    2 years ago I struggled to decide what bike between a 500exc and the 690 Enduro R to build for my 8 week ride through Africa, Europe and the UK. The 690 won out. I built it into a Dakar Rally and had it shipped from the US to London. 12,000 miles and 8 weeks later, my overall opinion was it was too heavy and too tall making it too difficult to pick up. Some days it was multiple times! It was in Africa that I struggled with it! It wore me out every day! Rally’s and Hare Scrambles were out of its and my league though I tried. I ride alone pretty much, meaning I have to pick my bike up myself. I don’t want to depend on others for help!
    Once I got home, I quickly switched to the 500 and haven’t looked back! 8,900 miles on it (5500 off road) it’s the best bike I’ve ever had! Rally’s, motocross, hare scrambles, steep mountain single tracks and 700 mile days.
    All that said, the 790 is not a consideration at all for me. But that’s me! At 60 years old, light and agile is my main concern.

      Good video Mattias - interesting to hear your thoughts - I've had the 690 previously and currently riding the 790R - just something about the engine :) - as you say it's a beast :) - I'm about to change my tyres to front rally scorpion pro and rear goldentyre gt723 - both are TL but will probably run a tube in the front and keep the rear tubeless for now, with better tyres I'm hoping it's going to be even better in the dirt, the stock karoos are ok in the dry and a bit of mud but struggle in the wet - UK so lots of wet!! - the only other thing I'm doing is changing the rear sprocket from the stock 45 to a 47 rear to give it better slow speed riding on the technical off road. Keep the video's coming.

    Great review!
    one great theory for adventure bike tires: go with a high milage rear tire & a high traction front tire.
    that way you're not constantly buying rear tires & you have traction up front where it's most important.
    I'm looking at the 790r as well & I think the perfect tire combo would be:
    Front Tire: Shinko 804 or Conti TKC 80
    Rear Tire: Motoz Tractionator GPS aligned for mostly off-road
    Let me know what you think. 😄

    • @Braapncamp
      @Braapncamp  5 лет назад +2

      Jamby7 Thanks for Your input! Yes, that's the plan. I know for sure that it is possible to ruin a tire like Karoo 3 in only 500Km's with a heavier and powerful bike. Done that 😝. The 690 does not eat tires like heavy bikes do. However i have never had a bike with traction control, could possibly save some rubber? But in Rally mode the bike was in ”tire eating mode”... 😂

      Just back from a 14,000km ride across South America on a 2017 Honda Africa Twin with MEFO Super Explorer tire on rear and a Continental TDK 80 on the front. For mileage I HIGHLY recommend this tire combination. Very good traction on most surfaces from the rear and obviously outstanding mileage. Probably could have squeezed out 2000 - 2500 more km's.
      Front tire selection is key for best traction off road in terms of line, direction and steering with out slip or at least greatly reduced slip. Of course on some surfaces the rear tread pattern on the Super Explorer could be more aggressive,... however the mileage durability would suffer hugely in my experience of running knobby tires on all surfaces. Wet grass can be slippery on deep aggressive knobbies as well, but obviously are the best choice if that were all you were attacking..Like we all know and many of your contributing commenters are stating, nothing is perfect everywhere,... always....period!!!.....that's the ADVENTURE part of the sport. Skill and riding style adaptation are key to beating the conditions...or at least being able to come out with a draw on the battle.
      As you cross vast distances you will come across a vast array of differing and challenging conditions. And regardless of tread pattern...technique, ability to adapt your riding style and bike handling skills ...and may I say BRAVADO at the right moment,!,... are most important.
      Re: Traction control.
      I enjoyed the traction control option on paved surfaces and hard packed off road surfaces most usually. as well as some very wet muddy surfaces especially if/when descending tighter curves. Particularly in the Patagonia on steep mountain passes off road, in the heavy rain and in the Alti plano in the muddy rainy back road situations.
      However,...Off-Road I greatly prefer to reduce and in fact completely turn off the traction control normally,.... if dry , ....for a couple of reasons. The most important and primary reason being that in many situations and instances it is very important to be able to have the rear wheel skid or rotate freely with no other input other than the riders throttle control. Deep surfaces such as very soft deep gravel on sections of Argentina's route 40 were treacherous for many riders I spoke with who also made the journey on various machines and those who rode bikes with the option all agreed, its best to let the rear end fish tail/slide more than not.
      Secondly if you are in a situation where you prefer to be rolling along off road on loose surface conditions such as large shale or steeper lose surfaces, you need to be able to adjust without restriction the amount of power/wheel spin/torque, that the rear wheel receives , through your throttle input. Sometimes with Torque control engaged the bike will not accept more throttle response to the rear wheel ...as it is designed to gain traction and not permit wheel spin....seems obvious but if you forget to turn off the traction control it confounds your difficulties and thus makes riding more difficult in these type of surface conditions and situations.
      On wet tarmac/paved surfaces in steep hills such as in Ecuador and Colombia where the roads can be very steep and turns very tight for hundreds of kilometers the traction control is superb and a true gift from technology, especially on tread designs made more for a mixed surface condition or off road surfaces....less adaptation for sliding/skidding required with the traction control on wet paved or hard packed surfaces...lots of fun! higher speeds etc.
      I have ridden and continue to ride a variety of bikes for many years, both road and off roads / trail bikes, dual purpose , smaller dirt bikes, sport and road touring machines.
      I chose the Africa Twin recently, for its HONDA reliability, long day comfort, ability to carry loaded panniers across rough conditions and power/speed on paved conditions , ability in fast moving traffic situations etc. I have just sold the bike, with a little trepidation,..... but with a view towards the the new KTM 790R, mainly for its considerably lighter (100lb) reduced weight , and now its long interval service schedule, similar power and technology, etc.
      I have enjoyed more recently Suzuki Dakars650's form the '90's, great torque and powerful bike in off road situations, Kawasaki KLR's... amazingly tough motors and not too heavy, long range fuel capacity, Honda XR650, for great off road toughness and agility, which I road the Continental divide route from half way up the British Columbia Rockies to Mexico on, KTM 450xc-f's for unbelievable light power and maneuverability used more in Chile.
      All great bikes but all with some kind of compromise to have to accept...usually comfort for long hours in the saddle/ or lack of paved road comfort/vibrations, difficulty in tire selection options, or fuel capacity, etc. etc. etc.
      The new 790R looks like a great option, with little or perhaps no compromises for long adventure style rides as well as closer to home single track, high mountain logging road access terrain....yippee!
      The new bikes are fabulous and keep getting better, now we just need to go out and test ourselves and stay fit enough to push them for the ya ya factor.
      Enjoy stay safe and ride long & far!

    You mentioned tires... KTM fitted all of the 790 Adventure Rs at their press event in Morocco with Continental Twinduro TKC 80s. I'm sure KTM tried a lot of different tires on the 790 Adventure R before selecting TKC 80s, all to give journalists the best possible overall impression of the bike's off-road capability! Craig Horner Thanks for Your comment! Yeah, i saw that there was some knobbies on the bikes at the event. Didn't know that those where the TKC 80's though. The tires definately looked like typical ”big bike knobbies” and not like more agressive. I think that Karoo 3 or TKC 80's works fine on the rear, but for the front it would be nice with a more agressive pattern, at least when going for wet soft surfaces. Mixed riding that most of us probably do, the Karoo 3 and TKC 80's will be great. I had Karoo 2 on my 1200 GSAdv, Karoo 2 was alot better than Karoo 3. Thank you for a great video my Viking friend.
    I love the mapping switch on your 690!
    I have ordered the 790 Adv R myself, my friend received his last week, we love them
    My 790 Adv R arrives in two weeks time!
    My current ride is the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, which is a beast, but too top heavy and powerful for any serious off road use (as I do not believe in using "off road" mapping that takes it down to 100BHP) - I will keep my 1290 Super Adventure because I need a 160BHP/250KM/H bike in my life.
    Reading Facebook Group Posts, many recommend the Bridgestone AX41 as a good alternative to the Karoo 3 tyres, if you look at the Morocco test videos, there are many of them, all the 790 R models had TKC40s fitted, so even KTM acknowledge that the Karoo 3 tyres are not up to the capability of the 790 Adv R
    I will kill the Karoo 3 tyres off quite quickly, then probably try the Bridgestone AX41s and see how they work out, as my 790 Adv R will not be used for commuting, it's my "play bike" so I don't need a tyre with autobahn speed ratings.
    Again, thanks for this video, a good, insightful and informative video for those who are "upsizing" from a 690 to a 790 Adv!

      raymondavalon Thank for Your very informative comment! Will look into Your tire tips. Now i can reveal that i allready had ordered a Adv R 😁, the Karoo 3 will sit on till they are weared i think. I could imagine that the rear could be good enough with a more aggressive front. With the 690 i often end up in muddy tracks so i have opted for the most aggressive front and rear possible on that. Will probably miss that traction and look for options att 790. Again, thak you very much, we have to keep in contact with tips and tricks! 💪🏻👍🏻

      @@Braapncamp Thank you very much.
      I run a little Group in Facebook, called "KTM 790 Adventure Owners & Fans Group", it's one of the smaller Groups, but is growing.
      Tyres have not been discussed much in my Group, as I find many newer KTM 790 Adventure owners are going to be using these for both tarmac and dirt use and seem happy with KTM's tyre choice....
      My friend Dan found out the hard way about the Karoo 3 tyres when he took a fall on damp tarmac with them, the fuel tank protection and exhaust guard did their jobs, the damage was cosmetic.
      I live between France and Germany and my French home is in Barr, Alsace, right on the edge of the Vosges Mountains, so the 790 Adv R is the perfect machine for the many dirt trails through the Vosges that my 1290 Super Adventure just can not tackle due to the weight and size.
      This is the longest two weeks of my life as I await my German KTM dealer to receive my 790 from Austria
      Lastly, I'd say to you: If you can, keep the 690 too, it's an awesome bike :¬) and it's nice to have choices when you open the garage!

      frank gulla I got a delivery week mid June and a production week in May. I feel too that what i loos in pure offroad capability like in swamps, mud, rough terrain etc, the 790R compensates very well with being very capable offroad but more allround. Fur sure i will give up soloriding in the most tough terrain. To rescue the 790 out of mud holes alone like I have done with the 690 will be tough. Did it some times with a DR800 though and that bike weighted about the same as 790 (but 50% of the power...). We will se how it ends up with riding style... Hej Mattias. Bra video! Tack!
    I was just wondering if I could ask for your opinion on something.
    At present I ride an old 1100GS and was originally intending to upgrade to a newer, if not new GS. But then I started wondering if I would actually enjoy a 790 Enduro more. I don't have a great deal of experience off road, but regularly ride on dirt and gravel around Norway and Sweden. I also enjoy long trips through Europe. The agility and lower weight of the 790 appeal to me.
    You mention in your feed owning a GS before. Do you have any thoughts on the matter? Ie, changing from a GS to a 790?
    Again, thanks!

    • @Braapncamp
      @Braapncamp  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! This is a tough question, the mighty GS (I had an ADV) is an awsome machine. I have used it on rallys and forest roads for days. Standing in hours and used the great torque to steer the bike in any gear. It has low COG and is comfortable. I have as well done touring trips in Europe 2 up. Then on the 690, every minute on the smallest trails and as well broad rally gravel roads, the 690 is a king. Day in and day out as well. As well to Norway on mixed roads. When I tested the 790 I fell in love immediately, this bike will fall perfect in between without losing the capabilities offroad. I was surprised how agile it was offroad and as well how good it was on road. I will not look back for my type of mixed riding. It's a hard decision pending on what you prefer. I think You should test ride them back to back, which I possible at Bike in Trollhättan. That might result in buying the KTM ☝️😁.

      @@Braapncamp I guess test riding b2b is a must, though Trollhättan is a bit far (I live in Oslo) ;) I rode a friend's ADV last year and loved it. But I think for all but the longest journeys I would probably feel more freedom on a lighter bike. And I imagine the 790 is a lot easier to handle offroad. Besides, I ride in town almost daily, and the 790 is gonna be more fun there. Shame I can't have both :D

  • @Kaegis
    @Kaegis 5 лет назад +1

    Depends on your riding application. If you were doing faster and more technical, tighter offord riding, then the 690 is a better choice. However if you were touring more with less technical enduro, especially longer hauls and daily commuting then the 790 would be the better choice. I wanted a Huserberg FE570, IMO it is the holy grail of enduro bikes, esp for power and weight for its capacity. But they no longer make them with the forward facing engine. Also I no longer do hard enduro riding, So the 690 has sparked my interest for its versatility and ability to do a bit of everything and still be able to smash fast through forest trails and endurocross. Having seen this video, the 790 is certainly attractive and tempting. The only area that I would question is the actual "endurocross" side of it. Tight fast trails, jumps, whipping the bike around etc. I think the 790 has your name written all over it. 😉

    When you had your 690, you never tought about putting a rally kit on it? With bigger fuel capacity and better wind protection? I saw the 2020 model has even a counterbalancing system on de cingle cilinder to avoid vibrations... i also heard about changîg the gear ratio to a 17/42 for less vibration at high rpm... i think it could come very close to 2 cilinder bike on pavement and stay a lot better on dirt... what do you think?

    Seems to me that adventure bikes have one common quality(and I am sure this is a cliche comment that many have left), they suck on the road, and they also suck at off road due to the weight. But if you want a mediocre mule for fire roads, I guess. In the world of bikes, I like the right tool for the job and even then, nothing is perfect. My 2014 victory cross roads is a heavy beast and yet I could confidently ride it without soreness from Indianapolis to Denver Colorado(which I did), but context of use is everything. Hi Mattias, Must admit...I don’t ride KTMs...so my opinion may not matter to you. I get the impression that you ride more off road, no road. I know you are a big strong guy. But if I were you, I would stay with the 690, for these three reasons. WEIGHT, WEIGHT, WEIGHT...or lack thereof. And truthfully for Off road/single track, you really don’t need massive power. All that does is promote wheelspin...basically wasted energy. Beter to get your power into the earth. That is what makes you go. Seems like the only need for on road, for you, is to get to off road tracks. So on road power is really not needed. But you get stuck in mud, or dump it over, or high side it, and you will appreciate lighter weight. The 790 carries more fuel and carries it down low. But very susceptible to tank breakages. Better to carry your own fuel bladders, if and when needed. I have always had great luck with Mitas knobbies. I ran Trelaborgs for years. Before they were Mitas. My riding friends hated them. Because those tires would pick up 4” (100mm) rocks off the gravel roads and throw them at my buddies following behind. Can speak highly enough of them. A bit more expensive but wear seemed to be equivalent to most others. One caution...make sure you have good rim locks. Their traction is so good they can spin on the rim. We put short screws through the rim to dig into the tire beads. Just my thoughts.

      @Braapncamp  5 лет назад

      Wow, Thanks for Your very detailed comment. I recognize all of Your knowledgeable thoughts. Even throwing rocks at friends 😂👀. I did the swap anyway, most because I wanted some change and ofc because that the 790 appealed to me and was really fun. I know I have to adopt to my capabilities with this bike and both train with it and sometimes maybe choose another option of trails. Happy trail Bob!

      Am sure you will love the 790. And certainly you are big enough and strong enough to handle it in every situation. Enjoy it to the fullest and don’t look back. You know? Sometimes there is no better justification for making a purchase than...”I just want it.” Be safe. Ride hard.
