm a lot more though.
Adapters for using 35mm film in medium format cameras are cheap and readily available. What advantage is there in this camera when 45mm, 60mm and 90mm widths are all easy options? Plus with the medium format adapter you get the image in the sprocket holes, too.
Really nice set of XPan videos, thanks. Shot one roll through a demo body 20 years ago. Decided against buying it at the time, but I never fully escaped the desire to own one.
Whats up Matt, great to see a full review of this, great different color accent lighting on the set, also you left side of your mustache being cut off gives you finally some street cred :)
Great review as always Matt! That picture of Molly is beautiful, and it was interesting for sure to see how you used a different focal length than you usually do to deal with all the distractions that can come into play when shooting such a wide format. Great work, stay safe!
I know it will never happen but Fuji needs to remake the XPAN in digital format. 90 looks sweet but 30 has its moments and would be perfect for landscapes.
Thanks for the review and I agree with many of your points. What I see from many xpan shooters is that they actually don’t really use the frame they get with such camera and many pictures had 20 to 30% of the frame that was not really used, which makes you question why using such camera. Each time I see an xpan picture now, I ask myself can I crop something away.
If you're looking for an alternative to shoot this format, you can get a Bronica ETRSi, panoramic back, and a couple of lenses for less than $1000. You definitely won't have the same experience, and it may be difficult to find the back and focus screen, but it's definitely cheaper.
I have this set-up! Honestly it's pretty flawless, and it's an SLR setup so great for nailing the (Panoramic) composition as opposed to a rangefinder. And because the system is modular, parts are replaceable. Granted I need to use it a lot more to justify keeping it, but it's much better value and more versatile (camera overall)
If you have a medium format camera you can make your own I made a video explaining how if you want to check it out ruclips.net/video/xNyM8am0aiQ/видео.html
Xpan is nice and so is Fuji TX-1 (which can be found cheaper)! But for today's price I would go for Mamiya 6 or Fuji GW and mask the negative to pano ratio. Or shoot 35mm in those :)
I used to own a full XPII kit. It was a great camera, but at the end of the day it's electronic and electronics eventually fail. As the price of the kit skyrocketed I simply couldn't justify holding on to it knowing that it would give up on me eventually and either become a very expensive repair or door stop.
You can make your own if you have a medium format camera I made a little video on how to do it if you want to see how ruclips.net/video/xNyM8am0aiQ/видео.html
Definitely agree on the 90mm comment; I have the Fuji G617, a medium format panoramic camera. It has a 105mm lens that's equivalent to like 21mm on the longside. I wish I had the GX617 with the longer focal length instead. Makes me wonder with the price of the X Pan, is it more worth it to get a secondhand GFX 50R and shoot it in the cropped panoramic mode?
its not just about the resolution, you SEE and shoot differently when you go panoramic only. you can shoot panoramic on other medium format cameras too but its mostly static shots. but for street, quick shots etc its better to see panoramic and compose accordingly. i am pretty certain resoution-wise thx gfx will do fine compared to something like maybe ektachrome or ektar in the xpan
Haha. In the beginning i was very confused because I thought you’d say sponsored by squaredace. Guess I have been watching too many RUclips videos lately :D
Hey Matt, the increased width in panorama mode means you're exposing a larger piece of film. But, only in one dimension. Does this still make it a medium format film size? I mean is 90mm still 90mm or can you now say it is xx mm in 35mm equivalent focal length? Do photos taken on the larger piece of film gain that medium format look?
I wouldn't spend the money on it even though I think it is super cool. Much more worthy of the cash (if you have it) than a lot of the crappy cameras I see people way over paying for.
It’s a great video Matt with great photo! BUT, given the fact that this camera is pretty much unavailable - around 20 ebay offers in the world, so less than 0.02% of your subscribers could get it, let alone afford it - it would be more interesting to hear from you what other alternatives are available. OR, how to achieve this perspective and look with digital. That’s a challenge, isn’t it? :-) Cheers mate!
two words: medium format. The one thing you'll need to get this aspect ratio in digital format would be the Fujifilm GFX 50s. It has a built-in crop setting for 65:24 which is the exact same ratio as the xpan. Granted, you'd be cropping the image to get the look, however, you're not losing much quality given that you're using a medium format sensor. There's the Hasselblad X1D as well, and there are adapters you can use for the xpan line of lenses. This camera also has a crop setting for the xpan's ratio. The setting is even called xpan. Now, both cameras are pretty expensive, almost as much as the xpan's on ebay. But, at least you'll have a camera that will last you for the next 10 years (at least), unlike the xpan which is already an decaying system (with almost no parts available for repair). I'd rather spend $8000+ on a system that will be around for another decade or more than spend the same amount on a camera that'll make a very nice looking brick in a couple of years. Sadly, there aren't many film alternatives (or at all). There are some medium format cameras that also have an adapter mask for 35mm (like the Bronica ETRSi), but those are also hard to find. Hope this helped :-)
Nice review Matt, thanks for making content for us. I just picked up a pano kit for my Mamiya 7 (haven't had a chance to use it yet though)...it's definitely a cheaper route than the x-pan since I already have the camera. Any plans on picking up a Mamiya 6 pano kit for yourself?
Yes, I know it's not film it's digital, but for the same price you can get a Fuji GFX50 or the Hassy X1D for the same price and they both can shoot the 65:24 aspect ratio.
the best of cameras, the worst of cameras. I wrote a very long review of it here. www.35mmc.com/07/04/2018/hasselblad-xpan-fulfilling-vision/. Great video. I was interested to hear your thoughts on the lenses. I have always lusted after the 30mm, but could never find the money to buy it. I owned the 90 briefly, but it had a flaw and I had to return it. I might try and pick up the 90mm again, one of these days...
Hey Matt, could I get the same cinematic feel and ratio by running 35 mm through my Fuji GW690II? Love these shots and if I won the lottery then I'd buy an x-pan but that's not likely.
This and the G2 are the cameras that I never pulled the trigger. Personally I ended up buying a Mamiya 7 with Pano adapter for the panoramic job. Matt, how do you like the hasselblad´s lens performance? I love the mamiya 7 with 150mm and pano adapter for tight frames. I just got sent in a 6x17 shenhao back for my 4x5 camera, shot a roll with it this morning and can´t wait to develop the pictures
I would really love a 6x17 back that had its own shutter though :P The back itself is amazing, but I'd love to be able to use it with my fav lenses for portraits :(
@@KNURKonesur I tried to use my 210mm and 300mm with the 6x17 back. The image you get is 6x15, wide but not 6x17 wide, but again wide enough. Not bad at all making panoramic portrait with a 300mm lens
How different is this to large format 6x17 film backs or medium format 6x17 Matt? Just had a look on eBay, these are super expensive on our current exchange rate and could rather invest in an 8x10 and have change.
Consider the price of film. In the UK it's very difficult to get 8x10 film and then it's very expensive per sheet and very expensive to develop. 6x17cm film is not that bad cause you can still buy 120 format film kinda cheap, and definitely even cheaper with 135 format film.
Cool camera but it's just waiting to die with no prospect of recovery. If it was repairable and didn't cost $4000 I'd love to have one. A few months back one of these sold on a Goodwill auction for around $4,000 and it was untested.
You can get the xpan look on digital (Sony aps-c & Fuji) with new anamorphic lenses that were released that don't cost a fortune. Sorry I can't find the link I'm in the hospital about to have heart surgery & the WiFi is slow.
XPAN-sive as f!!!
